When election fever hits India, <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword>, too, must have its say. Even before the horrex thrill of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/entertainment/movies/Box-Office-RaginiMMS-2-Thrills-All-Gang-Of-Ghosts-Lacks-Finesse/articleshow/32673836.cms">Ragini MMS 2</a> could be well purged out of our system, cine-goers had to face a ‘thoughtful’ <keyword id="2179860" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Political-movie">political movie</keyword> in the form of <keyword id="499327" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="youngistaan">Youngistaan</keyword>, starring <keyword id="37379" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jackky-Bhagnani">Jackky Bhagnani</keyword>, <keyword id="21114" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Neha-Sharma">Neha Sharma</keyword> and the late <keyword id="27989" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Farooque-Sheikh">Farooque Sheikh</keyword>. The other two releases on Friday the 28th included <keyword id="2179863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Underworld-action-flick">underworld action flick</keyword> <keyword id="2025912" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dishkiyaoon">Dishkiyaoon</keyword> and the comedy movie <keyword id="1669247" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="O-Teri">O Teri</keyword>. Although the themes and the genres vary widely, there’s one thing in common about these Bollywood flicks – all three had a <keyword id="2179866" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Poor-opening-day">poor opening day</keyword> at home, with low occupancies ranging from 5-10%. And the <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword> numbers did not look up even after Day 5. 
 Directed by debutant <keyword id="2071198" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Syed-Ahmad-Afzal">Syed Ahmad Afzal</keyword>, Youngistaan is still the best as far as content and <keyword id="1996031" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Box-office-performance">box office performance</keyword> go. The movie netted Rs 3.79 crore at the <keyword id="827271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Box-Office">domestic box office</keyword> during the opening weekend while Dishkiyaoon netted Rs 3.45 crore in the first three days and O Teri just managed to nett Rs 2.45 crore, according to trade figures. 
 
Youngistaan, however, saw a sharp fall in revenues on the crucial Day 4 (Monday, March 31), netting around Rs 75 lakh, while Day 5 (April 1) collections were estimated to be a little over Rs 50 lakh, according to some industry sources. Going by the current trend, the movie may turn out to be a huge flop as it has been made on a budget of Rs 22-23 crore and opened across 1,000 theatres in India. 
 
The storyline of Youngistaan is intriguing enough, though. Here, you have a young <keyword id="1043723" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Game-developer">game developer</keyword> <keyword id="2179870" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Abhimanyu-Kaul">Abhimanyu Kaul</keyword> (Jackky Bhagnani) living in <keyword id="6355311" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Japan">Japan</keyword> with his girlfriend <keyword id="2179850" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anwita-Chauhan">Anwita Chauhan</keyword> (Neha Sharma). But things turn topsy-turvy when Dad <keyword id="2179873" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dashrath-Kaul">Dashrath Kaul</keyword> (he is also the <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">prime minister</keyword> of India) suddenly dies and Abhimanyu is forced to step into his shoes. The rest could have been mayhem, but the <keyword id="2179851" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="young-PM">young PM</keyword> seems to be handling it all (except his love life) with incredible efficiency. We do believe that is the weakest part of the movie – the incredible ease of things. However, one can’t help admiring Farooque Sheikh who handholds the <keyword id="2179854" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="novice-politician">novice politician</keyword> throughout the twists and turns. It is definitely worth a watch but tends to get too predictable at the end. As Shubha Shetty-Saha of Mid-Day says, “While the film has a very interesting premise, it is totally diluted by lazy scriptwriting and sketchy direction.” 
 
 
 
As for Dishkiyaoon, starring the likes of <keyword id="9271" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sunny-Deol">Sunny Deol</keyword>, <keyword id="13128" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Harman-Baweja">Harman Baweja</keyword> and newcomer <keyword id="322563" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ayesha-Khanna">Ayesha Khanna</keyword>, the first Monday collections were equally dismal and stood in the range of Rs 70 lakh, according to Koimoi (Day 5 collections are not available yet). Directed by Sanamjit Singh Talwar, this one was made on an all-inclusive budget of Rs 35 crore and released across 1,500 screens all over India. Interestingly, <keyword id="6358615" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shilpa-Shetty">Shilpa Shetty</keyword> Kundra and <keyword id="217320" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sunil-Lulla">Sunil Lulla</keyword> are the producers here but in spite of the big names all around, the action flick has failed to gain much traction. And not without reasons. The movie could have portrayed the rise of the young aspirant, <keyword id="2179853" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Viki-Kartoos">Viki Kartoos</keyword> (Harman Baweja), to ‘gangsterhood’ with a lot more depth and understanding. Instead, we simply get some stereotype script, some superb action scenes and nothing more. 
 
Finally, there is the Umesh ​B​isht-directed comedy flick O Teri, narrated by <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword>. This one, too, has opened across 1,000 screens, but totally fails to impress (weekday numbers are yet to come in). Here are two <keyword id="69943" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="TV-journalists">TV journalists</keyword> – <keyword id="2179878" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Prantabh-Pratab">Prantabh Pratab</keyword> or <keyword id="2179879" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="P-P-">P.P.</keyword> (<keyword id="76825" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pulkit-Samrat">Pulkit Samrat</keyword>) and <keyword id="2179849" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anand-Ishwaram-Devdutt-Subramanium">Anand Ishwaram Devdutt Subramanium</keyword> or <keyword id="19472" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="aids">AIDS</keyword> (<keyword id="946726" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bilal-Amrohi">Bilal Amrohi</keyword>) – trying to unravel a <keyword id="41357" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Scam">scam</keyword> and going through many improbable adventures in the process. In a way, it would remind you of the dark, corrupt world of Youngistaan and Dishkiyaoon, but all three flicks fail to deliver the ruthless reality on paper. And consequently, they fail miserable at the box office.

Box Office: Youngistaan Falls Flat;

A total of four movies hit the theatres last week and all failed miserably at the <keyword id="827271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Box-Office">domestic box office</keyword>, not only because The Amazing <keyword id="88398" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Spider-Man">Spider-Man</keyword> 2 has stolen the show in India but also because they (at least three of them including <keyword id="554325" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Purani-Jeans">Purani Jeans</keyword>, <keyword id="2221582" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kahin-Hai-Mera-Pyaar">Kahin Hai Mera Pyaar</keyword> and <keyword id="721837" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="angry-young-man">Angry Young Man</keyword>) have come loaded with common clichés that no longer attract the new-gen audience. The lone exception is <keyword id="1048837" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kya-Dilli-Kya-Lahore">Kya Dilli Kya Lahore</keyword>, starring <keyword id="31515" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vijay-Raaz">Vijay Raaz</keyword> (he is also the <keyword id="303" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Director">director</keyword>) and <keyword id="422342" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Manu-Rishi">Manu Rishi</keyword> and offering an altogether different take on the trouble-torn <keyword id="2228533" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indo-Pak-relationship">Indo-Pak relationship</keyword>. 
 
<keyword id="2223189" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="KDKL">KDKL</keyword> is an offbeat <keyword id="829894" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood-flick">Bollywood flick</keyword> that dates back to 1948 and narrates the cross-border realities experienced by two ‘uprooted’ soldiers – <keyword id="2228536" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rehmat-Ali">Rehmat Ali</keyword> (<keyword id="6363210" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Raaz">Raaz</keyword>) and <keyword id="2228527" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samarth-Pratap">Samarth Pratap</keyword> (Rishi). Both are forced to leave their ‘original’ homeland due to <keyword id="6373578" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="partition">Partition</keyword> and compelled to live a life of bloodshed, bullets and the occasional enemy banter taking place across the border. Narrated &amp; presented by writer/lyricist <keyword id="7470" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="GUlzar">Gulzar</keyword> and garbed in dark humour, Kya Dilli Kya Lahore unfolds how ‘political’ issues impact real life as we relive the nostalgia, the helplessness and the pathos of it all. Although a commendable movie by the <keyword id="193380" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Debutant-director">debutant director</keyword>, it fared poorly at the domestic box office and fetched an abysmal Rs 7-8 lakh on the debut day (May 2). As per industry estimates, KDKL netted around Rs 35-40 lakh after the first three days while the budget (cost and P&amp;A) has reportedly stood at Rs 5.5 crore. The movie hit about 250 screens at home but suffered terribly from poor promotion and near-zero pre-release buzz. 
 But then, <keyword id="6356809" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="producer">producer</keyword> <keyword id="476576" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Karan-Arora">Karan Arora</keyword> has told the media he is “not worried about the commercial viability” of the film and is content to know that he made “an honest film.” Film critic Shubhra Gupta sums it up well. “There’s something about the film that reminds you of the Bosnian Oscar winner <keyword id="1477726" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="No-Mans-Land">No Man’s Land</keyword>, a poignant reminder of the futility of war and the tragic waste of human lives. Kya Dilli Kya Lahore had the potential to be as powerful, maybe more, because it is our story… but single-tone. And that’s because the plot is so thin. This film could have been more.” 
 
 
 <keyword id="202523" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="debutante-director">Debutante director</keyword> <keyword id="2218584" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Tanushri-Chattrji-Bassu">Tanushri Chattrji Bassu</keyword>’s coming-of-age bromance Purani Jeans did a little better at the box office, netting a little over Rs 1 crore in the debut week against a budget of Rs 11 crore. It’s the age-old story of two <keyword id="343" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Friends">friends</keyword> falling for the same girl – the staid <keyword id="1594" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Siddharth">Siddharth</keyword> (<keyword id="582705" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tanuj-Virwani">Tanuj Virwani</keyword>) from a poor background, the rich and spoilt brat <keyword id="23466" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sam">Sam</keyword> (<keyword id="1249127" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aditya-Seal">Aditya Seal</keyword>) and the trophy girlfriend, <keyword id="59965" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nayantara">Nayantara</keyword> (Brazilian <keyword id="334231" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="model-turned-actress">model-turned actress</keyword> <keyword id="1701426" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Izabelle-Leite">Izabelle Leite</keyword>). What follows is a youth-focused but totally cliché script that depicts every possible human emotion without much cohesiveness and one can hardly relate to the ‘growth pangs’ we all face during those wonder years. 
 Directed by <keyword id="2228541" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mahesh-Vaijnath-Doijode">Mahesh Vaijnath Doijode</keyword>, Kahin Hai Mera Pyar is all about an artist’s quest to find his dream girl, with loads of traditional <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> trappings weighing it down. <keyword id="766838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Abhishek-Sethiya">Abhishek Sethiya</keyword> and <keyword id="1049937" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sonia-Mann">Sonia Mann</keyword> don’t sizzle on-screen and the improbable storyline of this musical romance seems far removed from the reality. Although veteran <keyword id="297" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jackie-Shroff">Jackie Shroff</keyword> shines, the rest looks totally bleak (yes, even the VFX is bad) and its bleak performance is amply reflected at the domestic box office. Even after four days, the official numbers are not available although industry insiders have already written it off. Ramesh Rout-directed Angry Young Man also suffers the same fate. Starring Ajay Sinh Rathod (Arjun) and <keyword id="2110776" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Prachi-Sinha">Prachi Sinha</keyword> (Sarah), this action movie reeks of <keyword id="26778" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="underworld">underworld</keyword>, revenge, love and benevolence – all rehashed from earlier Bollywood flicks of the same genre. The outcome is another flop and even here, the numbers are missing till date. So wait and watch for the next lot of movies to hit the theatres – those may just be able to break the Black Friday jinx plaguing the box office like never before.

Box Office Debacle Doesn’t Let Up; Kya
Dilli Kya Lahore Is A Must-watch

Don't expect that to change this weekend with Lionsgate's "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1418377/" target="_blank">I, Frankenstein</a>" starring Aaron Eckhart as the monster. 
Reviews are only trickling in now since reviews were held until this morning - always a bad sign for a film - and, as expected, they're pretty awful. 
Currently, the film is sitting at <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/i_frankenstein/" target="_blank">0% on Rotten Tomatoes</a>.

This is the second film of the year to bring in awful reviews after recent releases "<a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_legend_of_hercules/">The Legend of Hercules</a>" and "<a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/devils_due/">Devil's Due</a>." 
Personally, I never really understood what this film was trying to do. Yes, it's telling the story of Frankenstein, but this film is based on a <a href="http://ifrankenstein.thecomicseries.com/" target="_blank">graphic novel</a> which finds the monster caught in a war between gargoyles and demons fighting over him. (What?)

Something else that will hurt this movie at the box office is the "I" in the title. It seems pretty unnecessary. 
Everyone I've spoken to about the movie has agreed it reminds them of another similarly titled movie, "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0343818/" target="_blank">I, Robot</a>" and for that reason it's become a turnoff - not because "I, Robot" wasn't an enjoyable Will Smith movie, but because it feels like "Frankenstein" borrowed from a title that's already been done years ago and is trying to replicate its success. 
The film cost an estimated <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=ifrankenstein.htm" target="_blank">$65 million</a> to make and is expected to bring in figures in the <a href="http://www.boxoffice.com/statistics/movies/i-frankenstein-2012" target="_blank">mid-teens </a>opening weekend with <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3775&amp;p=.htm" target="_blank">comparisons</a> to the "<a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/search/?q=underworld" target="_blank">Underworld</a>" franchise starring Kate Beckinsale. 
Here's what critics are saying:
<a href="http://variety.com/2014/film/reviews/film-review-i-frankenstein-1201069132/" target="_blank">Variety</a> says the movie is pretty dull. 
"Utterly witless, listless, sparkless and senseless, this supernatural actioner makes one long for the comparative sophistication of the conceptually identical 'Underworld' franchise (with which it shares producers and a writer)." 
"... the film never attempts to explore, exploit, or elaborate on Adam's origins in the Frankenstein story, to the extent that it's easy to occasionally forget the film's entire premise while watching it."
<a href="http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/i-frankenstein-2014" target="_blank">RogerEbert.com </a>notes that Eckhart's Two-Face in "The Dark Knight" looked more grim.
"This particular envisioning of Frankenstein's monster might just as well be called Scarface, for a cut-up visage, and, for the 18th-Century-set intro, some Seattle-grunge-rocker hair, are all that disguise Eckhart's fratinee-idol good looks here."
The <a href="http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/i-frankenstein-2014" target="_blank">effects aren't great either</a>.
"All this and elaborately mediocre production design, oodles of mediocre CGI-action scenes, and, in the version I personally paid about 20 dollars to see, really uninspired 3D."
<a href="http://www.villagevoice.com/2014-01-22/film/i-frankenstein/">The Village Voice</a>: 
"Noisy and repetitive dullness, its many confounding plot developments and character motivations, or its tossing out the philosophical complexity of Shelley's novel in favor of <a href="http://www.villagevoice.com/related/to/Underworld+(Movie)/">Underworld</a>-style good-versus-evil claptrap. It's not good enough, but it is slightly better than it has to be."
Still, <a href="http://www.cinemablend.com/reviews/I-Frankenstein-6715.html">Cinemablend</a> offers that at least Eckhart is enjoyable - at times - to watch on screen and is better than "Hercules" (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-legend-of-hercules-reviews-2014-1">which isn't saying much</a>): 
"To his credit, Eckhart digs into the role with a surly bravado, sneering behind the prosthetic scars and deftly wielding scowls as well as the dual-fisted weapons Adam picks up. In action sequences, he's pretty awesome, barreling forth with an effusive rage that punctuates his intimidating physicality. But aside from brawling and brooding, Eckhart is given little else to do."

"There's very little left of Mary Shelley's 19th-century morality tale in this video game-like version, clearly geared to the fan-boy/fan-girl set."
"By going to the unusual length of insisting reviewers hold opinions until 9 a.m. opening day, clearly the movie studio behind I, Frankenstein sees this as a "critic-proof" effort that will easily separate genre lovers from their premium ticket money (it's in IMAX and 3D) no matter what the reaction to the movie may be."
If you are looking for something to see this weekend, check out one of the Oscar-nominated flicks like "Her," "Nebraska," or "Philomena" that you probably haven't seen.

Reviews For This Weekend's 'I Frankenstein' Are Terrible

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>"Black Mass" plays&#xa0;like a really good&#xa0;cover of a classic.The film isn't trying to be anything more than another entry in the gangster crime canon, a drug&#xa0;lord biopic at that, and it succeeds.&#xa0;<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>The film tells the story of infamous Boston criminal James "Whitey" Bulger.&#xa0;Johnny Depp, in his best role in years, is&#xa0;the head of the Irish-American Winter Hill Gang that rose to Boston underworld dominance from 1975 to 1995&#xa0;by leveraging a&#xa0;long-term&#xa0;"alliance" with the&#xa0;FBI to further dominate territory and take the action&#xa0;beyond&#xa0;state lines.It's a&#xa0;familiar story with all its executions, double-crossing, and deep-seeded corruption, but&#xa0;is livened up by a fantastic&#xa0;ensemble cast and a script that isn't too concerned with abiding by conventions.&#xa0;"Black Mass" is a performance movie through and through.&#xa0;While Depp's exaggerated transformation into the character reeks of&#xa0;a make-up-and-wig performance on surface level, there's more to it than that. While it can't escape comparisons "The Departed" or [insert any other gangster film here],&#xa0;it never falls victim to the "biopic problem" of trying to cram too much of&#xa0;<a href="http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2011/06/23/whitey_bulger_surrenders_in_calif_after_16_years_on_run/">Bulger's rise-and-fall</a>&#xa0;into the story.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Its&#xa0;composition, while seemingly haphazard, streamlines the important details so you never truly feel its 2-hour running time.Still, it's far from perfect.&#xa0;The flashback structure - a cheap and overused narrative device - gives the filmmakers some breathing room, but also compromises the flow of the narrative. Johnny Depp is chillingly good as Boston crime lord 'Whitey' Bulger

We're into the second week of March, and only one film, Universal's "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=main&amp;id=identitythief.htm">Identity Thief</a>," has managed to have both an opening weekend over $30 million and reach the $100 million mark at theaters. 
At this same point last year, three films ("<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&amp;id=safehouse.htm">Safe House</a>," "The Vow," and "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=intl&amp;view=byweekend&amp;id=journey2.htm">Journey 2: The Mysterious Island</a>") surpassed that milestone. Meanwhile, last year's highest-opening weekend was taken by Dr. Seuss film "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&amp;id=lorax.htm">The Lorax</a>" earning a hefty $70 million upon debut.
What's going on this year? 
For one thing, there have been far too many adult <keyword id="406" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Movies">movies</keyword> in theaters. Since January, there have been <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/document/5138d2756bb3f7a551000015/r-rated%20movies%202013.pdf" target="_blank">14 R-rated films</a> limiting the younger audience going out to theaters.
8 of the 14 have had disastrous opening weekends all under $10 million.
The lowest opening grosses of the year so far included Sylvester Stallone's "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=bullettothehead.htm">Bullet to the Head</a>," which brought in $4.5 million, star-stuffed "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=movie43.htm">Movie 43</a>" with $4.8 million, and Jason Statham's latest action thriller "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=parker.htm">Parker</a>" earning $7 million.
Even "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=hanselandgretelwitchhunters.htm">Hansel &amp; Gretel: Witch Hunters</a>," a film with "Avengers" star Jeremy Renner which is based off a childhood tale and had the appeal to draw younger teens, was rated R. The film has fared better, grossing <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=hanselandgretelwitchhunters.htm" target="_blank">$181 million worldwide</a>.
Last year, by the same time, there were nine R-rated films in theaters including "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&amp;id=safehouse.htm">Safe House</a>" with Denzel Washington which earned more than $100 million after a month in theaters. Another three of those films, "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=projectx2011.htm">Project X</a>," "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=underworld4.htm">Underworld Awakening</a>," and "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=devilinside.htm">The Devil Inside</a>," went on to earn more than $100 million worldwide. 
One of the latest R-rated flicks to hit theaters, "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=21andover.htm" target="_blank">21 and Over</a>" was expected to piggyback off the success of last year's low-budget "Project X," but fell flat at theaters opening week with $8.8 million.
There were also more kid and family-friendly films last year. "The Secret World of Arrietty," "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," "The Lorax," and "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" in 3D all debuted early 2012. Plus, Martin Scorsese's Oscar picture, "Hugo," was still in theaters.

Meanwhile, "Wreck-It Ralph" and a 3D return of <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=monstersinc3d.htm" target="_blank">"Monsters Inc.</a>" from Disney are still playing in theaters from late last year. 
However, the box-office slump could boil down to something much simpler: the movies just aren't that good.
Warner Bros. executive vice president of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein told <a href="https://www.thewrap.com/movies/article/will-pricey-oz-stay-track-after-jack-got-whacked-box-office-80011?page=0,1">TheWrap</a> the films aren't living up to the hype. 
"There's no mystery as to why the box office is down," Goldstein said. "It's the movies. They just haven't done it for audiences, but that's the saving grace, too. A couple of hits and things will be back on track."
This weekend, $200 million budget <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/oz-the-great-and-powerful-could-be-disneys-next-john-carter-2013-3" target="_blank">"Oz the Great and the Powerful" hits theaters</a>, hoping to turn the box office around.
