Ride-hailing major Uber on Thursday announced a partnership with electric vehicle fleet operator Lithium Urban Technologies to deploy over 1,000 EVs in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune. Uber said it has already deployed more than 100 such electric vehicles (all sedan), such as Mahindra eVerito and Tata Tigor EV, on its platform. Over the next 12 months, the company said it remains committed to scaling up to 2,000 electric vehicles on its platform, including the Lithium EVs. "After our partnerships with Yulu, Mahindra and SUN Mobility, this is our fourth partnership in this space and Uber will always remain committed to providing smarter mobility, building greener cities and creating healthier lives," said Prabhjeet Singh, President, Uber India and South Asia said. Lithium's charging hubs in the selected cities have the capacity to charge multiple cars and buses simultaneously. While a fast charger can charge a sedan in 90 minutes, a slow charger can do that in 8 to 9 hours. "Our partnership with Uber has the potential to significantly add to the number of electric kilometers covered by cars in every city. Electric vehicles are particularly well-suited to the shared economy, and that's why we're seeing their early adoption, most noticeably in fleets," said Ashwin Mahesh, Co-Founder and CEO, Lithium Urban Technologies. According to the 2019 ‘IQAir; rankings, 14 of the 20 most polluted cities in the world are in India. Exposure to outdoor and indoor air pollution contributed to over 1.2 million deaths in India in 2017, according to the State of Global Air Report. Uber recently announced a global commitment to make all rides on its platform 100 per cent emission-free by 2040 through zero-emission vehicles and the integration of public transport and micro-mobility. A market leader in sustainable mobility solutions, Lithium was established in 2014 to encourage an environment-friendly mobility solution for corporates. Lithium runs its over 1,000 electric fleet of hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs and buses across 10 cities in India with its own charging infrastructure of more than 500 fast and slow chargers and charging hubs. Uber partners with Lithium Urban Tech to onboard 1,000 EVs in India

New Delhi, Dec 23 () Mumbai may be popular as the city that never sleeps, but Surat and Ahmedabad seem to be equally awake in wee hours of morning, taking most cab rides between 2-5 AM, according to Uber's annual review.
 Pune and Kochi also featured in the top 5 cities in India in 2019 that saw the highest percentage of trips between 2 AM and 5 AM.
 The US-based company said Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai were the top 5 Indian cities, accounting for the highest number of Uber rides in 2019.
 These cities also topped the tally of riders taking UberPOOL (shared) rides this year.
 Interestingly, Uber recorded the highest number of rides on its platform this year in India on December 7 and 6. 
 While the company did not provide any reasoning, it said Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai accounted for the highest share of these rides.
 Delhi, it said, led by a significant margin, and the rest of the four were close to each other.
 These four cities were also the top 5 cities in India with the highest number of Uber rides by international travellers in 2019, as per the data.
 London, San Francisco, Doha, Dhaka and Toronto were the five leading cities with the highest number of rides this year by India-registered users.

Mumbai, Surat, Ahmedabad top Uber India's list of 2-5 AM travellers

With this move, Uber’s India business will now report to Europe, instead of the current headquarters of the APAC region – Singapore. Faced with similar challenges, Uber pulled out of China in 2016 and Southeast Asia in 2018 and decided to focus on India. Jain had been appointed as Uber India head in 2015 and last year he went on to head the APAC business. Harford further added that Pierre will now work with the APAC teams to unlock opportunity markets such as Japan and South Korea. Uber loses its Asia Pacific head Amit Jain on its way to Wall Street

The Maharashtra government has off lately faced a lot of pressure from taxi and auto rickshaw unions for curbing Ola and Uber, the app-based taxi aggregators in Mumbai city, owing to which the government might soon take some action. 
 
The reason, some say, is that the government doesn’t want to offending such a large number of taxi and auto rickshaw drivers, looking at the political cost that it might have to pay for this later. 
 
"There are 1lakh auto rickshaw drivers in the city and about 30,000 taxi drivers, so if each driver has a family of three, then the number comes to around 5 lakh people. So you are antagonising five lakh voters during the civic elections in Mumbai and Thane," a government official told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/maharashtra-may-put-curbs-on-app-based-taxi-aggregators-ola-uber/articleshow/53409989.cms">ET</a>. "We are working on a plan where taxi and autos also operate like Uber and Ola with flexible fare structures," he added. 
 It was because of an assurance from the government that one of these unions called off a strike that was scheduled from yesterday. However, needless to say, executives from Uber and Ola were also not going to sit quietly, because of which they have sought an appointment with CM <keyword id="6355042" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Devendra-Fadnavis">Devendra Fadnavis</keyword>.

Maharashta might limit Ola and Uber operations in Mumbai

You must have by now heard about Ola and Uber planning to raise their fares. This comes as real bad news for all the commuters who had started relying heavily on Ola and Uber taxis for their daily commute, owing to their economical pricing over the exorbitant fares charged by local taxis and autos. However, it seems commute is going to be a big problem all over again. 
 
Both cab aggregators have announced they are increasing their prices in the lowest category of cabs - the bracket used mostly by the middle and upper- middle class commuters. 
 
In Delhi, where Ola was charging Rs 6 per km apart from the base fare of Rs 40 for its Micro cabs, it will now be charging almost double - Rs 12 per km after the first 20 km. 
 
Same is the case with Uber. In Delhi for instance, an UberGo commuter will now have to pay Rs 12 per km after the initial 20 km against Rs 6 per km they were paying before. 
 
In Pune, the cost has been fixed at Rs 15 per kilometre for UberGo rides beyond the first 15 km. For Vizag it’s Rs 12 per kilometre after first 15 km and for Kolkata, it is Rs 12 per km after first 10 km. 
 
Similarly the Ola commuters in Bangalore would also need to shell out Rs 12 per km as compared to Rs 6 all through the journey earlier. 
For Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, the fare scheme for Ola Micro is same as Bangalore. 
 
Both Ola and Uber have taken this move to earn profits, as per the news reports. However, this price war also poses the right opportunity for rivals like Meru Cabs to grab their share in the market. 
 
Interestingly, Meru is already giving discounts to customers. It has recently introduced Exactometer, a system where the rider needs to pay exactly the fare estimated before the start of the trip, to counter the disruptive fare rates of Ola and Uber. 
 
It remains to be seen how this steep fare hike will go down with customers, and who really will have the last laugh.
