Off lately, there have been a number of cases where <keyword id="144117" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="AADHAAR">Aadhaar</keyword> data was leaked from government websites. To prevent further such cases, the central government has put in new safeguards, under which all ministries have been directed to encrypt all Aadhaar data and personal financial details. Also, all government departments are asked to deploy one official responsible for Aadhaar data protection. Other than this, officials are also being made aware of the legal consequences of such data breach. The ministry of electronics and information technology has written to all departments, reminding them about the need of better data security. Since Aadhaar cards are now being linked to a person's bank account, the security is even more important in terms of financial risks a breach can pose to an individual. The ministries have been given a set of 27 dos and 9 don'ts, including instructions on masking Aadhaar data and bank details and encrypting data. Other than this, regular audits have also been mandated to avoid breaches.

According to a notification dated June 1, 2017, the deadline for doing this is December 31, 2017 and accounts where this is not done are to be made inoperable after this date. To comply banks are now asking customers to submit their Aadhaar to link the same with their accounts. However, even if you have submitted your Aadhaar details at your branch there is still a possibility that the linkage between the two was not done correctly by the bank or it may be that the bank has not linked Aadhaar with your account because they have misplaced your details. Here's a guide to check whether your Aadhaar has been linked with your bank account- 1. Visit the Aadhaar website - www.uidai.gov.in 2. Enter your Aadhaar number and security code. Enter the OTP and click on 'Login' 5. On successful login, the website shows whether your Aadhaar number is successfully mapped or not. Alternatively, you can also check this through your mobile. 1. On confirmation, it will show you the bank account linked with Aadhaar Points to remember 1. It will only show you the last bank account that has been linked with your Aadhaar. 2. A glitch in <keyword id="111536" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Online-tax-filing">online tax filing</keyword> system in India may land expatriates in trouble. They won’t be able to file their income tax return online in time as the software is asking for a UID, or <keyword id="144117" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="AADHAAR">Aadhaar</keyword> number. Many expats can’t file their tax returns as the process won’t be complete without an Aadhaar number. Even though the Indian government had notified that the foreign citizens are not required to obtain Aadhaar card for tax filing purpose, they are still facing issues. "In several cases, the income tax e-filing system is not allowing expatriates to upload their returns without Aadhaar as they have been tagged as Indian citizens in the income tax database," Amit Maheshwari, partner at Ashok Maheshwary &amp; Associates LLP, told ET. In some cases, expats are asked to provide their foreign bank account when that's not required as per the law. NRIs, too, "are unable to upload their tax returns when they mention their country of residence", a person told ET. Several representations on the issue have been made to the government in the last couple of weeks. In this backdrop, expats and NRIs want the government to extend the deadline for filing the returns.

Thanks to the Indian government’s new move, Indian citizens might soon be able to validate the credentials of drivers and domestic helps using their <keyword id="6356006" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aadhaar-card">Aadhaar card</keyword> numbers, before they hire them. 
 
The government is planning to widen the scope of the Aadhaar authentication system. As of now, it has been restricted to banks and a few government departments, but soon, it would be open to individuals and private companies. In doing so, all privacy concerns would be addressed by using a more secure method. 
 
In exchange of a small fee, anyone would be able to use the unique identity number and verify the details of others. This would be allowed to done online in real time, unlike many other identity documents such as voter, ration and PAN cards. This would also allow companies to authenticate the records of their consumers and staff. 
 Unique Identification Authority of India (<keyword id="6355252" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="UIDAI">UIDAI</keyword>) is looking forward to appointing third-party agencies to carry out the authentication on behalf of individuals and companies. 
 
"Various use-cases can be built using the Aadhaar authentication service, especially by startups who have been requesting for access," an official told ET on the condition of anonymity. 
 
The move has come after Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently commanding to expand the use of Aadhaar. 
 As far as privacy is concerned , the new authentication system will function differently from eKYC norms, the current norms used by government departments and banks. This allows user agencies to enter the <keyword id="485058" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aadhaar-number">Aadhaar number</keyword> and biometrics of a person after which the UIDAI server provides the name, address and other details, to be stored by the agencies. 
 
When the service will be extended to private companies and citizens, only the bar code on the Aadhaar letter will have to be scanned and the data it contains will be sent to the Aadhaar database for verification, to return either with a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’. 
 
"This will be most secure way of authentication since there will be no transfer of any citizen data through the UID database," the official said. 
As per UIDAI data, there are about 330 authentication user agencies and over 111 crore transactions have been handled since the service started. About 20 companies have so far signed up for the Aadhaar authentication service, which include telecom service providers like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and state-owned BSNL, as well as financial services firms such as MasterCard and Visa.
