India has become a hub from <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> and is operating many markets from the country. The cab aggregator is expanding in South Asian nations such as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, etc from India itself.<br />

Uber India head Amit Jain is now the South Asia President who said the company would expand in multiple cities across the region.<br />
<br />
The rider and driver support for these regions are being handled by an office in Hyderabad and as far as innovation is concerned, it is being done at an engineering centre in Bengaluru.<br />
<br />
Uber launched its operations in Dhaka with the cash payments feature that was started for the first time in India.<br />
<br />
"We are also building a product and engineering team in Bengaluru which will over the next six months or so go to a size of 100 people. We have opened up a big support facility in Hyderabad, with around 350-400 people. The team in the country has grown significantly from 100 people 12 months ago to 800 people now,” Jain told ET.<br />
<br />
"We continue to be a big proponent of private ride sharing and we are talking to the central government on how can we adopt regulations for more and more private car ride sharing, how can we use our technology, because that is the true solution for some of the traffic congestion and pollution issues,” he said.<br />
<br />
Jain said in the coming years, Uber is likely to expand only in a "handful, of Indian cities and will continue to "experiment, with different models.

Uber has made India a hub as it scouts for markets in South Asia

New Delhi, Dec 23 () Mumbai may be popular as the city that never sleeps, but Surat and Ahmedabad seem to be equally awake in wee hours of morning, taking most cab rides between 2-5 AM, according to Uber's annual review.
<p> Pune and Kochi also featured in the top 5 cities in India in 2019 that saw the highest percentage of trips between 2 AM and 5 AM.
</p><p> The US-based company said Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai were the top 5 Indian cities, accounting for the highest number of Uber rides in 2019.
</p><p> These cities also topped the tally of riders taking UberPOOL (shared) rides this year.
</p><p> Interestingly, Uber recorded the highest number of rides on its platform this year in India on December 7 and 6. 
</p><p> While the company did not provide any reasoning, it said Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai accounted for the highest share of these rides.
</p><p> Delhi, it said, led by a significant margin, and the rest of the four were close to each other.
</p><p> These four cities were also the top 5 cities in India with the highest number of Uber rides by international travellers in 2019, as per the data.
</p><p> London, San Francisco, Doha, Dhaka and Toronto were the five leading cities with the highest number of rides this year by India-registered users.

<br /> This will also support <keyword id="4082512" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ubers-operations-in-South-Asia">Uber's operations in South Asia</keyword> since the company is developing India as a regional hub of sorts for the region. The new centre could be used for providing both rider and driver support, apart from developing custom solutions for India and the adjoining markets, according to officials privy to the development.<br />
<br /> Other than that, <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> is also expanding its centre in Hyderabad, which was so far only providing support services, and is currently on the lookout for engineering talent. The new centre will be Uber's third in India, which is also its third-largest market. While Hyderabad provides all kind of support to riders as well as drivers, the existing <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> centre will be the company's engineering hub.<br />

"While we can't comment on specific expansion plans, we can confirm that we will continue to invest here as we see tremendous potential for the future of ride-sharing,” a spokesperson for the company told ET.<br />
<br /> Uber has already committed $1billion in India and the firm's cofounder <keyword id="1739133" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Travis-Kalanick">Travis Kalanick</keyword>, during his visit to the country last January, had said that the company would double its pledged investment if it sees more than five times the return. After Uber sold off its China operations to Didi Chuxing earlier this year, it has further accelerated its efforts in India.<br />

In the past one year, the company has rolled out several features that are specific to India such as cash payments, dial an Uber and call centre support for drivers.<br />

The company announced today, that it has hired a local team and "driver-partners" in the city. This is the second city Ola is covering in Australia, having launched in Perth earlier. According to the company, it already has 7000 registrations in that city.<br /><br />The homegrown ride hailing company began its global expansion after receiving investment from China's Didi Chuxing. Ola also has investments from Japanese Softbank, which owns over 30% stake in the company. As it begins expanding to other countries, Ola is still battling Uber as its main competitors. The American ride hailing company is present in 23 cities in Australia and New Zealand and serves many more countries as well. While Australia is the first country Ola is serving after India, the company has also set up teams in Colombo and Dhaka, though it's yet to start services there.<br /><br />Furthermore, Bhavish Aggarwal, CEO of Ola, had <a href="http://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/ola-plans-to-go-down-under-eyes-australia-and-new-zealand-for-expansion-118010901351_1.html" data-type="tilCustomLink">met</a> <keyword id="6354968" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="London">London</keyword> Mayor Sadiq Khan, during his India visit in December. Starting business in London may be difficult though, given the issues Uber has already been facing there. If Ola is able to establish its service there, it might be a big boost for the company's overseas plans.<br />

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty Images</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Investing in startups is like bird watching, or at least that's the famous quote from legendary venture capitalist <a href="https://www.sequoiacap.com/us/michael-moritz/info">Mike Moritz</a>.</p><p>Over the past two weeks, I have listened to 146 startups pitch in rapid-fire succession at demo days for Y Combinator and 500 Startups.</p><p>Of those startups, likely five to six will emerge as the next Airbnb, Dropbox, or Reddit. The founders of the next billion-dollar startup have probably run through <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/airbnb-a-13-billion-dollar-startups-first-ever-pitch-deck-2011-9?op=1">their pitch deck</a> in front of me.</p><p>The rest of the flock will disappear from the sky, selling to a bigger company, going adrift, or maybe shutting down entirely.</p><p>For venture capitalists, Moritz advises not to look at the flock, but each individual startup. "Each one is different and I try to find an interestingly complected bird in a flock rather than try to make an observation about an entire flock," Moritz <a href="http://andrewchen.co/why-i-doubted-facebook-could-build-a-billion-dollar-business-and-what-i-learned-from-being-horribly-wrong/">has said</a>.</p><p>But you can still learn a lot from watching the entire group. Here's what this batch of companies showed about the direction startups are flying:</p><ul><li><strong>Security is the new hot ticket.</strong> Start listing the companies who have been hit with a hack in the last year (Target, Sony, Ashley Madison...) and you'll quickly realize why security startups are multiplying so fast. Compared to the on-demand delivery space where every company is delivering a different product but in a similar way, the security startups are approaching the problems in incredibly wide-ranging fashions and no one has emerged as the winning standard yet.</li><li><strong>Hardware startups are growing. </strong>20 hardware startup presented at Y Combinator's Demo Day - as many as B2B this year. It's not just iterations on the smart watch, though. Startups created everything from a new shower backed by Tim Cook to a Keurig for vegetables and a sandwich making robot. Hardware has proven a success with Fitbit having the most successful IPO of the year, and startups are jumping on making anything and everything smarter (that includes your mattress cover).</li><li><strong><strong>How we hire and recruit employees is about to change dramatically.</strong></strong> Several startups are looking to upend the hiring process by making it more efficient for businesses. What does that mean for the job-seeker? You may be taking an automated test, whether you are a coder or an accountant, and interviewing with an outside company first. It's these companies that will whittle down talent, run the background check, and do the initial phone screen before the hiring company even sees the candidate.</li><li><strong>Social startups are dead.</strong> Of the 146, only two were social networks. One focused on alumni as a networking platform, the other started as a dating app for lesbians before it pivoted into a social network for women. Not a single messaging alternative, photo-sharing app, or location check-in company presented.</li><li><strong>Money is falling from trees and even small businesses want a part of it. </strong>A lot of the "tech companies" were really just profitable non-tech small businesses. One condom company that presented said it had designed a non-toxic condom that women want. But instead of explaining the technology behind the design and how its what women want, the founder pitched the margins: It costs 5 cents to make, they put 12 in a box and sell it for $15.</li><li><strong>Everyone is now an "X for Y". </strong>There's a next generation "Bloomberg for investors" and a "Bloomberg for government data." There's also a "Twitch for live coding" and a "Twitch for illustration." A comparison to an existing company is an easy way to explain a product during a three-minute pitch. If you say you are the "Uber for moving," a user is going to expect to open an app and call a moving van. It will just be hard for these companies to be that one bird that becomes a billion-dollar company when a similar bird has already emerged from the flock.</li><li><strong>Startups are looking outside Silicon Valley - way outside.</strong> Life in San Francisco can be pretty easy. Food and cars can arrive on doorsteps with a few clicks on an Apple watch. Startups, though, are finally turning their eyes to other markets and taking Silicon Valley solutions outside of the U.S. Many followed the "X for Y" model, like a "Venmo for southeast Asia," but all of the startups had different solutions for their markets. <a href="https://chaldal.com/">Chaldal</a>, the "Amazon Fresh in Bangladesh," is building micro-warehouses throughout the dense city of Dhaka to deliver groceries. Others, like <a href="https://www.redcarpetup.com/">Red Carpet</a>, are taking India's local market system and upgrading it so customers could shop online thanks to installing a point of sale system.</li><li><strong>Startups are going niche, both in their product and their market. </strong>A particular industry may be saturated, but new startups are still finding a way to try to carve out a slice. This means making their initial market smaller, but cannibalizing an untapped one (like a food delivery service on college campuses delivered by college students who know it) or focusing on one product like coffee instead of delivering all kinds of food. The hard part with a smaller niche startup will be making the kinds of returns investors expect to see, but Facebook is the example of how niche can be a good thing.
