The COVID cases in India have seen an upward trend in the past few days with the daily fresh infections ranging between 2,994 on April 1 to 3,824 on April 2 and 3,641 on April 3 now dropped to 3038 in the last 24 hours. With 2,069 recoveries in the last 24 hours, total recoveries have increased to 4,41,77,204. India's recovery rate is currently at 98.76 per cent. The daily and weekly positivity rates are 1.84 per cent and 2.49 per cent respectively. A total of 1,894 doses were administered in the last 24 hours. Of the 92.20 crore total tests conducted so far, 1,64,740 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours. Under the Nationwide Vaccination Drive, India has so far administered 220.65 crore Covid-19 <keyword id="24209" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vaccine" source="Orion">Vaccine</keyword> doses (95.20 crores <keyword id="7334317" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="second-dose" source="Orion">Second Dose</keyword> and 22.86 crores <keyword id="12813770" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="precaution-dose" source="Orion">Precaution Dose</keyword>), of which 9,497 doses were administered in the last 24 hours. In the wake of rising COVID cases in India, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Monday said that Omicron's sub-variant which is circulating in the country has not led to an increase in hospitalisations and there is no need to worry. The Minister said that there is a need to remain vigilant. "We need to remain alert but there is no need to worry. Currently, the sub-variant of Omicron which is circulating in the country hasn't increased hospitalisations," Mandaviya said. Remain alert says Union Health Minister as India records 3,038 fresh Covid-19 cases

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Sunday cautioned that the ICMR's Sero survey report should not create a sense of complacency in people, as the Indian population is not even close to achieving herd immunity. His warning, in the third episode of the 'Sunday Samvaad' weekly interaction he has been holding with his social media followers every Sunday for the last three weeks, comes on the day when the World Health Organisation (WHO) also advised against any attempts to achieve herd immunity or to hope that it will eventually save people. "Herd immunity or natural population immunity is not an option. Let's put our energy, focus, workforce, actions into what works," said Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO's <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">Covid-19</keyword> Technical Lead. Harsh Vardhan noted that the first sero-survey conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in May revealed that the nationwide prevalence of novel coronavirus infection was only 0.73 per cent. "Even the soon-to-be-released second sero-survey's indications are that we are far from having achieved any kind of herd immunity which necessitates that all of us should continue following Covid-appropriate behaviour," he added. On the emerging evidence that the disease not only impacts the lungs but other organ systems too, especially cardiovascular and renal, the Minister said that the Union Health Ministry has already set up committees of experts to look into these facets. Besides, he informed that that states and Union Territories have been advised to lower the prices of Covid tests. "In the early days of the pandemic, as the kits were imported, the price tended to be high. But now, supplies of testing kits have also stabilised, and domestic production of these kits have also commenced," Harsh Vardhan said, adding that his ministry has written to states and UTs to engage private laboratories at mutually agreeable lower rates. The minister also informed that he had spoken personally to several state Health Ministers regarding the reduction of prices of testing in their respective states. The Rajya Sabha on Friday passed two Bills -- the Indian Medicine Central Council (Amendment) Bill, 2020 and Homoeopathy Central Council (Amendment) Bill, 2020. Replying during the discussion on the Bills, <keyword id="2468968" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Health-Minister-Harsh-Vardhan">Health Minister Harsh Vardhan</keyword> said, "The Ordinance was necessitated as Parliament was not in session." The Bill brought by the Centre amends <keyword id="9958977" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-homoeopathy-central-council-act">the Homoeopathy Central Council Act</keyword>, 1973. After becoming an Act, the Central Council of Homoeopathy will regulate homeopathic education and practice. The Bill replaces the Homoeopathy Central Council (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020 which was promulgated on April 24, 2020. The period for the supersession of the Central Council -- The 1973 Act -- was amended in 2018 to provide for the supersession of the Central Council of Homoeopathy. The Central Council was required to be reconstituted within one year from the date of its supersession. This period was amended in 2019 to require the reconstitution of the Central Council in two years. The central government constituted a Board of Governors to exercise the powers of the Central Council. The Bill amends the Act to increase the period for the supersession of the Central Council from two years to three years. The resolution moved by K. C. Venugopal, E. Kareem and K. K.Ragesh was defeated. But Ragesh raised a point of order for the right to reply as the mover of the resolution and asked about the role of the state governments in this Bill. Rajya Sabha passes Homeopathy Bills

Union Health Minister <keyword id="196226" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harsh-Vardhan">Harsh Vardhan</keyword> clarified on Sunday that the government is yet to take a final decision on phase-3 trials of the Russian COVID-19 vaccine candidate Sputnik V. "This issue is still under consideration and no final decision on Sputnik V vaccine developed by Russia has been taken as yet," he stated while addressing his social media audience during his weekly programme 'Sunday Samvaad'. The clarification by the minister has come after a pharmaceutical giant, which partnered with Russia's sovereign wealth fund in September to conduct final trials and distribution of the Sputnik V, sought permission for the same from <keyword id="682334" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Drugs-Controller-General-of-India">Drugs Controller General of India</keyword> (DCGI) on Friday. Hyderabad-based drugmaker Dr Reddy's Laboratories (DRL) had partnered the <keyword id="1397612" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russian-Direct-Investment-Fund">Russian Direct Investment Fund</keyword> (RDIF) last month to conduct final-stage human trials and distribution of Russia's Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine in India. Two days ago, the DRL had applied to the DCGI for permission to conduct the phase-3 human clinical trials of Sputnik. Upon regulatory approval in India, RDIF will supply Dr Reddy's 100 million doses of the vaccine, the firm had said last month. The trials of Sputnik V are mired in controversy. The Russian government registered Sputnik V as a COVID-19 vaccine without conducting final clinical trials. Besides, the phase I and II of the trials involved merely 76 participants. The Indian scientists and medical experts are also of the opinion that the Indian government should conduct phase-2 trials of the vaccine to prove its safety and efficacy. Russia, had announced in August that it has developed the world's first <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> vaccine. However, the country had made the announcement before completion of phase-3 trials. A vaccine is deemed safe to be commercially available only after a larger efficacy trial which involves thousands of participants in the phase-3. However, the study of Sputnik trials published in The Lancet declared the vaccine as "Safe, well-tolerated, and does not cause serious adverse events in <keyword id="10049599" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="healthy-adult-volunteers">healthy adult volunteers</keyword>." As per the study, two small trials were conducted on two groups involving 38 healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 60, each. They were given a two-part immunisation. Each participant was given a dose of the first part of the vaccine, and then a booster with the second part, 21 days later. These volunteers were monitored over 42 days, and it was found that all of them developed antibodies against the virus within three weeks. After widespread criticism of conducting relatively small and early trials before registering Sputnik V as a COVID-19 vaccine, Russia said that a more rigorous phase-3 <keyword id="122283" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Clinical-trial">clinical trial</keyword> has been planned with the involvement of 40,000 volunteers "from different age and risk groups".
