Any data that can identify an individual — like names, addresses, financial information, IP addresses, cookies, device IDs and other data — are covered under the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019.<br /><br />The bill includes requirement of notice and prior consent to use individual data, which limited the purpose for which the companies had processed this data for. These restrictions are put in place so that only necessary data is collected. The Indian government with this will wants to ensure that personal data of Indian citizens is safeguarded and not stored overseas. <br /><br />Truecaller highlighted this bill as one of the risks factors to its business in the <a href="https://corporate.truecaller.com/cms/18eb93ba-f68b-4446-829c-9d1ad3add6a5_TruecallerAB_prospectus2021.pdf">IPO prospectus</a>. It plans to raise SEK 1 billion, which is about $116 million.<br /><br /><strong>What does Truecaller say?<br /></strong><br />“If adopted, the act, which is<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/indias-personal-data-protection-law-versus-europes-gdpr/articleshow/81504058.cms"> broadly modelled on the GDPR </a>[European Union’s General Data Protection Regulations] will establish a mechanism for protection of personal data and would set up a national data protection authority. Ahead of its $116 million IPO, Truecaller says India's upcoming data protection bill may affect future earnings

Swedish caller identification app <keyword id="1106616" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="TrueCaller">Truecaller</keyword> on Wednesday introduced new features, including one that allows users to set a reason for their call, and enable the receiver to check whether the incoming call is personal, business or something urgent.<br /><br />Termed "Call Reason," this feature is expected to increase pick up rates, especially when callers are calling from new numbers.<br /><br />The other two features introduced by Truecaller for its 250 million active users globally are "Schedule SMS" and "SMS Translate".<br /><br />"We are thrilled at the launch of Call reason, Schedule SMS and SMS Translate. We have been working towards building an innovative communication suite for our users and these three features are the next big step in line with this mission," Rishit Jhunjhunwala, Chief Product Officer at Truecaller, said while introducing the new features at a virtual event.<br /><br />Truecaller said that Call Reason will start rolling out from Wednesday to all Android users and will be launching for iOS early next year.<br /><br />The new Schedule SMS feature extends the platform's Caller ID feature to enable users to schedule a message reminder of any events, meetings, or what groceries you need to pick up at the end of the day.<br /><br />Users can schedule SMS by simply selecting the icon while messaging and choose a date and time. Your message will be sent then, and you will always be able to see it scheduled in your chat. This feature is available for Android users only.<br /><br />Additionally, the SMS Translate feature allows users to instantly translate the content of their messages directly in Truecaller without leaving the app.<br /><br />This feature works for both SMS and instant messages (IM).<br /><br />The app automatically detects if a foreign language is used in the messaging screen and will show that a translation is available. This feature is powered by Google's ML Kit and all messages are processed locally in the phone, which means the content of your messages never leaves your device.<br /><br />Language packs are downloaded to your device before translation begins. Truecaller introduces call reason feature, SMS scheduling and more

The move aims to address the increasing problem of spam calls and messages in the country. Telecom giants, including Vodafone, Airtel, Jio, and BSNL, are all working towards implementing these AI filters in their services by the TRAI's deadline. Airtel has already announced the provision of AI filters to their customers, while Jio is gearing up to install filters for fake calls and messages. <br /><br />Along with the AI filters, the regulatory authority has prohibited promotional calls to 10-digit numbers. Moreover, TRAI plans to introduce a Caller ID feature that would display the name and photo of the caller. TRAI's new AI spam filters will provide relief from spam calls and messages

Sarin would be bringing with him his global experience and network, using which he would focus on supporting and advising the company on the overall strategy, said a statement from Vodafone.<br />

THE ANNOYANCE ENGINE: Spam robocalls became profitable scams by exploiting the phone system, but you can stop them

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>Phone phishing scams that pretend to be Apple are getting more advanced.</li><li>The newest technique is that attackers sometimes pretend to call from Apple's help line.</li><li>Because iPhones come with the number for Apple's help line pre-loaded in contacts, that means that Apple's logo and name pops up on the iPhone caller ID when an attacker manages to successfully fake the call's origins.</li><li>The best way to protect yourself is if you get a suspicious call, hang up, and call Apple (or your bank, carrier) directly.</li></ul><p>The next time you receive a call from Apple, it might not be from someone actually working there. In fact, it's much more likely that it's coming from a scammer.</p><p>Some scammers have discovered a new technique that takes advantage of the fact that it's easy to fake a call to make it appear as if it's coming from any phone number you choose, the security journalist Brian Krebs <a href="https://krebsonsecurity.com/2019/01/apple-phone-phishing-scams-getting-better/">reports</a> - even Apple's main help line.&#xa0;</p><p>That means when a scam call spoofing Apple's number arrives at your phone, the lock screen will display Apple's name and logo.</p><p>It's pretty convincing. But that doesn't mean you should give the caller your password or other private information.</p><p>"Folks have a learned trust of caller ID that is unearned," Steven Andrés, who teaches cybersecurity at the Fowler College of Business and graduate homeland security program at San Diego State University, told Business Insider. "Most consumers don't realize that when a modern phone system places a call, it also sends along the caller ID to be displayed. That means the caller is providing the number, not the phone company."</p><p>"If I instruct my phone system to call your iPhone and I set the caller ID to be 1-800-MY-APPLE, this will match the pre-loaded contact card which shows the Apple corporate logo, adding incredible legitimacy and increases the likelihood of the victim believing Apple is calling," he continued.&#xa0;</p><p>It's not Apple calling. It's just someone taking advantage of the way that the phone system works.&#xa0;</p><p>Apple's help line is a 1-800 number. Using widely available and easy-to-use software, a telemarketer or scammer can say its calls are coming from any number it chooses, <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/spoofing-and-caller-id">a technique called caller ID spoofing</a>. It's kind of like how you can write any return address you'd like on a letter.</p><p>What makes this scam so scary is that you probably have a contact for Apple in your address book, because the phone number comes pre-loaded on iPhones, and most people don't even know that that information is in their address book.&#xa0;</p><p>"What's broken here is the cell phone system, and attackers preying on brand loyalty," Andrés said.</p><p>According to Apple, its support division never calls up customers unexpectedly and it's been working with authorities to stamp out these kind of scams. <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204759">It also provides some information on its website</a> about recognizing and avoiding emails and fake support calls, along with an email address that enables customers to report likely scams.&#xa0;</p><h2>Hang up and call back&#xa0;</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>There is one way to protect yourself from calls like this: Don't give out personal information to incoming callers.&#xa0;<p>Instead, you should hang up the phone and call Apple yourself. This is even more important if you get a spoofed call from your bank or wireless carrier.&#xa0;</p><p>"There's very little that everyday consumers can do on the receiving end of the phone call," Andres explained. "My advice is to not trust that the caller ID is genuine. Say thanks for the information, then call up the number on the back of the credit card."</p><p>That's pretty similar to the advice that the <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/spoofing-and-caller-id">FCC gives about spoofed phone calls</a>.</p><p>From <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/spoofing-and-caller-id">an FCC consumer guide:</a>&#xa0;</p><ul><li>Never give out personal information such as account numbers, Social Security numbers, mother's maiden names, passwords or other identifying information in response to unexpected calls or if you are at all suspicious.</li><li>If you get an inquiry from someone who says they represent a company or a government agency, hang up and call the phone number on your account statement, in the phone book, or on the company's or government agency's website to verify the authenticity of the request. You will usually get a written statement in the mail before you get a phone call from a legitimate source, particularly if the caller is asking for a payment.</li><li>Use caution if you are being pressured for information immediately.</li></ul><p>What makes this new Apple spoof so dangerous is that it's taking advantage of the contact card likely already in your iPhone. Other scams spoof numbers from<a href="https://www.bbb.org/article/news-releases/16670-a-new-kind-of-phone-scam-neighbor-spoofing"> your area code</a>, but what makes this particular scam so unique is that you're more likely to trust the Apple call because it displays the phone number and brand logo.&#xa0;</p><p>The problem isn't a flaw with the iPhone; to properly fix the spoofing problem would require action from wireless carriers to create authoritative records for who is placing calls. But that would likely require a lot of work and additional systems, and it may be years before Congress or other government bodies require them to curtail this problem.</p><p>So in the meantime, smart people will remain suspicious of incoming calls.&#xa0;</p><p>"I wouldn't consider pre-loading the Apple contact information a security bug," Andres said. "It's convenient as you're very likely to need that number to call for help."</p><div></div>

That means you can use Do Not Disturb as a sort of filter that allows people you know - your own contacts - through, but sends unknown numbers directly to voicemail. It is a paranoid move in response to a spate of ethnic riots between Uighurs and Han Chinese, the dominant ethnic group in the country, ten years ago.</p><p>The Communist Party sees Uighurs' religion - Islam - as a threat, and often <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-uighur-detention-camps-cleanse-religion-leaked-documents-nyt-2019-11">conflates it with religious extremism</a>.</p><p>For this reason, China apparently feels the need to control the Uighur diaspora outside the country in case they return home and carry out attacks.</p><p class="source"><span>Kevin Frayer/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Police patrol on a scooter as an ethnic Uighur boy stands in his doorway in the old town of Kashgar, Xinjiang, in June 2017.</p><p>Leaked classified documents, <a href="https://www.icij.org/investigations/china-cables/exposed-chinas-operating-manuals-for-mass-internment-and-arrest-by-algorithm/">published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists</a> last month, showed a concerted effort by regional officials to keep a close eye on Uighurs with foreign citizenship, wherever they are.</p><p>"For those still outside the country for whom suspected terrorism cannot be ruled out, the border control reading will be carried out by hand to ensure that they are arrested the moment they cross the border," one government bulletin said.</p><p>"For those ... whom suspected terrorism cannot be ruled out, they should first be placed into concentrated education and training for examination," it added, referring to tightly-secured detention camps in the region, where former inmates say they are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/life-inside-china-internment-camps-for-uighur-minority-in-xinjiang-bbc-report-2018-8">physically and psychologically tortured</a>.</p><p class="source"><span>Associated Press</span></p><p class="caption">Copies of Chinese government documents that were leaked to a the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists displayed in November 2019.</p><h2>'Family and friends suffer the consequences'</h2><p>Several members of the Uighur diaspora told Business Insider they've also been spooked by China without even having to step foot in the country.</p><p>Rushan Abbas, a Uighur activist living in Herndon, Virginia, discovered last September that her sister had been disappeared by Xinjiang authorities six days after she spoke out against China's human rights record. She still has no idea of her whereabouts.</p><p>"The Chinese government is basically holding her hostage for my speaking out about the horrific blatant human rights abuses of the Chinese government," Abbas told Business Insider last month.</p><p>"My sister's story is not unique. China harasses Uighurs in the diaspora's relatives back home, presenting them with heartbreaking choice: Keep silent about the horrific violations of human rights, or let your family and friends suffer the consequences for your choice for speaking out," she said.</p><p>"I am an example of that."</p><p class="source"><span>Courtesy of Bahram Sintash</span></p><p class="caption">Bahram Sintash (right) and his father, Qurban Mamut, during Mamut's February 2017 visit to Washington, DC.</p><h2>An entire business gone</h2><p>Abbas is not the only foreign Uighur who has been punished in Xinjiang for their actions outside the region.</p><p>Bahram Sintash, a Uighur-American living in Chantilly, Virginia, has been campaigning for his father's release from the Xinjiang camps since October 2018. He has called on the Chinese government to reveal the whereabouts of his father, a retired magazine editor, through social media, protests, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/family-of-uighurs-in-china-say-are-blocked-deleted-by-scared-family-2019-2">speaking to journalists</a>.</p><p>Sintash has been living in the US since 2008, but continued to visit his family in Xinjiang until 2015, when his Chinese visa was inexplicably revoked. That same year, he had opened a company in Urumqi, Xinjiang's capital city, to provide fitness supplements and workout plans to Uighurs in the region.</p><p>Sintash requested anonymity for his company to protect its former employees. But he said the business flourished, and had earned close to a million dollars.</p><p>That success came to an end in October 2018 - exactly two days after Sintash <a href="https://www.rfa.org/english/news/uyghur/journalist-10182018151224.html">spoke to Radio Free Asia</a> about his father's disappearance for the first time.</p><p class="source"><span>Courtesy of Bahram Sintash</span></p><p class="caption">Sintash's father Qurban Mamut in Washington, DC, during a February 2017 visit.</p><p>Multiple police officers went to the company's office in Urumqi, took photos of every corner of the office, and told employees to leave as soon as possible, Sintash told Business Insider.</p><p>Shortly after the raid, police officers further questioned his colleagues, shut down his office, storage warehouse, and corporate social media accounts, he said.</p><p>"The police warned my partners to stop communicating with me and told them I was the enemy of the country living overseas," Sintash said.</p><p>"I couldn't get my money back from the region," he added. "I can no longer contact any business partners or my teammates or my customers."</p><p class="source"><span>Thomas Peter/Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People, Beijing, in November 2018.</p><p>Sintash said he learned the news of his company's collapse not from any official correspondence from Xinjiang authorities, but from one of his customers.</p><p>There's no other way to verify it: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/family-of-uighurs-in-china-say-are-blocked-deleted-by-scared-family-2019-2">His mother blocked him on WeChat last year</a> for fear of getting in trouble with authorities, and all his phone calls to regional authorities about his father have gone unanswered.</p><h2><strong>Mysterious automated calls and Facebook messages</strong></h2><p>As some Uighurs lose touch with their family on the phone, others have received menacing messages from Chinese-speaking agents.</p><p class="source"><span>Emmanuel Dunand/AFP/Getty</span></p><p class="caption">A protester wears a mask painted with Xinjiang or East Turkestan's flag and tears of blood in Brussels in April 2018.</p><p>Guly Mahsut, a Uighur Canadian living in Ottawa, reported receiving multiple automated calls from Mandarin Chinese-speaking agents in recent weeks.</p><p>A female caller had identified herself as the Chinese embassy and told her to pick up some documents. Mahsut told Business Insider that even as she kept blocking the numbers calling her, she kept receiving the same automated calls from other numbers.</p><p>It's not clear how the caller got Mahsut's phone number, what documents she is referring to, and why Mahsut was receiving these calls. Earlier this year she publicly questioned China's claim that it had released most inmates from Xinjiang's detention centers, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/aug/01/uighurs-challenge-china-to-prove-missing-relatives-are-free">telling Agence France-Presse</a> she knew of a cousin and two friends still in the camps.</p><p>Listen to one of the recordings Mahsut received below, accompanied with a rough translation of the message verified by Business Insider:</p><p>The Chinese Embassy in Ottawa told Business Insider this call was a "telecommunications fraud," calling the caller "law breakers [who] use technical means to disguise phone numbers as embassies and consulates." It added that the alleged scam is "not targeted at a specific group of people."</p><p>Some 30 members of the Uighur diaspora in Norway have received dozens of automated calls from phone numbers connected to the Chinese embassy in Oslo, <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/norway-automated-calls-china-embassy-spook-uighur-diaspora-191113205036890.html">Al Jazeera reported</a> last month.</p><p>One of the Uighurs, a naturalized Norwegian citizen, said she started receiving the calls after attending an anti-China rally on October 1.</p><p>The Chinese embassy in Oslo denied the calls in a similar manner to the London embassy, saying they were part of a scam.</p><p>Uighurs living in the US and France also told <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/chinese-police-are-spying-on-uighurson-american-soil">The Daily Beast</a> and <a href="https://foreignpolicy.com/2018/03/02/chinese-police-are-secretly-demanding-personal-information-from-french-citizens-uighurs-xinjiang/">Foreign Policy</a> last year that they had been asked for personal information including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-compiling-uighur-muslim-global-database-reports-2018-8">license plate numbers, bank details, ID photos, and marriage certificates</a> - and threatened harm to their families in Xinjiang if they did not comply.</p><p class="source"><span>Kevin Frayer/Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Uighur men pray before a meal during the Corban Festival, also known as Eid al-Adha, in Turpan, Xinjiang, in September 2016.</p><p>Sintash, the fitness company owner, has also received messages in Chinese threatening to harm his family.</p><p class="source"><span>Facebook</span></p><p class="caption">A Facebook comment that Bahram Sintash received from a Chinese-speaking account in January 2019.</p><p>In January 2019, he received a comment in simplified Chinese on Facebook, in response to a comment he had left in the Uighur language on another person's page.</p><p>"You are a good son of the Chinese Communist Party. Your father has been released now," the comment read, without providing any evidence.</p><p>"I reckon you can keep selling your white powder [crying-eyes emoji]," the comment continued, in what Sintash took to mean his fitness supplements. "Strongly support you."</p><p>The account was registered under a Chinese name, and its profile photo was of a young Chinese woman.</p><p>The entire account has since been deleted. Business Insider last saw the post in February, and has preserved screenshots of the comment.</p><p>"What I understood [from the comment] was: 'Keep obeying the Chinese Communist Party and shut your mouth. Your father is in our hands,'" Sintash told Business Insider.</p><p>"I felt threatened by the CCP."</p><p>Trolling people is not a new Chinese tactic. The country's propaganda department <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-china-propaganda-department-glosses-over-human-rights-2018-6">pays some two million people to publish pro-government posts and attack critics</a> on social media, a Harvard University <a href="https://gking.harvard.edu/50C">report</a> found in 2016.</p><p>These commenters are known as the "wumao dang," which translates to "50 cent party" in Chinese - a reference to the amount of money in yuan they are allegedly paid per post. That's about $0.07.</p><h2>'Your mother has died'</h2><p>Another bizarre run-in with Chinese speakers took place in late October, when Sintash and other Uighur activists staged a protest outside the Capital One Arena in downtown Washington, DC.</p><p>As Sintash and 13 others held up signs and chanted slogans, a Han Chinese man - the largest ethnic group - went up to them and said: "Your mother has died" five times.</p><p>Video shows the group looking at the man, puzzled, as he walked away.</p><p>"He was a pro-CCP Chinese citizen who could've said anything to define [himself] ... but he chose to tell us 'your mother has died,'" Sintash said.</p><p>"I was shocked at the time. I never expected someone to deliver such an evil message while in the United States."</p><p>Those words were particularly jarring to Sintash, who hadn't spoken to his mother or anyone else in his family since February 2018. Probably not.</p><p>"They cannot control us," Sintash said. "China looks for people who are weaker mentally. I am different ... I have the US behind me."</p><p>"I never cared about politics in the past," he added. "What China is doing to the people in the region - we have to speak up. Mysterious automated calls, vanished relatives, and sinister Facebook comments: How China intimidates Uighurs who don't even live in the country

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP/Andre Penner</span></p><p class="caption">There are dozens of websites like Whitepages that publicly display your personal contact information.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><ul class="summary-list"><li style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Whitepages is just one of dozens of websites that store and display your personal contact information, including your name, relatives, and even address.</strong></li><li style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Anybody can search these sites (usually called "people search" sites) to find your contact information, as long as they have your name and age.</strong></li><li style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>While it's virtually impossible to purge your contact information from every single one of these sites, most of the largest public records databases provide ways to remove your results.</strong></li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.</a></strong></li></ul><p>Almost everyone's Googled themselves at some point, curious at what sort of info Google has picked up about them. And if you have, chances are you've stumbled upon a site like Whitepages, which archives personal info about you for anyone to search up.</p><p>This personal info usually includes your public records - i.e., your name, age, address, landline number, and relatives. Some sites go even further than that, and add in your cell number, place of work, and criminal record if you have one.</p><p>As privacy becomes harder and harder to come by on the internet, it's reasonable to worry about having this sort of info out there for anyone to find. Luckily, there are ways to remove your info from these sites.</p><p>It should be noted that with so many people search sites out there, and more cropping up all the time, it's virtually impossible to wipe your personal info off the internet completely. A few sites, like <span style="font-weight: 400;">Pipl and Zabasearch, don't offer any way to take your info down. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But all of the most commonly used people search sites - Whitepages, Spokeo, FamilyTreeNow, etc. - allow you to submit Opt Out requests, which will eventually erase your info from their searches.</span></p><p>Here's how to remove yourself from Whitepages, Spokeo, and more.</p><h2><strong>How to remove yourself from Whitepages' records</strong></h2><p>Whitepages is the biggest and most popular public records database around. If anyone is looking for your info, this is likely where they'll start. The site offers two categories of personal info:</p><ul><li>Free information, which includes your name, age, current addresses, relatives, and occasionally your home phone number.</li><li>"Premium" information, which includes all your past addresses, cell phone number, and criminal and financial records.</li></ul><p>In short, accessing the free info doesn't cost anything, while accessing the Premium info requires a payment of at least $4.99. Luckily, however, you can remove both for free. Here's how to remove both.</p><h3><strong>Remove your free info from Whitepages</strong></h3><p><strong>1. </strong>Navigate to <a href="https://www.whitepages.com/">the Whitepages website</a>.</p><p><strong>2. </strong>In the text boxes provided, enter your name and address. They don't display as much information as Whitepages, but it's still worth wiping your data off the site if you have privacy concerns. Please allow up to 48 hours for your record to be removed."</p><p>Your profile should disappear within a few days.</p><h2><strong>How to remove yourself from other public information sites</strong></h2><p>There are dozens, if not hundreds of different people search sites on the internet. As mentioned above, some simply don't let you take your info down. Some might even make you pay to erase your profile.</p><p>But generally, if you find a people search site that you don't trust displaying your personal info, your best bet is to search their site or Google for an opt out form.
