A swipe in the right direction. Yes getting a date is as easy as that in the age of smartphones. Smartphone apps have changed the dating landscape and men are relying on their phones to get a perfect match. Long gone are chat rooms or blind dates where your friends would set you up. Today, it’s all about swiping left or right on your smartphone. It’s easier than booking a cab after a lazy evening at the bar. 
 
 “People are comfortable in our app even when surrounded by strangers, simply because they trust that there won't be any creeps on the app. This confidence is uniquely empowering and that's what enables high engagement on dating apps these days,” said <keyword id="316899" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sachin-Bhatia">Sachin Bhatia</keyword>, CEO and Co-Founder of <keyword id="1745655" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="TrulyMadly">TrulyMadly</keyword>, a <keyword id="1095218" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dating-app">dating app</keyword>. 
 “We aren't like Western dating apps, which are primarily for 'hook-ups'. Nor are we your traditional desi matrimonial sites. We've tried to remove the taboo from the term 'dating' in the Indian world by associating it with safety and compatibility and have seen a great response from users in metros and even small towns,” added <keyword id="4943" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhatia">Bhatia</keyword>. 
 Unlike the West, where one night stands is not seen as a social taboo, in India, people browsing these apps, often look for a long time commitment. “Hook up and casual dating apps are mushrooming but there are millions of singles who crave something more meaningful and long-term. In fact, as we interact with more and more of our users, we realize that men and women equalled crave love and companionship and ‘casual relationships’ don’t fulfill that need. Woo has been conceptualised and created especially for such people,” said <keyword id="1964927" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sumesh-Menon">Sumesh Menon</keyword>, CEO and Co-founder, Woo. 
 
Most apps in India keep safety and security as their primary concerns. 
 
“We have a Trust Score for every user, based on the amount of information a user volunteers to share with the app. This impacts the matches she/he receives. In fact, we also have manual verification systems in place to double check profiles. Users can only engage in conversation or even see each other’s names once both of them have expressed an interest/ liked the other. All information about a user is self-updated and the existing user can anytime update or remove any or all information as per their personal preferences. If they deactivate their account, all their information gets wiped off too,” Bhatia added. 
 
Meanwhile, 9 out of 10 women in the age-group between 18 and 25 prefer keeping a dating app on their phone, while 7 out of 10 in the age group between 26 and 35 prefer the same. 
 
“An app brings the multiplier effect and widens the pool, beyond anything that was possible before. Secondly, because it is on a private smartphone device, it gives users the convenience of having uninterrupted, one-on-one conversations and really getting to know one another. And finally, it has given people complete independence over the kind of person they choose to be with. The decision is now taken by the individual, and not by anyone else,” added Menon. 
 
Dating apps are like a free market economy for relationships in general and sex in particular. You might not find your dream girl among your acquaintances, but these apps ensure more exposure. Also, if we have the freedom to choose everything, then why not have the freedom to choose the right partner.

Dating in 2015 has not only evolved, but has also become more mechanical, cue to the numerous <keyword id="1557997" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="dating-apps">dating apps</keyword> being abundantly available on the internet. 
 
The rise in the popularity and the usage of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Tinder-owner-Match-Group-prices-IPO-at-12-a-share-at-low-end-of-range/articleshow/49839413.cms">Tinder</a> in the country is a clear message that today's youth are ditching the traditional ways of ‘meeting someone’ and are instead relying on technology to do most of the work for them. 
 
This has also led to the rise of a host of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/I-spent-a-week-using-five-of-the-most-popular-dating-apps-heres-the-one-I-unexpectedly-liked-the-most/articleshow/49519391.cms">dating apps</a> wishing to be the Indian alternatives to <keyword id="1738241" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tinder">Tinder</keyword> (the most popular ones being <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Cupid-goes-online-Find-love-Truly-Madly-style/articleshow/47285094.cms">TrulyMadly</a>, Woo, Hinge etc) but unfortunately these apps have very little features that can be called unique or haven’t been ‘inspired’ from Tinder. 
 With the aim to make itself distinct from all the other apps thriving in the burgeoning mobile dating space in India, Delhi- based startup Thrill Group launched <keyword id="3075946" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Frivil">FRIVIL</keyword>- a new age dating app that claims to engage the youth and give them an ‘edgy’ experience. Targeting users between the age groups of 18-24, FRIVIL has been reportedly adding over 1,000 people on a daily basis. 
 
The only problem however is, it hasn’t quite gotten its plot quite right. 
 
FRIVIL is based around a gamefied competition, where they pit two users’ profile pictures against each other. Everyone else gets the responsibility of deciding who they find more attractive. In short, the prettier you look, the more votes you get. 
 
Then, after that is done, depending on how many people like a particular profile picture (not the same as ‘liking’ a person) in comparison to the profile picture (again, not a person) they were up against, matches are made every 9 pm. 
 According to the co-founder and CEO <keyword id="2301694" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Josh-Israel">Josh Israel</keyword>, the reasoning behind this gamefied competition on FRIVIL is because the app wants to ‘shun’ the idea that computers are smart enough decide who’s a creep and instead just lets users decide who they find more attractive and matches up people in the same ‘league’. 
 
While the makers have gone all out on social media in promoting FRIVIL, which included tying up with MTV and running contests, one of which allowed the winners an exclusive chance to get a brand new profile picture shot by a photographer to use on FRIVIL, a lot of women have raised their voice against the rampant objectification and superficiality that the app promotes. 
 
Varnika Kundu, for example is of the opinion that the app which effectively is just a ‘Hot or not’ question in disguise, shamelessly advertises the concept of shallowness. 
 
Akshita on the other hand thinks it’s quite unfair that an app solely judges how a person is based on how they are reflected in the mirror. 
 
Israel however finds nothing wrong with the way the app is designed and thinks everyone needs to instead ‘take things lightly.’ 
 
When quizzed about whether he thinks that today’s youth are superficial in nature while looking for a date or a relationship, Israel says that judgment and superficiality are inherent in all of us and FRIVIL is the first app to admit that instead of playing ‘safe,’ like the other apps in the market. 
 
“People like to say that they aren’t superficial at all or they don’t judge anyone based on their appearance or looks, but the fact of the matter is, especially when you are looking for someone to hook up with or date, that is exactly what you will notice first- whether it’s in a bar, or on any dating app. Even on Tinder, I’m almost certain most people are swiping instead of tapping then swiping – meaning they are initially judging based on looks. We just put in the forefront and use it to match people up,” he adds. 
 
When further prodded about whether he thinks FRIVIL would favour only the attractive, Israel states that the app and its algorithms don’t favour anyone. "Everyone has an equal chance," he adds. 
 
What he forgets to mention however this- ‘provided they look good, ofcourse.’

At a time when online fashion retailer <keyword id="319719" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Myntra">Myntra</keyword> is planning to shut down its website and concentrate only on mobile app mode of operations, the big question of the hour is : Would online retailers do away with their websites and focus on mobile-app only? 
 
After speaking to half-a-dozen startups, The Economic Times found that the new entrants plan to channel efforts and marketing dollars entirely on their mobile applications. 
 Among the ones ET spoke to are local services startups Zopper, Doormint and LocalOye; online-first restaurants Holachef and Spoonjoy; online dating startup Truly-Madly; and on-demand grocery delivery firm <keyword id="2809732" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PepperTap">PepperTap</keyword>. 
 
Large eCommerce firms such as Flipkart, Snapdeal, Quikr, Ola and Myntra get 70-80% of their traffic from mobile devices, a key factor influencing Internet companies and startups to consider being app-only platforms, the ET news report confirms. Flipkart and its fashion affiliate Myntra began the trend by shutting their mobile websites and relying instead on their apps to encourage repeated use and to push targeted discounts and notifications. 
 Yet exception is there to prove the rule. Quikr is still not keen on shutting down web operation. "Mobile is clearly the most important channel for us, but for our business, which has a lot of customers in rural India, the browser is important as well," founder and CEO <keyword id="1063538" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pranay-Chulet">Pranay Chulet</keyword> told the financial daily. 
 
India's smartphone market grew 54% to 140 million devices last year, and is expected to reach 651 million in four years and be the largest mobile-first Internet market, according to Cisco. 
 
As a reflection of this market growth, Ola, India's largest taxi-hailing company, saw cab bookings through its mobile app double in the past 12 months. In contrast, its "website as a source of bookings has been negligible, as 80% of the bookings come through the app and around 20% through the call centre", Anand Subramanian, director of marketing communication at Ola, which registered more than 2 lakh rides a day in January told the ET.

Just when you thought the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=net+neutrality&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">net neutrality</a> debate was settling down, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=TRAI&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">TRAI</a> has re-opened that chapter. After it banned differential pricing, its latest paper has mentions of TSP-agnostic zero-rating platforms. 
 This critical paper has raised some valid questions on what violates the ethics of <keyword id="6391709" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Net-neutrality">Net Neutrality</keyword>, and what doesn’t, and more importantly whether zero-platforms can be built within the principles of Net Neutrality. One of the apps that have been mentioned in <keyword id="6356988" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="TRAI">TRAI</keyword>’s proposal is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Gigato&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Gigato</a>. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Gigato&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Gigato</a> is an app that offers free data to its users. It has partnerships with the likes of Faasos, Jabong and Saavn and run promotions on their behalf, and give out free data in return. 
 <keyword id="3191695" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Gigato">Gigato</keyword> is a subsidiary of <keyword id="3514100" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="us-based-mavin-co">US-based Mavin Co</keyword>. The company’s official website says that it supports Net Neutrality and believes in ‘unrestricted data for unrestricted Internet’ for all users. 
 How this works is that the company has tied up with brand partners to run promotions, and offer free data in exchange. Built on Mavin’s technology, Gigato is currently limited to <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword> in India. 
 
Sample these deals - Use 20MB data for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=WhatsApp&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">WhatsApp</a> and get 10 MB data free, use 5MB for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Uber&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Uber</a> and get 10 MB data free and so on. Basically, the more data you use, the more you’re paid back. The app currently has over 100,000 downloads and claims to have returned over 150GB of data on peak days. 
 
“We run lots of different pilots: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Saavn&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Saavn</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Jabong&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Jabong</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=TrulyMadly&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">TrulyMadly</a>. In some cases data is given out for using the app for a certain amount of time, like say 20 minutes of usage will get you some data. We have 20 plus partners for promotions and the data is credited in MBs,” Shailesh Nalawadi, CEO and co-founder of Gigato explained in a <a href="http://indianexpress.com/article/technology/tech-news-technology/trai-net-neutrality-paper-gigato-app-2892559/">recent interview</a>. 
 
He argues the app helps users in economizing data choices and is encouraging the usage of 3G networks. 
 
When asked if this model might run into the same risk as the current net neutrality debate where a handful of biggies can squash startups in the ‘free data’ promotions race, Nalawadi argues the app has no operator restrictions and thus in a way is not violating Net neutrality in India. 
 
This startup believes zero-rating apps on a TSP agnostic platform is what India needs. There will always be ones who disagree.

This app gives you free data every time you use it!

At any point of time, there seem to be enough opinions and analyses about what makes an entrepreneur or his business attractive to Venture Capital (<keyword id="47361" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="VC">VC</keyword>) investors. 
 
Take Mark Suster’s excellent post on <a href="https://medium.com/r/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbothsidesofthetable.com%2Fentrepreneur-dna-c1c5d312aaaa%23.d5phzhrac">Entrepreneur DNA</a> for instance, which calls for entrepreneurs to clear a very stiff gauntlet of demanding tests, to be considered worthy of being called an entrepreneur. 
 
And yet, there is precious little information to answer another question which has co-existed all along: 
 
What makes certain VCs better than others? 
 
I propose answers to this critical, and yet almost unknown facet of the mating dance between entrepreneurs and VCs. 
 
Answers that seem to point to the possibility that the best VCs are the ones who treat their “customers” well. First things first, who are a VC’s “customers”? 
 
In a dipstick test done by Larry Cheng on <a href="https://medium.com/r/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flarrycheng.com%2F2009%2F09%2F27%2Fwho-is-the-venture-capitalists-customer%2F">“Who is the VC’s customer?”</a>, about 85% of the respondents (Interestingly, the group of respondents included several entrepreneurs, but no VCs) said that the VC’s sole customer is the Limited Partner (A firm or an individual who invests in a VC fund). 
 
More revealing was the fact that not a single participant in the survey said that the entrepreneur is the VC’s principal customer. 
 
One would assume that if entrepreneurs are the VC’s customer, entrepreneurs themselves would know about it. 
 
Might the observation that not a single entrepreneur considered themselves the VC’s principal customer be attributed to the possibility that most VCs do a terrible job at taking care of their customer (The entrepreneur)? 
 
For the most part, the perception that there is a huge skew in the power balance between VCs and entrepreneurs (In favour of the VCs) runs very deep. 
 
The truth though is that <a href="https://medium.com/r/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.businessinsider.in%2FVCs-are-from-Venus-Entrepreneurs-are-from-Mars%2Farticleshow%2F53449860.cms">without entrepreneurs, VCs would be out of business</a>. 
 
More profoundly though, in the case of the best entrepreneurs, they are always free to choose another investor that takes better care of them.

The revelation is surprising and yet hard to refute: Entrepreneurs are VC’s customers and therefore, deserve (Maybe even demand ?) excellent customer service. 
 
Borrowing from Suster’s piece, what are the qualities that make up the DNA of a truly customer-focused VC? 
 
This post offers a primer on some of these traits: 
 
Approachable &amp; Responsive 
It is perhaps every entrepreneur’s greatest pet peeve: VCs either don’t reply to emails or take too long to respond.

On the other side of the table, it needs to be appreciated that VCs get a LOT of email. For instance, Ted Serbinski estimates that he gets nearly <a href="https://medium.com/r/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.crainsdetroit.com%2Farticle%2F20130910%2FBLOG111%2F130909890%2F5-secrets-for-getting-a-vc-to-respond-to-your-email">100,000 emails a year</a>. 
 
For most people, that translates to an email almost every minute while they are at work. 
 
For a VC, it is a daunting task to go through every mail and provide a detailed response within a reasonable turnaround time. And yet, there is no other way for a VC to make a great first impression and (possibly) close the sale. 
 
Much like in the case of McDonald’s &amp; Dominos’, service delivery and turnaround time are not only critical to maintaining the VC’s brand ethos, but if done wrong, can result in the loss of a customer and create negative word-of-mouth. 
 
The time and the effort that goes into timely and well-written email responses is well worth a VC’s investment.

Knows the Customer 
 
Companies that have mastered the art of customer service have been able to do so because they have identified just who their customer is, and, just as importantly, who isn’t. 
 
The same is true in the context of VC firms : They need to know their focus sectors / business areas, preferred ticket sizes, and stage at the time of entry. Entrepreneurs and ventures that remain excluded thereafter, are by definition, not the VC firm’s customers. 
 
Wait, surely this is too trivial and obvious a matter to even be mentioned? 
 
But if that were the case, why do so many entrepreneurs end up receiving responses such as: 
 
“This space is not of interest to us” 
….after weeks of diligence ? 
A good VC knows how to quickly and efficiently say No when an opportunity doesn’t fit the firm’s investing interests. 
 
Not doing so wastes a lot of time and creates unnecessary clutter in the mailbox. 
 
Offers Relevant Feedback &amp; Adds Value 
Being an entrepreneur is hard enough, without having to hear what is passed off as “feedback” in many VC conversations, and then keep a straight face. 
 
One of my favourite entrepreneurs told me about how during one of his meetings with a VC, the VC “took the whole of 30 minutes to tell us that our company name will never work. Why ? Because it has more than two syllables!” 
 
Perhaps there exists a study out there which has established a correlation between the likelihood of a startup’s success and the number of syllables in its name. 
 
But even if that were the case, every VC owes an entrepreneur some feedback, either on how he could improve, or on why he chose to decline the investment opportunity. 
 
It is a responsibility that continues to apply in even greater effect if the investment is consummated, especially over board meetings and other reviews (No, pseudo-intellectual one liners used in B-Schools or consulting firms do NOT count as feedback).

Becomes your greatest Cheerleader 
The popular portrayal of the entrepreneur-VC relationship is one where the VC is, by some distance, the dominant partner in the relationship. 
 
The reality though is that the natural dynamic of the relationship implies that the risk-taking and fearless entrepreneur takes charge, and the VC supports and nurtures the business, especially during its tough times. 
 
In other words, the VC needs to become the Cheerleader for the business. 
 
When I had a chat with Sachin Bhatia, Co-Founder of MakeMyTrip &amp; Co-Founder of TrulyMadly about this, his views brought home an under-appreciated truth: 
 
‘Though the colour of money is the same, only one thing differentiates a great VC from all the others in my mind: will they support the venture and founders during tough times? Every venture will go through a bad phase, especially when it comes to raising a round of funds. As an entrepreneur I need the comfort that the VC will be good with the support needed to swim through these rough waters.”

“You spend most of your time actually dealing with your companies who are struggling and trying to help them. Because it’s the companies that are struggling or failing that actually need the most help. The companies that are succeeding are generally doing just fine without you. The companies that are failing are really the ones that need help and support. And so a lot of what you end up doing at the job is supporting struggling entrepreneurs. It’s kind of continuously humbling. You are a trouble shooter. There’s always something going wrong. Psychologically–we talk about this with our partners–you have to be psychologically prepared for the opposite. It seems like it’s going to be a life of glamor and excitement. It’s more of a life of struggle and misery. And if you are okay with that–because it’s part of the package–then the overall deal is pretty good.” 
 
So the next time you find yourself in an investment pitch meeting, whether as an entrepreneur or as a VC, remember that both sides are evaluating each other’s attractiveness, and there is only one chance to make a strong first impression.
