It said, "Considering the gravity of the situation, leading to loss of human lives and damage to public and private properties, the state executive committee (SEC) of <keyword id="22963141" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tripura-disaster-management-authority" source="keywords">Tripura Disaster Management Authority</keyword> (TDMA) under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary in its August 24 meeting has decided to declare the entire state as natural calamity affected area." Accordingly, the whole state of <keyword id="19919396" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tripura" source="keywords">Tripura</keyword> is notified as a natural calamity-affected area due to the recent unprecedented flood, it said. Following a request from the state government, the Centre has sent a five-member inter-ministerial team for an on-the-spot assessment of damage caused by the floods, an official of the Revenue department said on condition of anonymity. At present, 53,356 people are staying in 369 relief camps as their houses either collapsed or washed away due to the floods, he said, adding that the administration has already started releasing relief assistance for rebuilding of their houses.

Heavy rains trigger flooding across various districts in Tripura; rescue operation top priority, says CM Saha

Low pressure system over Gangetic West Bengal to dump very heavy rains across East India; IMD warns of flooding!

Just two days after recording 811.6 mm of rainfall in a day, <keyword id="635157" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cherrapunji" source="Orion">Cherrapunji</keyword> in Meghalaya received a bountiful 972 mm of precipitation in 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Friday, the highest in June since 1995, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. One of the wettest places in the world, Cherrapunji has recorded more than 800 mm of precipitation on a June day on nine occasions since the IMD started keeping records, the IMD data showed. Till Friday, Cherrapunji has received a total of 4081.3 mm rainfall this month, Sunit Das, Scientist E at IMD's regional centre in Guwahati, said. In 24 hours ending 8:30 am on Wednesday, the town nestled in the East Khasi Hills gauged a copious 811.2 mm of rainfall. On June 16, 1995, Cherrapunji logged 1563.3 mm of rainfall. A day before, on June 15, 1995, it received 930 mm of precipitation. "It doesn't always rain like this. 50-60 cm is normal (in Cherrapunji) once or twice every year. But 80 cm and above is certainly not usual," Das told PTI. "A trough has been persisting over the region for some days and southwesterly winds have been continuously bringing a lot of moisture from the Bay of Bengal. These winds smash against the cliffs of the Khai hills and give rainfall," he said. Cherrapunji recorded 673.6 mm of rainfall on Thursday, 811.6 mm on Wednesday, 62.6 mm on Tuesday, 293 mm on Monday and 354 mm on Sunday. The spell of extreme rainfall is likely to continue for one or two days. Thereafter, the intensity will decrease, the scientist said. At an aerial distance of 10 km from Cherrapunji, Mawsynram, the wettest place in India, gauged 710.6 mm of rainfall in 24 hours ending 8:30 am Wednesday, the maximum since June 1966. On June 10, 1966, Mawsynram had recorded 717.6 mm of rainfall. On June 7, 1966, it had received 944.7 mm of precipitation, the highest on a June day since the IMD began maintaining records. The town had gauged a 24-hour rainfall of 623.4 mm on June 8, 2015. "Mawsynram is at present the wettest place in India, with an average annual rainfall of 11802.4 mm (average of the 1974-2022 period). Cherrapunji receives 11359.4 mm of rainfall in a year (average of the 1971-2020 period)," Das said. Overall, the northeast and east India has received 220.3 mm of rainfall, 39 per cent more than normal, since June 1 when the monsoon season starts. Meghalaya has gauged 865.7 mm of rainfall, 153 per cent more than normal, since June 1. Arunachal Pradesh has recorded 253.1 mm of rainfall, 22 per cent more than normal, while Assam has logged 372.9 mm of rainfall, an excess of 79 per cent. However, not all states in the region have seen good rainfall. Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura have reported a rainfall deficiency of 50 per cent, 46 per cent and 38 per cent. Cherrapunji in Meghalaya sets another record with 811 mm on rainfall in a day

The situation in the hill section of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) in Dima Hasao district remained critical on Tuesday as rain continued to batter the mountainous region, affecting the Lumding-Badarpur single line railway route. NFR officials said that uninterrupted rains coupled with the difficult terrain severely affected the restoration and repair work, which might take several weeks. The Lumding-Badarpur section in Assam is the only route to connect Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and the southern part of Assam with the rest of the country. This rail link has been cut off for the past four days.

Meanwhile, officials of the state-owned Oil India Ltd (OIL) said that due to the heavy downpour over the past few days, Baghjan - where its leaking oil well caught fire - and adjoining areas in Tinsukia district have been badly hit by flood water and the accident site has been inundated, affecting the efforts to douse the blaze. "All connecting roads to the OIL's oil well site have been submerged with flood water. Bridges were damaged. At many places water is flowing over the road with knee to waist deep water. OIL's operational areas are heavily inundated," an OIL release said. A massive fire broke out on June 9 at OIL's Baghjan oil well near the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park that had been spewing natural gas and oil condensates uncontrollably since May 27. An important bridge en route to Baghjan, around 550 km east of Guwahati, was damaged due to the floods and the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has asked the official to build a bailey bridge for unimpeded movement of emergency services. The official said : "Over 4.63 lakh people affected by the floods and over 37,313 Ahectares of crop were badly affected due to the floods. Around 19,500 people took shelter in 132 relief camps." The official said that in the current wave of floods, three persons died in Goalpara and Dibrugarh districts while in the first wave of floods from May 22 claimed 15 lives in different districts of Assam. Assam flood situation worsens, 4.63 lakh people affected across 1,289 villages

New Delhi, Feb 11 () About 63.99 lakh hectares of farm land has been affected by floods in 15 states, while 7.91 lakh hectares of agriculture land has been hit by drought in two states so far in the ongoing 2019-20 crop year (July-June), union minister Narendra Singh Tomar said on Tuesday. "There have been extreme weather events in the recent past including extended dry period, flood, hailstorm, cyclonic rains and wind, etc. However, there was no significant reduction in the production of foodgrains during last three years," Agriculture Minister Tomar said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. As per the report of Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs) constituted by the central government, an estimated area of 63.99 lakh hectares was affected by floods in 15 states during 2019-20, he said. These states include Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal, he added. Due to drought, the minister said about 7.91 lakh hectares of farm land hit in Rajasthan and Manipur in the current year. On crop loss caused by wild animals in Uttarakhand, Tomar -- in a separate reply -- said the quantum loss of crops destroyed by stray cattle and wild animals are managed by concerned state governments. The Uttarkhand government has paid Rs 59.90 lakh compensation to farmers till October 2019, he said. The minister also mentioned that the central government, however, has taken various steps to prevent and check damage to crops by wild animals. The Union Environment Ministry has approved a project for undertaking 'Immuno-contraceptive measures' for population management of wild animals. That part, assistance is provided for construction/erecting of physical barriers, such as barbed wire fence, solar powered electric fence, bio-fencing using cactus and boundary wall to prevent the entry of wild animals into crop field, he added.
