This phone is quite bewildering yet intriguing. That’s <keyword id="2951664" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="turing-phone">Turing Phone</keyword> for you. 
 Brainchild of <keyword id="2955006" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Syl-Chao">Syl Chao</keyword>, CEO of Turing Robotic Industries, Turing Phone is super-strong and intends to herald the next age of mobile devices. 
 
Chao claims that 2015 is the end of the smartphone and the beginning of the "cipher phone”. 
 
Apart from having a tough and secure hardware, Turing Phone is also secure in terms of software. 
 
Talking about hardware, the phone is made out of liquidmorphium, which is basically just really strong metal-like 1.5 times the tensile strength of titanium. 
 
Chao told Gizmodo that the real appeal in the Turing Phone lies in its design. 
 
The phone in dark purple and blue variant, known as Beowulf, draws inspiration for its colour palette from the actual story Beowulf. 
 
The liquidmorphium may give a hint that the phone would be crazily heavy but it's actually not too bad. 
 
The Turing Phone sports a 5.5-inch full HD screen and has outdated Snapdragon 801 processor and the pixel density and runs Android 5.1. The cameras may be appealing as it has 13MP rear and 8MP front camera. The phone runs on 3GB of RAM and is available with 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB options. 
 
However, the edges of the phone may garner some thumbs down as the corners are pointed and palm piercing, which can be a discomfort. 
 
This is not all. This Turing Phone has no 3.5-mm jack for headphones but is equipped with Bluetooth. 
 
And your microUSB cables will be of no use as Turing Phone uses a proprietary charger, using a MagSafe-like alternative. It has a fingerprint sensor, but it's actually on the left side of the phone. 
 
Chao told Gizmodo it’s more intuitive that way, and he may be right. 
 
The Turing Phone is waterproof, like IPX8 which is means under 10 feet of water for two hours thanks to nano-coating around the device. 
Meanwhile, from security point of view, Turing Phone gives end-to-end encryption and authentication but though an offline private key, which Turing believes, is the most secure communication you can have between two devices. 
 
Gizmodo reported that the real secure stuff that's happening on this phone can only really happen between two people using a Turing Phone. 
The pre-orders start from July 3 for $610 for a 16GB unlocked device that plays nice with AT&amp;T and T-Mobile.

Mi 10 is Xiaomi’s first high-end phone to launch in India after 2 years ⁠— and these are its improved features

Frustrated employees are publicly speaking up about what they describe as an uncomfortable and unsafe environment for people of color at the athletic-wear giant and a lackluster response to the current situation in the US.In response to protests and movements surrounding George Floyd's killing, Adidas responded publicly by issuing a statement on its <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CAzhEIDg36o/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Instagram</a> account on May 30 and <a href="https://twitter.com/adidas/status/1266594990559379457" target="_blank" rel="noopener">retweeting</a> an advertisement put out by Nike. Some Adidas employees, frustrated with the brand's response and lingering <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/19/business/adidas-diversity-employees.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">internal issues</a> at the company, have been protesting since Friday. This movement is led by Julia Bond, an assistant designer for Adidas Originals <keyword id="6362766" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="apparel">apparel</keyword> who has worked full time at the company for about a year. The protests are an effort to prompt Adidas to make internal and external changes to support Black employees and the Black community at large.Bond and others have sent emails to Adidas leadership regarding the brand's response to the state of affairs in the country as well as internal issues within Adidas. "My existence at this brand is praised as diversity and inclusion, but when I look around I see no one above or around that looks like me," Bond wrote in a June 3 email to Adidas' North American leadership, which she shared with Business Insider. "I can no longer stand for Adidas' consistent complacency in taking active steps against a racist work environment."<h2>Inside the internal deck sent to leadership</h2><keyword id="23820" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="footwear">Footwear</keyword> News first <a href="https://footwearnews.com/2020/business/opinion-analysis/adidas-black-employees-coalition-racial-injustice-1203001326/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> on the unrest at Adidas, which also involved the creation of a 13-member coalition representing over 100 employees from the company's North American and German headquarters.On June 2, the coalition sent a 32-page deck to North American leadership titled "Our State of Emergency," which outlined a series of requests from the company to recognize and respond to racial injustices, with hard deadlines for each. "We have the ability to change the course of history, our industry and our brand for generations," the deck, which was shared with Business Insider, said.Four demands, or "asks," were outlined in the document with various subsections. These asks include:<ul><li>Invest in Black employees.</li><li>Invest in Black communities.</li><li>Invest in the fight for racial justice and change for Black people.</li><li>Be accountable.</li></ul>The document gave timelines for certain asks as well. For example, the document requested a 31% representation of Black and Latinx people at every level of the company by December 31 and an end to the limiting of career advancement for Black employees immediately. The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/19/business/adidas-diversity-employees.html">previously reported</a> that fewer than 4.5% of the 1,700 Adidas employees at the Portland, Oregon, campus identified as black, according to internal employments figures from last summer. The deck also asked for an internal announcement of commitment to the requests by June 5 and a global media announcement by June 19. <h2>Employees are speaking out</h2>Adjacent to the coalition, other employees have shared similar stories of their experiences at Adidas on social media. Aaron Ture, a project manager at Reebok, which is owned by Adidas, posted his <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CBI4Peag0IF/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">experience with racism at Adidas on Instagram</a> and sent a letter to management on June 5 outlining his frustration with the company."We are an organization that exploits minorities, black, queer and so many others for commercial profit, without aiming to empower them at the workspace and in their own communities," Ture wrote in the letter, which was viewed by Business Insider. Ture, who is not specifically involved in the coalition, said all the movements have been working alongside one another in pursuit of the same goal.On Sunday, an <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CBHcsyQJrlF/">Adidas employee named Aric Armon took to Instagram</a> to share the story of what he described as a white colleague calling him a version of the N-word."They choose not to recognize the severity of their inward culture and how it reflects outwardly," Bond told Business Insider in an interview, in which she described an experience in the early months of her tenure at Adidas that involved a Confederate flag T-shirt design getting approved and sent to her team for inspiration.Bond, who said she is the lone Black employee on her team, said she wanted a public apology from Adidas and an acknowledgment of the company's problematic systems and culture that hurt Black employees. After the submission of the deck, Adidas leadership on Tuesday <a href="https://www.adidas-group.com/en/media/news-archive/press-releases/2020/message-adidas-board-creating-lasting-change-now/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> a three-step plan for change from the company. The brand committed to a $20 million investment into Black American communities over the next four years and outlined investments in university scholarships for Black employees and a commitment to filling 30% of all new positions in the US with Black and Latinx people.To Bond and Ture, the announcement was disappointing. "You're just treating the symptoms," Bond said. On its own, downloading and using users' address books under a deceptive pretext of 'security' would constitute a deceptive practice, even IF the company wasn't under order," he said, speaking in the abstract.Dina Srinivasan, a Yale <keyword id="6355470" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="law">Law</keyword> graduate who recently wrote a paper called "The Antitrust Case Against Facebook," argued that the company's behavior was potentially illegal "on the grounds that Facebook was deceiving consumers when it came to their data and privacy. This can be a violation of 3 things. (1) Federal antitrust laws. (2) Unfair competition laws which every state has a version of. (3) The FTC consent decree."That said, it's not yet clear whether the FTC will ultimately attempt to take any action against Facebook on this issue, and a spokesperson for the organization didn't respond to a request for comment."There are so many different potential violations at this point that I don't know that FTC will investigate this latest ... particularly because it's under a lot of pressure to act on the Cambridge Analytica [incident]," said Sally Hubbard, the director of enforcement strategy at the Open Markets Institute, a research and advocacy group that focuses on issues around corporate power.She explained that, even if this did constitute a violation, it would be difficult to investigate. "Once there's a revised consent decree in place, it will be hard for the FTC to go back and investigate any misconduct that came before it (depending on the terms of the negotiated agreement settling the claims - it likely will resolve all liability for violations up to the date it's agreed to)."<h2>The Silicon Valley firm could face trouble in Europe too</h2>In May 2018, the European Union started enforcing GDPR, its tough new data protection legislation. Facebook hasn't yet said if any of the affected users signed up in Europe after that data, but it seems extremely likely - in which case some believe Facebook may have fallen afoul of GDPR. "It is especially problematic because it was not just data of the user being verified that was ... processed, but the personal data of their contacts too," London-based data protection researcher and Alan Turing institute fellow Michael Veale said in an email."It might just have been 1.5m users that were directly affected, but considering the number of unique emails that were harvested and the network information linking them, the total number of individuals affected is likely in the hundreds of millions."He suggested there may have been multiple breaches of the law, including not informing users, and processing people's data for <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> purposes without informing them. "This could be construed as a general security breach, as Facebook were not aware their system was effectively compromised," he added.The Irish Data Protection Commission, which is responsible for regulating Facebook's data practices in the EU under GDPR, said it's now in contact with Facebook over the issue and is considering its next move. "We are currently engaging with Facebook on this issue and once we receive further information we will decide what steps to take," said Graham Doyle, the head of communications at the Irish DPC.<h2>The question of intent</h2>Julian Sanchez, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, discussed the possibility that Facebook had potentially violated the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act - which would veer into criminal territory. "It's an offense under 18 USC 1030 to, among other things, intentionally exceed authorized access to a protected computer. A 'protected computer' is, for practical purposes, any computer connected to the Internet," he said. "So with respect to Facebook's access to users' e-mail contacts, the relevant questions are whether there's any viable argument that it was 'authorized,' which seems like a very hard sell when it's represented as being specifically for the purpose of authentication, and if not, whether the access in excess of authorization was intentional."He added: "If we were talking about a rapidly-corrected coding mistake that had removed language about scraping the user's contacts, you'd have a plausible case for saying this was access in excess of authorization, but not intentional. But that becomes more difficult to buy the longer they were doing it."Facebook says that the action was purely unintentional - that it previously notified users that it would be accessing their contacts, but a change inadvertently stripped that warning out. Such an argument would be a defense under the CFAA."Can they plead incompetence? In principle, though boy is that embarrassing," Sanchez said. "You'd need to look through internal correspondence to see whether anyone noticed the issue and Facebook decided not to fix it."Got a tip? Facebook may have broken the law by harvesting 1.5 million users' email contacts, experts say

We gave our <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/satoshi-nakamoto-person-of-the-year-2013-12">Person of the Year award</a> for 2013 to Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin.
We know some of you laughed. 
If you did, you may want to read on. It's becoming increasingly clear that Satoshi's creation has the potential to change how much of commerce itself works, and for reasons not even many Bitcoin fans realize.
By many accounts, Satoshi came up with a real-world solution to an actual, longstanding computer science paradox, known as the double-spend problem, or the Byzantine General's problem (<a href="http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/people/lamport/pubs/pubs.html#byz">the professor who named it thus explains why he did so here</a>). The dilemma is how to send and receive money online without the need for a trusted third party, like PayPal, ensuring that the same digital credit standing in for the amount being exchanged isn't being spent twice. 
In the real world, this problem gets avoided with cash, which is quite difficult to counterfeit. In practice, digital counterfeiting is much easier. 
Satoshi's solution was what has become known as the blockchain: a ledger of all transactions owned and monitored by everyone but ultimately controlled by none. It's like a giant interactive spreadsheet everyone has access to and updates to confirm each digital credit is unique. 
It is this technology that programmers are now working to deploy for uses that go far beyond Bitcoin. Ironically, Satoshi does not appear to have been looking to solve this problem when he created Bitcoin. But his design for the blockchain, <a href="bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf">which he spelled out in his 2008 Bitcoin spec paper</a>, has profound implications.
"For the first time, two people can exchange a piece of digital property, without any prior relationship, and in a secure way, over the Internet," Jeff Garzik, one of Bitcoin's core developers now employed by payment processor BitPay, told BI. "As a computer scientist, and in computer science in general, when you talked about building distributed systems, there tended to be a purely theoretical view about how computers would talk to each other, how to keep them coordinated. Satoshi and the blockchain really solved that problem in an elegant and unexpected way.

"I don't think the computer science community has really caught up yet."
The breakthrough means that theoretically any act of commerce on the web can be decentralized and stripped of a controlling authority. 
Perhaps the most straightforward example of a post-Bitcoin service currently using Satoshi's blockchain is called <a href="http://www.proofofexistence.com">Proof Of Existence</a>. Created by Manuel Araoz, a 23-year-old developer in Argentina, the site allows you to upload a file to certify that you had custody of it at a given time. Neither its contents, nor your own personal information are ever revealed - rather, all the data in the document gets digested into an encrypted number. Proof Of Existence is actually built on top of the Bitcoin blockchain, (there's a 0.005 BTC fee), so <a href="https://getaddr.bitnodes.io/">the thousands of computers on that network</a> have now collectively verified your file.

A slightly more politicized application of the blockchain is Namecoin. Currently, international non-profit ICANN governs nearly all top-level web address domains, like .com. But three years ago, engineers developed something called Namecoin that serves as a new domain name system for registering web addresses that end in .bit. In this case, instead of ICANN controlling the domain name system, you and all the other people in the Namecoin system control the domain names. Again, blockchain technology makes it so that something which previously required a centralized authority can now be managed via community. 
At this point, payment processors like Western Union probably have the most to fear from blockchain competition, according to Gil Luria, a managing director at Wedbush Securities covering financial technology. You may have heard this before, but Luria explained why the blockchain is the true threat: Most processors currently use hub-and-spoke models, he said, which are able to charge fees for crossing jurisdictions, and for smaller transaction amounts. Decentralizing and distributing the network gets rid of all that.
"It's a much more competitive business model," Luria told us by phone recently. "Instead of paying 5 to 10% in fees to Western Union, you're going to be 2 to 3%, possibly even less.

A startup called Ripple represents the most active threat to the mega processors. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ripple-profile-2014-3">We profiled Ripple, and the group that created it, last month</a>. Computers all familiar with each other on Ripple's network mutually agree on changes to its blockchain (Ripple calls it a ledger). This allows transactions to be processed instantly, and without a third party. It's actually even faster than the Bitcoin network, because everyone using the Ripple ledger gets their own copy of the whole ledger, in contrast with the nodes on the Bitcoin network all sharing a single one. 
The blockchain is even stalking credit card companies: In an interview in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-completely-debunks-all-the-arguments-for-bitcoin-2014-3">Goldman Sachs' note on Bitcoin last March</a>, Fred Ehrsam, the CEO of mega Bitcoin payment processor Coinbase, observed that a Bitcoin-like payment network would solve the problem of having your credit card info stored with a big box retailer like Target. Even sending money through Venmo, the app that lets you text your friends for picking up dinner that one time, still takes five days to clear.
Of course, it's possible the existing financial behemoths could adopt their own blockchain technologies. In the same Goldman note, Goldman information technology services analyst Roman Leal writes that, "just as a flurry of new entrants - such as Square, Groupon, and PayPal - encouraged payment networks and payment processors to develop a mobile payments strategy, we expect traditional payment players to develop digital currency strategies." 
Two groups, BitShares and Ethereum, are hoping to blockchain-ify...everything. BitShares founder and CEO Daniel Larimer has his eye on <a href="http://bitshares.org/exchange/">stock exchanges</a>, <a href="http://bitshares.org/voting/">voting</a>, <a href="http://bitshares.org/music/">music distribution</a>, and on. He calls such futuristic entities distributed autonomous corporations. To use the music example, Larimer envisions artists having the ability to issue shares in their own songs, incentivizing fans to spread the tune far and wide to increase returns. "We give power to shareholders without centralizing in any way, because we've eliminated the barriers to entry for starting a company," Larimer told us at the "Inside Bitcoins" conference recently. 
Incidentally, he said having a conference called "Inside Bitcoins" was akin to having a conference called "Inside AltaVista." 
There are of course loads of technological and regulatory hurdles that must still be overcome for all of this to materialize. And there are plenty of things that could be reset on a blockchain. But investors don't seem too concerned: Marc Andreessen (who also invests in Business Insider) and Fred Wilson are betting big in this space.

In a recent blog post, Wilson <a href="http://avc.com/2014/04/the-mobile-downturn/">equated</a> the breakthrough Blockchain represents to the web browser and social media. He specifically refers to this moment as the "blockchain cycle."
Our 2004 fund was built during social. Our 2008 fund was built during social and the emergence of mobile. Our 2012 fund was built during the mobile downturn. And our 2014 fund will be built during the blockchain cycle. I am looking forward to it.
"I think we see every week now somewhere between one and three entrepreneurs come in with blockchain ideas," Andreessen Horowitz's Chris Dixon told BI. "There's definitely some momentum behind it."
We'll leave you with an extremely futuristic example of how the blockchain could be deployed. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu4PAMFPo5Y&amp;feature=youtu.be">In a talk given last fall at the Turing festival</a>, Mike Hearn, a former Google employee who quit his job to work full-time on Bitcoin, laid out this scenario: A 20-something Scottish girl named Jen wants to meet up with her friends downtown. She doesn't own a car - no one does in the future - so she dials up a cab through a network Hearn calls TradeNet.

Jen's node then ranks the bids and presents them to Jen based on criteria including price but also things like whether she's used that cab before, and what other people have said about it. All of this is done on a distributed, blockchain system, so no centralized taxi company needs to manage the orders.
The blockchain, by the way, will have improved that recommendation process, Hearn says. Currently many recommendation systems at places like Yelp or Seamless say they use your social network to help you choose services. In practice, they end up producing what amount to spam reviews, since it's unlikely a friend you trust will have reviewed the same service you're looking into. Hearn says cryptography - without which Bitcoin couldn't exist - has helped reduce spam by providing more authoritative, useful authentication.
In this future scenario, the roads on which Jen is driving will have also become autonomous actors, doing trades with the car on TradeNet. They can submit bids to the car about how much they're going to charge to use them. If she's in a hurry, Jen can choose a road that's a bit more expensive but which will allow her to get into the city faster. 
Awesome, right? 
"This is possible because of Bitcoin," Hearn says. "Bitcoin has no intermediaries, therefore there's really nothing to stop a computer from just connecting to the internet and taking part all by itself. All you need to do to instantiate a Bitcoin wallet is generate a large random number." 
Hearn gives other examples of where the TradeNet could be deployed, like buying fruit and vegetables, or units of computation time if you're buying clouds services. Any transactions that are fast, lightweight and commoditized - which the current system, Hearn says is bad at - could be done so much better on the Blockchain.

With a handful of exceptions like Proof Of Existence, it's still too early to see fully functional applications of blockchain technology. Ripple, for instance, is still courting financial institutions that would benefit from using its payment rail. Bitcoin's main developers are <a href="http://letstalkbitcoin.com/blockchain-2-0-let-a-thousand-chains-blossom/#.U0vVC-Zg6Go">still figuring out ways to tweak its protocol without bringing down the entire network.</a> And of course there remain a host of outstanding regulatory issues that will need to get sorted out before massive expansion of these proposed services can occur.
The blockchain helps end the debate about what Bitcoin is. Previously there's been discussion about whether Bitcoin is a currency, or commodity, or technological protocol. There are good arguments for each categorization, but each is unsatisfying in some way.
Now we know why this debate is so unsatisfying. Bitcoin represents a novel form of organization - a blockchain-based enitity - that's not quite like anything seen before it.
