Shares of Adani Power slumped 17.79%, Ambuja Cements cracked 17.59%, ACC fell 14.54%, NDTV dropped 14.37% and Adani Wilmar declined 10%. Some of the group firms also hit their lowest trading permissible limit or lower circuit for the day. The combined market capitalisation (mcap) of all the ten listed group firms eroded by ₹2,45,016.51 crore during the morning deals. In the equity market, the BSE benchmark Sensex traded 536.89 points lower at 77,041.49 and the NSE Nifty quoted 186.75 points down at 23,331.75. US prosecutors charged Adani, 62, his nephew Sagar and other defendants for paying over $250 million in bribes between 2020 and 2024 to Indian government officials to win solar energy contracts on terms that could potentially bring in more than $2 billion in profit. This, they alleged, was concealed from the US banks and investors from whom the Adani group raised billions of dollars for the project. The complaint charges them with violating the antifraud provisions of the federal securities laws and seeks permanent injunctions, civil penalties, and officer and director bars. US law allows pursuing foreign corruption allegations if they involve certain links to American investors or markets. The Adani group did not immediately respond to requests for comments. "We made a conscious decision to make less money on all of these homes. Beazer estimated that owners of the new homes in Parkville would save about $453 a month in energy-utility costs compared with owners of older homes in town, and $311 a month compared with owners of a typical new build. Better indoor air quality is a selling point for buyers with asthma or other respiratory problems. Renewable energy and electric appliances don't emit fossil fuels."The tricky thing is when people walk in, they're not wearing a button that tells you which of those issues are relevant to them," Merrill said. "That's the discovery process. It's finding a way to connect what we've done to each buyer."He said another challenge is that home appraisals generally don't account for energy efficiency or renewable-energy technologies.Woody Fincham, a residential appraiser in Charlottesville, Virginia, who also teaches courses on sustainable homes for the Appraisal Institute, says few appraisers have the expertise. But he argued that the problem is broader. Real-estate agents need to market green features so that prospective buyers understand their value, which then has to be communicated to mortgage lenders who can seek out qualified appraisers.Still, there's no guarantee that a green home can fetch a higher price, because the market largely depends on what's sold nearby."If you're in a community where people put a lot of value on efficiency — and there are some parts of the country where they do — the appraisal will be able to show that the market is willing to pay more," Andrew Pizor, a senior attorney at the National Consumer Law Center, said. "But if you're in a community where people don't care about that kind of thing, the appraiser is going to compare prices and likely find that no one's willing to pay extra for it."Two Democrats in Congress have proposed legislation that would require appraisals to consider a home's energy use compared with that of nearby properties, as well as whether the home has energy-efficient appliances, solar panels, and EV charging. The bill would also require additional training for appraisers.But it hasn't passed, and Merrill said Beazer isn't waiting around.

And at this price level, we'll keep doing it." WTI crude is trading at $73 a barrel, down from its September high of nearly $94. That drop in prices arrives as US crude production has set fresh record highs of over 13.2 million barrels per day.But as low as prices may be, there's a limit to how much oil can be funneled into the SPR. A new study analysing long-Covid among children and teenagers in the US has found that <keyword id="44308" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="symptoms" source="Orion">symptoms</keyword> differed between the two groups. While children faced more brain and stomach-related problems, teenagers experienced fatigue, <keyword id="950054" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Physical-Pain" source="Orion">physical pain</keyword>, and loss of smell and taste. Moreover, long-Covid symptoms common in both adults and teens were more than those between teens and children, highlighting the importance of age groups-based COVID-19 research, according to the team of over 140 researchers that conducted the study. Published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), the study is part of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH)'s 'RECOVER' Initiative, aimed at understanding and preventing long-Covid, which refers to a set of persisting symptoms months after having COVID-19 <keyword id="6393040" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="infection" source="Orion">infection</keyword>. The researchers studied more than 5,300 children and adolescents, of whom about 3,860 -- - 751 children and 3109 adolescents -- had a history of the viral infection. Caregivers were surveyed for about 75 symptoms that occurred at least 90 days after an initial COVID-19 infection and lasted for at least a month. They were also enquired about their child's overall health and quality of life. Among children aged 6-11 years, the most common long <keyword id="8764262" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Covid" source="Orion">COVID</keyword> symptoms were headache (57%), followed by trouble with memory/focusing, trouble sleeping (44 %) and stomach pain (43 %), the study found. Among the adolescents, about 80% had tiredness or low energy during the day, while physical pain in the body, muscles and joints affected 60% of them. Headaches persisted in 55% of the teens, while 47% of them continued to have trouble remembering or concentrating. While identifying groups of symptoms distinct to each age group, the researchers developed a long-Covid research index that indicates the likelihood of the condition in a child or a teenager. The index, separate for both age groups, included 18 prolonged symptoms that were more common in children and 17 common among teenagers. "The symptoms that make up the research index are not the only symptoms a child may have and they're not the most severe. But they are most predictive in determining who may have long COVID," said lead author of the study Rachel Gross, an associate professor in the departments of <keyword id="492850" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paediatrics" source="Orion">Paediatrics</keyword> and Population Health at New York University. In the study group, 45% of the infected (338) and 33% of the uninfected children, along with 39% of the infected and 27 % of the uninfected adolescents reported having at least one prolonged symptom, the authors of the study said. Twenty-six symptoms among infected school-age children and 18 symptoms in infected adolescents persisted in at least 5% of the participants, they said.

United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry is slated to arrive on a five-day visit to India beginning Tuesday, days after returning from China. In India, Kerry will attend the G20 Environment and Climate Sustainability Ministers (ECSM) Meeting in Chennai to be held on July 28, the US Department of State said in a statement. In Delhi, Kerry will meet with senior government officials to advance shared objectives on renewable and clean energy, and climate, the statement read. "Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry will travel to New Delhi and Chennai, India, July 25-29, to advance shared objectives on climate and clean energy, including mutual efforts to build a platform for investments in renewable energy and storage solutions, support the deployment of zero-emission buses, and diversify clean energy supply chains," the US State Department said. The third Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG) meeting was also under India's G20 Presidency on May 21. The three-day meeting witnessed the participation of 141 delegates from G20 countries and 10 invitee countries. The representatives of 14 international and regional organisations also attended deliberations.. The three priories outlined for the ECSWG were arresting land degradation, promoting a circular economy and giving impetus to the blue economy. All meetings focused on a specific theme out of these three themes. The third ECSWG focussed on Blue Economy and was supported by two side events - Mega Beach Clean Up Event and the Ocean 20 Dialogue on Day 1 of the meeting. The primary agenda of the 3rd ECSWG meeting was the detailed discussions on the draft Ministerial Communique which entailed constructive discussions and deliberations on priority areas. The meeting ended in a discussion mode on the Communique, to be further deliberated upon and refined in the virtual meetings scheduled over the next few weeks, as a run-up to the 4th and final ECSWG meeting to be held in Chennai from July 26- 27. The fourth and final ECSWG meeting would be followed by the ECSM meeting on July 28, which John Kerry would attend. Previously, emphasising on India's climate commitments, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the country has shown leadership in climate action and achieved its non-fossil installed electric capacity target nine years in advance. In a video message to the G20 Energy Ministerial Meeting in Goa on Saturday, the Prime Minister said India now plans to achieve 50% non-fossil installed capacity by the year 2030. "No talk about the future, sustainability or growth and development can be complete without energy. It impacts development at all levels, from individuals to nations," the Prime Minister said at the meeting that brought together ministers from the countries in the G20 grouping. He pointed out that India is among the global leaders in solar and wind power and is making great efforts in green growth and energy transition. Earlier, US climate envoy John Kerry ended his four-day visit to China on July 19 without any new agreements. In fact, the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, insisted in a speech that China would pursue its goals to phase out carbon dioxide pollution at its own pace and in its own way. Still, Kerry appeared buoyed that the world's two biggest polluters had restarted discussions, which had been frozen for a year because of strained relations over Taiwan, trade and other issues. I keep in touch with a few of them and every so often, one or two of them will pop over to LA and I'll see them as they come through town.Was taking that leap of faith to leave "Downton" at the peak of the show scary for you? It's absolutely terrifying, but that's kind of what's exciting about it as well.In terms of career regrets, is there anything you regret turning down in retrospect?I think I can stand by all the choices I've made. I try not to regret too many things in my career. I think whether something is ultimately successful or not, if you've got a good reason why you sort of jumped onboard in the first place — it could be you just wanted to try something or there's a particular person you want to work with, or there's a filmmaker or an actor — there should be a reason that you can say that you are there.And what happens to that project ultimately is so out of your hands very often. When things succeed or don't succeed, you sort of roll with those punches, really. And as I say, I try and find a good reason for doing most everything, and enjoying what I do along the way.<h2>On the commotion over his MoCap suit for 'Beauty and the Beast'</h2>Clips of you <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/emma-watson-dan-stevens-beauty-and-the-beast-without-cgi-2017-5">wearing that motion capture suit on the set of "Beauty and the Beast"</a> went viral when that movie came out in 2017. How did you feel about seeing those photos out there and the reaction?I think what surprised me was that all the headlines were like, "How did Emma Watson keep a straight face opposite this?" rather than, "How the hell did Dan Stevens walk on those stilts?"I guess it's a less attractive headline, but for me, that was the story from those images, not the other way around.I mean, in retrospect, Emma had also just come off of "Harry Potter" and had been around much weirder things on set, I would imagine.Yeah, definitely. No, she was quite unfazed by all of the technical wizardry, which a lot of people might not have been.Was wearing that MoCap suit as awkward as it looked?I love that kind of thing. I love technical innovation combined with a creative storytelling, I think it's tremendously exciting and something that I'd be up for doing again.I think it's a really, really fun way to create a character and to kind feed off the energy of that whole team behind doing it the way that they did it. Every day felt like we were sort of pioneering something. At this point, would you ever consider stepping back into that role?I think "Deadpool, Wolverine, and Legion" would be a great next step. What was something you learned from working with him on set?It was incredible to get to work with him. I mean, that's a real lifelong ambition fulfilled, and he was such an incredibly sweet man and still such a lively actor. And his attitude and the energy and the sort of subtle nuances he brings, it is incredible to watch at work, and I will treasure that for a very, very long time.You've worked with so many incredible directors already on both film and TV. Is there anyone that you haven't worked with yet that you're hoping to?I'm a big fan of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-northman-robert-eggers-behind-the-scenes-stories-director-2022-4">Robert Eggers</a>. I think he's terrific. "The Witch" is one of my favorite films of recent years.And I really enjoyed "Lisa Frankenstein." I think Zelda Williams is a very exciting new voice and has a great sort of stylistic sensibility.We've talked about a few of your most memorable roles, but you've also been a Russian pop star, Charles Dickens, and King Kong's dentist, among other things. Is there a particular role of yours that you feel is underrated or that you wish had gotten more love from fans?The thing I sort of enjoy about the way that modern media is being consumed is that people discover things at the oddest times and the unlikely ones can really kind of endure and pop up. And so it's always interesting what people choose to kind of come up and say, "Hey, I loved you in X, Y, and Z," and it's always a treat when they say something that's perhaps not one of the usual two or three.And one that I particularly enjoy is when people say how much they enjoyed "High Maintenance," which was a show that I really really loved being a part of. I thought it was such an incredible family of creatives on that job and such a lovely character to get to play and just had such a lovely time making it. And that particular role has really meant something to a lot of people. It spoke to people in a particular way. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The US is set to double its capacity to export natural gas by 2028.</li><li>Natural-gas prices are now more sensitive to a volatile global market, consumer advocates say. </li></ul>For more than a decade, Americans could rely on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.eia.gov/dnav/ng/hist/rngwhhdm.htm">cheap natural-gas prices </a>to heat their homes and power businesses.That trend was jolted in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine and the US raced to send natural gas to Europe to fill a gap left by Russian energy supplies. Prices shot up exponentially, and homeowners, renters, and businesses are still seeing the ripple effects <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2023-inflation-economy-cost-of-living/?sref=qm26bHqj">on their utility bills</a> — even though natural-gas prices have since fallen.The events reflect a remarkable transformation of the US natural-gas industry, which less than a decade ago was in no position to sell to other countries. The fracking boom in the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico initially meant that the US could meet its own energy demand. But by 2016, the country was making enough of the fossil fuel to start exporting it overseas. Just six years later, the US surpassed Qatar <a target="_blank" href="https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=53159">to become the world's leading</a> exporter of natural gas.Those rising gas exports, in the form of liquified natural gas, or LNG, are facing a reevaluation based on climate threats and worries Americans will face higher prices at home. President Joe Biden last week <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/lng-exports-biden-europe-climate-russia-24a7730a3b8449273fec73824ce26001">temporarily halted approval of new</a> export terminals so the administration could assess their impact on the economy and the environment, particularly for communities that would live near those polluting terminals.The decision sparked debate over whether the US's newfound dominance as a gas exporter was good for Americans' wallets. For consumer advocates, the answer is no. Exporting more gas makes prices more sensitive to a volatile global market, they say. A cold snap in Europe or unrest in the Middle East can spike demand for natural gas — and therefore prices — and the climate crisis is only increasing the risks of disruptions due to extreme weather."All it takes is one outage, one regional storm, to have a much more disruptive price increase that otherwise wouldn't be present," Tyson Slocum, the director of Public Citizen's energy and climate program, told Business Insider.The head of global natural gas research at Goldman Sachs put it this way in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.marketplace.org/2023/07/11/buffetts-berkshire-hathaway-ramps-up-investment-in-liquefied-natural-gas/">an interview with Marketplace</a> last summer: "The US exports LNG and exports energy security to the rest of the world, but imports volatility."Slocum added that natural-gas exports put upward pressure on prices, citing recent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/aeo/IIF_LNG/">reports by the US Energy Information Administration</a> and the <a target="_blank" href="https://ferc.gov/media/report-2022-2023-winter-assessment">Federal Energy Regulatory Commission</a>.Now the US <a target="_blank" href="https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=60944">is set to nearly double</a> its natural gas export capacity by 2028, when at least five more terminals could be online. The expansion isn't impacted by the White House's pause, which only applies to terminals that haven't received federal approval yet.But ask people in the oil and gas industry, and they'll say the expansion is great for consumers.Mike Sommers, the CEO of the American Petroleum Institute, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3nMLNkSP5U">told CNBC</a> on Monday that "when we have more markets, that means there's lower prices for American consumers."An API spokesperson said that several factors affect the price US customers pay for gas. The fact that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.eia.gov/dnav/ng/hist/n3010us3m.htm">residential gas prices between 2015 and 2019 barely moved</a>, even as America shipped more overseas, shows the industry can meet global demand for gas while keeping the US well-supplied. The higher costs between 2021 and late 2023 are due to the energy crisis in Europe and "cannot explicitly be linked" with greater US gas exports, the spokesperson said.API also cited the Energy Department's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.energy.gov/sites/prod/files/2018/06/f52/Macroeconomic%20LNG%20Export%20Study%202018.pdf">most recent research in 2018</a>. The study suggested that higher exports would raise natural-gas prices for US households but those would be offset by higher stock prices and other economic benefits.Consumer advocates blasted the study as outdated and based on flawed methodology."It's hot garbage," Slocum said. "Stock ownership is concentrated among the wealthiest 1% of Americans. They don't care if their utility bill goes up. But low-income people or senior citizens on a fixed income? You better believe that they are experiencing that."

Your energy costs could become a lot more unpredictable 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Today's energy grids are unable to keep up with the intense demand being heaped upon them.</li><li>Startups are working to fix this, and investors are betting that AI and data will play a key role.</li></ul>As more cars, stoves, and heating systems are electrified, a lot of strain will be put on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-largest-federal-investment-ever-try-fix-power-grid-2023-10">decades-old grids</a> in the US and Europe.In the US, over 70% of transmission lines are over 25 years old, while about 40% of Europe's distribution grids are over 40. Faulty infrastructure can lead to blackouts, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cybersecurity-ai-mobile-app-data-protection-2024-3">vulnerability to cyberattacks</a>, or other emergencies.The power system, which was built for gas and coal, is increasingly distributed, with power generated offshore and on roofs. There aren't enough power lines to connect wind, solar, and geothermal power with households and businesses potentially miles away.The International Energy Agency has said that to meet the Paris Agreement's goal of keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels, renewable-energy capacity needs to triple by 2030 and global investment into grids needs to double, to $600 billion a year.But infrastructure projects are costly and time-consuming. Globally, energy projects struggle to overcome permitting hurdles. Projects finished in the US in 2022 are expected to take five years on average to be connected to the US grid, while projects in the UK have had to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-65500339">wait up to 15 years</a>. Like a motorway at rush hour, lines can become congested and blocked, slowing the flow of power, causing outages, and damaging infrastructure.Issues are compounded as more <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-demand-still-strong-despite-slowdown-hybrids-survey-2024-1">electric vehicles</a> and heating systems are plugged into the grid. At the same time, increased domestic manufacturing in the US is expected to cause a surge in demand for energy. Investors told Business Insider that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-war-spurs-research-into-lithium-ion-battery-alternatives-sand-2023-8">Russia's war in Ukraine</a> shined a light on energy security and price volatility.It paints a picture of a fragile system — but investors are optimistic about solutions and are backing startups positioning themselves as such. Many are betting on AI to help optimize existing infrastructure."We must leave no stone unturned, both technical and political, to address these challenges," Rajesh Swaminathan, a partner at Khosla Ventures, a US venture-capital firm, told BI.<h2>Making smart grids a reality</h2><a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/oct/11/energy-first-as-uk-successfully-transmits-data-via-national-electricity-grid">Data was transmitted</a> across a national energy grid for the first time in 2016. People in the industry hailed it as a revolution paving the way for a smarter, automated system that could tweak energy consumption to reduce strain on the grid. The idea is that by better balancing grids, providers can avoid firing up polluting energy sources during peak times or when the sun isn't shining and the wind isn't blowing.But it's only recently that grid operators were able to know how much capacity is being used in real time or how much electricity is flowing through a cable, said Andrés Dancausa, a partner at the early-stage VC fund TheVentureCity who's based in Europe.Operators could use new technology and AI to collect data on voltage, capacity, grid infrastructure, and usage to plan what energy should go where at a certain time, helping avoid congestion and blockages, Dancausa said. This is "something that couldn't happen a few years ago," he added.Swaminathan said the US grid is inefficient because it does a poor job of allocating power where and when it's needed most. "Instead of overhauling the entire grid, we can address this quickly and easily via AI-powered smart meters installed at the edge," he said, referring to smart meters at the home or at the point of consumption.<h2>The intersection of energy and AI</h2>Smart meters, which are at the core of some grid digitization strategies, can monitor voltage, grid capacity, and power quality. This data is used to prevent and manage outages and disturbances, to model future supply and demand, and to reroute power when the grid is congested. Some can also track how much energy consumers generate.The US Department of Energy has earmarked $8.4 million for grid-enhancing technologies, including smart meters.Startups selling them are hoping to alleviate pressure from physical grid infrastructure and allow operators to do more with the infrastructure they have.Dancausa pointed to his portfolio company Plexigrid, which has developed a suite of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-most-promising-artificial-intelligence-startups-of-2023-2023-8">AI software tools</a> to automatically adjust household energy consumption based on usage at a certain time. Bidgely, a startup in Swaminathan's portfolio, also uses AI to help match energy supply and demand.Investors told BI that AI could change how consumers pay for and interact with energy.Victoria McIvor, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/world-fund-investor-victoria-mcivor-first-job-in-vc-nuclear-2022-6">an advisor to energy startups</a> who was formerly an investor at the European climatetech firm World Fund, imagines a future where energy tariffs dictate when energy-intensive appliances run. "It will be a thing of the past that you put the washing machine on whenever you want," she said. "Your washing machine will turn on at some point in the day when it makes sense, and you won't think about it too much.""Things in your house will be moving in a smart way according to energy prices," she added.Some flexible tariffs and money-back programs that incentivize off-peak energy usage are emerging, such as those run by the UK's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.energylivenews.com/2023/07/19/national-grid-amazon-octopus-and-ovo-to-boost-household-energy-flexibility/">National Grid, OVO, and Octopus Energy</a>.Infrastructure providers can also use AI to monitor grids.Enline, a Portuguese startup, uses AI and digital twins, or virtual replicas of real-life assets, for predictive and real-time monitoring of grid infrastructure. The company says its technology allows customers to model and detect energy faults, reduce energy transmission loss, analyze the effects of weather events, and monitor vegetation to prevent it from coming into contact with power lines, which can <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pge-caused-california-wildfires-safety-measures-2019-10#:~:text=power%20lines%20have%20caused%20more,over%20safety%20measures%20for%20decades.">cause wildfires</a>. Overstory, a startup in Amsterdam, also uses AI and satellite data to monitor vegetation for utility companies to reduce that risk.<h2>Rolling out software and hardware in parallel</h2>VCs prefer investing in software companies that tackle big problems because they can typically scale rapidly at low costs.But Timothy Barat, the CEO and cofounder of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gridware-10-million-lowercarbon-fifty-years-electricity-wildfires-pitch-deck-2023-6">Gridware</a>, said the fear is that relying on software for the grid could lead to postponements of crucial infrastructure builds and upgrades."There can't be any delays," he said, adding that software-driven boosts wouldn't be "nearly enough" to hit climate goals in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-change-migration-where-moved-escape-natural-disasters-extreme-weather">California</a>, where he lives.AI could help make physical infrastructure builds more efficient, too.Gridware attaches sensors to transmission-line poles that assess their location 6,000 times a second. It uses <a target="_blank" href="https://techcrunch.com/2021/02/17/gridware-is-building-early-detection-sensors-for-power-grid-failures-and-wildfires/">AI and machine learning</a> to crunch the data and detect issues to help avoid outages and increase grid resilience. Barat said this, in turn, frees up more resources for building infrastructure.Generative AI, the tech that powers ChatGPT, is also being applied to the energy industry. Some startups, such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pitch-deck-verse-generative-ai-for-clean-energy-coatue-2023-7">Verse</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reel-startup-b2b-clean-energy-provider-raised-5-pitch-deck-2024-1">Reel</a>, say they're using it to help speed up contracting for projects. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pitch-deck-energy-startup-gridcog-4-million-albionvc-2024-2">Gridcog</a>, a London startup that recently raised $4.2 million from VCs, has developed a platform to model and simulate renewable-energy projects so, say, a supermarket chain can figure out which stores and warehouses are most suitable for solar.Meanwhile, the Scottish startup Continuum Industries says it has developed an AI platform that lets developers map out power-line routes and analyze infrastructure plans based on their environmental and social impact, engineering requirements, and cost.<h2>Innovating around the grid</h2>Many of these startups sell to utility companies, which can be slow and bureaucratic, investors told BI. This can get in the way of grid upgrades and hobble startup growth, as it can take a long time to secure a deal with utilities and roll out their technology.Duncan Turner, a general partner at the VC firm SOSV, described it as a difficult pitch for VCs who want to back startups that can scale quickly and widely. "Either governments and utilities are going to figure out how to move quicker, or the private sector will continue to find ways to innovate around the grid," he said.Turner said his firm is eying opportunities in long-duration energy storage, such as batteries and hydrogen, to avoid dealing with grids and having to sell to utility companies. Batteries can store clean energy to be used later — when the sun isn't shining but energy demand is high — and can be sold directly to consumers with their own solar panels.McIvor said grids used to be relatively simple networks. But today's systems have sprawling distributed infrastructure with renewable energy and energy storage systems, where power is purchased at cheaper rates and deployed when it would be traditionally more expensive. This makes them "infinitely more complex," McIvor said.Software, she added, is at the heart of making sure it works well.
