<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="20138372" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lithuania" source="keywords">Lithuania</keyword> ranks as the <keyword id="23243125" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="happiest-place" source="keywords">happiest place</keyword> for those under 30, but it also has very high suicide rates.</li><li>On the surface, it seems like a paradox. But a closer look reveals a stark generational divide.</li></ul>Domantas Katelė, an official in Lithuania's Ministry of Social Security and Labour, is widely known as his country's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-sick-leave-pto-mental-health-work-from-home-2024-8">"Gen Z"</a> minister. Rings adorn Katelė's tattooed fingers, which he uses to proudly point to his "Politicians make me sick" door sign. At 25, he's the country's youngest-ever deputy minister (he still wears braces), and rarely lets visitors leave his office without taking a selfie. Katelė's portfolio includes <keyword id="20654323" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="youth-affairs" source="keywords">youth affairs</keyword>. "It's a golden age for the youth of Lithuania," he told Business Insider during a visit to Vilnius in August. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-lithuania-happiest-country-young-people-from-local-2024-6">The World Happiness Report</a> backs up his claim, ranking <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-lithuania-world-happiest-country-for-gen-z-millennials-education-2024-6">Lithuania as the happiest place in the world for those under 30</a> earlier this year. But it would be inaccurate to paint <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/brazil-lithuania-move-career-safety-progression-make-friends-2024-1">Lithuania</a> as some sort of dreamland, Katelė adds. After all, it's also Europe's <keyword id="23243126" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="suicide-capital" source="keywords">suicide capital</keyword>. <h2>A paradox?</h2>Though the suicide rates have declined since its independence from the Soviet Union in the 1990s, Lithuania still often leads the European Union in this grim statistic. Between 2019 and 2021, Lithuania had the highest rate of death by intentional self-harm in the 27-country bloc, and, according to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.oecd.org/en/data/indicators/suicide-rates.html">OECD's most recent data</a>, it had the second-highest suicide rate globally. It seems paradoxical: How can <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vilnius-lithuania-happiest-gen-z-cheap-safe-fun-tech-hub-2024-9">a country be great for young people</a> while also being Europe's suicide capital? Katelė lists some of the reasons Lithuania is ranked so highly for young people — some of the<a target="_blank" href="https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/cache/digpub/housing/bloc-2b.html"> most affordable housing</a> in Europe, free education for many Lithuanians, and a growing economy providing ample job opportunities. Walking the streets of Vilnius in the summer, you'll find stylish young people wherever you look — sipping Aperol Spritzes at Old Town bars, lounging by the river in the artsy Užupis district, or skateboarding at the Baltasis Tiltas Skate Park. <div type="image" title="Užupis waterway" height="4284" width="5712" msid="113488780" hostid="261"></div>Although the city is steeped in history — some very dark and recent — it feels modern and vibrant. But when you talk to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-men-women-leisure-spending-habits-differ-report-shows-2024-9">Gen Zers</a> in Lithuania about its preeminence, the reaction is often the same: disbelief. A few said it made them laugh. "I was very surprised, and my friends who are living in Vilnius were also surprised," said Adriana Doroškevičiūtė, 23, sipping on an iced coffee at a café in the capital. "I thought we were depressed," she added. "When we receive the opposite of that, you think, what is happening?" Richard Bogu, 23, was also shocked. It's not that he thinks Lithuania is a bad place for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/young-people-are-developing-money-dysmorphia-2024-7">young people</a>; just that, like others, he has come to associate the country with bleakness. "We are known for being very sad people," he said, adding: "But, slowly, we're going toward being a small, happy nation." <div type="image" title="Richard Bogu sits down at a coffee table" height="4284" width="5712" msid="113488790" hostid="261"></div>Bogu said he feels optimistic about the future, especially for people his age — the tech industry, in which he works, is booming, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.lrt.lt/en/news-in-english/19/2210828/average-wage-in-lithuania-up-12-sodra">salaries are rising</a>, and jobs are ample. "This country gave me opportunities," he said. A key benefit is that most Lithuanians can enter the workforce unburdened by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/regret-paying-off-student-debt-instead-earning-passive-income-2024-7">student debt</a>, as university education is free for many. Wages are rising rapidly, and the expanding startup sector is <a target="_blank" href="https://unicorns.lt/en/news/lithuanian-startups-are-looking-hundreds-employees-not-just-it-specialists?ref=philomaths.tech">eager to hire</a> young talent. <h2>No country for old men</h2>But while things may be looking up for the younger generation, older Lithuanians don't seem to share the same optimism. According to <a target="_blank" href="https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/databrowser/view/ilc_pw01__custom_12656014/default/table?lang=en">Eurostat's 2023 overall life satisfaction survey of those aged 65 years or over,</a> older Lithuanians are nowhere near as happy as the country's youth. This generational divide bears out in the <keyword id="21021432" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Happiness-Report" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="World Happiness Report" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="World Happiness Report">World Happiness Report</keyword>. While Lithuania ranked first for those under 30, it was 19th across all age groups, dragged down by its 44th-place ranking for those over 60. "If you don't have children or grandchildren to care for you, you're basically done," Bogu said. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retirees-moving-social-security-cheaper-living-healthcare-canada-japan-mexico-2024-9#:~:text=Retirees%20are%20increasingly%20moving%20abroad,Canada%2C%20Mexico%2C%20and%20Japan.">Retirees</a> in Lithuania receive some of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.etk.fi/en/work-and-pensions-abroad/international-comparisons/pensioners-income-level-internationally/average-pensions-in-europe/">lowest pensions</a> in Europe, and have <a target="_blank" href="https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/databrowser/view/tespn060/default/table?lang=en&amp;category=t_ilc.t_ilc_ip.t_ilc_pn">among the lowest median relative income</a> of older people across the European Union. Data provided to BI by Lithuania's Ministry of Social Security and Labour shows that 62% of those who died by suicide in 2023 were over 50, with 8.7% under 30. It's a far starker divide than in countries like the US or UK, pointing to a chasm between the generations. <a target="_blank" href="mailto:grizas.antanas@gmail.com">Antanas Grižas</a>, a clinical psychologist specializing in suicide prevention in Lithuania, said the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-kid-baby-boomer-parents-generational-differences-parenting-lessons-2024-4">generational divide</a> is deeply felt in the country, as well as elsewhere in the former Soviet Bloc. He told BI that economic factors, such as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boomer-retirement-savings-social-security-pension-budgeting-2024-7">low retirement incomes</a>, certainly impact mental health, but that the historical context is key, too. <div type="image" title="A Soviet-era building with a sign reading &quot;Vilnius&quot; is seen in Vilnius, Lithuania on 28 July, 2024." height="684" width="1024" msid="113488788" hostid="261"></div>"The changes after the fall of the Soviet Union were very fast and drastic," he says. Those who lived through this period faced a double trauma: enduring Soviet rule and navigating the chaotic transition to an independent capitalist nation. Plus, as Grižas points out, psychiatry was sometimes politicized under <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vintage-photos-show-life-behind-the-iron-curtain">Soviet rule,</a> with dissidents being labeled as mentally ill, which has strengthened a generational <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stephen-hays-mental-health-vc-what-if-ventures-addiction-2024-7">stigma over mental health.</a> "The <keyword id="19919711" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gen-Z" source="keywords">Gen Z</keyword>, haven't experienced that directly, " he noted. "So it makes total sense that they have different conditioning and a different mindset." Reports like the happiness rankings are also often based on self-assessments, and Grižas suggests that comparisons may play a key part in the variation between the generations. "The younger generation can easily compare and see the progress that we as a nation made," he said. <div type="image" title="Domantas Katelė in front of his office door" height="4284" width="5712" msid="113488778" hostid="261"></div>Katelė, the "Gen Z" minister, agrees that the positive self-assessments among the youth may have been influenced by their awareness of the hardships faced by their elders. While the previous generation was deprived of luxuries, he said Gen Z can relish the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-gen-z-feels-good-about-money-inflation-jobs-2024-6">freedom to spend</a> the equivalent of $160 on dinner, to vacation abroad, and to participate in democracy. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Russia is weighing a plan to combine three of its oil giants, The Wall Street Journal reported. </li><li>The report says the merger would help Russian energy be more competitive amid slowing oil demand.</li></ul>Russia is considering a plan to combine three of its oil giants, making for the world's second-largest largest oil producer, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/business/energy-oil/russia-explores-plan-to-merge-oil-giants-into-mega-producer-80a6aa6b">The Wall Street Journal reported</a>. The deal would involve state-backed Rosneft Oil taking over state-owned Gazprom Neft (a subsidiary of Gazprom) and the independently-run Lukoil, the Journal report said. Sources speaking with the Journal said the possible deal is subject to change and has been discussed among executives and government officials over the past few months.Talks of similar mergers have circulated in recent years, but there remain some hurdles, like opposition from executives at Rosneft and Lukoil, plus the large amount of financing needed to pay Lukoil's shareholders, the report said.It added that the merger is part of Putin's effort to compete with Saudi Arabia while oil demand slows amid a push toward renewable sources. If successful, the post-merger entity would be one of the world's largest oil producers, second only to Saudi Aramco, which produced almost 10 million barrels of oil a day in 2023, according to data from Rystad Energy UCube.It would also pump nearly three times that of US oil producer Exxon Mobil, the report added.The deal's proponents say the merger could generate far more revenue since the oil output from the three companies could be sold through Litasco, Lukoil's trading unit in Dubai.That would help fuel Putin's war effort in Ukraine. Oil and gas are key lifelines for Russia's economy, and provide nearly a third of federal revenue, but have faced new obstacles amid Western sanctions.Rosneft, Gazprom Neft, and Lukoil all face sanctions, making it difficult to engage in the energy trade with partners around the world. The report comes as oil prices have been largely depressed this year, partly because China has suffered a prolonged economic downturn and as the conflict in the Middle East hasn't resulted in any disruption to supply. The report said spokespeople from some of the involved parties denied the deal. A Rosneft spokesperson said the information was incorrect, while a Lukoil spokesperson said the company was not involved in merger talks because it would not be in the interest of the company, the report says. A state spokesperson, meanwhile, said the administration was not aware of a deal, the report adds.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>TSMC halted shipments to a client after its chips were found in Huawei products, per reports.</li><li>TSMC and other chipmakers are barred from doing business with Huawei without US government approval.</li></ul>Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company has cut off shipments to a client after the chips it sent were found in products produced by Huawei Technologies — which is under US export control — an unnamed Taipei <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.barrons.com/news/taiwan-s-tsmc-stops-shipments-to-client-after-chips-sent-to-huawei-f136ea24">government official told AFP.</a>TSMC notified the US and Taiwanese governments due to the possible violations of US sanctions to restrict tech transfers to the Chinese firm, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-10-23/tsmc-cuts-off-client-after-discovering-chips-diverted-to-huawei">per Bloomberg.</a> TSMC is Taiwan's largest company and the world's largest dedicated independent semiconductor foundry.TSMC and other chipmakers are barred from doing business with Huawei without US government approval. The sanctions are part of efforts to restrict Huawei's technological capabilities, especially in areas like 5G and AI. The reports raise questions about supply chain transparency and could lead to increased export scrutiny, according to researchers and analysts who spoke with BI. On Wednesday, John Moolenaar, the chairman of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, slammed the development in a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://selectcommitteeontheccp.house.gov/media/press-releases/moolenaar-tsmc-chips-huawei-catastrophic-failure-export-control-policy">statement.</a>"Reports that cutting-edge TSMC-manufactured chips have contributed to Huawei's AI development represent a catastrophic failure of US export control policy," he said. "AI accelerators, like the one that these chips fueled, are at the forefront of our technology race with the CCP, and I fear the damage done here will have significant consequences for our national security," Moolenaar added. "Congress needs immediate answers from both BIS and TSMC about the scope and volume of this disaster. The US government must take immediate steps to ensure this does not happen again."TSMC, Huawei, and the Commerce Department did not immediately respond to Business Insider's requests for comments.TSMC told Bloomberg that it stopped all shipments to Huawei after September 15, 2020. It declined to comment on the reports that its chips had ended up in Huawei products. "TSMC is a law-abiding company, and we are committed to complying with all applicable rules and regulations, including applicable export controls," TSMC said in its emailed statement to Bloomberg. "We proactively communicated with the US Commerce Department regarding the matter in the report. We are not aware of TSMC being the subject of any investigation at this time."<h2 id="fe26c08e-cd2e-4e3d-a477-f5211b02bcea">A 'shadow network' of chips</h2>The report adds to US concerns that Huawei is potentially obtaining advanced chips despite being blacklisted since 2020. A US semiconductor association <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-08-23/huawei-building-secret-chip-plants-in-china-to-bypass-us-sanctions-group-warns">warned last year</a> that Huawei was building a shadow manufacturing network.Min-yen Chiang, a researcher who focuses on the political economy of semiconductors, told Business Insider the development raises the question of opacity surrounding Huawei's "shadow network" of chips, including how big the web is and the nature of the network.He said public information suggests TSMC has been closely following export controls, but Huawei's network needs to be better understood to improve due diligence."If it remains unclear, what happened with TSMC could happen to other chip manufacturers as they wouldn't know if the chips that they sell would be resold to Huawei," Chiang said. <h2 id="22ca6e98-7cd9-45ff-b108-05b66813c717">Supply chain issues</h2>The situation could also have other implications, including distrust about TSMC's supply chain and more intense regulatory scrutiny, analysts said. It's the first deployment of US forces to Israel since the October 7, 2023, terrorist attacks by Hamas that sparked the conflict.The THAAD, or Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, is considered to be among the best in the world. It is believed to cost somewhere between $1.96 and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://static.rusi.org/201508_op_ballistic_missile_defence.pdf">$3.25 billion.</a>Lockheed Martin, its makers, says it can defend against short-, medium-, and intermediate-range ballistic missile threats. It's the only missile defense system designed to intercept targets either inside or outside the Earth's atmosphere. In his CNN interview, Hertling explained that the system enhances Israel's air defense capabilities.While Israel's famed "Iron Dome" is designed to deal with rockets and low-altitude missiles, and its "Arrow" system can take out high-altitude missiles, the THAAD system operates in a different way to both. Hertling said that instead of firing a missile that explodes near another missile or rocket the crew is seeking to intercept, it hits it directly. It has six launchers, capable of firing around eight missiles at a time, dramatically increasing the chances of intercepting incoming Iranian missiles. Its missiles are reported to have a range of up to 124 miles (200km)."If there is a reaction to any kind of Israeli strike against Iran in the coming days. This is the best system in the world," Hertling said. The Pentagon has also dramatically increased <a target="_blank" rel="" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-warships-aircraft-ready-fight-more-violence-grips-middle-east-2024-9">its military presence</a> in and around the Middle East since the war in Gaza began last October.A recent<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-spent-over-22-billion-arming-israel-battling-houthis-2024-10"> report by The Costs of War Project,</a> a Brown University research initiative, found the US has spent $22 billion on military operations in the Middle East over the past year.The US provides Israel with around $3.8 billion a year in military aid, and since the October 7 terrorist attacks has provided a total of $17.9 billion in security assistance to the country, the report found. And back in 2019, when Iran-backed Houthi rebels attacked Saudi oil facilities, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/IF/IF12645/2">the US deployed a THAAD system </a>to protect the Kingdom. But if she aimed to prove that her new songs could hang with her beloved hits, I regret to report that she failed. New Delhi: India's fossil fuel emissions are projected to rise by 4.6 per cent in 2024, while China could see a marginal rise of 0.2 per cent, according to new research by a group of international scientists. As the UN climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, discussed raising trillions of dollars to tackle <keyword id="19907392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Climate-change" source="keywords">climate change</keyword>, the group of scientists known as the "Global Carbon Project" warned that emissions from fossil fuels -- the main driver of warming -- could hit a record 37.4 billion tonnes in 2024, up 0.8 percent from 2023 levels. This comes despite rapid growth in renewable energy and a landmark agreement at COP28 in Dubai last year to move away from fossil fuels. The "<keyword id="23948569" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-carbon-budget-2024" source="keywords">Global Carbon Budget 2024</keyword>" report said total global CO2 emissions are set to go up from 40.6 billion tons in 2023 to 41.6 billion metric tons in 2024, which is on course to become the warmest year on record. "The impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly dramatic, yet we still see no sign that burning of fossil fuels has peaked," Professor Pierre Friedlingstein of Exeter's Global Systems Institute, who led the study, said. The 'Global Carbon Project' team said India, the world's most populous country and fastest-growing major economy, may see its fossil fuel emissions rise by 4.6 percent. According to a UN report released last month, India's greenhouse gas emissions surged by 6.1 per cent in 2023, contributing to 8 per cent of the global total. However, the country's historical contribution to global CO2 emissions stands at only 3 per cent. India's per capita emissions remain low at 2.9 tons of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e), far below the global average of 6.6 tCO2e. India, the world's third-largest greenhouse gas emitter, has pledged to reach net zero emissions (balancing emissions with removals) by 2070 and aims to achieve 500 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030. China's emissions, which make up 32 per cent of the global total, are likely to increase slightly by 0.2 per cent, though there is a chance they could decline, according to the data released on Wednesday. Emissions from the United States and the European Union, which contribute 13 per cent and 7 per cent of the global total, are both set to decline, with drops of 0.6 per cent for the US and 3.8 per cent for the EU. Emissions from the rest of the world, which together account for 38 per cent of global emissions, could see a rise of 1.1 per cent. The researchers said that in 2024, coal emissions will likely increase by 0.2 per cent, oil by 0.9 per cent, and gas by 2.4 per cent, globally. Coal, oil, and gas contribute 41 per cent, 32 per cent, and 21 per cent of global fossil CO2 emissions, respectively. However, given the uncertainty in projections, it remains possible that coal emissions could decline in 2024, they said. The report also pointed out that emissions from international aviation and shipping, which account for 3 per cent of global emissions and are tracked separately from national or regional totals, are expected to rise by 7.8 per cent in 2024. However, these emissions will still be 3.5 per cent below the 2019 pre-pandemic levels. Globally, emissions from land-use changes, like deforestation, have dropped by 20 per cent over the past decade but are expected to rise in 2024. Permanent CO2 removal through reforestation and new forest planting now offsets about half of the emissions from permanent deforestation, they added. Technology-based CO2 removal accounts for only a tiny fraction -- around one-millionth -- of CO2 emissions from fossil fuels. The report said that emissions from fires in 2024 have been above the average since the beginning of the satellite record in 2003, particularly due to the extreme 2023 wildfire season in Canada (which continued into 2024) and severe drought in Brazil. Land and ocean carbon sinks continued to absorb around half of the total carbon emissions, despite being negatively affected by climate change.

Top reasons for this were easy access to digital media, especially news consumption out of home and while commuting. Interestingly, there were also mentions around how a digital medium would be more sustainable and planet friendly than newspaper prints, reflecting an emerging concern for the planet and <keyword id="20224417" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sustainable-living" source="keywords">sustainable living</keyword>. "While the preference for digital delivery is expected, it's heartening to see that legacy newspapers can still find relevance even with younger readers, by adapting to digital formats," said Geetika Kambli, Founder at Humanify. "The study was run on Humanify's app, capturing conversations by readers around their preferred reading habits, and using AI to convert this unstructured data into a research report in minutes. AI is redefining the way we experience products and express our feelings about them.
