Now the name of HealthifyMe’s Singapore-based parent company HealthifyMe Pte Ltd appears in connection with Lang Capital Fund (LFC) owned by Kirill Androsov, businessman and a former aide of Russian President Vladimir Putin. A “compliance report” of Singapore-based watchdog AsiaCiti Trust, dated February 27 of 2018, mentions that at least four transactions made by Androsov’s LFC fund were marked as “high risk” due to their “PEP [Politically exposed Person]-related structure”. AsiaCiti has filed a similar <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/news/2021/oct/03/offshore-provider-accused-of-failing-to-follow-money-laundering-rules">report </a>in October 2014 as well, which named LFC. PEP adds an additional risk exposure for involvement in money laundering, bribery or corruption due to holding/having connections with high profile political roles or who has been entrusted with a prominent public function. A PEP status does not signify criminal behaviour. HealthifyMe claims that they were not aware of LFC’s PEP risk and connection with Putin. "At the time of taking investment from LCF — LCF was a publicly listed trust on the SGX [Singapore Exchange] and therefore was not wholly owned by any PEP. Singapore KYC requirements allowed HealthifyMe to take capital from any publicly listed trust without further investigation," the company said in a <a href="https://medium.com/@healthifyme/statement-from-healthifyme-35335d3cc88c" data-type="tilCustomLink">blogpost</a>, adding that LFC owns only 2% stake in the company. They are the only shareholders.</li><li>The LCF transaction under question included a payment that was made “for the subscription of 122,066 Series B2 Compulsorily Convertible and Non-Cumulative Preference Shares in HealthifyMe’s Singapore-based entity.</li><li>The company did not reveal the shareholding and directorship patterns to the directors of HealthifyMe Wellness Products and Services Private Limited between FY2015-2018.</li></ul>“Certain media reports on Pandora Papers have falsely claimed HealthifyMe Cofounder &amp; CEO Tushar Vashisht owning shell companies or Singapore hold-cos with connections to Politically Exposed Persons. We wish to clarify that these stories are inaccurate and have grossly misrepresented the facts,” a HealthifyMe Spokesperson told Business Insider. It will also be investing heavily behind its AI powered HealthifySmart Plans and intends to double its current engineering and design strength. It will furthermore be hiring senior leadership members across operations, marketing, HR and technology. From the rising demand for ‘immunity boosters’ to finally starting their exercise regimen to keep a check on lifestyle diseases, health has been the prime focus for most over the past few months. And this focus bodes well for health tech startup HealthifyMe.The startup, which turned operationally profitable in April 2020, is looking to clock $20 million in run-rate by January. In an interview with Business Insider, Tushar Vashisht, Co-founder &amp; CEO, HealthifyMe claims that the app continues to be India’s number one health app and shares their aim to become EBITDA profitable in the next 12 months. COVID-19 brought in profitability The focus on health during the pandemic has pushed the startup towards profitability. “Our topline and quarterly revenues have been growing and in fact, the last three quarters have been phenomenal,” said Vashisht. He added that they are looking at a revenue of 5 million dollars for the last quarter of the current financial year. Vashisht shared that during the lockdown, the sessions and engagement on the app improved dramatically. As reports started doing the rounds about comorbidities during COVID-19, people started paying more attention to their health issues. <div type="image" title="Capture" msid="78384973" hostid="261"></div> “One thing that COVID has taught us is that lifestyle diseases and obesity are death sentences in this environment. Their EBITDA has gone from -300% in 2018 to -40% as of August, which is why Vashisht is bullish on EBITDA profitability soon. What is driving the growth in paid subscribers? Healthifyme’s paying subscribers have doubled during lockdown, currently standing at 100,000 users. This smart plan accounts for 60% of their paying subscribers, which is why they are doubling down their investment on the AI platform. “Our low cost high margin plan is something that none of our competitors have. On an average, a customer loses 4.5 kgs weight within 180 days of joining HealthifyMe,” he shared. Investing heavily in technology For HealthifyMe, another thing that has worked is its UI/UX, which has often been appreciated by many. And Vashisht admits that most of their capital (they have raised $30 million to date) has gone into tech investments. “Half of the team of 150 people are in data science, engineering, and product who all work towards building and maintaining a high-quality app,” he said. He also added that they are currently hiring for various tech roles. Global revenues and dealing with competition HealthifyMe has expanded recently into South East Asia and launched in Malaysia and Singapore. That is already bringing in money for the company. “Of the $15 million run rate we are doing currently, $2.5 million is coming from outside India. We want to expand more into SouthEast Asia,” he said. But HealthifyMe also sees competition from a rising number of health tech <keyword id="6362513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups">startups</keyword>, including the very popular Cult.fit. However, Vashisht remains confident. He believes that they were among the first to secure the market in the digital space, and other startups will go through their growth curve before making a mark digitally. “We are already the market leaders. My revenue is possibly higher than other players because we have been in the digital space for seven years,” he said. COVID-19 has accelerated HealthifyMe’s path to profitability – CEO shares how paid subscribers doubled during lockdown

<ul><li>Tushar Vashisht, co-founder and CEO of <keyword id="2698623" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="HealthifyMe">Healthifyme</keyword>, spoke to Business Insider about the startup’s fast growing business. </li><li>Vashisht said that their India business is likely to turn profitable this year. </li><li>The app has roughly 9 million users from over 220 cities in India, has expanded to Malaysia and Singapore and is even contemplating a China entry.</li></ul>India has the third highest obesity rate in the world and this startup has taken it upon itself to help Indians lose weight. Healthifyme, which is the top rated Indian startup on Google Playstore, is also set to see its India business turn profitable this year. When Tushar Vashisht, co-founder and CEO, Healthifyme, came back to India nine years ago, he was one of the first ten members who were on the Aadhar team and went on to work in Project Strategy, working on the early adoption of Aadhar. Hit by the entrepreneurial bug, Vashisht, who had gained a lot of weight post his India return, knew that obesity in India was a problem he had to solve. In 2012, he launched Healthifyme for he had learnt that the biggest thing people needed was motivation. “We offered nutritionists and trainers to people as services, giving our users guidance and helping them stay motivated. What started as a small idea is a large business now. One and a half years ago, we launched Ria - our Artificial Intelligence assistant, which caters to 54% of the messages we get daily,” Vashisht told Business Insider. While a smart plan (with their AI assistant Ria) starts at ₹299, packages with a nutritionist start at ₹999. Today, they have roughly nine million users from 220+ cities and revenue-wise too they are growing strongly. “Our India business is likely to go profitable sometime this year,” said Vashisht. Even when they launched the app, their growth was very organic. “People loved the app, as they recognised its value – it helps them achieve their <keyword id="18974" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="fitness">fitness</keyword> goals. We very quickly became the highest rated app in India and also were the Editor’s Choice app on Google Playstore,” he said. What stuck with India users was the very fact that their app was very Indian in nature – focusing on nutrition needs in India. “We were obsessed about the product and consumers. We just focused on how can we create the best app out of India. The app that you see today is the 7th version of Healthifyme,” he said. It has also launched an AI assistant – Ria. But could fitness, which becomes a very personalised programme, be handled by an AI bot? “Humans can’t scale so much. At the end of the day, there is a limit to how many clients we can handle. Ria is born and built out of human data. Ria handles the basic work – answers the basic questions and issues, which then allows humans to take over the in-depth queries,” he said. Cumulatively, the app sees consumers track one billion exercises a day and also send in 50 million messages per day. Their success in India has also pushed it to go international. They have already launched in Malaysia and Singapore and have hired local nutritionists and trainers in the countries to ensure the app becomes a local one. “We are already the number one app in Malaysia and have lakhs of users in Singapore,” said Vashisht. As they expand their business, they are looking into newer territories like Indonesia and are also contemplating a China entry. We have already seen an extremely positive user response for our AI assistant Ria who people can speak to and seek health and fitness advice. In fact, according to <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>'s latest report 70% of its subscribers in India watch at least one film a week in India. Film viewing in the country is the<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/entertainment/news/sacred-games-2-kabir-singh-are-amongst-the-most-popular-views-on-netflix-india/articleshow/73028464.cms?src=hp_latest"> highest globally</a>. “It is interesting to see the impact of emerging social trends on Indian fitness levels. From following fad diets on the one hand to binging while streaming their favourite shows on the other, 2019 saw a lot of change in the way people approached fitness,” said Tushar Vashisht, co-founder and CEO, HealthifyMe. The survey also revealed that 70% of Indians completed their workout between 4 AM to 12 PM. While 40% opted for early morning workouts between 4 to 8 AM, 30% worked out between 8 AM to 12 PM. Meanwhile, 30% Indians preferred working out in the evenings between 4 to 8 PM. Increasingly diet conscious Indian also went ahead and tried some trending fad diets. While the most popular diet regimes were Dukan Diet by French nutritionist Pierre Dukan and Atkins diet by cardiologist Robert Atkins from USA, the top 3 superfoods in 2019 were green tea, chia seeds and turmeric. But according to Vashisht, one need not make radical changes to their lifestyle to achieve fitness. “Setting realistic goals, exercising regularly and being calorie conscious is a sure shot path to sustainable fitness as per our experience. A little bit of discipline is all that it takes,” he said. Binge watching on Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hotstar hit India's fitness goals in 2019

<ul><li>With the growing number of healthtech startups, India is in the need of a <keyword id="7507326" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="healthcare-data-privacy">healthcare data privacy</keyword> bill. </li><li>The Indian government has proposed a law that will bring the ownership of the data to the consumer. </li><li>Healthtech startups like <keyword id="1165142" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Practo">Practo</keyword>, Healthifyme too agree to the need of consumer ownership in the privacy bill.</li></ul>Over the years, with the growth of internet businesses, data privacy has gained even more importance. And when it comes to healthcare data, the importance of data privacy only increases. India has been toying with the idea of a healthcare data privacy bill since 2018, but it hasn’t come into effect yet. In March 2018, the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that it plans to set up a nodal body called National Digital Health Authority, that would enforce privacy and security measures for electronic health data in India. However, while the setting up of the regulatory body is awaited, there are multiple healthtech startups out there today with millions of users that have access to medical records. Recently, healthcare platform Practo released a report on India’s healthcare map citing “key consumer healthcare trends, concerns and behaviour.” The report was generated from the doctors appointment bookings made through their platform. An official statement from the company said the report was made “of hundreds of thousands of searches and appointments, by over 13 crore patients, across 50+ cities and 250+ specialities, in 2018.” But doesn’t that put the privacy of a patient at risk? Experts don't believe so as the anonymity of the user is still in place. Varun Dubey, VP, Marketing at Practo spoke to Business Insider and said “We feel this data itself is powerful as it shows the healthcare trends in the country. There is a real need for conversation around the issues in the sector,” he said. It’s similar to when Google releases a report about what people are searching for, it is quite generic as well as anonymised, he added. Experts from the healthcare industry too stress on the importance of such reports. “If without sharing the name of the individual, if the remaining quantifiable and quality data is shared for the purpose of innovation, I don’t think it’s a bad thing. It's like a necessary evil for the greater good of mankind,” Dr. Siddhant Bhargava, Co-founder, Fitness &amp; Nutritional Scientist - Food Darzee told Business Insider. So how does Practo, a company which has about 2.5 crore patients booking appointments through them, keep the data safe? “We have cared and given importance to data security and privacy for years now. Probably, we are the only ISO 27000 certified company in healthtech. As we work in other countries too, we don’t have to just comply with Indian laws but across many other countries. We have a lot of external and internal audits that take place. Our servers are Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (hipaa) compliant, even though India doesn’t need one. We also have a 256 bit encryption code, which is much stronger than security codes in Indian banks,” said Dubey. The Health Ministry is also looking to bring about a strict <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/economy-policy/india-to-be-first-to-protect-health-data-of-citizens-with-iron-clad-law-118053100126_1.html">law</a> that would give individuals the ownership of their data. It is the “consumer ownership” of data that makes the law important. While Dubey believes that not just healthcare but data privacy overall is utmost important, he said that the bill is moving towards giving more power to the consumer. Other healthcare startups too agree. Tushar Vashisht, co-founder and CEO of Healthifyme, said that it is the government’s mandate to figure out how strict the norms should be. “I would personally ask for the consumer to be king. They should define how they want to control or secure their data,” Vashisht told Business Insider.
