<ul><li>More deserving <keyword id="6360075" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Languages">languages</keyword> in India like <keyword id="56792" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tulu">Tulu</keyword> want to enter the list of <keyword id="6656444" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Scheduled-languages">scheduled languages</keyword>. </li><li>The demands quote the preamble of India promising equality of status and opportunity </li><li>Entering the list will widen the opportunities for these languages to grow and enrich themselves. </li></ul>The <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/opinion/op-ed/a-case-for-including-tulu-in-the-eighth-schedule/article30496165.ece">Tulu-speaking population of the country has been urging the government</a> to expedite the steps to list it under schedule eight. They are concentrated in the two coastal districts of Karnataka and Kasaragod district of Kerala. As per the census, there are as many as 18,46,427 of them. Here we discuss the advantages of getting listed under schedule eight and the wider implications of the issue. India is a land of cultural and linguistic diversity As per 2001 census, about 30 of Indian languages are being spoken by over a million people each. Besides this list, around 122 languages are spoken by not less than 10,000 people. There are also 1,599 other languages, most of which are considered as dialects belonging to some specific regions. For quite long, there have been demands to include many of these languages into the list of scheduled languages. List of scheduled languages in India At present 22 of Indian languages are listed in the eighth schedule including Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Santali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Fourteen of these languages were already listed under the eighth schedule when the constitution of India came to force in 1950. In 1967, Sindhi was added. In 1992, Konkani, Manipuri and Nepali were included. In 2003, the four remaining languages including Dogiri, Bodo, Maithali, and Santhali were included. Demands to include more languages under eighth schedule For so long, the speakers of many other languages have been demanding that their language be included under Schedule 8. <a href="https://mha.gov.in/sites/default/files/EighthSchedule_19052017.pdf">As many as 37 languages</a> including Angika, Banjara, Bazika, Bhojpuri, Bhoti, Bhotia, Bundelkhandi, Chhattisgarhi, Dhatki, Garhwali (Pahari), Gondi, Gujjari, Ho, Kachachhi, Kamtapuri, Karbi, Khasi, Kodava (Coorg), Kok Barak, Kumaoni, Kurak, Kurmail, Lepcha, Limbu, Mizo, Magahi, Mundari, Nagpuri, Nicobarese, Himachali, Pali, Rajasthani, Sambalpuri, Shaurseni, Siraiki, Tenyidi, and Tulu -- are currently want the government to include them under schedule eight. Benefits of getting included under the eighth schedule When a language gets scheduled status in India, it comes to enjoy some inevitable advantages. Some of the significant advantages enjoyed by scheduled languages include <ul><li>It will become mandatory for the government to spare the efforts to develop the scheduled language so that it grows and evolves into an effective means of communication.</li><li>A scheduled language will come to be considered as an official language of the nation.</li><li>When included in the eighth schedule, Sahitya Academy will start recognizing the language and the books of the language will be translated in other languages recognized in India. </li><li>MPs and MLAs can start converse in this language in state assemblies and parliament. </li><li>Candidates will be able to write the competitive exams like Civil Services Exams conducted in the All India level in a scheduled language.</li><li>Including a language under schedule eight will place it on equal footing with other official languages which will provide equal status and opportunity to the said language.</li></ul>Wider implications to discuss As per the constitution, it is mandatory for the UPSC to include scheduled language as one of the qualifying papers - in addition to English. The RBI (Reserve Bank of India) must start including the scheduled language to talk of the denomination in currency notes. Therefore, there have also been some practical administrative difficulties noticed in listing more languages under schedule eight. However, India is a country of diverse languages and cultures and the constitution is committed to protecting and promoting the equality of status and opportunity to all people and all languages. The republic cannot turn a deaf ear to the demands mounting up from the speakers of the languages spoken by minority.

Tulu language: Demands On The Rise To Include More Languages Like Tulu In Eighth Schedule

<ul><li><keyword id="252164" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Guru-Prasad">Guru Prasad</keyword> launched a new keyboard named <keyword id="6683181" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ka-Naada">Ka-Naada</keyword> which supports several languages based on the Brahmi Lipi and groups letters according to phonetics. </li><li>The keyboard also has more keys on it than the Qwerty keyboard, including some ancient alphabets from Indian languages that has been lost in time. </li><li>Prasad believes that the digital world may keep the Indian languages from dying if children can use the keyboard to learn and take forward the languages.</li></ul> In April, Guru Prasad launched a new keyboard named <a href="https://ka-naada.com/">Ka-Naada</a> which supports several languages based on the Brahmi Lipi. It is a unique product that groups letters according to phonetics which makes it highly intuitive and user friendly. It is available in both, hardware and software and it is entirely made in <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>. It is available in two colours, black and blue, and will cost about ₹1,900, if you pre order it. The keyboard is compatible with all the devices and is available in multiple languages including Devanagari, Kannada, Gujarati, Gurumukhi, Malayalam, Tulu and Oriya. Once the user knows any one of these languages, the keyboard allows the user to type in their mother tongue and has the ability to change the typed alphabets into about seven Indian languages by just using a switch on the keyboard. It will soon be available in Brahmi-based foreign languages too, including Malay, Sinhalese, and Nepalese. “My mother tongue is Tulu. That script got lost in 1840, within 20 years of its origin, due to the introduction of Kannada typeset. I was able to revive it from the palm scripts and now, I have made a keyboard in my mother tongue,” Prasad told Business Insider. Prasad has been working on this keyboard since 2009. “My everything, I left behind,” he said. “It was in December when I thought - what am I doing?! None of the marketing agencies took our product because it was too big, with too many languages,” he added. Prasad earlier had plans of making a square keyboard that could be used with a single hand, since he believed it was more beneficial.  The placing of alphabets on the desi keyboard was done by Dr Sastry based on phonetics. Sastry was a linguistic teacher at the Hindu University of America where Prasad was volunteering. They both observed how difficult it is for Indian students in USA to learn their native languages and they tried to understand why it was so. When they saw that it was the Qwerty keyboard that was making them learn their own language through English, they decided to make a desi version. Sastry developed nine combinations of swara-vyanjanas based on how they are spoken and strategically placed them on the keyboard. “The Qwerty keyboard is spelling based but ours is pronunciation based, which makes it even more suitable to the Indian languages,” Sastry told Business Insider. “I have been working on it since 2004. I am stressing on the fact that we do not need the English language to type our own languages on a keyboard,” Sastry added. The keyboard also has some ancient alphabets from Indian languages that are not used anymore and have been lost in time. The English language has about half the alphabets that Indian languages have. Therefore, this desi keyboard also has more keys on it. KaNaada has received funding from several associations like Kannada Praadhikaara and Government of Karnataka, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Centre of Excellence, IISc. They received their US patent in 2017 and are hoping to get the Indian one soon. The keyboard was first introduced to the Indian children in a Kannada class in the US. When Prasad felt confident about how comfortable the students were with it, he then introduced it in India. While children get really comfortable with it, adults find it difficult since they are used to the qwerty keyboard. Prasad is planning to create another keyboard which is ergonomically similar. He is also planning to design his product in such manner that the same keyboard can also be used by the visually impaired. “The visually impaired do not want to be treated differently. They don’t like it,” he pointed out. And to make things work faster, Prasad has a team in place in his Kanaada Phonetics Private Limited, which is not even one year old yet. Prasad believes that “the digital world might be the key to enable our languages and also co-exist with English and others” and this may happen if the children can use this keyboard to learn and take forward the languages. Prasad’s team has been able to install the keyboard along with computers in many rural schools. Some of the schools where his team got to work at had never even seen a computer before. A lot of volunteers from NGOs and students from overseas, working under the Youth Ambassador programme, helped Prasad and his team put things in place for a project that they believe will help Indian children connect with their counterparts from across the world. “The project was completed exactly a year after I came to India. And my favourite part is that my father, who passed away three months ago, wanted it installed in schools and we managed to do what he wanted,” Prasad said.

She was 78 years old. The cause of her death is not yet known. One of the immortal voices of the South Indian film industry, Vani <keyword id="25837" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="jayaram" source="Orion">Jayaram</keyword> rendered songs in 19 languages. She was living at her Haddows Road home in Chennai. Her husband Jayaram passed away in 2018. Since then, she had been living alone. Vani Jayaram won three National Awards and sang more than 10,000 songs in 19 languages, including in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, Gujarati, Odia, Marathi, Haryanvi, Assamese, Tulu and Bengali. She had won state government awards from Odisha, <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh. Born at Kalaivani in Vellore to a traditional Tamil Iyengar family of classical musicians, Jayaram was initiated into the world of music by Ranga Ramanuja Iyengar and later, Kadalur Srinivasa Iyengar, T.R. Balasubramanian, and R.S. Mani. She was employed at the State Bank of India and she quit the job after she started training for Hindustani music under <keyword id="16351223" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ustad-abdul-rahman-khan" source="Orion">Ustad Abdul Rahman Khan</keyword> of the <keyword id="148281" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="patiala-gharana" source="Orion">Patiala Gharana</keyword>. Jayaram was regarded as one of the very few South Indian singers who had an in-depth knowledge in Hindustani classical music and was at ease in belting out Hindi, Gujarati and Haryanvi songs. Her first music album was a duet with <keyword id="319138" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kumar-gandharva" source="Orion">Kumar Gandharva</keyword> composed by Vasant Desai. Dubai, May 9 () An Indian teenager here has recorded songs in over 20 languages, including Arabic, to spread awareness on the COVID-19, saying music has always been her choice for effective communication, according to a media report on Saturday. Suchetha Satish's songs advise the people to keep distance, maintain cleanliness and practice hand washing regularly, the Khaleej Times reported on Saturday. Satish, who hails from Kerala, released her first coronavirus awareness song on March 16 in English, titled 'Say No To Panic', the daily reported. Since then, 14-year-old Satish, who holds the world record for singing in most number of languages in a concert, has recorded the awareness songs in Malayalam, Bengali, Arabic, Kannada, Tulu, Konkani, Marathi, Gujrati, Rajasthani, Sindhi, Himachali, Odiya, Manipuri, Nepali, Urdu, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Telugu, Kashmiri and Sanskrit. Her songs in Malayalam, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and Assamese were used by the Kerala government in its 'Break the Chain' campaign, the newspaper reported. Satish, who also holds the world record for the longest live concert by a child, calls herself a COVID-19 warrior. "Music has always been my language of effective communication. With help from my mother Sumitha, I did the lyrics and composed the whole song. My mum helped me with the editing of the video. I took inputs from my father to give authentic information and thus the song was made. The recording was done in my home studio," said Satish, a standard X student of Dubai Indian High School. The lyrics for the songs were penned by her mother, the music was composed by Prashanti Chopra and the orchestration by Denzil Tom, her father told the newspaper. Emirati poet Dr Shihab Ghanem translated the lyrics in Arabic. She said the entire process of making the song took about four days. She said one of the first few songs on COIVD-19 was recorded in Malayalam, which was well appreciated. This inspired her to record the song in other Indian languages. INDIND
