"When the international community is going all out to fight Covid-19, the US is spreading political virus. Donald Trump offers to mediate the ‘raging’ border dispute between India and China

San Francisco/New Delhi, Taking India's example of banning more than 200 Chinese <keyword id="6354741" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apps">apps</keyword>, US President <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword> has signed a new executive order that blocks transactions with Chinese companies running eight apps, including Jack Ma-owned Ant Group's Alipay, Tencent's QQ and <keyword id="1160904" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="WeChat">WeChat</keyword> Pay <keyword id="6371395" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="applications">applications</keyword>. Transactions will be prohibited in 45 days, said the order. Other apps include CamScanner, QQ Wallet, SHAREit, Tencent QQ, VMate, WeChat Pay, and <keyword id="2763436" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="wps-office">WPS Office</keyword> -- which are already banned in India. "The US must take aggressive action against those who develop or control Chinese connected software applications to protect our national security." The Trump order said that "the continuing activity of the PRC and the CCP to steal or otherwise obtain United States persons' data makes clear that there is an intent to use bulk data collection to advance China's economic and national security agenda". On June 29 last year, the government banned 59 Chinese apps in the first lot, including TikTok, WeChat, UC Browser and Xiaomi's Mi Community, over national security concerns amid the border tussle in Eastern Ladakh which led to the death of 20 Indian soldiers in a bloody clash with Chinese PLA troops in the Galwan Valley in June 2020. Other Chinese apps in the banned list were Club Factory, SHAREit, Likee, Mi Video Call (Xiaomi), Weibo, Baidu, BIGO LIVE and more. In July, the government barred 47 Chinese apps from operating in the country, which were largely clones of the 59 apps that were banned in June. The Indian government on September 2 banned 118 apps on national security concerns, including the immensely popular PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) Mobile, Baidu and couple of virtual private networks that allowed access to TikTok that was banned earlier. Continuing with its ban orders on Chinese apps, the Indian government in November blocked 43 new mobile apps, including shopping website AliExpress owned by e-commerce behemoth Alibaba. L-1 visas are meant for executives who work for large corporations and J-1 visas are issued to research scholars, professors and other cultural and work-exchange programs. Trump will reportedly sign an executive order to suspend the visas through the end of the year, as the administration is addressing a major economic fallout, including high unemployment among Americans, amid the coronavirus pandemic. That would be Trump's latest step to restrict immigration. In April, he temporarily halted the issuance of US green cards to some foreigners. Trump, who has maintained a hardline stance on immigration and used that to appeal to his voters, has been accused of using the pandemic to promote his political agenda.

To further this cause, Apple and Google will be launching a comprehensive solution that includes application programming interfaces (APIs) and operating system-level technology to assist in enabling contact tracing, they added. Given the urgent need, the plan is to implement this solution in two steps while maintaining strong protection around users' privacy, they said. Firstly, in May, both companies will release APIs that enable inter-operability between Android and iOS devices using apps from public health authorities. These official apps will be available for users to download via their respective app stores. Secondly, in coming months, Apple and Google will work to enable a broader Bluetooth-based contact-tracing platform by building this functionality into the underlying platforms. This is a more robust solution than an API and would allow more individuals to participate, if they choose to opt in, as well as enable interaction with a broader ecosystem of apps and government health authorities, the joint statement said. Privacy, transparency and consent are of utmost importance in this effort, and we look forward to building this functionality in consultation with interested stakeholders. We will openly publish information about our work for others to analyze, it said.

"I announce to name one village in India as Trump Village," announced Pathak at a community event in Washington DC. This, he said, is part of his effort to enhance India-US relationship. The village is being developed in Rajasthan’s Mewat region. Pathak is a social crusader for sanitation and in his address to the Indian Diaspora, Pathak said he is working to provide affordable sanitation and toilets to the masses and end the practice of manual scavenging. “The cost of one toilet ranges from USD 25 to USD 500, depending on nature of construction. Technology remains the same,” he said.

According to Trump’s schedule, he will speak with Modi over phone at 1 PM <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Washington+DC&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Washington DC</a> time, which is 11:30 PM IST. 
 
This will make Modi the fifth foreign leader Trump would have spoken with over phone after being sworn-in as the US President on January 20. Earlier, on January 21, Trump spoke with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Canadian+Prime+Minister+Justin+Trudeau&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau</a> and Mexican Premier <keyword id="1325976" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pena-Nieto">Pena Nieto</keyword> and recently, he spoke with Israeli Prime Minister <keyword id="6358722" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Benjamin-Netanyahu">Benjamin Netanyahu</keyword> and the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. 
 
Trump is also keen on talking to Modi and thinks that both the countries can rise together. 
 
"We are going to have a phenomenal future together," Trump had said and praised Modi for taking India on fast track growth with series of economic reforms and reforming the bureaucracy, which he said is required in the US too. 
 
He also said that he would love to work with PM Modi. 
 
"I look forward to working with Prime Minister Modi," he had said, adding that the Indian leader is very energetic. 
 
"India is key and a key strategic ally," he had said.

"The issue of minimum wages may need congressional approval...we will not rush with a view on it. There will be an impact," said Sitharaman.

A new bill has been introduced in the US House of Representatives calling for more than doubling the minimum salary of H-1B visa holders to $130,000. The worst hit sectors will be Indian IT and pharma exporters.

1. Trump has economic interests in India. He wants to build a luxurious business tower-Trump Tower- in Mumbai. The EB-5 visa programme is likely to further gain traction in India if Trump were to follow through with his agenda of cutting federal spending while at the same time easing regulation for businesses. 
 
2. In his 15-point agenda, Trump said he will curtail Chinese trade, which is good news for India. Trump has called for higher tariffs on Chinese goods, litigation against China for stealing American trade secrets and bring trade cases against China at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to force it to cut down its trade subsidies. If all this happens, Trump fulfils his poll promises, India will make huge strides in pharma as China exports pharma products worth $20 billion to the US. 
 
3. Trump made a strong pitch against ISIS and immigration from countries that export terror and this is bound to hurt Pakistan. Trump has a plan to establish a commission on radical Islam, which will launch an ideological offensive. Trump has plans to expose networks in American society that promote radical Islam, which will greatly benefit India in terms of security. 
 
4. Trump, in his poll promises, also vowed to unleash America’s shale oil, natural gas and coal reserves to make U.S energy self-sufficient. He has plans to open onshore and offshore leasing on federal lands and lift the moratorium on coal leasing. India, which is dependent on Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) when it comes paying a price for oil, will benefit as opening up of the US oil sector will lead to price stability globally. ONGC will be able to expand operations globally. 
 
 
5. However, Trump also has soft approach towards Russia and he can revisit US policy towards China. If that happens, it would have serious security ramifications for India.

In a new research note, the firm cited a number of pressures in the economy that could buck the disinflation trend and send prices back higher."We think inflation will continue to trend lower, but there are a few potential risks on the horizon, including Federal Reserve interest rate cuts, stronger-than-expected economic growth in recent months, and policy proposals by incoming US President Donald Trump," strategists wrote, pointing to the president-elect's plan to levy <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-trump-tariffs-will-impact-prices-technology-clothes-appliances-furniture-2024-11">tariffs</a> on US imports, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tax-cut-tariff-plan-outlook-presidential-election-scenarios-harris-trump-2024-10">cut taxes</a>, and potentially lower the supply of labor by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-harris-immigration-jobs-arizona-economy-mass-deportation-employment-wages-2024-10">restricting immigration</a>."<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-tariffs-higher-inflation-fed-interest-rates-taxes-mortgage-rates-2024-11">Tariffs</a> tend to act as a one-time price increase as the costs are passed from importing companies to consumers. Immigration reform could mean higher labor costs," the note added.Trump has pushed back on the notion that his economic plan is inflationary, and said he would lower prices for Americans during his second term. He levied tariffs during his first term as president without a significant inflation surge, but experts say the tariffs Trump would impose this time around are far more wide-sweeping, explaining the difference in inflation forecasts.Meanwhile, the Fed may already be facing some resistance in its goal to get <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inflation-october-cpi-consumer-price-index-federal-reserve-interest-rates-2024-11">inflation</a> back down to 2%. Prices rose 2.6% year-per-year in October, in-line with what economists had expected, but hotter than the prior month's 2.4% increase, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics."Looking forward, though, it's worth assessing potential risks to disinflation," Schwab added.Strategists flagged four things in markets that could signal if inflationary pressures in the economy are picking up:<h2 id="41d73f46-2e9d-46d7-89ba-4c38f91b2650">1. Labor costs rising</h2>Labor costs have accelerated in recent months, with unit <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/ULCNFB">labor costs</a> among all workers in the business sector rising to 3.4% year-over-year in the third quarter, according to Federal Reserve data.<div type="image" title="Chart showing unit labor costs" height="1240" width="1420" msid="115383807" hostid="261" sizebytes="47210"></div>Higher wages are considered <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/what-causes-inflation#:~:text=When%20people%20anticipate%20higher%20inflation,as%20a%20wage%2Dprice%20spiral.">inflationary</a>, as they raise costs for businesses and could lead firms to hike prices, a dynamic known as a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/salary-negotiations-inflation-expectations-economy-2022-11">wage-price spiral</a>."It's too soon to say whether that uptrend will continue, but if labor supply is restricted and ends up putting upward pressure on wages, faster unit labor cost growth could unleash further momentum in inflation," Schwab strategists said.<h2 id="3bc506f7-2207-403b-a65c-f253e9941afb">2. The relationship between stocks and bonds</h2>Stocks typically move opposite to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/bond-yield">bond yields</a>, as higher interest rate expectations priced into the bond market would be bearish for equity prices.The rolling 120-day correlation between the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/s&amp;p_500">S&amp;P 500</a> and the yield on the benchmark <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/rates/u-s--rates-10-years">10-year US Treasury</a> has ticked into positive territory, which means stocks and yields are rising in tandem due to expectations of strong economic growth.If the correlation moves back into negative territory, that could signal greater concern over inflation in the economy, strategists said.<div type="image" title="Chart showing stock and bond yield correlation" height="1241" width="1656" msid="115383805" hostid="261" sizebytes="46810"></div>"If the correlation flips back into negative territory, though, that would be consistent with inflation (again) being the main driver of downside risk for stocks," the firm wrote. Economic momentum is building.</h2>The economy looks to be growing stronger than investors expected — another factor that could fuel inflation. However, we are assuming a slower and shallower path of rate cuts in 2025 than we did just a month ago," they continued.Expectations for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-today-fed-powell-comments-rate-cut-odds-rally-2024-11">Fed rate cuts</a> have pulled back in recent weeks as traders digest Trump's election victory and ready for a new chapter in the economic narrative. The odds that the Fed will pause its rate-cutting cycle in December rising to 42%, up from 14% odds priced in a month ago, according to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">CME FedWatch tool</a>.
