The union alleges that Infosys has delayed the <keyword id="22570539" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="onboarding-process" source="keywords">onboarding process</keyword> for around 2,000 <keyword id="22859483" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fresh-engineering-graduates" source="keywords">fresh engineering graduates</keyword> for over two years, leaving them in a state of uncertainty and distress. <h2>Infosys delayed freshers' onboarding for more than two years</h2>According to NITES, these graduates were selected for roles such as system engineer and digital specialist engineer as early as April 2022. Despite receiving offer letters, the onboarding process has been repeatedly postponed. The affected graduates were required to participate in unpaid pre-training programs and undergo additional, unexpected assessments, further complicating their entry into the workforce. NITES claims that despite fulfilling all the prerequisites set by Infosys, these young professionals have been kept in limbo, leading to significant frustration and anxiety. The union views this situation as a serious breach of trust by Infosys, which has long been regarded as one of the pillars of India’s IT industry. Harpreet Singh Saluja, President of NITES, expressed deep concern over the situation, emphasizing the broader implications for the Indian IT sector. “We believe that this is not just a breach of trust by one of India’s largest IT companies, but also a significant issue that impacts the future of our country’s <keyword id="22360158" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-workforce" source="keywords">IT workforce</keyword> and economy. We are calling on the government to take immediate and strict action against Infosys to ensure that such exploitative practices are halted and that the rights of these young professionals are protected,” Saluja said, according to a report by The Economic Times. The complaint filed by NITES highlights that even after long delays, the graduates were asked to participate in an unpaid virtual pre-training program from July 1 to July 24, 2024. They were promised final joining dates of either August 19 or September 2, 2024. However, despite completing the training, they were informed that they would need to retake the exam offline, once again without pay. This has only added to their frustration and uncertainty about their future with the company. <h2>Infosys’ Power Programme</h2>In a contrasting development, Infosys is also making headlines for its recent campus placement drive, where it has introduced a new 'power programme.' According to a report by The Times of India, the company is offering pay packages of up to Rs 9 lakh per annum to select colleges, a significant increase from its standard entry-level packages, which typically range from Rs 3-3.5 lakh. This move is seen as part of Infosys’ strategy to attract highly specialized talent in areas such as coding, software development, cloud computing, AI/ML, and cybersecurity. Infosys plans to hire between 15,000 and 20,000 graduates in FY25. During its earnings call last month, Infosys announced plans to resume campus placements and off-campus fresher hiring in the current fiscal year. The top four IT firms in India are expected to collectively add about 82,000 freshers in FY25. Infosys delays onboarding of 2,000 graduates for more than 2 years, NITES files complaint

The Union Ministry of Labour and Employment is working on new labour codes which will make way for a three-day weekend, but will keep the <keyword id="73926" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Working-hours">working hours</keyword> at 48 hours a week, which means employees might be subject to long days. “Companies will have to give three days’ of paid leaves and 12 hours of work per day to their employees with the consent of the workers. We are not forcing employees or employers. It gives flexibility. It’s an enabling provision in sync with the changing work culture. We have tried to make some changes. Especially, given that employees, in many cases, are made to work beyond five days in a week currently. In India, employees work way beyond 48 hours a week – crossing the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) norms of working. According to the labour standards. “the general standard is 48 regular hours of work per week, with a maximum of eight hours per day.” says the ILO website. The changes will be a part of the new labour codes, whose draft rules are being formulated by the government. It will also provide free medical check-ups to workers through the Employees State Insurance Corporation, according to <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/new-labour-codes-to-allow-4-day-work-week/article33784975.ece">reports.</a> The four-day work week is not a new topic. It started off as a debate in Germany when the country’s largest trade union – IG Metall, called for a four-day week in 2020. And this, even when Germany already has the lowest working hours in a week at 34.2 hours. But there are also challenges said the WEF survey, especially, in the service sector where four days might not be enough to meet consumer expectations and demands. India is considering four-day work weeks but with longer shifts

Total employment generated by nine select sectors stood at 3.10 crore in the July-September 2021 quarter, which is 2 lakh more than that of the April-June period, according to a quarterly employment survey by the <keyword id="126926" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="labour-ministry" source="Orion">labour ministry</keyword> released on Monday. The quarterly employment survey (QES) report released by Union Labour Minister <keyword id="1850634" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bhupender-yadav" source="Orion">Bhupender Yadav</keyword> said that total employment numbers in the nine select sectors were 3.08 crore in April-June 2021. The rise shows improvement in economic activities after lifting of lockdown restrictions by states to curb the spread of deadly virus after the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country in April 2021. These nine sectors are Manufacturing, Construction, Trade, Transport, Education, Health, Accommodation and Restaurant, IT/ BPO and <keyword id="6354241" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-services" source="Orion">Financial Services</keyword>, accounting for a majority of the total employment in the non-farm establishments. This is the second report in the series. First report was for April-June 2021. The study covers establishment with 10 or more employees. Releasing the report, Yadav stated that these studies will aid government to achieve its mission of last-mile delivery and evidence-based policy making for workers. The project -- Capacity Building by MSDE in Microsoft Digital Productivity Skills -- will digitally empower them to provide efficient and effective citizen-centric services to the vulnerable and underprivileged sections of society. The courses will be created under two categories -- Beginners and Advanced courses of 12 hours duration each -- and the learners would be enabled with access to Advanced course after receiving the certificate of completion in the Beginners course. Microsoft joins hands with MSDE, CBC to train 2.5 mn civil servants in India

Around 8.2 lakh members of retirement fund body <keyword id="6372438" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="epfo">EPFO</keyword> and private PF trusts have dipped into their savings and withdrew ₹3,243.17 crore to sustain in the lockdown imposed by the government to contain COVID-19. Earlier last month on March 28, the <keyword id="6423266" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="employees-provident-fund-organisation">Employees Provident Fund Organisation</keyword> (EPFO) had allowed formal sector workers under its ambit to withdraw a non-refundable advance from their <keyword id="415826" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="retirement-savings">retirement savings</keyword> to deal with hardships due to lockdown. "EPFO under <keyword id="602690" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-ministry-of-labour">Union Ministry of Labour</keyword> &amp; Employment, has settled a total of 12.91 lakhs claims, including 7.40 lakhs COVID-19 claims under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY) package," a Labour Ministry statement said. Claims settlement involves disbursal of total amount of ₹4,684.52 crore which includes ₹2,367.65 crore COVID claims under the PMGKY package. The exempted private PF trusts have also risen to the occasion amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the ministry said. As on April 27, 2020, ₹875.52 crore have been disbursed to 79,743 PF members as advance for COVID-19 by the exempted PF Trusts under this scheme, with 222 private sector establishments disbursing ₹338.23 crore to 54,641 beneficiaries, 76 public sector establishments disbursing ₹524.75 crores to 24,178 beneficiaries and 23 cooperative sector establishments disbursing ₹12.54 crores to 924 claimants, it said. Private PF trusts manage their employees' PF money and account themselves. They are exempted to file monthly PF return and thus also called exempted establishments. Tata Consultancy Services Mumbai, HCL Technologies Ltd. Gurugram and HDFC Bank Powai, Mumbai are the top three exempted establishments in the private sector, both in terms of number of claims settled and amount disbursed, it said. In public sector, ONGC Dehradun, Neyveli Lignite Corporation Neyveli and BHEL Trichy are the top three exempted establishments to have settled maximum number of COVID-19 advance claims; whereas, Neyveli Lignite Corporation Neyveli, ONGC Dehradun and Vishakhapatnam Steel Plant Vishakhapatnam are top three establishments in terms of amount disbursed to EPF members, it said. The provision for a special withdrawal from the EPF Scheme to fight COVID-19 pandemic is part of the PMGKY scheme announced by the government and an urgent notification on the matter was made to introduce a para 68 L (3) of the EPF Scheme on 28th March, 2020. Under this provision non-refundable withdrawal to the extent of the basic wages and dearness allowances for three months or up to 75 per cent of the amount standing to member's credit in the EPF account, whichever is less, is provided. Despite only one-third staff being able to work due to lockdown, EPFO is committed to serve its members during this difficult situation and EPFO offices are functional to help them during these testing times, it said. Workers have withdrawn over ₹3,200 crore from their retirement savings to survive the Coronavirus lockdown

New Delhi, Nov 14 () Labour Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar on Thursday pitched for a separate ministry for promoting cooperatives in the country, saying they are effective institutions where people can find job opportunities.
 Currently, cooperatives come under the aegis of the Agriculture Ministry.
 "There is a need to form Ministry of Cooperatives so that cooperatives can develop as professional and effective institutions for playing an important role in socio-economic development of the country," Gangwar said at the inaugural function of 66th All India Cooperative Week organised by the National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI).
 Cooperatives are effective institutions where people can find opportunities for jobs. However, there is a need to rise above politics so that cooperatives can function professionally, he was quoted as saying in a statement.
 Cooperatives can be the best institutions for welfare of women and backward classes of the society, he added.
 Gangwar further said the government is committed to the welfare of labour force in the country. The Labour Ministry has been giving priority to simplification of the labour laws.
 Speaking on the occasion, International Cooperative Alliance (Asia-Pacific Region) Regional Director Balu Iyer said aspirational youth are looking forward to cooperatives as a start-up, and they need to strengthen and professionalise themselves so that they not only provide job opportunities to youth but also make them entrepreneurs.
 He further said that cooperatives can be the best institution for doubling farmers' income.
 Earlier, NCUI President Chandra Pal Singh Yadav said the government should support and strengthen cooperatives. 
 Pointing out that India is the biggest cooperative movement in the world, he said cooperatives need to be provided tax relief at a time when corporates are given tax relief.

In his written reply to Unstarred Question 174 on 'Migrant Workers returning to Hometown', Union Labour Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar said "No such data is maintained" when asked whether the government is aware that a number of migrant workers lost lives during their return to their hometowns and if so, the details of the same, state-wise. Responding to the next question on whether the government has provided any compensation/economic assistance to the victims' family and if so, the details thereof, the minister said "question does not arise". On another question on whether the migrant workers returned to their homes by walking due to no arrangements by the Union government in time, Gangwar said "the Indian Railways has operated more than 4,611 Shramik Special trains for convenience of the workers". The minister said more than 63.07 lakh migrant workers have been shifted to various destinations located in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and other states. Food and water was also provided free of cost to the workers during their journey, he said. Gangwar responded to the question raised by Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) MP Kani K. The government has no provision for economic assistance to migrant families, says Labour Ministry

New Delhi, The Northern India Textile Mills' Association (NITMA) has urged the government to raise customs duty on man-made <keyword id="943240" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="yarns">yarns</keyword> to 10% in the <keyword id="4121466" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="upcoming-Union-Budget">upcoming Union Budget</keyword>. The customs duty on man-made yarn is currently at 5%. According to the industry body, monthly average <keyword id="35091" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="imports">imports</keyword> of Virgin Polyester Spun Yarn have increased manifold from 2015 to 2020. Imports from Vietnam alone have increased over 100 times, as per NITMA. Sanjay Garg, President of NITMA said that representations regarding the import concerns have been sent to the ministries of finance and <keyword id="62486" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Textiles">textiles</keyword>. He noted that the man-made yarn sector is one of the largest employment-generating segments within the textile industry and is highly capital and labour-intensive industry as well. Garg was of the view that the unreasonably low-priced imports of man-made yarn into India have been causing considerable amount of injury to domestic manufacturers for around the last five years. In a statement, NITMA said that the surge in imports may damage the domestic man-made fibre (MMF) industry and may lead to non-performing assets and closure of units along with huge employment loss. NITMA urges to raise custom duty on man-made yarns by 10% in upcoming Union Budget

As the government has already run the Shramik special trains to ferry migrant workers to their native places, the Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday issued a Standard Operating Protocols (SOPs) that mentions strict adherence to health, hygiene and social distancing. The SOPs for movement of persons by train include movement of passengers to and fro railway stations only on confirmed e-ticket and after compulsory medical screening. Only asymptomatic persons will be allowed to travel as per the SOP issued by the <keyword id="83450" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-home-secretary">Union Home Secretary</keyword> Ajay Bhalla to all state Chief Secretaries and administrators of <keyword id="390245" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-Territories">Union Territories</keyword> (UTs). The SOPs are in continuation of <keyword id="6359327" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Home-Ministry">Home Ministry</keyword>'s May 1 and May 5 orders conferred under Disaster Management Act allowing for movement of persons by train. The Home Ministry SOPs directed states and UTs for its strict implementation so that migrant workers can be provided the train facility and simultaneously all the norms to contain the COVID-19 pandemic are duly followed. The pandemic has claimed over 2,206 deaths and infected over 67,000 persons across the country till Monday. Movement of trains shall be permitted by the <keyword id="76223" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Railways">Ministry of Railways</keyword> (MoR) in a graded manner in consultation with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and MHA, the SOPs mention. The train schedule, protocols for booking, entry and movement of passengers, and coach service specifications shall be widely publicised by the MoR, it said, adding that the movement of the passengers as well as the driver of the vehicle transporting them to and fro the railway stations from where they shall be allowed to travel on confirmed tickets. It is also mentioned in the SOP that the MoR will provide sanitiser to each passenger at the entry and exit points at the station and in coaches, and all passengers will be wearing face masks during entry and travel. On arrival at their destinations, the travelling passengers will have to adhere to such health protocols as are prescribed by the destination states and UT, the SOP reads. The SOPs followed a fresh order issued by the Home Ministry directing all states and UTs to allow the Shramik special trains to operate without any hindrance within their jurisdiction and facilitate faster movement of stranded migrant workers to their native places. It came a day after the Ministry of Railways announced 15 pairs of air conditioned trains from New Delhi to several cities from May 12. The order followed the Centre's ongoing measures to facilitate bus and train facility to thousands of migrant labourers who have been stranded in various shelter homes and their work places and have been trying to get home as they do not have jobs to survive in cities due to the ongoing lockdown imposed to break the chain of COVID-19 pandemic since March 24. As the Lockdown 3.0 will last till May 17, to ease further hardship on the stranded migrant labourers, the Union Home Secretary wrote a letter to the Chief Secretaries of all states for the faster movement of this population. The <keyword id="6355455" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-railways">Indian Railways</keyword> has operated 428 Shramik special trains since May 1 and ferried home more than 4.5 lakh migrants stranded in various parts of the country amid the coronavirus-induced lockdown, officials said on Sunday. The officials have said that out of the 287 trains which had been run already in the first nine days, 127 terminated in Uttar Pradesh, 87 in Bihar, 24 in Madhya Pradesh, 20 in Odisha, 16 in Jharkhand, four in Rajasthan, three in Maharashtra, two each in Telangana and West Bengal, and one each in Andhra Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh till May 9. These trains have ferried migrants to various cities in different states like Tiruchchirappalli, Titlagarh, Barauni, Khandwa, Jagannathpur, Khurda Road, Chhapra, Balia, Gaya, Purnia, Varanasi. Every Shramik special train has 24 coaches, each with a capacity of 72 seats. However, only 54 people are allowed in a coach and the middle berth is not allotted to any passenger to maintain social distancing norms. SOP for movement of migrants workers by trains focus social distancing

For a man who has been elected to the Parliament eight times, Santosh Gangwar has remained a low-profile man within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Finally, he has received the biggest role he has ever held in the government. 71-year old Gangwar has been appointed a minister of state with independent charge for labour and employment. Gangwar has been elected from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh since 1989, except once in 2009 when he lost by a narrow margin. He was Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Ministry of Textile till 2016, after which he was sworn in as Minister of State for Finance. He worked on the roll out of the goods and services tax. "Since the labour-intensive sectors will be benefitted, it is expected to create additional employment of at least 10 lakhs jobs in India, create ample opportunities for investment, promotion of start-ups. Similarly, it would provide enhanced job opportunities for Indians in Australia and increased remittance flows to India," Goyal said. The Australian parliament has announced the passing of the <keyword id="120586" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="free-trade-agreement" source="Orion">free trade agreement</keyword> (FTA) with India, Goyal on Tuesday said adding that the initial size of bilateral trade between the two countries can go up to around USD 45-50 billion in the next five-to-six years. Addressing a press conference on the trade deal following the approval of the Agreement by the Australian Parliament, Goyal said that duties on 100 per cent tariff lines would be eliminated by Australia under this deal. The Minister underscored that the Agreement was finalized after extensive and exhaustive stakeholder consultations and pointed out that it was "unanimously accepted" and supported by all quarters. The deal which was signed on April 2, 2022, is now ready for ratification for its early implementation. The Agreement will enter into force shortly, on a mutually convenient date once both sides have completed their domestic processes, India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement on Tuesday evening right after minister Goyal's presser. Australia is an important strategic partner of India and both democracies are part of the four-nation QUAD, Trilateral Supply Chain Initiative and the Indo-Pacific Economic Forum (IPEF). The trade relationship facilitated through the deal will open a new chapter on India-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership between two vibrant economies with shared interests and trade complementarities. This Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement is the first trade agreement of India with a developed country after more than a decade, the statement said. New Delhi, Mar 23 () The Labour Ministry has asked states and central ministries concerned to ensure that employers do not fire their employees, particularly casual or contractual workers, or reduce their wages amid COVID-19 outbreak as it would deepen the crisis.The ministry has also asked the state and ministries that all employees going on leave during the lockdown period, they should be deemed on duty without any consequential pay cut. "In the backdrop of such challenging situation, all the employers of public or private establishments may be advised to extend their coordination by not terminating their employees, particularly casual or contractual workers from the job or reduce their wages," Labour Secretary H K Smariya said in a letter to all chief secretaries and concerned ministries. "If any worker takes leave, he should be deemed to be on duty without any consequential deduction in wages for this period. Further, if the place of employment is to be made non-operational due to COVID-19, the employee of such units will be deemed to be on duty."Samariya is of the view of that the termination of employees from the job or reduction in wages in this scenario would further deepen the crises and will not only weaken the financial condition of the employee but also hamper their morale to combat their fight with this epidemic. He has asked the chief secretaries and concerned ministries to issue necessary advisory to employers/owners of all establishment under their purview.The Labour Secretary noted that the World is facing a catastrophic situation due to outbreak of COVID-19 and in order to combat this challenge, coordinated joint efforts of all sections of society are required.In view of COVID-19, there may be incidences that employee's/worker's services are dispensed with on this pretext or the employee/worker are forced to go on leave without wage/salaries, said Samariya expressing his apprehensions.
