Beautiful photos show what life is like in the world's most isolated settlement, which sits at the foot of an active volcano in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean

Travel means different things to different people. A short flight followed by a taxi transfer to a stylish resort with an inviting pool satisfies many people’s needs. But for those with time to spare and incurable wanderlust, there are plenty of exotic, hard-to-reach destinations that involve a lot more plan­ning than does a long weekend in Phuket. Mobile phone signals aren’t guaranteed in the following places but travel bragging rights definitely are. These destinations even come with their own superlatives. Even in a list of desolate destinations, Pitcairn Island wins by some distance. Best known as the 18th century hiding place of mutineers from the British ship HMS Bounty, no inhabited island is further from a mainland. The British Overseas Territory is barely more accessible today than it was in 1790. Anyone planning to visit from Hong Kong would need to fly to <keyword id="4741" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tokyo">Tokyo</keyword> for a connection to Papeete, in Tahiti, from where there are two four-hour flights a week to Mangareva, in the Gambier Islands. It’s then a 32-hour trip to Pitcairn aboard a supply boat that departs only every three months. A few years ago, officials launched a campaign to encourage people to join the isolated community. Only one person applied. The world’s coldest permanently settled area, Oymyakon shivers in the Siberian permafrost a two-day drive across the Russian <keyword id="101920" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tundra">tundra</keyword> from the nearest airport. Winter in the gold mining town is so frigid that drivers leave their car engines running all day to keep them from seizing up. Students are expected to attend classes unless the mercury falls below minus 52 degrees Celsius (-61.6 degrees Fahrenheit) and newly arrived visitors are reminded that saliva freezes in open mouths, glasses stick to faces and batteries last only a few minutes. Few crops survive in temperatures that can plummet to a bone-chilling minus 70 degrees and locals make do with reindeer meat, raw flesh shaved from frozen fish and ice cubes of horse blood with macaroni. Based on a year-round average temperature of 34.5 degrees Celsius (94.1 degrees Fahrenheit), the Danakil Depression is the hottest place on Earth. The inhospitable desert in northern <keyword id="61936" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ethiopia">Ethiopia</keyword> is also one of the lowest points on the planet, at 125 metres below sea level. Visitors need to tread carefully – the surreal landscape is littered with sulphur springs, geysers, acidic pools, huge salt pans, volcanoes and multicoloured mineral lakes. Amazingly, there is human activity at the “gateway to hell”. More than 700 officially registered salt miners toil in the furnace-like conditions for about US$7 per day. Located in the Bay of Bengal, more than 1,300km (807 miles) off the east coast of India, the Andaman Islands are the peaks of a submerged <keyword id="6439698" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="mountain">mountain</keyword> range. The tropical archipelago boasts pristine beaches, coral reefs and an abundance of wildlife. Of the 572 islands, only about 30 are inhabited, one of which is regarded as the most difficult place to set foot on as it’s home to the world’s most isolated tribe. North Sentinel Island gained notoriety last year when an American tourist was killed by bow and arrow-wielding Sentinelese warriors, having ignored warnings from fisherman not to go ashore. An out-of-the-way settlement in a hard-to-reach country, Ittoqqortoormiit is the remotest inhabited community in the western hemisphere. Weekly flights to this distant corner of Greenland require an onward helicopter transfer to the village, although for a month or two in summer, cruise ships are able to negotiate the ice­berg-infested waters. The 450 inhabitants rely on fishing and hunting (including an annual quota of 35 polar bears) for survival and let off steam by dog sledding and snowmobile camping trips along the banks of Scoresby Sund. The world’s longest fjord serves as a gateway to Northeast Greenland National Park, the world’s largest. The luxury resorts of the Maldives are easy enough to reach, usually with a sea­plane or speedboat transfer after a long-haul flight. For something more quirky, book a flight to Gan. From 1941 to 1976, the southernmost island in the archipelago served as a British Navy and <keyword id="113964" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Royal-Air-Force">Royal Air Force</keyword> base. Much of the military infrastructure remains, including the airfield, parade ground, a mildewing art deco cinema and rows of low-rise garrison buildings. The British also built a causeway linking Gan to three neighbouring islands – the resulting 18km (11-mile) road is the longest in the Maldives. The beguiling beauty of Wadi Rum feels older than time. For centuries only nomadic Bedouins were able to survive in the inhospitable desert, situated in the far south of Jordan, the safest country in the Middle East. Then along came charismatic British officer T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia), who led an Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire from Wadi Rum during the first world war. Photo: Tim Pile The most remote inhabited archipelago in the world, volcanic <keyword id="1046045" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tristan-da-Cunha">Tristan da Cunha</keyword> lies 2,432km (1,511 miles) west of Cape Town. Another British Overseas Territory, the main island is home to 246 residents with nine different surnames. About 400km (249 miles) south and unin­habit­ed except for six weather station personnel, Gough Island is possib­ly the world’s least accessible world heritage site. Appropriately enough, it shares the Unesco designation with Inaccessible Island, 30km (19 miles) southwest of Tristan. The only way of reaching this far-flung South Atlantic bolt-hole is by ship from Cape Town – a seven-day sailing that operates nine times a year. More than six million tourists visited Grand Canyon National Park in 2018 but hidden away in the craggy sandstone formations lies the only village inside the canyon. Supai is the capital of the <keyword id="8232283" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Havasupai">Havasupai</keyword> Indian Reservation and the “people of the blue-green water” inhabit what has been described as the most remote community in the lower 48 states. Despite being just 13km (8 miles) from the nearest road, the only way to reach the settlement and stunning turquoise waterfalls is by helicopter, mule or on foot. Located 480km (298 miles) north of the Arctic Circle, Utqiagvik, <keyword id="20636" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alaska">Alaska</keyword>, is the northernmost town in the United States. When the sun sets in mid-November, it doesn’t rise again for 65 days. There are no roads in or out, so the Iñupiaq Eskimo settlement is accessible only by plane from Anchorage, or barge during the brief summer months. Locals still hunt and fish, but that’s partly because supermarket prices are among the highest in the world.

Green moved from England to the island in 2013. The following has been edited for length and clarity.My dad was a diplomat, and, as a kid, my family moved a lot. I grew up in several countries <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unique-travel-lessons-from-someone-who-lived-around-the-world-2022-1">around the world, </a>including Antigua, Bangladesh, Mozambique, and Kenya.In 2010, when I was 20 and working as a flight attendant for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ryanair-easyjet-wizz-europes-budget-airlines-compared-2024-5">easyJet</a> in England, my dad received a new posting at the Edinburgh of the Seven Seas.I initially thought he was moving to Scotland. But I misunderstood, as Edinburgh of the Seven Seas is a settlement in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-life-edinburgh-of-the-seven-seas-tristan-da-cunha-most-remote-settlement-in-the-world-2019-2">Tristan Da Cunha</a>, one of the world's most isolated settlements with only around 236 inhabitants.To get to the island, you must fly to Cape Town and then travel seven to 10 days and over 1,700 miles west across the South Atlantic Ocean. There are only around 10 scheduled trips a year, which are operated by three different ships. Two of the ships carry up to 12 passengers, and there's one ship that can carry 40.In 2012, I decided to take a six-week holiday to visit my family. When I arrived, a man on the island came to help with my luggage. His name was Shane, and I ended up meeting him again later in the island's only pub.After I left the island, Shane and I continued to talk on the phone every night. Two years into the relationship, I knew the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-in-together-relationship-dynamic-change-2024-4">next step was to move in together</a>.I wanted to live in Tristan Da Cunha. It helped that it wasn't completely abnormal for me to just pick up and move somewhere because I've been doing it all my life.So, in late 2013, I packed my belongings and moved there. There are no restaurants.Everyone knows everyone, and with that comes a lot of love. I've found that people will always look out for you.The<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/private-island-for-sale-in-canada-reachable-by-boat-helicopter-2024-9"> island is self-sufficient</a>, thanks to its farming and fishing community. Lobster is exported worldwide and provides the island's biggest source of income. The islanders also grow their own produce and rear cows, sheep, chickens, and ducks.<h2 id="8e3fbdaa-655a-48e0-946c-e214a51f779d">I love the freedom</h2>I walk three to four miles every afternoon and don't bump into anyone. It's so peaceful and quiet, and completely different from my life in England.Back in England, I used to get up at 2 a.m., commute over an hour to Gatwick Airport, and work 16-hour shifts. Here, to get to work, it takes me two minutes to walk to the tourism office, where I work as the head of tourism. We don't get many tourists, but the population can quadruple during the cruise season. There are around 900 tourists a year — though this can vary substantially.Although it didn't bother me that I would leave city life behind, there are some aspects that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-american-misses-after-moving-back-from-uk-2022-11">I miss about England</a>. In England, you can just go to the shop and get a premade meal. You can't do that here. If you want a burger, you have to grind the meat up and make the rolls. It's just a completely different lifestyle.Imported goods are also more expensive. Anything from South Africa has around a 75% markup on the original price, and anything from the UK has around a 95% markup. For example, I've just ordered myself a fridge. It cost around $650, but I had to pay $1,100 for it because of freight.Still, I feel more at home here than I ever did in England. I would never dream of letting a young kid walk alone in England. But here, I don't have to worry. There's always someone looking out for them or telling them off if they're being naughty. Even with my son, he can just be out in the garden, and I can be in the house.In the future, I'll encourage my kids to study abroad and experience life in other countries. Just because I decided to live on Tristan Da Cunha doesn't mean they have to live here forever.There is a lot of the world out there for them to see. I've been lucky to explore it, and I want them to have that experience, too.

The Commonwealth's new head of state could likely replace the Queen's portrait. However, just as the countries in the Commonwealth have their own currencies and their own banknote designs, they will have their own process for determining a new image. Representatives for Buckingham Palace did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

She also asked officials to explore the possibility of setting up an asylum centre on Saint Helena, the territory's main island, the report says.The report suggests that Patel had urged officials to look at other countries for inspiration in how to deal with illegal migration to the UK. Australia, whose former prime minister Tony Abbott was recently made a UK trade adviser, has used offshore facilities since the 1980s.A source familiar with the discussions told The Financial Times: "We have been looking at how other countries have been dealing with this issue... We have been scoping everything. Detailing how plastic pollution, overfishing and climate change are destroying ocean habitats, he said "We are at a unique stage in our history: Never before have we had such an awareness of what we are doing to the planet." He added: "The future of humanity and indeed all life on Earth, now depends on us."Awareness about how humans are destroying the oceans - primarily through overfishing, climate change, and plastic pollution - has been on the rise ever since, with the likes of actor Stephen Fry, model Cara Delevingne, and celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall tweeting their support for ocean protection. However, a recent UK government initiative could be the key to saving the oceans.Launched in 2017, the so-called "blue belt" is a programme which aims to safeguard the coastline of the UK and its overseas territories. In Britain itself, that includes an area of coastline nearly eight times the size of greater London.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">UK Government</div></div></div>But the majority of the blue belt lies beyond British shores in the UK's 14 overseas areas, from huge penguin colonies in the South Atlantic and tropical rainforests in the Caribbean to tropical rainforests in the Caribbean.In those overseas territories, some 85% of the critically endangered species the UK is responsible for are found.The scale of the project is vast, aiming to protect over four million square kilometres of British waters by 2020.<h2>So what is the blue belt?</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Getty / Mint Images / Art WolfeChinstrap penguins, Half Moon Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica</div></div></div>The blue belt is a series of marine conservation zones around the UK and UK territories' coastline. Any new activities which harm wildlife - such as dredging, or any significant building projects - will be banned in those areas.Commercial fishing is also being banned in large parts of the blue belt. As part of the blue belt initiative, the government announced that commercial fishing would be banned from one million square kilometres around British overseas territories. It also created marine protected areas around four islands in the Pacific and Atlantic, including an 840,000 square kilometre area around Pitcairn, and a 445,000 square kilometre area around St Helena, which is home to rare whale sharks and humpbacks. The UK government also plans to designate two further protection zones, one each around the south Atlantic islands of Ascension by 2019, and Tristan da Cunha by 2020.Fishing is banned in all of Pitcairn's zone - except for "sustainable" local fishing - and will be banned in half of the Ascension's 445,000 square kilometre areas. Fishing is allowed in the other areas, but activities such as oil drilling are prohibited.In overseas territories, it helps protect the vast amount of coastal wildlife: Breeding grounds for endangered turtles, one-third of the world's albatrosses, and one-quarter of the world's penguins are all located within British Overseas Territories, according to Defra.Along Britain's coastline, it is important for the purposes of protecting rare and endangered British species such as the short-snouted seahorse, the stalked jellyfish, and the peacock's tail seaweed.There are many other types of marine protected areas in the UK too, which are designed to protect rare or nationally important habitats, meaning a total of 209,000 square kilometres of British coastline are protected in total. That's two-fifths of Britain's entire coastline, according to Defra.<h2>Will the blue belt be enough?</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://eol.jsc.nasa.gov/searchphotos/photo.pl?mission=ISS040&amp;roll=E&amp;frame=12110">NASA</a>Earth's oceans sparkle in the sun in photos taken from space.</div></div></div>It's too early to tell in the UK's overseas territories, where the success of the project will not be known before it is fully rolled out in 2020.But it certainly appears to be helping in the UK.The Wildlife Trust announced in December that 2018 had been a good year for British wildlife thanks to the help of conservation action in Britain's coasts, with increasing sightings of marine wildlife. The organisation said seahorses, little terns and crawfish are among the creatures making a comeback in UK seas, with dozens more animals being spotted in greater numbers: nudibranches (sea slugs) and curled octopuses were all spotted in greater numbers too. Basking sharks were seen in Cardigan Bay, Wales, for the first time in three years.However, there is still a huge amount of work to do before our oceans are clean and our species are protected. Plastic - mostly from fishing rope - is now found in almost 100% of gannet nests, posing a big risk to the iconic birds and their chicks. On one estuary in Kent alone, nearly 3,000 kilograms of rubbish were collected in a clean-up drive, the Wildlife Trust said. Dr Lissa Batey, senior living seas officer at The Wildlife Trusts, said in a statement: "This review of sightings and action from across the UK has given a glimpse, a mere taster, of the wonders of our marine wildlife - delightful species that everyone has the opportunity to encounter and learn more about."But it has also shown us the problems that remain and the challenges that our sea life faces."It's not too late. We are already seeing recovery in some of our marine protected areas, but we don't yet have a fully functioning network of nature reserves at sea, where wildlife has the opportunity to thrive."Protecting our oceans in the long-term will require even greater public awareness, co-operation with key industries such manufacturing and fishing, and significant investment.
