Jain had quit as Uber’s Asia Pacific head in April. Jain was appointed as Uber India head in 2015, and went on to head its APAC business in 2018. Gore-Coty was running the company’s businesses in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. With this move, Uber’s India business will now report to Europe, instead of the current headquarters of the APAC region – Singapore. Amit Jain had started out his journey in <keyword id="2502101" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber-India">Uber India</keyword> heading the country’s operations. “After four great years, Amit Jain will be leaving Uber at the end of May to spend time with his family before taking the next step in his career. Faced with similar challenges, Uber pulled out of China in 2016 and Southeast Asia in 2018 and decided to focus on India. Jain had been appointed as Uber India head in 2015 and last year he went on to head the APAC business. Uber launched its operations in Dhaka with the cash payments feature that was started for the first time in India. 
 
"We are also building a product and engineering team in Bengaluru which will over the next six months or so go to a size of 100 people. We have opened up a big support facility in Hyderabad, with around 350-400 people. The team in the country has grown significantly from 100 people 12 months ago to 800 people now,” Jain told ET. 
 
"We continue to be a big proponent of private ride sharing and we are talking to the central government on how can we adopt regulations for more and more private car ride sharing, how can we use our technology, because that is the true solution for some of the traffic congestion and pollution issues,” he said. 
 
Jain said in the coming years, Uber is likely to expand only in a "handful, of Indian cities and will continue to "experiment, with different models.

Uber has made India a hub as it scouts for markets in South Asia

	This is the second initiative from the UBER and OXXY duo. Earlier, in March, they had joined hands to provide free rides to and from any hospital, diagnostic and path lab. And today, they have extended this partnership and announced that they will now offer free health checkups and subsidized medical rates for OXXY’s gamut of services, for all UBER driver-partners and riders in 18 cities across India.
 

	UBER users can dial OXXY 09999-000-102 or log on to www.oxxy.in to avail the service and then walk to any of the 100,000 centres including hospitals, diagnostic and pathological laboratories, spread across 1500 cities in India. The customer support team will be available 24x7. 
 Commenting on this latest development, <keyword id="30126" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Amit-Jain">Amit Jain</keyword>, president, UBER India said: “Healthcare plays a vital role in enhancing people’s lives, something UBER is dedicated and deeply committed to. Furthering our association with OXXY, I’m proud that we will now be able to provide quality and affordable healthcare to the millions of UBER driver partners and riders in the country, a problem that’s been persistent so far.” 

	Pankaj Gupta, founder OXXY, said: “A 360 degree healthcare should have been started in the country long back. Goes without saying healthcare should be transparent, convenient and affordable for all. It’s the need of the hour. We are delighted to extend this partnership to include health benefits too, with UBER, a company that cares about healthcare, as much as we do.”
 However, there is a catch: not all <keyword id="766710" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Medical-checkup">medical checkup</keyword>s would be free. As per the company press release, only the first medical checkup is free while the subsequent checkups will be highly subsidized.

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Uber">Uber</a> has pledged $1 billion investment in India over nine months and will expand its operations to new cities along with announcing new products and payment solutions. 
 
The announcement came days after its rival, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ola">Ola</a>, is expected to raise at least $500 million in India. 
 <keyword id="30126" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amit-Jain">Amit Jain</keyword>, the India president for the San Francisco-based <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=startup">startup</a>, told Economic Times Uber will establish a great support network and public-private partnerships. 
 
"Uber is currently at a $250-million run rate in India, with close to 200,000 rides a day," an industry source told the financial daily. 
 
Uber stated the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=investment">investment</a> will help the app-only company reach over 1 million trips per day in the next six to nine months and expected to support over 200,000 jobs in India by 2016. 
 
Taxi-hailing app Uber was launched in India in 2013 from Bengaluru and presently is available in 18 cities. 
 
Meanwhile, Uber's Asia head for business, Eric Alexander, told ET last year that the company was ready to invest $500 million in India over the next few years. 
 
In China too, Uber is expected to invest $1 billion in 2015 to expand operations. 
 
It is noteworthy <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=taxi+apps">Taxi apps</a> such as Uber and Ola are rapidly changing the industry without owning a fleet of their own but using technology to provide cabs on demand. 
 
Meanwhile, in the past three months, Uber has rapidly adapted itself to the Indian market. 
 
It is venturing with Telangana government to identify and train more than 2,000 drivers by the end of 2016 who will then drive on the Uber platform. The company, which plans to invest up to $50 million in the southern state, has set up its customer care facility in Hyderabad. 
 
Uber also started partnering with autos in Delhi and is rolling out cash payment options for customers in six cities. 
 
On the other hand, Ola is focussing on increasing presence in smaller towns and cities.

This new feature is launched in over 20 cities and users can book rides up to 30 days in advance. 
 
"A top-requested service from riders around the world, especially from business travelers...Riders can schedule an uberX or an uberGO for as little as 15 minutes to as many as 30 days in advance," stated Uber. 
 
Users can cancel anytime before their ride is on the way, it added. 
 Amit Jain, President for <keyword id="2502101" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber-India">Uber India</keyword>, said the offering minimises idle time for its driver-partners.

Uber will be further investing in low-cost riding options like carpooling, bike taxis and auto rickshaw services so that he can appeal to a larger section of the society. "We want to make transportation available for everyone and cabs may not always be the most affordable option for all segments," said Amit Jain, VP, Uber India, about its decision to launch bikes and ricks for its customers. 
 In reply of this, Ola has come up with cheapest taxi-hailing service, called <keyword id="3291107" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ola-Micro">Ola Micro</keyword>, which provides smaller hatchbacks at minimum prices. "(It) will be the most pocket friendly mode of intra-city cab travel," said Pranay Jivrajka, Chief Operating Officer at Ola. 
 
One area where these companies are constantly facing regulatory pressure is surge pricing, their commonly used tool where cost of a cab ride increases during peak hours. It was only last week that the Karnataka state government declared that surge pricing for app-based ride-hailing services would not be allowed. 
 
This has happened because surge pricing makes the fare and other charges higher than the fare fixed by the government, which is against the rules. 
 
The competition has intensified also because of the demand for taxis going down, forcing the taxi app companies to increase the customer base for other products. "In order to tap customers who use public transport, there is a need to give economical and faster option for shorter distances," Jaspal Singh, founder of transportation consulting firm Valoriser Consultants, told ET.
