“Thank You America,” Prime Minister Modi said on conclusion of his last official engagement at an event organised by the US Indian Business Council (USIBC). “My visit has been very successful. From here I am going to airport directly,” Modi said. 
 India’s US Ambassador S Jaishankar and Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Nisha Desai Biswal, came to see off Modi. On Monday, US President <keyword id="15962" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Barack-Obama">Barack Obama</keyword> hosted a dinner for Modi, and on Tuesday, the two leaders met for about two hours. Vice-President <keyword id="99719" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Joe-Biden">Joe Biden</keyword> and Secretary of State John Kerry, too, hosted dinners for the Prime Minister, following which, he went to the Capitol Hill for a tea hosted in his honour by Joe Boehner, Speaker of the US House of Representatives. 
 
In total, he met more than 50 US lawmakers and three Governors, including South Carolina’s Nikki Haley.

Just after talks concluded, Modi said that there was "great convergence" between the two nations on the issue of peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific. He referred to the US as an integral part of India's Look East, Link West Policy. 
 
"It is natural for India and US to have a strategic relationship. We already have the foundation for a strong partnership and now we have to revive momentum between the two countries," Modi said. In order to bring foreign investment in India, Modi invited US defence companies to come to India. 
 
US President Barack Obama said, "We discussed international situation, security issues and Middle East violence and extremism. We discussed trade and how we can work with each other and decided to deepen our existing ties with India." 
 
"The president and I spoke about many of the reforms we are undertaking and the focus on making it easy to do business in India. I expect business and economic ties between the two countries would grow at a great pace," said India’s Prime Minister.

He went on to say, "These people are the sharpest people. They're not a little bit backwards...You know the expression, they're at the top of their game, and they use it against us. But India is very tough. Brazil is very tough....China is the toughest of all, but we were taking care of China with the tariffs." "So we're going to do a reciprocal trade. If anybody charges us 10 cents, if they charge us USD 2, if they charge us a hundred per cent, 250, we charge them the same thing. And what's going to happen? Everything's going to disappear, and we're going to end up having free trade again. And if it doesn't disappear, we're going to take in a lot of money," he said. Pathak is a social crusader for sanitation and in his address to the Indian Diaspora, Pathak said he is working to provide affordable sanitation and toilets to the masses and end the practice of manual scavenging. “The cost of one toilet ranges from USD 25 to USD 500, depending on nature of construction. Technology remains the same,” he said.

This will further bolster American presence in the burgeoning defence market of India. 
 The deal for Apache is "a hybrid one", with one contract to be signed with Boeing for the helicopter and the other with the <keyword id="48028" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="US-government">US government</keyword> for its weapons, radars and electronic warfare suites. 
 
American companies have over the last decade bagged defence contracts from India worth around USD 10 billion, including for aircraft like P-8I maritime surveillance planes, C-130J 'Super Hercules' and C-17 Globemaster-III in the transport category. 
 Prime Minister Narendra Modi will leave for the US on Wednesday to attend the <keyword id="107187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="UN-General-Assembly">UN General Assembly</keyword>. 
 
The helicopter deal had survived over 10 price extensions from the American side with the last one being for a month as desired by India. 
 
The contract will have clauses to place follow-on orders for 11 more Apaches and four extra Chinooks. 
 Both platforms, which have been in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, had beaten off competition from Russia, which had offered its <keyword id="815210" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mi-28N-Night-Hunter">Mi-28N Night Hunter</keyword> and Mi-26 heavy-lift copters. 
 
The 22 Apache AH 64D Longbow helicopters are one of the most advanced multi-role combat helicopters, featuring all-weather and night fighting features, ability to track upto 128 targets in less than a minute and engage with 16, besides stealth characteristics, advanced sensors and beyond visual range missiles. 
 
India will also be acquiring Hellfire missiles and rockets.

On June 22, the two leaders spent time together for more than eight hours, the official said. Biden also held a private dinner for Modi on June 21. India and the United States have never had a stronger relationship than right now, the official said post-Modi visit, it has never been deeper in the memory of the president. The official said China was a major issue of discussion between the two leaders. "In reality... it (China) is not the glue of our relationship at all, but it's one of the factors and I think we're gonna have that glue for a long time to come," the official, familiar with the discussions between the two leaders last month, said on condition of anonymity. Both India and the United States believe that China poses a major national security threat to them, the official said, noting that the Biden administration thinks New Delhi has been ahead of Washington in terms of handling Beijing. The Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Uzra Zeya had a meeting with the Dalai Lama a couple of weeks ago in New Delhi, and "the Chinese kind of went nuts about that", the official noted. "They (Indians are) in some ways were ahead of us. It is much more existential for them in terms of countering the China threat. Whether it's banning TikTok, whether it was building up mobile networks with no Chinese equipment, they've actually shown a way forward of what de-risking looks like. And that's why I think they're so critical," said the official. "At the same time, they still depend on a lot of Chinese things, just like we do. China has been a real irritant in the G-20 for them," the official noted, giving an insight into the G-20 discussions and the balancing act that India is doing to bring all stakeholders together. In India "Modi's popularity is about 80% in some polls, so is America's," the senior administration said. "That's not just reflected at the very top which is where we usually write about or hear about. It's, I think, underneath that at the government-to-government level business-to-business level. And then people to people," the official said. "Vice versa, if the bridge from India to America is a steel reinforced four-lane highway, a strong, stable bridge; I would describe in years past the bridge from America to India has been like a rope bridge with every other plank missing. Like we don't know India and Indians anywhere near the level that India and Indians know America and Americans. I think that's beginning to change," said the official, referring to a large number of high-level visits to India. There's hardly a week or two that goes by without a major US government representative being in the country. And then on the business side, it's like a steady stream of CEOs, he said, adding "some have better strategies than others, but everybody's like rushing India." "It's one of those moments where, if you rewind the clock, China 15 years ago was raising people at this pace out of poverty into the middle class. India is actually doing it a little faster than China was 15 or 20 years ago. You just look at the metrics, whether it's the number one source of student visas now, India surpassed China last year, whether it's the investment, which is a record level, and we're the number one trading partner for India for the first time. And another number of other metrics," the official said. "This is the most significant country in many ways for them and becoming one of the most. The president said one of the most consequential relationships we have. Privately he's expressed ... that this is the most important relationship that we have, at least in terms of growth and, and the future," said the official.

If the visit happens, this first meeting between PM Modi and President Trump will be a clean-sheet meeting, which would allow the two leaders to know each other better. "India must show more resolve and confidence in dealing with the US. Need to get President Trump focus on India. It should not be diffident about pursuing its interests as a country nor should it be apologetic about its interests... India needs to get into US value chains and get their companies to invest in India. There is an increasing need to work on the ground level in addition to the strategic level," the report said. The report also refers to the contribution that the Indian IT industry has done to the US economy saying, "The IT is a key sector in India-US relationship for a variety of reasons. There is a level of interdependency between the two countries. They need our market, we need their skills... Indian IT industry in US is supporting more than 400,000 jobs. While the growth in the job market in the US has been less than 2%, the growth in the IT sector has been close to 10% in the last few years. 85% Indian companies in the US have a concrete investment plan for the next five years."

Look east aims at strengthening ties with Southeast Asian countries in a bid to counter the increasing regional influence of China—strategically, militarily and economically. Renewed ties between India and Japan, amid similar ones with other SE Asian neighbours, are of significant importance; considering the heightened military manoeuvering China has been initiating of late. 
 The one key aspect of Modi’s emerging <keyword id="44266" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foreign-policy">foreign policy</keyword> approach is clear: re-establish close relationships with Asian neighbours to position India as a strong regional power, and leverage it to counter China’s burgeoning regional influence and economic/military acumen. 
 
In fact, during his Japan visit he took the ‘look east’ policy a step ahead, turning it into ‘act Asia’ policy (as Sushma Swaraj put it recently) by trying to convert rhetoric into actionable steps. Aggressively marketing the ‘Make in India’ campaign and signing pacts leading to Japanese investments worth $35 billion over a five-year period reflected Modi’s resolve to translate foreign visits. Such visits used to be mere photo opportunities for many of his predecessors, but Modi translated it into initiatives that will enhance bilateral trade and help grow the domestic economy. 
 This was evident in his just-concluded Australia visit where he finalised Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, which is expected to boost trade between the two countries; and Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement which will enable uranium export from Australia and provide a much-needed leg-up to India's power-generation capacity. The decision to attract investment in India’s $250 billion defence sector, which will involve significant US partnership, underlined this. 
 
The fact that despite a tight schedule Modi found time to meet his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu during his US visit reiterated the fact that Modi’s Middle East policy is going to be tilted towards Israel than the Arab countries. This also means that alliance with Israel in the field of defence, which grew significantly over the last two decades, is likely to be strengthened. Russia too is going to be a key ally in the field of defence besides space exploration and energy, including nuclear power. 
 
Will Modi mend or break the strained India-Pakistan relationship is another key question. While he shared some camaraderie with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif soon after assuming power, calling off secretary level talks over Pakistani envoy’s engagement with Kashmiri separatists means Modi can be unpredictable on this front. 
 
Adding Modi’s call for deeper people-to-people alliance among BRICS countries at the recent summit in Brazil, one begins to get a glimpse of the would-be foreign policy perspective of Modi. He is mostly going to stress on closer ties with the US (Obama will visit India in January), Israel and Asian countries such as Japan and Russia(Putin will visit India next month), while positioning India as a counter-force to China and being cautious about how to go about dealing with Pakistan.
