The World Population Prospects 2024 report, released on Thursday, said that the world's population is expected to continue growing over the coming 50-60 years, reaching a peak of around 10.3 billion people in the mid-2080s, significantly up from 8.2 billion in 2024. After peaking, the global population is projected to start declining gradually, falling to 10.2 billion people by the end of the century. India, which surpassed <keyword id="19894886" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="China" source="keywords">China</keyword> as the world's most populous nation last year, will continue to hold that position through 2100. "The population of India, which is expected to remain the world's largest throughout the century, will likely decline by 12% after reaching its peak in the early 2060s at about 1.7 billion," the <keyword id="19898339" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="UN" source="keywords">UN</keyword> report published by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), <keyword id="271075" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="population-division" source="Orion">Population Division</keyword> said. According to the report, India's population in 2024 is projected at 1.45 billion and this will peak to 1.69 billion in 2054. After this, India's population is projected to decline to 1.5 billion by the end of the century in 2100, but the country will still remain the most populous nation on Earth. Responding to a question by PTI on population projections for India, Senior Population Affairs Officer, Population Division, <keyword id="6355835" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="un" source="Orion">UN</keyword> DESA Clare Menozzi said at a press conference that "India is currently the largest country in the world in terms of population, and it is projected to stay so throughout the century. The population is currently estimated at 1.45 billion, and it's supposed to increase further to 1.69 billion. "It's supposed to peak around the 2060s in size and then it starts to slightly decline. So by the end of the century, India is projected to be around 1.5 billion, but will still the largest country in the world by a large margin." The report said that China's population, currently 1.41 billion in 2024, will fall to 1.21 billion in 2054 and further decline to 633 million by 2100. "It is anticipated that China, the country currently with the world's second-largest population, will likely experience the largest absolute population loss between 2024 and 2054 (204 million)," followed by <keyword id="6355311" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Japan" source="Orion">Japan</keyword> (21 million) and <keyword id="6358826" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russia" source="Orion">Russia</keyword> (10 million). "Longer-range population projections are more uncertain" for China, it said. "However, due to its large size and sustained low level of fertility, China is also likely to record the largest population decline of any country through the end of the century (786 million people). By 2100, China is projected to have lost more than a half of its current population and to have returned to a population size comparable to that recorded in the late 1950s (50% probability)." Responding to a question on the significantly low population projection for China, Director of the Population Division at UN DESA John Wilmoth said that "it really relates to the level of fertility that's observed currently in China. The current number is right around one birth per woman on average over a lifetime." "Given that you need 2.1 births to maintain the current population without migration, if fertility levels remain at such a low level, even if they come up slightly, any fertility level if it's below two, or especially below 1.8 or below 1.5, you're really getting into low levels of fertility and it produces a long run decline that's quite significant. And that's true for China. It's true for some other countries in this analysis," Wilmoth said. Currently, nearly one-fifth of all countries and areas, including China, Italy, the Republic of Korea and Spain, are experiencing what is sometimes referred to as "ultra-low" fertility, with fewer than 1.4 live births per woman over a lifetime. The report added that the global fertility rate currently stands at 2.25 live births per woman, down from 3.31 births in 1990. "More than half of all countries and areas globally have fertility below the replacement level of 2.1 live births per woman. This is the level required for a population to maintain a constant size in the long run (without migration), with each generation being followed by another of roughly equal size," it said. Pakistan is projected to overtake the US as the third-largest country in the world, with a population of 389 million in 2054. Currently, the US is the third largest country in the world with a population of 345 million and in 2054, it will be the fourth largest with 384 million people. Pakistan will remain the third largest country in the world, with a population of 511 million people in 2100. The report said that the estimated likelihood that the world's population will peak within the current century is very high, with a probability of 80%, a major change in UN projections from a decade ago, when this probability was around 30%. The size of the world's population in 2100 is now expected to be 6%smaller - or about 700 million people fewer - than anticipated a decade ago. In about 126 countries and areas, the population is likely to continue growing through 2054, potentially reaching a peak later in the century or beyond 2100. This group includes several of the world's most populous countries: India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan and the United States of America. In 2023, the global number of deaths among children under age 5 fell below 5 million for the first time in recent history. However, 95% of such deaths took place in the 126 countries with populations that are still growing, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Nigeria and Pakistan. The report added that globally, life expectancy at birth reached 73.3 years in 2024, an increase of 8.4 years since 1995. Further reductions in mortality are projected to result in an average longevity of around 77.4 years globally in 2054. Since 2022, life expectancy has returned to levels observed before the emergence of the coronavirus disease in nearly all countries and areas. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic during 2020 and 2021, global life expectancy at birth fell to 70.9 years, down from 72.6 in 2019. The report said that by 2080, persons aged 65 or older will outnumber children under 18. "By the late 2070s, the number of persons at ages 65 years and higher globally is projected to reach 2.2 billion, surpassing the number of children (under age 18). By the mid-2030s, it is projected that there will be 265 million persons aged 80 years or older, more than the number of infants (1 year of age or less)," it said.

The number of people aged 60 and above is expected to double between 2007 and 2050, but the real numbers will triple, reaching 2 billion by 2050. In many countries, the “oldest old”, i.e. the over-80-year-olds, would quadruple to <keyword id="30450" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Touch">touch</keyword> 400 million in the world by that year. 
 
Today, even within nations, the ageing population is seen to be different. In industrial countries, the 60-plus population went up from 12% in 1950 to 22% and will reach 32%, or 418 million, by 2050. 
 
In less developed nations, on the other hand, the 60-plus sections have moved from 6% in 1950 to 9% today and will reach 20%, or 1.6 billion by 2050. 
 
Indian scene: India can pat itself on it back that by 2020, it will become the world’s youngest country, with 64% of its population in the working age group. Not because Indians have any specific talent of getting younger than others, but merely because of their habit of procreation!

By mid-century, the older set will be 323 million people. 
 
Reasons for changing composition: So why is the world suddenly becoming older? 
 In the past, fertility was high, but so were death rates. However, now that the baby boomers have moved into the retirement period; the birth and death rates have declined dramatically, the labour force is shrinking, and the costs of <keyword id="6354432" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="pension">pension</keyword> and healthcare systems have risen, especially in Europe, <keyword id="6378080" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="North-America">North America</keyword> and <keyword id="6355311" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Japan">Japan</keyword>. 
 
Disadvantages: According to a <keyword id="141360" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pew-Research-Center">Pew Research Center</keyword> survey, the worry about the ageing population engulfs only some countries. In East Asia, nearly nine-in-ten Japanese, eight-in-ten South Koreans and seven-in-ten Chinese look at it as a burden. Europeans have more than half the public in <keyword id="87" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Germany">Germany</keyword> and <keyword id="6363645" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Spain">Spain</keyword> wringing their hands, but Americans are among the least concerned, with just one-in-four wrinkling their foreheads. 
 
Hence, such a large number of elders, with chronic disease and health issues, put a strain on resources in countries, in which basic public health concerns, such as infectious diseases and maternal and child health, have not even been addressed. 
 
The typical issues of old age include permitting “frail”, especially among the “oldest of the old” to remain in cities. Most of them may be single, female and from diverse communities. It would be a challenge to offer situations and surroundings to give them what they need. Is it possible to provide them information and give them a voice? Caring for elderly people will tax and overburden government budgets. 
 
The biggest public expenditures would be on pensions and health care as a share of the gross domestic product (GDP). Rising pension expenditure would also be driven by aging. Public pension expenditures are expected to consume about 15% of GDP by 2050 in several European countries. The expenditure in the US is expected to be less speedy---from 6.8% of GDP in 2010 to 8.5% in 2050. 
 
Solutions: The developing countries face bigger challenges than the developed ones, as they have briefer time-slots to adjust their infrastructure and policies to come up to the needs of shifting demographics. They will also have to cope with the problem of “getting old before getting rich”. 
 
The developed nations face the problems typically of efficient planning and management, which, as in all issues, is crucial. Allocating resources for the old and ensuring that they get the social support they need will help countries to care for them. Central governments, local bodies and private agencies need to jointly achieve socially coherent environments for the aged. 
 
In a changing world, it would be interesting to identify a more participative and contributing role for the aged. One way of doing it would be to factor ageing against technological growth, globalization and urbanization. By “reinventing” ageing, many countries can help the older members to remain inventive, innovative and contribute to growing changes. 
 
However, many aged people do not want to retire and shift away from active contributors, and are trying to be part of the changing, growing and expanding populations. It would help them to subvert isolation, loneliness, and ensure their financial security. 
 
Hence, as the world gets older, will it get wiser? The trends do point towards such a scene. As the socio-economic planners of today are the aged greybeards of tomorrow, it might stoke them to study the issues that will loom over their lives and take steps to defuse them.

The annual World Population Prospect report, released on Monday to coincide with <keyword id="203146" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-population-day" source="Orion">World Population Day</keyword>, also notes that the global population is growing at its slowest rate since 1950, having fallen to less that one per cent in 2020. While it took the global population 12 years to grow from 7 to 8 billion, it will take approximately 15 years--until 2037-- for it to reach 9 billion, a sign that the overall growth rate of the global population is slowing. In 2022, the two most populous regions were both in <keyword id="21718" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asia" source="Orion">Asia</keyword>: Eastern and South-Eastern Asia with 2.3 billion people and Central and Southern Asia with 2.1 billion. <keyword id="1334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="China" source="Orion">China</keyword> and <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="Orion">India</keyword>, with more than 1.4 billion each, accounted for most of the population in these two regions. Disparate growth rates among the world's largest countries will re-order their ranking by size. According to UN estimates, India is projected to surpass China as the world's most populous country during 2023. Population growth is caused in part by declining levels of mortality, as reflected in increased levels of life expectancy at birth. Globally, life expectancy reached 72.8 years in 2019, an increase of almost 9 years since 1990. Further reductions in mortality are projected to result in an average longevity of around 77.2 years globally in 2050. Countries with the highest fertility levels tend to be those with the lowest income per capita. Global population growth has therefore over time become increasingly concentrated among the world's poorest countries, most of which are in sub-Saharan Africa. In these countries, sustained rapid population growth can thwart the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which remain the world's best pathway toward a happy and healthy future. Even though population growth magnifies the environmental impact of economic development, rising per capita incomes are the main driver of unsustainable patterns of production and consumption. The countries with the highest per capita consumption of material resources and emissions of greenhouse gas emissions tend to be those where income per capita is higher, not those where the population is growing rapidly. Meeting the objectives of the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rise, while achieving the SDGs, critically depends on curbing unsustainable patterns of production and consumption, according to UN. Yet, slower population growth over many decades could help to mitigate the further accumulation of environmental damage in the second half of the current century. World population to hit 8 billion people today

As the People's Bank of China slashes interest rates, the potential for a Chinese slowdown is back on everyone's mind again. 
China's growth has slowed from above 12% to just 7.5% now. That's the government's target, and a lot of economists <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chinas-growth-headed-for-a-nosedive-2014-10">don't even believe that's manageable</a>. That matters for pretty much everyone else in the world too: by at least one measure China is already the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/china-overtakes-us-as-worlds-largest-economy-2014-10">world's largest economy</a>, and if the mammoth exporter sneezes, the rest of the world could easily catch a cold.
And here's the one chart that pretty much guarantees a Chinese slowdown of some sort:

A dependency ratio is simple: it's just the number of people aged between 0-14, combined with those aged over 65, in relation to the working-age population (16-64). Those figures are from the <a href="http://esa.un.org/wpp/Excel-Data/population.htm">United Nations population division</a>.
So if your dependency ratio (the left hand side of that chart) is 90, it means there are 90 people over 65 and under 14 for every 100 people of roughly working age.
And China's is going to spike, under just about any circumstance, because of the country's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/china-one-child-policy-2014-10?op=1">disastrous one-child policy</a>. In the second half of the 20th century, the population was ludicrously child-heavy (which is why the dependency ratio looks high in the 1960s), so there were a lot of young workers and not many dependents during China's rapid growth spurt.
But that big generation is getting older, and it's all uphill from here. It doesn't even matter if China starts having more children, because that will only drive up the dependency ratio in the next few decades. Other countries often look to immigration to solve this: but since the Chinese population is nearly 1.4 billion, this is effectively impossible
With fewer people working, and more pensions and medical care to pay for, even if China performs brilliantly in every other way, a growth slowdown is completely unavoidable.

Tariffs and declining exports slowed China's overall economic growth last year, <a href="https://www.credit-suisse.com/about-us/en/reports-research/global-wealth-report.html">Credit Suisse</a> reported. China also has a substantially larger population than the United States - <a href="https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ch.html">1,384,688,986</a> in 2018 compared to the United States' <a href="https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/us.html">329,256,465</a>.The United States is still home to the largest share of millionaires of any country. <a href="https://www.credit-suisse.com/about-us/en/reports-research/global-wealth-report.html">Credit Suisse</a> found that 40% of the world's millionaires - some 18.6 million are American - compared to China's 4.4 million.<h2>The United States' wealth gap is growing</h2>As <a href="https://www.credit-suisse.com/about-us/en/reports-research/global-wealth-report.html">Credit Suisse</a> outlines, there are three factors that affect how many millionaires a country has: The size of a country's adult population; average wealth; and levels of wealth inequality.In the US, the latter of those three metrics is particularly pronounced when compared to China.The top 1% of Americans now own 40% of the country's wealth, the University of California at Berkeley's Gabriel Zucman wrote in a <a href="https://www.nber.org/papers/w25462">paper</a> circulated by the National Bureau of Economic Research in February. For the first time ever, there are more ultra-wealthy people in China than the US -  and America's growing wealth gap may be partially to blame

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The British Army is now smaller than those of Romania and Bangladesh.</li><li>Its size raises questions about the UK's ability to support NATO, confront Russia, or fight a war.</li></ul>What has happened to the redcoats that defeated Napoleon and helped win an empire that stretched across a quarter of the Earth's surface?The British Army has shrunk to its lowest level since the early 1800s. Years of relentless budget cutbacks have left it with just <a target="_blank" href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/05/30/army-falls-below-73000-first-time-since-napoleonic-area/">73,000 active-duty soldiers</a>. That's a far cry from the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-corruption-rocket-force-water-fuel-xi-jinping-purge-scandal-2024-1">Chinese army</a> of 2 million soldiers, Russia's 1.3 million, or the 460,000 active-duty troops of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-armys-new-plan-russia-china-glaring-problem-crs-2024-5">US Army</a>.Britain's Army is now smaller than those of Romania and Bangladesh, and just slightly larger than those of Canada and Armenia. Until now, its <a target="_blank" href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5a81d66740f0b623026996e1/2017-04440.pdf">lowest manpower level</a> over the last two centuries came in 1823, when it had just 72,000 soldiers. But that understates the current problem. Britain's population in 1823 was just over 20 million, versus around 67 million today. Adjusted for population, the British Army of 1823 would have around 225,000 soldiers today.This raises questions about the ability of Britain to support NATO, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/putin-doesnt-want-nato-war-russia-would-lose-quickly-uk-2024-2">confront Russia</a>, or to engage in any major or long-term conflict. "As things stand, the British Army is a one-trick pony," Nicholas Drummond, a British defense expert and former infantry officer, told Business Insider. "It would deploy, fight for a maximum of six months, and then be fully depleted."The British Army has never had it easy. For centuries, it was the poorer cousin of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uk-navy-ships-breaking-down-britain-struggling-hms-queen-elizabeth-2024-2">Royal Navy</a>, which was seen as the guardian of an island nation and its empire. The writer Rudyard Kipling pointed out in poems like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.kiplingsociety.co.uk/poem/poems_tommy.htm">"Tommy"</a> that Britain doesn't support its army until there's a war:For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"But it's "Savior of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;Thus the British Army's muster rolls have fluctuated depending on the world situation, and the perpetual parsimony of His Majesty's Treasury. In 1812, when it fought Napoleon and burned down Washington, DC, it had <a target="_blank" href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5a81d66740f0b623026996e1/2017-04440.pdf">246,000 soldiers</a>. In 1918, it ended the First World War with 3.8 million personnel, and 2.9 million in 1945.In 1989, the British Army had 156,000 soldiers, or more than twice its present size. Like many armies after the end of the Cold War, it was downsized due to a perceived lack of need, difficulties in recruiting soldiers, and the belief that precision-guided weapons meant fewer boots on the ground.However, the shocking casualties and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uk-learning-ukraine-russia-new-focus-trench-war-training-2024-2">trench warfare in the Ukraine</a> conflict suggest that future wars will be attritional, with victory going to the nations that have the most stamina, industrial might and resources to sustain losses. Yet with just 28,000 Army reservists, Britain lacks manpower to flesh out undermanned units in wartime, or to replace losses. Even the Army's current two combat divisions aren't fully capable."Right now, the British Army cannot generate a single division, let alone two," Drummond said."It simply doesn't have the supporting units needed to sustain it when deployed.""We have no second echelon force to provide a third, reserve division, casualty replacements, or to create the basis of a larger wartime Army."Drummond argues that today, Britain needs two readily deployable mechanized divisions, one using tracked vehicles and a lighter unit on wheels, each of 25,000 troops. "In addition to this, we need training regiments and Army schools, and a regular reserve. Historically this has required 30,000 to 40,000 additional personnel. So the irreducible peacetime strength of the Army is 80,000 to 90,000 soldiers."If money is the root of all evil, then the British armed forces have been sinned against for 35 years. In 1984, the UK's defense spending was 5.5% of GDP. It is currently a bit over 2 percent, with the newly elected Labor government of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uk-labour-party-back-in-power-rishi-sunak-concede-defeat-2024-7">Prime Minister Keir Starmer</a> pledging to honor the previous Conservative government's to raise the defense budget to 2.5%. This is less than America's 3.5% spent on defense, though it exceeds NATO's goal — which many members have yet to fulfill — of 2% of GDP allocated to the military.It's not just the Army that is struggling. The British armed forces have been cut back to 183,000 personnel, and even then, they can't find enough recruits. A shortage of sailors has forced the Royal Navy to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12928373/Royal-Navy-sailors-forced-decommission-two-warships-new-frigates-wont-unmanned.html">decommission warships</a>, and the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/british-raf-gets-f-35s-but-fleet-has-readiness-maintenance-issues-2019-1">Royal Air Force</a> can't attract enough <a target="_blank" href="https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/raf-admits-urgent-need-to-solve-shortage-of-trained-pilots-2083957">pilots</a>.To be fair, the problem is caused by more than stingy government bean-counters. With many nations abolishing conscription, and civilian careers seen as more lucrative, this is not a good time to be a military recruiter anywhere. But as a nation past its imperial glory, Britain has prided itself on punching above its weight. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Whitman County, Washington, was the fastest-growing US county based on a year's worth of data.</li><li>The Census Bureau released population estimates for counties for July 1, 2022, along with other county data.</li></ul>Southern and western counties keep growing while many northern counties in states like New York and Pennsylvania are shrinking, the latest Census population growth data suggests.The Census Bureau released <a href="https://www.census.gov/data/tables/time-series/demo/popest/2020s-counties-total.html">county-level population estimates</a> for July 1, 2022, along with net migration and natural change estimates for counties, on Thursday."After some of the nation's most populous counties experienced significant outmigration and population declines in 2021, overall patterns of population growth and decline are moving towards pre-pandemic rates for the nation's 3,144 counties," a news <a href="https://www.census.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2023/population-estimates-counties.html">release</a> from the Census Bureau on Thursday stated.Insider calculated the percent change from July 1, 2021, to July 1, 2022, for the various populations. You can hover over the map below to see the populations during these two years and the percent change based on these population estimates.Many counties that fall in the middle of the country saw a decline from July 1, 2021, to July 1, 2022. For instance, Greeley County and Stanton County in Kansas saw their populations fall. North Dakota also had many of its counties see their populations tumble, including Towner County and Mountrail County.All of Maine's counties saw an increase. Almost every county in Idaho saw its population climb between 2021 and 2022.Additionally, Christine Hartley, assistant division chief for estimates and projections in the Census Bureau's population division, said "many counties with large universities saw their populations fully rebound this year as students returned" per the news release.That includes Whitman County, Washington, which led the way for population growth among counties. The release noted this county is "home to Washington State University." It also noted that this comes after the county saw its population tumble by 9.6% between July 1, 2020, and July 1, 2021.Below are the counties that saw their populations spike the most among areas that had populations of at least 20,000 in July 1, 2021, and July 1, 2022.Based on percent changes, Whitman County was the only county that saw growth in the double digits.Additionally, among these 10 large counties with the highest percent increases were five Texas counties. For instance, Kaufman County in Texas saw the second-highest percent increase among the counties with populations of at least 20,000. Dawson County and Lumpkin County in Georgia were the two Georgia counties that were among the 10 fastest-growing large counties. They saw percent increases of 5.8%.Four parishes (the state's equivalent to counties) in Louisiana saw the largest percent declines among the counties with populations of at least 20,000 in both years. The following are the large counties that saw the largest percent declines during this time frame.In addition to the four Louisiana parishes, two Florida counties were among the 10 counties with the largest declines, including Baker County. However, Lassen County in California had the greatest percent decline among these large counties, falling by 6.0%.
