Some of the employees who lost their jobs at Twitter <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> and did not wish to be named told IANS that when they logged in to their systems from home (Twitter is still in the work-from-home mode) on Friday, they were denied access. "Now we are waiting for the email with the subject line 'if your employment is impacted, you will receive a notification with next steps via your personal email', as mentioned by the company. We are clueless on our severance pay, etc.," they lamented. It was still unclear how many of the about 200 Twitter India employees have lost jobs in the global restructuring exercise. Those who are still with Twitter India are living in constant fear about losing their jobs in the next round, which they think will happen sooner keeping <keyword id="364027" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="musk" source="Orion">Musk</keyword>'s intentions in mind. "It is one of the most inhumane ways to get rid of us. After spending so many years at Twitter India, we were left without any communication since Musk took over," the affected workers told IANS. In Twitter's Slack and group chat groups, employees earlier complained about the lack of internal communication from their senior executives, after Musk took over as the new CEO last week. The new CEO aims to cut roughly half of its 7,600-strong workforce, about 3,800 employees. According to the company, the employee badge access to Twitter's offices has already been shut off "temporarily". "To help ensure the safety of each employee as well as Twitter systems and customer data, our offices will be temporarily closed and all badge access will be suspended. If you are in an office or on your way to an office, please return home," Twitter said in an internal memo. "We acknowledge this is an incredibly challenging experience to go through, whether or not you are impacted," the memo further read. "Thank you for continuing to adhere to Twitter policies that prohibit you from discussing confidential company information on social media, with the press or elsewhere," the company added. "Deeply concerning that #India has blocked the flow of information to Indian Twitter by withholding access to the following official accounts," Geo News quoted the Ministry as saying in a tweet on Monday night, while listing down the banned accounts. The banned accounts include accounts of the Pakistani Embassy in UN, Turkey, Iran and Egypt. "Diminishing space for plurality of voices &amp; access to info in India is extremely alarming," the tweet added. The Ministry called out Twitter, saying that social media platforms should abide by the applicable international norms. It said that the government of Pakistan is urging the tech company to restore access to the restricted accounts immediately and ensure adherence to democratic freedoms of speech and expression. Meanwhile, the Twitter handles of journalists, including The News and Geo News reporter in London, <keyword id="14309060" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="murtaza-ali-shah" source="Orion">Murtaza Ali Shah</keyword> and CJ Werleman have also been withheld by the company under India's Information Technology Act, 2000, Geo News reported. Murtaza Ali Shah has around 550,000 followers on his verified Twitter @MurtazaViews account. He has been associated with The News and Geo for more than 17 years. Shah confirmed he received an email notice from Twitter about India's legal action against his account. This time around, its Indian users are leaving the platform join Mastodon – an open source social media platform. A large number of users are suspending their accounts and accusing Twitter of discrimination. A much lesser known Mastodon is gaining from the anger. The open source platform allows users to create their own communities through their own servers. Mastodon is a decentralised platform, not owned by anyone. As it doesn’t allow advertising, monetizing, or venture capital, the platform accepts donations. The platform was created by German coder Eugen Rochko in 2016 and has a tagline – Social networking, back in your hands. It allows users to publish text, images, links, videos etc. It also promises a safer social media environment. “Twitter forces you to choose between two extremes, a protected account and a fully public account. If you have a public account, all your tweets are visible to everyone and infinitely shareable. What went wrong with Twitter Twitter India is alleged of showing bias based on caste. Multiple prominent accounts of <a href="https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/what-mastodon-and-why-scores-twitter-users-are-migrating-it-111951">Dalit, Bahujan, and Adivasi (DBA) communities have suspended their accounts. </a> The movement started after the account of a senior columnist Dilip C Mandal was restricted by the social media giant. Though he got his account back, <keyword id="68160" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="twitter-users">Twitter users</keyword> began pointing out the disparity on the social media platform. "There's been a lot of discussion this week about Twitter's perceived bias in India. To be clear, whether it's the development of policies, product features, or enforcement of our rules, we are impartial and do not take action based upon any ideology or political viewpoint," Twitter India said in a statement. The social media giant further added that in its training, they extensively cover topics such as religion and caste to provide teams with necessary local context they need to evaluate content. Regarding the verification process, Twitter India said their public verification process is closed. “While we are reviewing the entire program, on a limited case-by-case basis we do verify public figures who are active in the public conversation,” the company said. Twitter India users are leaving to ‘create their own social media’ platform on Mastodon

Social media giant Twitter has apologised in writing to a key parliamentary panel for wrongly showing Ladakh in China and has promised to correct the error by the month-end, the committee's chairperson Meenakshi Lekhi said on Wednesday. Twitter's deposition has come in form of an affidavit signed by Damien Karien, Chief Privacy Officer of Twitter Inc, for wrong geo-tagging of India's map, Lekhi told . Last month, the Joint Committee of Parliament on Data Protection Bill had come down heavily on Twitter for showing Ladakh as part of China, saying it amounted to treason and had sought an explanation by the US-based parent of the social media platform in form of an affidavit. Appearing before the panel, chaired by Lekhi, representatives of <keyword id="749437" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter-India">Twitter India</keyword> had "begged apology", but they were told by the members that it was a criminal offence that questioned the sovereignty of the country and an affidavit must be submitted by Twitter Inc, not by its 'marketing arm' Twitter India. "Twitter has now given us a written apology on an affidavit for Ladakh being shown in China," Lekhi said. "They have apologised for hurting Indian sentiments and have sworn to correct the error by November 30, 2020," she added. Twitter had come under heavy criticism and faced a backlash from social media users after its geotagging feature displayed "Jammu &amp; Kashmir, the People's Republic of China" in a live broadcast from Leh's Hall of Fame, a war memorial for fallen soldiers in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The Indian government on October 22 had warned Twitter about its location setting that showed Leh in China, saying any disrespect towards the country's sovereignty and integrity is totally unacceptable. In a strongly-worded letter, Ajay Sawhney, Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), asked Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to respect the country's sensitivities, sources in the ministry had said. At that time, Twitter had called it a technical issue that had been swiftly resolved. In its affidavit submitted before the parliamentary panel, Twitter is believed to have said the issue was "caused due to a software error combined with imperfect data resulting in an incorrect geo-tag". "In the last few weeks, we have worked towards resolving the geo-tag issue in a manner wherein Leh as well as other cities in the Union Territory of Ladakh will now accurately show with their respective city name, state and country. "In addition to this, we are also reviewing the geo-tag for various other cities in Jammu and Kashmir. This work is already in progress and we are targeting November 30, 2020 to complete this exercise," it added. Twitter further said it wanted to reiterate that India was a priority market and it was committed to partnering with the Government of India and MeitY to serve the public conversation and communities on the micro-blogging site. "Our team in India will continue to engage with the Ministry for any follow-up discussions. We would also like to apologise for any sentiments that were hurt because of this error," it added. On October 28, Twitter's India representatives were questioned for more than two hours by the panel members, mainly on Ladakh being shown as part of China on the Twitter app. "The committee was of the unanimous opinion that Twitter's explanation on showing Ladakh as part of China was inadequate," Lekhi had said after the meeting. Twitter was also asked about its banning policy, while some members also raised questions about Twitter's transparency policy and its actions during elections, especially vis-a-vis their policies in other countries. Twitter launches live scorecard for cricket, announces first community in India for cricket fans

The Indian government asked <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/rahul-gandhi-writes-to-twitter-ceo-parag-agrawal-on-suppressed-follower-count/articleshow/89149557.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Twitter</a> for data on 2,200 user accounts in the January-June 2021 period and the micro-blogging platform complied with just 2 per cent of the requests. There were also nearly 5,000 legal demands to remove <keyword id="6354616" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="twitter" source="Orion">Twitter</keyword> accounts from India in the reporting period, the company's latest transparency report has revealed. Global government preservation requests decreased by 4 per cent, while accounts specified increased by 24 per cent during this reporting period. The US (57 per cent) and India (25 per cent) together accounted for 82 per cent of all global preservation requests. Since Twitter started bringing out its transparency report in 2012, India has requested information on 11,667 user accounts, which is 10 per cent of the global information requests. The US submitted the most government information requests, accounting for 24 per cent of the global volume, and 27 per cent of the global accounts specified. The second highest volume of requests originated from India, comprising 18 per cent of global information requests and 30 per cent of the global accounts specified. Twitter said that it partially disclosed or did not disclose information in response to 64 per cent of global government information requests, a decrease of 9 per cent during this reporting period. Japan, Brazil, and the US were the top three requesting countries when it comes to non-government requests, with all three accounting for 89 per cent of all requests and 87 per cent of the total accounts specified for this period. In terms of legal demands from governments, in the six-month period, Twitter received 43,387 legal demands to remove content, specifying 196,878 accounts. "This is the largest number of accounts ever subject to removal requests in a reporting period since releasing our first transparency report in 2012," the company said late on Wednesday. In the January-June period, Twitter required account holders to remove 4.7 million tweets that violated its rules. Of the Tweets removed, 68 per cent received fewer than 100 impressions prior to removal, with an additional 24 per cent receiving between 100 and 1,000 impressions. In these six months, Twitter permanently suspended 453,754 unique accounts for violations of its child sexual exploitation (CSE) policy. In the first half of 2021, Twitter suspended 44,974 unique accounts for promotion of terrorism and violent organisations. According to Article 4(d) of India's Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, Twitter is required to publish a monthly report regarding its handling of complaints from users in India, including action taken on them, as well as the number of URLs that Twitter has taken action as a result of proactive monitoring efforts.

Twitter on Wednesday announced it is testing <keyword id="3527677" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="voice-messages">voice messages</keyword> in <keyword id="1601729" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Direct-messages">direct messages</keyword> (DMs) up to 140-seconds long in India. The experiment will be rolled out in phases to the audiences, making India one of three countries to have access to the feature, alongside Brazil and Japan. According to the company, voice messages in DMs will make it easier for people to have conversations. "We're excited to bring the voice messages in DMs experiment to the country and give people a new way to express themselves and help them connect through the nuances, emotion, and empathy built by hearing someone's voice," said Manish Maheshwari, Managing Director, <keyword id="749437" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter-India">Twitter India</keyword>. Each voice message can be upto 140 seconds long and can help people chat quickly - whether on the move or when there's just too much to type. "We are dedicated to giving people more options to express themselves in conversations on Twitter - both publicly and privately," said Alex Ackerman-Greenberg, Product Manager for direct messages at Twitter. This is how the new feature will work. In a DM conversation, tap the new voice recording icon once to begin recording. Tap the stop icon when you're done and you'll have the option to listen to your recording before sending or deleting it. Alternatively, on iOS, you can also quick-send by holding down the voice recording icon and swiping up to send immediately after you're done talking. Anyone will have the ability to listen to these messages wherever and however they use Twitter, but the ability to record voice messages over DM will be available for people on Twitter for iOS and Android in India, Japan and Brazil.
