Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India], July 19 (ANI): The <keyword id="6375844" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-micro" source="Orion">Ministry of Micro</keyword>, <keyword id="6375845" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="small-and-medium-enterprises" source="Orion">Small and Medium Enterprises</keyword> launched a new initiative called the 'Yashaswini' initiative under the '<keyword id="22467687" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Empower-Her-Udan" source="Orion">Empower Her Udan</keyword>' campaign on Thursday, July 18, to encourage and support women entrepreneurs across the country. Under this campaign, the first phase is set to start on Friday, July 19, in Jaipur. According to the Director of <keyword id="6358354" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MSME" source="Orion">MSME</keyword>, <keyword id="657556" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ankita-Pandey" source="Orion">Ankita Pandey</keyword>, around 600 women entrepreneurs in the state will be participating in the event, which will start at the <keyword id="14599491" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajasthan-International-Centre" source="Orion">Rajasthan International Centre</keyword> today. Pandey said that the initiative is being introduced to provide a formal education for women operating commercial enterprises, along with creating awareness among them of all the <keyword id="7776964" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MSME-schemes" source="Orion">MSME schemes</keyword> they can utilise. "The initiative is to introduce formal education for the women who operate commercial enterprises, along with creating awareness among them to utilise all the MSME schemes,' she said. Pandey further mentioned that women can register at different stalls at the centre based on the skills they require to develop to run an enterprise, including training, capacity building, how to make full use of their capital, how to get market access, how to develop their product, and also how to do digital marketing. She also mentioned that this will not be a one-day event and that workshops will be organised at local MSMEs for further development.  The scheme’s metric for measurement is the goal of reaching ₹20 crore in international ticketing by 2027. Stakeholders and feedback on the draft is open till September 4. Pros and cons of implementing UDAAN international When the original UDAN scheme rolled out, the aim was was to encourage <keyword id="44023" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="airlines">airlines</keyword> to operate out of the 398 ‘unserved’ airports in the country. These were airports that hosted no commercial flights whatsoever. The goal of the subsidy was to incentivise airlines that didn’t find it lucrative to operate out of small cities. Hence, even through UDAN international, the tourism sector in these cities could receive an impetus through faster air connectivity. That, in turn, would attract more infrastructure and investment. Subsidised airline tickets would also allow smaller regional airlines to compete on a level playing field against bigger airline carriers. The issue lies in the fact that, at the end of the day, subsidies are a burden on the government. Coupled with the fact that global oil prices will probably increase due to the strain on the global supply of crude oil as a result of the Iran sanctions, the burden starts to get especially heavy. Not to mention that Iran is one of India’s biggest suppliers of crude oil. Second, one of the negative externalities of the RCS was that when there’s more traffic, there’s a need for more security. The boom in demand may be good for business, but if your own security force <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/as-demand-for-air-travel-in-india-increases-so-may-the-prices/articleshow/65055589.cms">threatens</a> to leave because they haven’t been paid, it’s a problem. That being said, it’s the same boom in demand that will help India attain its goal of becoming the world’s third largest aviation market by 2020. How does it work? There are two parts to the process. The first part is where each state will identity the international routes that they need subsided, for which the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will determine the subsidy amount. And, the second part shifts the airline carriers where domestic airlines will bid on the percentage of flight capacity for which they need subsidies from the government for each route. At the end of the day, the airline that has the lowest quotes for a particular route, will get the subsidy for that passage. The financial subsidy will only be given out as per the number of seats left unsold, whatever the overall subsidy amount may be. While the AAI will be the nodal agency implementing the scheme, the subsidies will be distributed through an International Air Connectivity Fund (IACF) which will be set up using the contributions from different state governments. Developing these regional routes, in the long-term, feeds into major routes that brings growth to the aviation sector. The states of Assam and Andhra Pradesh have already proposed eight routes for the UDAN international scheme, with the former having announced Rs 100 crore as viability gap funding to promote international travel from the state.

 The key difference between RCS and UDAN international scheme is that there’s no capping of prices. That basically means that consumer benefits where subsidised prices increase the pool of demand to include the budget-sensitive middle class citizens, won’t come into the picture.

UDAN international: Does the cost justify the returns with India’s new draft scheme?

The project aims to aid communication between pilots and air traffic controllers by making it easier to understand pilots who speak English but have heavy overlaying accents. Accents are extremely diverse, especially in a country like India, which has 22 official languages and 780 languages overall. At the request of the Government of India, the program is going to analyse accents and <keyword id="1696544" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Transcribe">transcribe</keyword> them for the controllers on the ground. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been pushing for more smaller <keyword id="43661" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="airports">airports</keyword> in the country to increase connectivity. That, in turn, requires more manpower, specifically more pilots. Neelu Khatri, the president of Honeywell’s aerospace business for India, says that the move will result in more regional pilots since it’s a regional connectivity scheme. And, therein lies the problem of accents. In an interview with Bloomberg, Khatri <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-06-05/honeywell-to-make-flying-safer-by-decoding-100-accents-in-india">claims</a>, “One of the biggest problems in India has been that we Indians don’t understand each other’s English because of the dialects.” And that’s not too-far off the mark since past <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/the-indian-air-crash-tapes-point-blame-at-kazakh-pilot-1352266.html">incidences</a> have already proven that miscommunication is a global safety threat. If the software is successfully implemented in India, it may be applied worldwide to help airports in other nations.

Honeywell’s new software aims to help air traffic controllers decode Indian accents

New Delhi, Ahead of the Budget 2021, the government has hinted at rationalization of various taxes in the <keyword id="45911" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aviation-sector">aviation sector</keyword>, which is among the hardest hit by the Covid-19 induced economic meltdown. "We are working on a long-term plan to help the sector by rationalizing various taxes. We are looking forward to make the ecosystem smarter and more efficient to make the <keyword id="31907" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aviation">aviation</keyword> sector sustainable," said Usha Padhee, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation. Addressing a webinar on "Connecting the Dots-Recovery of aviation, tourism and hospitality" on Friday, she underscored the need for the sector to be geared for any challenges and said that policy rejig will also help it in the long run, if it is hit by a similar crisis in the future. The webinar was organised by Women in Aviation International - India Chapter. Highlighting the success of Udan scheme, she further added: "Though the pandemic has adversely impacted the aviation and allied sectors, yet we have managed to take steps towards recovery. We are systematically opening the air space for operations and the air bubbles have helped aviation sector to get 60% capacity of domestic sector back." She added that great solutions are borne out of crisis while delving into the fact how the industry has fast adapted to technology and transformed digitally. "The crisis has led to digital transformation for the aviation sector. Now we have 100% web check-ins and various technology driven solutions have been adopted to offer touchless experience to passengers," she quipped. Pre-Covid forecasts indicated that in 2036 aviation industry will provide 98 million jobs and generate $5.7 trillion in GDP. Post Covid, the situation has reversed completely throwing the industry in a state of flux. All commercial activities are now dependent on the recovery of aviation, tourism and hospitality industry. Various Taxes may rationalize in Aviation Sector in Budget 2021

China has successfully completed an 80-minute first flight of its indigenous passenger aircraft that it had conceived in 2008. India, on the other hand, has not moved its idea of Regional Transport Aircraft (RTA) from papers since 2007. Called C919, the Chinese plane is almost the size of the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737-800 and has the carrying capacity of 158-168 passengers. China flies ahead of India in developing indigenous plane

Though the difference is substantial, the passenger traffic at Kempegowda International Airport is up by 4 million in comparison to H1 2017. Experts <a href="https://bangaloremirror.indiatimes.com/bangalore/others/kempegowda-international-airport-among-fastest-growing-airports-in-world/articleshow/65493960.cms">attribute</a> one of the reasons to be that fact that, historically, Bengaluru hasn’t been well connected via alternative methods of transportation. That being said, in terms of percentage growth the airport came in eighth globally. Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Airport came in sixth with actual passenger growth of 3 million. Growth is always considered to be positive, but Delhi airport’s increasing traffic has also led an increasing security bill that the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has not been able to <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/delhi-news/govt-threatens-to-withdraw-delhi-airport-security-over-payment-dispute/story-lnEGoZHRs8ZwbouZsYNOTK.html">pay-off</a> yet. The civil aviation industry in India is already the third largest in domestic travel. According to the <a href="https://www.ibef.org/industry/indian-aviation.aspx">India Brand Equity Foundation</a>, by 2036 India will have around 480 million passengers, which will be greater than Japan and Germany combined. Year on year the passenger traffic has grown at a rate of 16.52% with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.72% between 2006 and 2018. Routesonline, a company that specialises in the quality and standards of aviation, only considered airports that crossed the 2.5 million mark in the first six months of the year. That being said, India’s aviation sector is set to grow even further if the UDAN international draft scheme is implemented to promote international air travel from smaller cities.

India’s airports are among the fastest growing in the world

The number of domestic air passengers in India is expected to double to about 300 million annually by 2030 and the country would still have a vast untapped market, Union Civil Aviation Minister <keyword id="19999763" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="jyotiraditya-scindia" source="keywords">Jyotiraditya Scindia</keyword> said on Thursday. Speaking at the inaugural session of Wings India 2024, a civil aviation conclave and exhibition here, <keyword id="19905342" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="scindia" source="keywords">Scindia</keyword> said India under the leadership of Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword> in the last decade, has been a "shining star" on the global firmament of civil aviation. He said the number of airports and waterdromes will go up to over 200 from the existing 149 in the country. With 300 million passengers a year in 2030, India's aviation penetration would be at 10-15% and still be a potential market in the decades to come. "That is the potential that India holds not only to herself and Asia, but to the world. ...even with achieving 300 million domestic passengers by 2030, we will still be one of the most under-penetrated markets across the top 20 in the world. Today our penetration is roughly about 3 to 4% that will grow to about 10 to 15%. We still have 85% penetration to go," he said. He noted that the domestic air passenger traffic witnessed 15% growth (CAGR) while international air passenger traffic was 6.1%, in the last decade. According to Scindia, India today is the third largest domestic civil aviation market in the world and the seventh largest international civil aviation market in the world. If both domestic and international are combined, then India is the fifth largest civil aviation market in the world. In the last 15 years, domestic and international cargo witnessed a growth of 60 and 53% respectively. "Our domestic cargo traffic over the last 15 years has grown by close to 60% and our international cargo traffic, by close to 53%. And it is our considered opinion and that of industry consultants that domestic traffic which was 153 million in the last calendar year, up from 60 million in 2014, will grow to 300 million by 2030," he said. On the fleet size in the country, Scindia said it has grown from 400 to over 700. "Today, India has become the largest purchaser of aircraft in the world after the US and China. Our fleet size is going to grow from 713 to upwards of 2,000 in the next decade." Observing that 74 airports were built in 65 years, he said the government has modernized and built an additional 75 airports, waterdromes and heliports in the last 10 years. "It is our target, that by 2030, we will take that number from 149 to upwards of 200 airports, waterports and heliports in our country," he said. Scindia also marked the occasion by launching the Udan 5.3 scheme. "This regional connectivity scheme has truly transformed the arena and our sector... today under Udan, infrastructure has been built at 76 airports, waterdromes and heliports. Close to 517 new routes have been operationalised that could not have been dreamt of in the past," he said. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation General (retd) VK Singh and Telangana Roads and Buildings Minister K Venkat Reddy also spoke on the occasion.

Air passenger traffic in India expected to reach 300 million by 2030: Jyotiraditya Scindia

New Delhi, The country's aviation industry has suffered a loss of ₹11,658 crore in 2021-22, the government said. According to the Civil Aviation Ministry, the details of losses incurred by the industry are: FY 2019-20 ₹4,770 crore; FY 2020-21 ₹12,479 crore; and FY 2021-22 ₹11,658 crore. The losses to the industry were primarily because of the Covid-induced disruption across the globe; currency depreciation (USD/INR); high operating cost environment, especially due to increase in ATF prices which constitute a major portion of the operational cost of airlines; increase in crude oil prices in the international market; VAT; excise duty; and the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war. Airlines were unable to pass the full impact of cost increases to the passenger, Union Civil Aviation Minister <keyword id="29632" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="jyotiraditya-scindia" source="Orion">Jyotiraditya Scindia</keyword> told the <keyword id="6355187" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="Orion">Lok Sabha</keyword> in a written reply on Thursday. The actual figure of profit/losses to the industry will be known only when the audited accounts are available at the end of the financial year 2022-23, the reply added. The airlines and major airports are operated by the private sector and they evolve their own SOPs for cost minimisation and profitability. However, the government has taken various steps to facilitate airlines. The UDAN Scheme is a game-changer for the aviation industry, the reply added. The UDAN Scheme or Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik is a regional connectivity scheme that seeks to make air travel accessible and affordable for the masses. Scindia said that the enhanced fiscal support in the form of VGF (Viable Gap Funding), concession on fuel rates, landing/parking charges and the infrastructural development of un-served airports have not only boosted the operations of giant airline companies but have also led to the participation of regional start-up airlines such as Star Air and IndiaOne Air, and <keyword id="9852691" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="flybig" source="Orion">Flybig</keyword> which are operating exceptionally well. Other measures taken by the Government included the reduction of <keyword id="6370857" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vat" source="Orion">VAT</keyword> on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) was taken up with state governments/union territories levying high VAT on ATF. As a result, 16 states have reduced the VAT in the range of 1-4 per cent. Aviation industry ₹11,658 crore loss in 2021-22

<keyword id="6358032" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="spicejet" source="Orion">SpiceJet</keyword> reported a net profit of Rs 107 crore (Rs 221 crore excluding forex adjustment) for the quarter ending December 31, 2022, as compared to a net profit of Rs 23.28 crore (Rs 20 crore excluding forex adjustment) in the quarter ending December 31, 2021. The airline on Friday said that despite a big jump in passenger traffic, business continued to be impacted by high fuel prices and the depreciating Rupee. The total revenue for the reported quarter was Rs 2,794 crore as against Rs 2,679 crore in the same quarter of the previous year. Addressing an event organised by JRD Tata Memorial Trust here, Wilson also said opportunities are there for <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> and Air India to become major players in world aviation within the next decade. Wilson, who is the managing director and chief executive officer of Air India, said the airline will increase its market share to at least 30 per cent in domestic and international routes. Air India is implementing a long-term revival plan and over the next five years, it aims to grow its wide-body and narrow-body fleet as well as expand the global network, he added. "The short-term actions have been to replace carpets, curtains, seat cushions and covers. To fix defective seats and inflight entertainment systems as fast as supply chains will allow. And where parts are no longer available in the market, to work with the likes of Tata Technologies to design and manufacture parts ourselves. "We've recently completely revamped the domestic inflight menu, and will be doing likewise, as well as launching premium economy on certain long haul international flights next month," he said. According to Wilson, the airline has restored nearly 20 aircraft that had been grounded for years due to lack of parts and money. Leaving aside cabin interiors, this has required procuring over 30,000 parts that had been cannibalised over the years to keep other aircraft flying, he added. In addition to restoring long-grounded aircraft, he said the airline has finalised leases for 30 additional aircraft being delivered over the next 12 months, starting next week, with more in the final stages of negotiation. "Beyond these short-term additions, we are in deep discussion with Boeing, <keyword id="6356166" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="airbus" source="Orion">Airbus</keyword> and engine manufacturers for a historic order of the latest-generation aircraft that will power Air India's medium and long-term growth. At the risk of gross understatement, the investment will be substantial," he said. Noting that Air India's transformation journey will be in phases, Wilson said over the next six months it will be taxiing, fixing the basics and readying itself for growth. "For the subsequent year we'll start the take off run, building for excellence and attracting those who may not have considered Air India before, and by April 2024 or thereabouts, we will leverage the work done in the earlier phases to climb rapidly, so that by 2027 we have scaled the heights of our aspiration," he added. Air India has expanded both domestically and internationally, the latter including more flights to Vancouver, Sydney and Melbourne. "We now operate non-stop to London from seven Indian cities," he said, and added that from Mumbai, the airline will be adding new non-stop service to San Francisco, New York and Newark starting in a few weeks. According to him, Air India has received more than 62,000 applications for cabin crew positions. Emphasising that the airline no longer has financial or any other constraints, he said "turning around Air India and restoring it to glory is a test match, not a T20. It will require patience, fortitude and partnerships. Though there will be the occasional six and four, it'll mostly be the steady accumulation of singles and doubles." The rapid development of new Indian airports and the government's regional air connectivity scheme UDAN to support developmental domestic routes will only strengthen the network effect that will power further growth, he stated. Air India to introduce premium economy class in certain long haul flights next month

Mumbai, Mar 31 () The government on Tuesday announced setting up of a "cargo air-bridge" between India and China, and said that regular cargo flights for transporting critical medical supplies between the two countries are likely to be operated by Air India from April 3. In an official release, the civil aviation ministry also said it has operated as many as 62 cargo services in the past five days, starting March 26, under its recently launched 'Lifeline Udan flights' initiative, transporting over 15.4 tonnes of essential medical supplies. The initiative is aimed at ferrying medical and essential supplies from one place to another across the country. "On the international front, Air India has established a cargo air-bridge between India and China. Regular cargo flights for transporting critical medical equipment and supplies between the two countries are likely to be operated by Air India from April 3, 2020 onwards," the ministry said. The Lifeline Udan flights are being operated using the hub-and-spoke model, with New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kolkata serving as the four hubs. Of the 62 flights, as many as 45 flights have been operated by the flag carrier Air India and its regional arm, Alliance Air, while the rest 17 by the Indian Air Force and private carriers IndiGo and SpiceJet, the release said. It also said Air India and IAF collaborated for operating Lifeline Udan services to Ladakh. Private carriers like IndiGo, Spicejet and BlueDart are operating medical cargo flights on a commercial basis, it stated. The lifeline cargo includes COVID-19-related reagents, enzymes, medical equipment, testing kits, personal protective equipment (PPE), masks, gloves and other accessories required by "Corona Warriors" across the country. The carriers involved in Lifeline Udan operations include Air India, Alliance Air, Indian Air Force (IAF) and Pawan Hans, the release said adding that it is also getting support from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and its cargo and logistics subsidiary AAICLAS, AI Airports Services (AIASL), PPP airports and private ground handling entities, among others. New Delhi, Apr 7 () Budget carrier SpiceJet has said it will be operating five in-cabin cargo flights on Tuesday, using a passenger aircraft, to transport vital supplies to various parts of the country amid the lockdown. Since March 27, various air operators, including Air India and its subsidiary Alliance Air have been operating cargo flights, using the belly space of the passenger plane, under Lifeline Udan initiative of the Central government, which is aimed at transportation of medical cargo and essential supplies across India at the time of the COVID-19 crisis. However, the private airlines are conducting such flights on a commercial basis. "SpiceJet has operated the country's first cargo-on-seat flight carrying vital supplies in the passenger cabin of a Boeing 737 and its belly space from Delhi to Chennai with due regulatory approvals on Tuesday," the airline claimed in a release. The aircraft will do five rotations on Tuesday ensuring that vital supplies are delivered in the shortest possible time, it said, adding the aircraft flew from Delhi to Chennai. From Chennai it operated to Surat and from Surat it operated back to Chennai. The aircraft will operate from Chennai to Mumbai and from Mumbai to Delhi later on Tuesday with cargo on-board, it said. "Since the lockdown began, we have carried more than 1,400 tons of cargo operating around 200 domestic and international cargo flights. Today, for the first time in the country, we used a passenger aircraft to transport cargo where in addition to the belly space the passenger cabin was used to safely carry essential supplies. "We have also put our five freighters to maximum use to transport cold chain medical supplies, medicines, medical devices for various state governments, medical and pharma companies," SpiceJet Chairman Ajay Singh said in a release. Special seat covers made from flame-proof material were used to cover the seats and the cargo on seat was secured with restraints, it said adding to ensure optimum utilisation of space, the overhead bin, were also used. SpiceJet's dedicated cargo arm, SpiceXpress has been regularly transporting surgical supplies, sanitizers, face masks, among others and providing doorstep deliveries of essential supplies, medicines and medical equipment across cities. In 2018-19, the gross budgetary support from central government is proposed at Rs 55,088 crore. This is a 38% increase from the revised estimates of 2017-18 (Rs 41,813 crore). However, in 2017-18 (revised estimates) GBS decreased by 12%. That is, the central government gave Railways Rs 5,231 crore less than what it had allocated in 2016-17. Internal revenue from passenger and freight traffic “In 2016-17, freight traffic contributed to about 63% of the internal revenue. In comparison, passenger traffic contributed to about 28% of the internal revenue. In 2018-19, Railways expects to earn 61% of its internal revenue from freight and 26% from passenger traffic.
