Twitter will shut down the TweetDeck for Mac app from 1st July

<keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> has announced a new and improved version of <keyword id="323288" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="TweetDeck">TweetDeck</keyword>, and is testing new features with a small group of users in the US, Canada and Australia.<br /><br /><keyword id="11687360" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tweekdeck">TweekDeck</keyword> is a social media dashboard which many Twitter users are not aware of, and the company may turn its into a new <keyword id="2449728" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="subscription-service">subscription service</keyword> in the near future.<br /><br />The new features in TweetDeck include "a full Tweet Composer, new advanced search features, new column types, and a new way to group columns into clean workspaces," Twitter Product Lead Kayvon Beykpour said in a tweet on Tuesday.<br /><br />The company has rolled out a preview of the new and improved version of TweetDeck to a limited number of accounts, with enhanced functionalities.<br /><br />"We're testing this preview with a small group of randomly-selected people in the United States, Canada, and Australia to start. If you're eligible, you'll see an invitation within TweetDeck to opt in," Twitter announced.<br /><br />TweetDeck allows users to follow someone from multiple accounts. Twitter rolls out a new version of TweetDeck, may turn it into a subscription service

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Screenshot</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>I'm what you would consider a Twitter power user. </p><p>Checking my Twitter feed is a constant habit throughout the day, whether I'm looking for the latest tech news or a funny GIF.</p><p>There are plenty of third-party Twitter apps on the Mac to choose from, including <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/twitter/id409789998?mt=12">Twitter's official app</a> and <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tweetdeck-by-twitter/id485812721?mt=12">TweetDeck</a>. A lot of people use TweetDeck, but I can't stand the design. It also doesn't do everything I want, like save links to read later.</p><p>Tweetbot has been my favorite Twitter app for years <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tweetbot-3-for-twitter.-elegant/id722294701?mt=8">on the iPhone</a>, but its Mac app has been in sore need of a redesign for some time. It has integration with services like Instapaper and Pocket for saving links to read later, and the ability to mute specific people, keywords, hashtags, and even tweets from certain apps. You can save searches, manage Twitter lists, and do just about everything else you'd want to do when using Twitter.</p><p><strong>But the main reason I love Tweetbot is my timeline syncs with iCloud</strong>, Apple's cloud service. It lets me pick up where I left off in my timeline between my iPhone and Mac, and it works seamlessly. So if I'm reading Twitter on the train and get to my desk at work, I can pick up in my timeline exactly where I stopped reading on my iPhone.</p><p>If you care about not skipping over tweets in your timeline like I do, Tweetbot's syncing is a killer feature.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Screenshot.</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>There are also a lot of improvements under the hood that make the new Tweetbot faster and better, and its developers told Business Insider that more features are planned for a future update.</p><p>One of the biggest downsides to Tweetbot right now is that you can't do group DMs, meaning you can't send private messages to more than on person. So if you rely heavily on that feature, I recommend sticking with one of Twitter's official apps. Forget TweetDeck, this is the best Twitter app for power users on the Mac

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Screenshot</span></p><p class="caption">TweetDeck for Mac.</p></div><p></p></div></div>TweetDeck, Twitter's tool for real-time tracking and engagement of posts, </span><a href="https://twitter.com/__Freakyclown__/status/476749163020161024" target="_blank">is reportedly vulnerable</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> to cross-site scripting (XSS), a type of computer vulnerability commonly found in web applications that allows hackers to inject script into webpages to access user accounts and important security information.</span></p>
<p>If you own a TweetDeck account, we recommend you log out of TweetDeck but also revoke its access to Twitter until the company fixes this security issue.</p>
<p>According to programmer Chris Williams, Tweetdeck "is not stripping out dangerous scripting code from tweets," which in turn allows anyone to "run Javascript in the context of another user."</p>

<p>The vulnerability currently affects Tweetdeck's browser plug-in for Google Chrome. It apparently doesn't affect the desktop app for Mac or Windows, but you're safer changing your password just in case.</p>

If You Use TweetDeck, You Should Change Your Password Right Now

<p>Finding the right Twitter client can be a difficult thing to do.</p><p>On desktop, TweetDeck rules the roost for those of us "power users" who need to see many different types of tweets and regularly interact with them.</p><p>On mobile, I'm not a big fan of Twitter's native client, and other than that there isn't a lot in the app store to write home about. Except one other app that's stood above them all for me: <a href="http://tapbots.com/tweetbot/mac/">Tweetbot.</a></p><p>Tweetbot has a fantastic mobile app that's well worth the few dollars you have to spend to get it. They also have a Mac version, but it's much more expensive. Traditionally it's in the $20 range, so you have to really want this Twitter client to pony up for it.</p><p>Last week, Tweetbot rolled out it's much anticipated 3.0 update on the Mac app, clearly made to rival TweetDeck. People immediately started raving about it. And I finally decided to buy the app for the first time for $13 on sale.</p><p>But the transition from TweetDeck has been hard, and I've come to the conclusion that Tweetbot is really good, but missing too much right now in the early stages of this version to justify the heavy $13 price tag.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>To the right is a snippet of the basic Timeline in Tweetbot. It's clean, image previews are great, and the display is pleasing to look at.</p><p>If you choose to have it do so, your timeline will stream down and give you real-time information on when the tweet was posted (the seconds literally tick per post).</p><p>When you click those links on the left, that main Timeline Window changes to mentions, favorites, direct messages, your profile, a list, etc. </p><p>It's basic Twitter done well, and it's surprising how many clients actually don't nail this very simple idea.</p><p>If you double click a tweet, you get a very useful display. You can do all sorts of stuff here including getting easy links to the tweet, reply, retweet, or whatever else you want. When you click over the the actual account information things like muting and blocking are also very easy.</p><p>Tweetbot gets the basics perfect, and that's why it's always been my favorite mobile app. When you're on your phone, that's all you need. You want to look at one timeline in a clear way and easily interact with it.</p><p>But Tweetbot has bigger ambitions, as it should, on desktop.</p><p>TweetDeck is the industry standard on desktop because of how easy it is to see a lot of stuff at once and interact with what you want. You can simply see all your lists, favorites, notifications, and activity feed, and shuttle between them with ease.</p><p>Tweetbot is taking aim at the industry standard with the advent of columns of its own. I was eager to give it a shot because of my love of Tweetbot on mobile, and my frustration with TweetDeck consistently freezing and other bugs.</p><p>Every list you've created, along with mentions, favorites, searches, etc. can be opened up in a new column, allowing you to create a Tweetdeck-like look that appears to be perfect for power users.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">It looks great. I can see most of the stuff I want to see in a snapshot (I usually have Twitter always up on a monitor throughout the day), and every tweet has the great simple features of the general timeline.</span></p><p>But once you use it for a bit, the lack of simple multitasking features is frustrating.</p><p>For example, while my timeline on the far left streams in real time, the lists I've created just pile up new posts that I have to scroll through. That makes it impossible for me to just glance and get the most recent information on the topic I've created a list for.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">You also can't move around these columns. The order they appear in is the order you create them in. If you want to move them around you have to recreate everything.</span></p><p>There's also no other theme right now. On mobile, Tweetbot is available in both light and dark modes. If you buy this version, you're only getting light right now.</p><p>I should note that I'm still using it and trying to get used to it. I paid $13 after all, and I don't hate it.</p><p>But how long I'll last without these key features, I'm not sure so far. It is notable though that all these issues will go away in future updates. So it's possible that soon, Tweetbot might be the app it needs to be to replace Tweetdeck. "Look at the logo of Huawei. It has cut APPLE into pieces…" He included a photo of a cut-up Apple for comparison:</p><p>Huawei is currently the second-largest smartphone producer in the world, despite being essentially locked out of the US market. This was despite Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey saying journalists have an important role to play in bringing wrongdoing to the firm's attention.</p><p>Dorsey is under significant pressure to oust Jones permanently. A campaign, started by #grabyourwallet consumer activist Shannon Coulter, has gone viral, <a href="https://twitter.com/shannoncoulter/status/1028632688586936320" target="_blank" rel="noopener">encouraging Twitter users to block every Fortune 500 company with a Twitter presence</a>. The hope is that this will impact Twitter's ad revenue.</p><p>Dorsey has said, however, that the social network will not be cowed by outside pressure. Twitter put Alex Jones on the naughty step with a 7-day ban

The columns I've arranged of constantly incoming tweets are like the descending green code from The Matrix. Those columns tell me what's going on, and I personally, as well as professionally, need to know what's going on.</p><p>Suffice it to say, I think TweetDeck is a pretty important tool. But I'm always open to explore new ways to keep on top of the news. That's why my colleague <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/forget-tweetdeck-this-is-the-best-twitter-app-for-power-users-on-the-mac-2015-6">Alex Heath's article about TweetBot</a> intrigued me. TweetBot looks like it has a nicer, cleaner interface than TweetDeck, and I'd like to check out how it's better. </p><p>But for $13? No way. And that's a price drop from the previous version of the app, which costs $20! And yes, I'm willing to spend $650 for a smartphone, but I won't pay $13 for an app I haven't tried myself before. That's because $650 is what premium smartphones generally cost, and I know what I'm getting with a new $650 phone.</p><p>This chart <a href="https://intelligence.businessinsider.com">from BI Intelligence</a> gives you a good idea how much people are willing to pay for apps:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider Intelligence</span></p><p class="caption">If TweetBot is $13, and the average we're willing to pay for social apps is $2.18, maybe a free trial is in order?</p></div><p></p></div></div>TweetBot is a Mac/iOS exclusive app, and if I wanted to get a refund because I didn't like it or see its value over TweetDeck, I would need to dig through several menus and submenus in the App Store. Then I'd need to write out a compelling reason why I want a refund, and then wait for Apple to either accept of decline my reasoning, which could take up to <a href="http://ioshacker.com/how-to/get-refund-app-purchased-app-store">a few weeks, and even months</a> and isn't guaranteed.</p><p>If there was an Android version of TweetBot, I'd be able to pay for the app and get a no-questions-asked refund within two hours of installing it on my phone. Two hours isn't exactly enough time to fully evaluate whether you'd like an app or not, but it's <em>something</em>, and I don't need to write in and plead with a company to give me my money back.</p><p>I first experienced Google's Play Store refund and return policy when trying out different watch faces for an Android Wear watch. Google's app store has one key advantage over Apple's

<p>On Wednesday, Twitter announced that it's officially removing the 140 character limit on direct messages, allowing people to write private messages to each other without worrying about length.</p><p><span>Twitter first announced it planned to remove the 140 character limit on DMs </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-removes-140-character-limit-dms">back in June</a><span>, but the company is finally implementing the change across its website, iOS and Android apps, Twitter for Mac, and TweetDeck.</span></p><p><span>"While Twitter is largely a public experience, Direct Messages let you have private conversations about the memes, news, movements, and events that unfold on Twitter," <a href="https://blog.twitter.com/2015/removing-the-140-character-limit-from-direct-messages">the announcement on Twitter's blog says</a>. Twitter is killing the favorite

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Antonio Villas-Boas/Tech Insider</span></p><p class="caption">My 2012 MacBook Pro.</p></div><p></p></div></div>It'll be a sad day when the MacBook Pro I bought in 2012 becomes old and unusably slow and I'll have to buy a new MacBook Pro.</p><p>But thanks to a simple yet effective feature in MacBook Pros made between 2008 and 2012,<span> my laptop will live on until at least 2020, and probably longer.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Normally, with the way I use my computer, it would have lasted two years and I would have had to buy a new computer for $1,800 or more.</span></p><p><span>What's this feature that holds the secret to longevity? The source of the fountain of computer youth that let me keep that $1800+ for better things?</span></p><p><span>A removable bottom that let me switch out the RAM. </span></p><p><span>Ever since 2013, Apple's MacBook Pros were made with unibody designs, which means they don't let you remove the bottom to add parts and upgrade your computer. That's why the last great MacBook Pro was the 2012 model.</span></p><p><span>RAM, for those who might not know, is your computer's backpocket where it stores everything you have open on your screen, including apps and web browser tabs, so you can use and access them quickly. Without enough RAM, your computer will be slow, and as apps and websites evolve, they'll use up more RAM over time.</span></p><p><span>My 2012 MacBook Pro came with a measly 4GB of RAM, which realistically isn't enough power by today's standards if you have three or more open apps and 20+ open Chrome tabs. To give you some perspective as to how little 4GB of RAM is, many recent flagship Android smartphones come with 4GB of RAM.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Tech Insider</span></p><p class="caption">These are RAM "sticks." Note: these aren't the original sticks that came with my MacBook Pro.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>The other parts in my 2012 MacBook Pro, like the super-powerful Core i7, are more than enough to handle my everyday work tasks, so it seemed like a shame to throw it away just because the other crucial part wasn't sufficient. The RAM was the weakest link.</span></p><p><span>So, instead of buying a new $1,800+ MacBook Pro in 2014, I replaced the RAM, which was cheap and easy to do. I spent $80 on 8GB of RAM and installed it myself. It's so insanely easy that anyone could do it, as there's no special skill or computer-know-how required. </span></p><p>Fast forward to 2016 and I felt my computer slow down as it ran Chrome, Slack, Tweetdeck, Photoshop, Spotify, Wunderlist, Messages, Preview, and an app called Skitch we use at Tech Insider to highlight certain aspects of photos.</p><p>So I bought more RAM - this time 16GB for $60 - and added it myself.</p><p>In total, I spent $140 to upgrade my MacBook Pro instead of buying a whole new one for $1,800 or more.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Antonio Villas-Boas/Tech Insider</span></p><p class="caption">Here I am, merrily switching out the RAM in my MacBook Pro.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>And, if ever I need more, I'll spend under $100 again to get even more RAM and it'll still be cheaper than buying a new one.</p><p>Don't get me wrong. Apple's latest crop of MacBook Pros it released in 2015 are excellent. For $2200, you can get a 13-inch MacBook Pro with a similar setup as mine: A super-powerful Core i7 processor and 16GB of RAM, and it should last most people a very long time. And it's thinner, lighter, and it has a sharper Retina display compared to my big, heavy MacBook Pro.</p><p>But the day will come when those 16GB of RAM won't be enough and you'll have to spend the big bucks to buy a new laptop much sooner than you could have because you can't replace the RAM. The Core i7 processor will still be fine, though.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Apple</span></p><p class="caption">MacBook Pros from 2013 onwards are thinner and have sharper Retina displays.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Apple is set to release <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/apple-macbook-pro-photo-leak-2016-5">brand new MacBook Pros</a> this year, with rumors pointing towards a refreshed design and a fancy row of keys you can customize to do whatever you want, like open certain apps or perform certain functions.</p><p>However, there are no rumors that Apple will reintroduce the removable bottom, and it's unlikely Apple will do so.</p><p>Buy a Windows laptop, you say? Some of those let you replace the RAM, you claim? Indeed, but I prefer the Apple's computer operating system, Mac OSX, more than I like Windows 10.</p><p>I'll cross the bridge of buying a new laptop when I get to it. But for now, my 2012 MacBook Pro still has a lot of life left in it.</p><p><em>Side note: I also replaced the original slow hard-drive that came with my MacBook Pro with a super-speedy solid-state drive (SSD). Apple's last great MacBook Pro was made four years ago - and there's one key reason for that

<p>What started as a supposedly fake device in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/everyone-is-going-nuts-over-a-leaked-video-of-a-secret-google-product--but-its-probably-a-publicity-stunt-2013-2">a leaked video</a>, wowed everyone when it turned out be a real laptop with a gorgeous high-resolution touchscreen and top-notch design.</p>
<p>The <keyword id="6374346" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chromebook">Chromebook</keyword> Pixel runs Chrome OS, an operating system that's based on the Chrome Web browser. Google's thinking behind Chrome OS is that we're increasingly doing most of our work online, so there's less of a need to use traditional apps and store our data on our computers. Instead, the Pixel relies almost entirely on online storage services for your files and apps that run in the browser.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The Chromebook Pixel starts at a whopping $1,300 (more on that later), and you can buy it <a href="https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=chromebook_pixel_wifi&amp;feature=device-featured#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDIwMiwibnVsbC13ZWJfaG9tZV81MDAwMDA1X2Nocm9tZVVTX2RldmljZXNfVVNfXzUwMDAwMDVfY2hyb21lVVNfM19wcm9tb18xMzYyNjA4ODQ0NjcxIl0.">directly from Google's Play Store online</a>.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The Pixel isn't for everyone. But I will tell you that as writer, it worked perfectly for me. </span></p>

<h2 class="p1">Not Just A Web Browser</h2>
<p>Nowadays, my computer is more of a typewriter than anything else. I use it to write and work, but my iPad and phone handle everything else.</p>
<p>Specifically, I write all my stories for Business Insider in a Web-based content management system. I keep track of all my story ideas and things to do in Evernote. I use Gmail for both work and personal email. I store most of my files and photos in Dropbox, not on my MacBook Air's 128 GB drive.</p>
<p>The common theme?</p>
<p>I do it all online.<br /> </p>

<p class="p1">So as someone who works primarily in a Web browser and relies heavily on Web-powered services, the Pixel and Chrome OS work perfectly for me. And I love that the computer came with a free TB of storage through Google Drive for three years. (Google Drive is an online file storage service that's almost exactly like Dropbox and functions largely as the Pixel's hard drive.)</p>
<p class="p1">Any <a href="http://daringfireball.net/2013/02/hammer_nail">criticism you've read</a> calling the Chromebook Pixel a "$1,300 Web browser" clearly comes from people who have never touched the machine before. When Google first launched Chrome OS that may have been true, but a lot has changed in the last two years.  <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Chrome OS has more of a classic desktop look and feel to it now, with a taskbar at the bottom that lets you launch web apps and a wallpapered background. It syncs with accessories like USB drives and digital cameras. It has internal storage so you can access files offline. And so on.</span></p>
<p class="p1">I haven't touched my MacBook in nearly two weeks. I never hit a snag with the Chromebook in that time. I wrote stories for BI. I kept up with Twitter using the excellent TweetDeck app for Chrome. I kept up with both my work and personal email. I did my taxes.</p>
<p class="p1">My only complaint is Spotify's Web version isn't ready for the public yet, so I couldn't listen to my music there. However, the Chromebook does give you access to Google Music, which lets you upload your songs to an online storage locker and stream them later. Google is also <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57570843-93/google-in-talks-with-labels-over-streaming-music-service-report/">reportedly working on its own Spotify-like streaming music subscription service</a>.</p>
<p class="p1">When you really think about it, there's not much many users need to do outside a web browser. I was certainly able to get away with it.</p>
<p class="p1">But let's also be clear. If you use your computer for anything else like photo editing, video editing, or email through Outlook, you won't like the Chromebook. If you do a lot of your work offline, you won't like the Chromebook. If you need to store a lot of files on your computer and not on a virtual online drive, you won't like the Chromebook. </p>
<p class="p1">However, I suspect the number of people who fall into those categories is dwindling.</p>
<p class="p1">My point is this: The Chromebook isn't a conventional machine; it's something new and different, a proof of concept that computing doesn't always have to take place on a traditional desktop running Windows or Mac OS X. The Web is now powerful enough for a lot of people. And it really does work on the Chromebook.</p>
<p class="p1">I know because it worked for me.</p>
<h2 class="p2">That Design! That Screen!</h2>
<p>The Pixel is a beautiful machine. </p>
<p>Google managed to create a computer with the same quality of build and attention to design I've come to expect from a MacBook without blatantly copying Apple's design as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-chromebook-design-2012-10">other manufacturers have been known to do</a>.</p>
<p>The screen is equally as impressive. This was my first time using a high-resolution display for an extended period of time, and I know I'm going to have trouble going back to the regular screen on my MacBook Air.</p>
<p>Photos and video look great, of course, but I was actually more impressed with the text. Like all Web browsers nowadays, Chrome automatically renders a website's text. It was the first thing I noticed when I booted up the Pixel.</p>

<p>But there is a big downside to a high-res display like the one on the Pixel. Several sites and web apps haven't changed their image resolutions to match the screen, so some stuff looks slightly blurry or pixelated. It's a minor thing, but something you'll definitely notice.</p>
<p>Finally, I found absolutely no need for the touch screen. Chrome OS mimics a traditional Mac or Windows 7 PC interface more than it does a touch-based OS like iOS or Android, so I never felt a natural incentive to reach out and touch the display. It works fine when you do, but the excellent (and accurate!) trackpad on the Pixel can handle it all. The touchscreen also lacks multitouch on everything except for Google Maps, which means you can't pinch to zoom or perform other gestures you're probably used to on touch devices.</p>
<h2>The Internet, Anywhere</h2>
<p>If you're willing to shell out an extra $150 for your Chromebook Pixel, you get the option to use its built-in 4G LTE wireless connection through Verizon. (If you're already spending this much on a computer, you might as well go for the LTE.)</p>
<p>LTE is one of the killer features of the Chromebook, and I can't believe it's not an option on all top-tier laptops by now. I was lucky enough to test the pixel while I was traveling, and the LTE connection saved me from blowing an extra $7.99 for an hour's worth of WiFi access at New York's LaGuardia airport. </p>
<p>Plus it's a much better option than draining your phone's battery by using it as a hotspot or carrying yet another device around in case you want to get online. It's one of those features you don't know you need until the time comes.</p>
<h2>The Pricing Problem</h2>
<p>Up until now, Google's Chromebook partners like Samsung and Acer have priced their devices to go easy on your wallet. They come <a href="https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=chromebook_acer_c710&amp;feature=device-featured#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDIwMiwibnVsbC13ZWJfaG9tZV81MDAwMDA1X2Nocm9tZVVTX2RldmljZXNfVVNfXzUwMDAwMDVfY2hyb21lVVNfMV9wcm9tb18xMzYyNjA4ODQ0NjcxIl0.">as cheap as $199</a>. So it's a bit odd that Google's own Pixel costs $1,300. That's not because it's a terrible computer, but at the end of the day it still offers less functionality than a regular Mac and PC. </p>
<p>As I say above, the Pixel worked well for me, but it's tough to ask a lot of people to shell out a premium price for a product that's not on feature parity with Macs and PCs. It's odd that Google didn't go for a sub-$1,000 price point, considering it has not problem losing money on its other hardware or asking its hardware partners to do the same. <span>I think $999 would've been the sweet spot.</span></p>
<p>The Pixel is a delightfully tempting machine, and if you fit into the category of user who does almost all his or her work on the Web, you'll love it.</p>
<p>But probably not at the price Google wants. </p>
