New Delhi, May 17 () The Indian Olympic Association on Sunday requested the Sports Ministry to sanction one-time financial assistance for itself, the National Sports Federations and the State Olympic Associations to tide over the crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. IOA President Narinder Batra wrote a letter to Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju, asking for financial assistance to resume sporting activities once the government gives the go ahead. Batra requested the ministry to grant Rs 10 crore for the IOA, Rs 5 crore each for Olympic sports NSFs, Rs 2.50 crore for the non-Olympic sports NSFs and Rs 1 crore each for the SOAs. "I appeal/request to you Sir, The Hon'ble Union Sports Minister Mr Kiren Rijiju to take up with Government of India to support/give one time grant to the NOC of India, National Sports Federations and State Olympic Associations in this pandemic period to enable them to tide over the cash crunch being faced by them," Batra wrote. "...It (the pandemic) has affected the business, employment as well as the Sports Activities in their respective countries," he said. New Delhi, Jul 12 () Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju is set to hold a two-day online meeting with his counterparts from various states and Union Territories, starting July 14 in order to chalk out a roadmap for the development of grassroot-level sports. The meeting will also discuss activities of Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) and National Service Scheme (NSS) during the coronavirus-forced lockdown period. Speaking about the decision to hold the meeting, Rijiju said, "The country is in the second phase of unlock now and it is important to have a dialogue with the states to align the way forward for sports and youth related activities. "During the lockdown, activities of both youth affairs and sports have continued keeping in mind the larger goals that have been set. Rijiju also praised the 75 lakh volunteers who have helped the civic bodies in country's war against the dreaded virus. "Our NYKS and NSS volunteers have worked relentlessly alongside civil bodies to help in the fight against COVID-19. "About 75 lakh volunteers across India have been involved in creating awareness about safety and health guidelines, distribution of masks, helping the elderly among many other things. Their contribution in this fight against the pandemic has won them praise from various state governments. He also spoke about the online classes which has received good response from athletes. "In sports too, despite closure of on-field training, online training has been conducted for athletes of all levels as well as for coaches, so that athletes and coaches could remain closer to the sport. "We want to assess the impact of all these activities and also plan the way forward, in collaboration with the states," he added. According to a Sports Ministry statement, the agenda of the meeting is to review action taken during the pandemic, as well as hold discussions on restarting sporting activities at the state-level and identification of budding sports talent through competitions at block and district levels. During the meeting, inclusion of fitness and sports as part of the curriculum in all schools across the country will also come up for discussion. The two-day meet will also deliberate on plans to conduct Khelo India events and Youth Festivals later this year or early next year. "Strengthening of the sports ecosystem at the grassroot level is crucial if we want to realise the dream of making India one of the top 10 countries at the Olympic podium in 2028, and we must start that process now," the minister said. "The Sports Ministry has already decided to set up Khelo India State Centre of Excellence (KISCE) in all states and UTs. Further, 1000 Khelo India Centres (KIC) at the district level will be set up to enable local talent to be identified and trained in 14 identified Olympic sport and traditional sports. "Both the KISCEs and KICs will strengthen the grassroot-level sports ecosystem in India in a big way, and states have a big role to play in it. Also, the one state, one sport policy that the government has made needs to be discussed and implemented early." Union Budget 2024-25: FM Sitharaman unveils big sops for Bihar, Andhra Pradesh

Karnataka on Tuesday banned strike by workers of Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) at its Bidadi plant and directed the management to lift the lockout for resuming production soon. "I have directed the Toyota workers' union to withdraw its strike and told the <keyword id="4081652" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="company-management">company management</keyword> to lift the week-long lockout declared on November 10 to resume production soon," state Deputy Chief Minister C.N. Ashwath Narayan told reporters here. As the union and its management were in a deadlock over the strike and the lockout following the suspension of 40 workers, Narayan held talks with them at the state secretariat in the city in the presence of state Labour Minister Shivaram Hebbar and the state labour commissioner. "A notification will be issued on Wednesday under section 10 (3) of the <keyword id="455743" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Industrial-Disputes-Act">Industrial Disputes Act</keyword> to ban the strike by the workers and to lift the lockout that was imposed to prevent any damage to the factory," asserted Narayan. The lockout was declared after 1,200 workers resorted to a sit-in strike in the plant at Bidadi in protest against the suspension of their union member. As the strike continued, the company declared lockout and suspended 39 more workers on November 13 for refusing to withdraw their 'illegal' agitation. As the 23-year-old joint venture between the Japanese auto behemoth Toyota and <keyword id="10289535" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="kirloskar-brothers-of-pune">Kirloskar Brothers of Pune</keyword> is located in Ramanagara district, Narayan mediated to resolve the standoff as he is in-charge of the adjust district. "At a conciliatory meeting between the union and the management at the labour commissioner office in the city in the evening, the company offered to lift the lockout subject to an assurance by the union that its member-workers will maintain normalcy and cordial relations in the factory to resume operations," said an official of the labour department. New Delhi, Feb 26 () The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the National Technical Textiles Mission with an outlay of Rs 1,480 crore to position India as a leading manufacturer of technical fabrics that are mostly used in industrial applications. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had in the budget on February 1 announced a proposal to set up a National Technical Textiles Mission with a four-year implementation period from 2020-21 to 2023-24. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Textiles Minister Smriti Irani told reporters here. Technical textiles are material and products made primarily for their technical properties and functional requirements. They have wide usage such as agro-textiles, medical textiles, geo-textiles, protection-textiles, industrial-textiles, sports-textiles and many other usages. Use of technical textiles have benefits of increased productivity in agriculture, horticulture and aquaculture fields, better protection of military, para-military, police and security forces, stronger and sturdier transportation infrastructure for highways, railways, ports and airports and in improving hygiene and health-care of general public. In terms of the projections of the last baseline survey on technical textiles submitted in 2015, the market size in India for the year 2017-18 is projected as Rs 1,16,217 crore. Although there is no projection in the last baseline study with regard to the projections for the 2020-21, taking into account the current trend of growth and various initiatives of the Government, domestic market size of the technical textiles is expected to cross Rs 2 lakh crore by the year 2020-21. (Eds: Adding more inputs and quotes) New Delhi, May 17 () The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Sunday requested the Sports Ministry to sanction one-time financial assistance of over Rs 200 crore for various sports governing bodies in the country, saying sponsors won't come forward until next year making "hand-holding by government" a necessity. Citing the halt on sports activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, IOA President Narinder Batra, in a letter to Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju, said if help is not granted, it would be difficult to restart operations smoothly once the lockdown to contain the virus is lifted. Batra requested the ministry to grant Rs 10 crore for the IOA, Rs 5 crore each for National Sports Federations (NSFs) of Olympic sports, Rs 2.50 crore each for the non-Olympic sports NSFs and Rs 1 crore each for the State Olympic Associations. This adds up to approximately Rs 220 crore. "Due to the the ongoing pandemic and lockdown, we the sports bodies are unlikely to get any Sponsorship and hence we may find it very difficult to restart our activities effectively," he wrote. "We do not see sponsors coming forward till/and after Olympics in 2021 to assist us and hence we will require handholding by the Union Government," he added. Batra said the assistance will "enable them to tide over the cash crunch being faced by them". "The whole world now is facing an Extreme Difficult time due to the Covid -19 Pandemic...It (the pandemic) has affected the business, employment as well as the Sports Activities in their respective countries," he said. "All sports competitions training and other related activities have come to a standstill and now in order to restart all these activities, it will require lot of financial support to IOA/NSFs/SOAs," he added. Batra, who also heads the International Hockey federation (FIH), said the the IOA is ready for an audit of the funds if they are allotted. "After the pandemic when restrictions are lifted, we then will have to restart and rebuild all over once again. There are many conditions which will now be attached with running of daily affairs and they will require money/cash to implement," Batra said. "We will have no objection for providing with the funds utilization certificates, duly certified &amp; verified by C&amp;AG approved auditor/s," he added. Interestingly, the Olympic body and its member NSFs had donated close to Rs 9.5 crore to the PM CARES and various Chief Minister's Relief funds to fight the pandemic.
