The <keyword id="6355999" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ai" source="Orion">AI</keyword> classifiers trained on audio recordings cannot accurately predict whether someone has Covid-19 by analysing the sound of their coughs, according to the study led by the UK's <keyword id="7138111" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="alan-turing-institute" source="Orion">Alan Turing Institute</keyword>. As first reported in a paper from researchers led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, there were claims that AI could detect the difference in cough sounds between those with and without Covid-19 with up to 98.5 per cent accuracy, reports The Register. The result led to efforts to build an app powered by the algorithms to provide people with a cheap and easy method to test for the novel coronavirus. The Department of Health and Social Care in the UK even went so far as to award Fujitsu two contracts totalling more than 1,00,000 pounds to develop the government's so-called "Cough In A Box" initiative in 2021, according to the report. The software would collect audio recordings of coughs from users to analyse on its Covid-19 app. Researchers from The Alan Turing Institute and Royal Statistical Society, commissioned by the <keyword id="11923364" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="uk-health-security-agency" source="Orion">UK Health Security Agency</keyword>, conducted an independent review of audio-based AI tech as a Covid-19 screening tool. They found that even the most accurate cough-detecting model outperformed a model based on user-reported systems and demographic data like age and gender. The researchers examined data from over 67,000 people recruited through the National Health Service's Test and Trace and REACT-1 programmes, which asked participants to send back Covid-19 nose and throat swab test results as well as recordings of them coughing, breathing, and talking. In an attempt to see whether coughs could be used as a biomarker, the researchers trained an AI model based on audio recordings and test results, said the report. "But as we continued to analyse the results, it appeared that the accuracy was likely due to an effect in statistics called confounding -- where models learn other variables which correlate with the true signal, as opposed to the true signal itself," <keyword id="16540552" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kieran-baker" source="Orion">Kieran Baker</keyword>, a statistics PhD student at King's College London and research assistant at the Alan Turing Institute, was quoted as saying. The confounding was caused by the Test and Trace system's recruitment bias, which required participants to have at least one symptom in order to participate. The researchers conducted additional tests, pairing participants of similar ages and genders, with only one having Covid-19, the report mentioned. "When we evaluated these models on the matched data, the models failed to perform well, and so we conclude that our models cannot detect a Covid-19 bio-acoustic marker from this data," Baker said. AI performs poorly in detecting Covid by listening to cough says a UK-based study

And it's local governments and public colleges that are handing over the most cash.Sophos, a UK-based software security company, released its annual <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.sophos.com/en-us/content/state-of-ransomware">ransomware report</a> this week. It details a steep increase in payouts for ransomware attacks in recent years.Ransomware attacks typically come from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ransomware-attacks-corporations-children-executives-mandiant-google-cyber-security-2024-5">criminals who hack into companies to steal data</a>, which they hold <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/ransomware-payments-increase-500-in-the-last-year-finds-sophos-state-of-ransomware-report-1033305236">until the victim agrees to pay a fee</a>. The attacks leave the victims unable to access the stolen data, which can cripple the institution until the ransom is paid.Almost 60% of respondents told Sophos that ransomware attackers had targeted their organization this year. That's a slight decrease from 66% for the same period in 2023. But the companies that do fall victim to ransomware attacks are paying out more money than ever, the study found.More than 1,000 of the surveyed organizations said they paid the ransom after hackers compromised their data.IT and telecom companies reported the lowest median ransom payment at $300,000, while lower education and government agencies posted the highest with a median of $6.6 million.Professional business and financial services were the most likely to successfully reduce ransom demands through negotiation. Higher education institutions, on the other hand, were the most likely to pay more than the original demand."It may be that these industries are less able to access professional ransom negotiators to help reduce their costs," the study's authors said. "They may also have a greater need to recover the data 'at any cost' due to their public remit."Researchers say advancements in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-phishing-scams-automation-detection-2024-6">AI will likely increase the scale of ransomware attacks</a>. In April, researchers from the Institute for Security and Technology told the House Financial Services subcommittee that they have "tremendous concern" about the role AI could play in future attacks, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://thehill.com/homenews/house/4599587-ai-ransomware-easier-committee/">according to The Hill</a>.Typically, ransomware groups target large companies with revenue greater than $5 billion, but smaller organizations are starting to become more likely targets, according to the study. In the last year, organizations with less than $10 million in revenue made up about 47% of those hit by ransomware attacks, Sophos found."While many ransomware attacks are executed by sophisticated, well-funded gangs, the use of crude, cheap ransomware by lower-skilled threat actors is on the rise," Sophos says.

New Delhi [India], June 23 (ANI): The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare postponed the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Postgraduate (<keyword id="6361994" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="NEET" source="Orion">NEET</keyword> PG) Examination on Saturday, which was scheduled to be held on Sunday, and said that a fresh date will be announced at the earliest. The NEET-PG exams were scheduled to be held on June 23. "Taking into consideration, the recent incidents of allegations regarding the integrity of certain competitive examinations, the Ministry of Health has decided to undertake a thorough assessment of the robustness of the processes of the NEET-PG Entrance Examination, conducted by the National Board of Examination for medical students," the ministry statement read. "It has accordingly been decided, as a precautionary measure, to postpone the NEET-PG Entrance Examination, scheduled to be held on 23rd June, 2024. The fresh date of this examination will be notified at the earliest," the ministry added. "The Ministry of Health sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused to the students. This decision has been taken in the best interests of the students and to maintain the sanctity of the examination process," the health ministry said. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) was fully prepared to conduct the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) Post-Graduate (PG) 2024. Speaking exclusively to ANI, Dr Rakesh Sharma, OSD to President and Member, Governing Body, NBEMS said, "All eyes of the nation are on NBEMS for the conduct of NEET PG 2024 and we will not let down the hope of the nation. We will conduct the test through a computer-based test (CBT) mode throughout the country." On Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) for successfully delivering and maintaining transparency, he said, "NBEMS has robust SOPs for conducting exams because of which NBEMS has been successfully delivering the exams year after year. These SOPs are stringently followed. NBEMS has worked very hard on maintaining the secrecy of the question paper and there is no chance that there will be any leakage of the question paper." He further said that NBEMS is supported by medical colleges, faculty, MoHFW, Flying Squads, Deans and Principals, Vice-chancellor and other agencies, "NBEMS has support from various medical colleges, faculty, MoHFW and other agencies. NBEMS has already briefed the chief secretaries and DGP of all states for safe and secure conduct of the exam."
