The Tulsi lake, one of the seven reservoirs supplying drinking water to Mumbai, overflowed on Thursday following heavy rains in the city and suburbs, a civic official said. Earlier this month, the Powai lake, another reservoir located in the heart of Mumbai, started overflowing, but its water is not used for drinking purpose. The Tulsi lake, located in the densely forested Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), started overflowing at 1.25 am on Thursday, the official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (<keyword id="48434" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bmc" source="Orion">BMC</keyword>) said. This is expected to bring relief to citizens facing 10% water cut since the beginning of this month. Tulsi is the smallest of the seven reservoirs that supply potable water to Mumbai and has a storage capacity of 8,046 million litres. The city gets 18 million litres of water from the lake every day. "The catchment area of the lake has been receiving rainfall in the last few days, as a result of which the lake overflowed today," the civic official said, adding the water body has overflowed a little earlier this year compared to 2022. When the <keyword id="18079916" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tulsi-lake-overflows" source="Orion">Tulsi lake overflows</keyword>, its water goes into the Vihar lake, which is also located in the SGNP. In the 24 hours that ended 8 am on Friday, Mumbai, its eastern suburbs and western suburbs received an average rainfall of 31 mm, 45 mm and 61 mm respectively, an official said. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the useful water stock in seven reservoirs supplying water to the metropolis has increased to 10.88%, which was 10.51% on this day in 2022 and 17.81% in 2021. The seven reservoirs - Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Vihar and Tulsi, located in Mumbai, Thane and Nashik districts - provide 3,800 MLD water to Mumbai everyday. Incessant rainfall has hit the road traffic in some parts of the city due to waterlogging, while the local train operations largely remained unaffected. Commuters have complained that the Andheri subway, located between Andheri and Jogeshwari stations of the Western Railway was closed for traffic due to waterlogging. Traffic slowed down in parts of the suburbs as well. The suburban train services of the Central Railway and Western Railway were normal, the railway authorities said. However, commuters on some routes, including the Central Railways' Harbour line that operates services between Panvel and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), complained of delay in train operations in the morning hours. A spokesperson of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) said that despite rains, none of its buses had to be diverted to alternative routes. In its warning issued at 7.30 am, the <keyword id="6366970" type="General" weightage="40" keywordseo="imd" source="Orion">IMD</keyword> predicted moderate to intense spells of rain at isolated places in Mumbai and neighbouring Thane and Palghar districts over the next three to four hours. "For the next 24 hours, the IMD Mumbai has predicted moderate rainfall in the city and its suburbs with the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated places," a civic official said. As per the BMC's disaster management cell, Mumbai reported 40 incidents of tree fall or tree branches fall, 13 of short circuit in the 24-hour period ending 8 am. Seven incidents, in which part of houses collapsed, were also reported. The ceiling of a bathroom collapsed on Thursday night, in which a 35-year-old person lost his life at Kandivali East, while a wooden loft fell at a house in slum-dominated Ganapat Patil Nagar in Dahisar that led to death of a one-and-half-year old child, it said.
