"Triple lockdown will be implemented in the city corporation limit for one week starting from tomorrow.People shouldnot venture out. We need strict restrictionsto contain the spread of the virus. During triple lockdown, there will be more restrictions. Only necessary services will be allowed," Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran said. The announcement comes hours after the minister said the district was 'sitting on an active volcano' with rising number of COVID-19 cases and there was no guarantee that there would be no community spread. Surendran,who is also in charge of the district, said the courts here would remain closed. "There will be no public transportation. Only the medical, other essential shops and hospitals will function. People can go to medical shops with a proper prescription," he said. The Minister's office warned of action against those who venture out unnecessarily. The Kerala University has declared the cancellation of all exams in view of the lockdown. Earlier in the day, the Minister told reporters that the state government has decided to conduct more antigen tests in the district to check the spread of the virus. He said the restrictions in force in containment zones would be tightened and food delivery boys would be tested. Meanwhile, state police chief Loknath Behera told media that all the roads leading to the city would be closed and only essential services will be allowed to ply. "No vehicle movement will be allowed inside the city. In the corporation limit, only medical shops and essential shops like provisional stores will be allowed. Rest of the establishments will be closed. The state secretariat and other government offices will remain closed," Behera was quoted as saying in a release. Kerala on Sunday reported second highest single day rise of 225 COVID-19 cases, including seven jawans of an Army unit in the state, taking the total to 5,429. 'Triple lockdown' in Thiruvananthapuram starting July 6—  only hospitals and medical shops will be open

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 6 (): Kerala's COIVD-19 tally on Monday touched 5,622 with 193 fresh cases being reported, as the death toll rose to 27 with two more people succumbing to the virus. Of the positive cases, 92 had come from abroad and 62 from other states, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said addressing the media online from his residence as triple lockdown has been imposed in the state capital since this morning. Thirty-five have been infected through contact. The two deceased are a 82-year-old man, who had returned from Saudi Arabia recently and was suffering from cancer, and a 66-year-old man, under treatment at the Ernakulam medical college hospital. Vijayan said community spread was a threat and the government was taking various steps to prevent it, including triple lockdown and widespread testing. Triple lockdown has been imposed for a week in Thiruvanathapuram since this morning. All government offices,private establishments are shut and public transport is off the roads. Giving the break-up of cases, Vijayan said Malappuram recorded 35 cases, Pathnamthitta26, Ernakulam 25, Alappuzha and Kozhikode 15 each, Thrissur 14, Kollam and Kannur 11 each, Wayanad and Palakkad eight each, Thiruvananthapuram seven, Kottayam, Kasaragod and Idukki six each. The number of active cases in the state hastouched 2,252. Today, 167 people have recovered. About 1.83 lakh people areunder observation and 2,075 in hospitals,including 384 admitted today. In the last 24 hours, over 9,000 samples have been taken for testing.So far, 2,04,452 samples have been sent for testing. Vijayan said testing will be intensified in the border areas,especially in Manjeswaram in Kasaragod district, where everyday people are going to Mangaluruin Karnataka on a daily basis. Kerala reports 193 fresh COVID-19 cases, two deaths

Thiruvananthapuram, July 8 () In the highest ever single day jump in Kerala, as many as 301 people tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday, taking the infection tally to 6,195, state Health Minister K K Shailaja said. While 2,605 people were presently under treatment, as many as 107 were discharged on Wednesday, taking the cumulative recoveries to 3,561,she said in a press release. State capital Thiruvananthapuram recorded the highest number of 64 cases, including 54 from the nearby coastal stretch of Poonthura, where a stringent triple lockdown has been imposed dueto the alarming situation. Tourism Minister Kadakkampally Surendran said there has been a "super spreader" in the coastal region. Fishermen in the area have been asked not to venture out to neighbouring Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu for fishing activities. Commandos, Coast Guard, Coastal Marine Security and Marine Enforcement personnel have been asked to keep a strict watch to ensure that fishing boats do not enter or leave Poonthura area. SAP Commandant in charge L Solomon has been deputed with 25 commandosto monitor the situation. State Director General of Police Loknath Behera has spoken to his Tamil Nadu counterpart J K Tripathi informing him about the situation in Poonthura, a police release said. With increasing cases, the government had imposed a week-long triple lockdown in 100 wards in the city corporation on Monday following whichgovernment offices, including the state Secretariat and various private establishments are shut. Other districts which accounted for more cases during the day are Malappuram (46), Thrissur and Palakkad 25 each, Kannur 22 and Idukki 20, Shailaja said. Of the fresh cases, as many as 99 people had come from abroad and 95 from other states. Ninety people, including 60 from Thiruvananthapuram, were infected through contact. Three health workers, besides nine BSF jawans from Thrissurare among those infected. A total of 1,85,546 people are under observation in various districts, of whom 1,82,409 are in home or institutional quarantine and 3,137 people in hospitals, including 421 admitted on Wednesday, the Health Minister said. The state has ramped up testing and in the last 24 hours 11,250 samples have been examined. Thiruvananthapuram, July 10 () Kerala's COVID-19 tally is inching towards the 7000 mark, with 416 people testing positive on Friday in the highest single day spike of the infection so far, as Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan warned that the situation was "becoming alarming". The day also saw the highest number of cases through contact with infectedpeople-- 204. Of the infected, 123 people had come from abroad and 51 from other states,Vijayan told reporters here after thedaily COVID-19 evaluation meeting. While the total number of infections touched 6,950, at least 3,099are presently under treatment and3,822 have recovered from the disease, including 112 who were discharged today, the CM said. He also said the triple lockdown imposed in Thiruvananthapuram corporation limits has been extended by another week. The state government had on Sunday decided to enforce the lockdown in the capital city following a spike in coronavirus cases. Among the districts where fresh cases were reported Thiruvananthapuram accounted for 122, followed by Alappuzha 50, Malappuram 48, Pathnamthitta 32, Palakkad, Kollam 28, Kannur 23, Ernakulam 20, Thrissur and Kasaragod 17 cases each, Kozhikode and Idukki 12 each and Kottayam seven. In the last 24 hours, over 11,600 samples have been tested and 1.84 lakh people are under observation, 3,517 in hospitals, including 422 admitted today. Over two lakh samples have been sent for testing and results of4,525 samples are awaited. Meanwhile, Prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC have been imposed in Ponnani taluk in Malappuram district to restrict movement of people to check the rising cases of positive cases in the region. Kerala's COVID-19 tally nears 7000-mark

(Eds: Adds CM's quotes) Thiruvananthapuram, May 29 () A health worker, two cabin crew of Air India Express and two prisoners were among the 62 who tested positive in Kerala on Friday, taking the total tally of infections in the state to 1,150. A gulf returnee succumbed to the virus, taking the total number of fatalities in the state to eight. The 65-year-old deceased, hailing from Thiruvalla in Pathanamthitta district, was undergoing treatment at the Kottayam medical college hospital, where he succumbed to the virus early on Friday. Theman had returned from the Gulf on May 11. Of the infected, 33 people had come from various countries while 23 had come from other states, including Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra 10 each, Karnataka, Delhi and Punjab one each and one person was infected through contact, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told reporters here. Palakkad reported 14, Kannur seven, Thrissur and Pathnamthitta six each, while Malappuram and Thiruvanthapuram five each, Kasaragod and Ernakulam four each. Ten people have been treated and discharged from hospitals. The total active cases has touched 577 and 1.24 lakh people are under observation. The government said as many as 12,191 isolation beds were ready in state-run hospitals. Two inmates of special sub-jails in Thiruvananthapuram and Neyyattinkara have tested positive while other prisoners of their block and the police officers are kept under observation. The state government has also opened a centre in all the 14districts forthe prisoners. Allaying the fears of community spread, Vijayan said the government had expected theCOVID-19 cases in the state to rise following ease in lockdown restrictions. But, there is no cause for any worry about community spread as of now, he added. To ascertain if there was any community transmission of the virus, the government had conducted the augmented test as part of sentinel surveillance and 3,128 samples were tested on a single day. Four each had tested positive in sentinel surveillance and Augmented tests. Also this week, out of the 355 positive cases, only 27 were infected due to contact, the CM said. "From May 10 to now, out of the total 644 cases, only 65 are due to contact. This is 10.09 per cent. Out of the total 557 active cases, 45 were infected through contact," he noted. The state government has till now spent Rs 227.35 crore through Medical Service Corporation for COVID-19 management. On the government's preparedness, he said 12,191 isolation beds were ready in government hospitals. Presently,1,080 people are admitted to isolation wards. At least,49,702 beds, 1,369 ICUs and 1,045 ventilators are ready in1,296 government hospitals while in 866 private hospitals there are 81,904 beds, 6,059 ICU beds and 1,578 ventilators, Vijayan said. He reassured that there was nothingto worry with the rise in positive cases as there was only one case through contact out of the 62 casestoday. In the northern Kannur district, the rate of infection was more than the state's average and the government was planning to implement triple lockdown containment measuresas was done in Kasaragod earlier. "If the infection rate through contact in state is around 10 per cent, Kannur has 20 per cent. Out of the total 93 active cases in Kannur, 19 was through contact. The district administration and the health department will have to implement the restrictions in a strict manner there. If the spread increases, we might have to implement triple lockdown," Vijayan said. As per the latest medical bulletin, Palakkad has 117 positive cases, the highest, followed by Kannur with 99 cases. One more COVID-19 death in Kerala; 62 new cases reported

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 12 () Kerala on Sunday reportedmore than 400 positive coronavirus cases for the third consecutive day, taking the tally of infections in the state to 7,873. State Health Minister K K Shailaja said 435 fresh cases were reported with Palakkad (59) topping the list. The state also reported two COVID-19 deaths after the test results of 63-year old Thrissur native who passed away on July 5 and a 52-man from Alappuzha who passed away on July 7, came positive on Sunday. The state has reported 31 deaths so far. "Alappuzha district has 57 cases while Kasaragod has 56 cases. Ernakulam reported 50 cases and Malappuram and Thiruvananthapuram reported 42 and 40 cases respectively," Shailaja said in a release. Out of the 435 new cases, 128 had returned from abroad, 87 came from other states while 206 people contracted the disease through contact. At least 10 health workers and two jawans fromDefence Security Corps (DSC) and CISF were also among the infected. However, 132 people were declared negative of coronavirus on Sunday, taking the total number of those cured to 4,097. "As of now, 3,743 people are under treatment in the state. At least 1,81,784 people are under observation in the state out of which 3,990 are in isolation wards at various hospitals across the state," Minister said. The health department has tested at least 13,478 samples in the last 24 hours, the release said. The government has declared 30 regions in the state as hotspots taking the total number to 222. Meanwhile, the government has decided to implement triple lockdown in containment zones along the coastal areas in the state from July 13 till July 23. "The families in the containment zones will be provided five kg rice free of cost. The essential shops in these areas can function from 10 am to 6 pm. There is a travel ban from 7 pm to 5 am unless it's an emergency," the release said. Kerala reports 435 new COVID-19 cases, tally rises to 7,873

Thiruvananthapuram, June 30 (): Kerala's COVID-19 tally touched 4,442 with 131 people, including nine CISF personnel from Kannur, testing positive on Tuesday, as the Indian Medical Association (IMA) sounded that there were indications of community spread. The death toll in the state has climbed to 24 with the samples of a 76-year-old man, who died on June27 after reaching here from Mumbai, testing positive today. Of the fresh positive cases, 65 had come from abroad and 46 from other states, Health minister K K Shailaja said in a press release. Ten have been infected through contact. According to the release, 2,112 people have recoveredfrom the infection, including 75 who were dischargedtoday,while at least 2,304 are presently under treatment. In Malappuram, where triple lockdown is in force, over 31,000 people are under observation, and 32 cases were reported today. Today Kannur reported 26 cases, Palakkad 17, Kollam 12, Ernakulam 10, Alappuzha nine, Kasaragod eight, Thiruvananthapuram five, Thrissur and Kozhikode four each, Kottayam three and Pathnamthitta one . At least 1,84,6576 people are under observation, of whom 1,81,876 are in home/institutional quarantine and 2,781 in hospitals, including 330 who were hospitalised today. In the last 24 hours, 6076 samples have been tested. According to the release, samples of 2,31,570 people have been tested so far and results of 3872 are awaited. The total hotspotsas of today touched 127. Palakkad has the highest number of total cases-- 277, Malappuram 244, Kannur 204, Kollam 193. In Kannur, 22,664 people are under observation while in Thiruvananthapuram it is 21,424. The Indian Medical Association, Kerala chapter, has written to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan,stating that there are indications of community spread as positive cases have been reported from asymptomatic persons who arrived from other states. Besides, Covid positivity in health care workers who have not treatedthe infected have also been found,IMA said. "Presently, the majority of the tests are being conducted in symptomatic individuals who come from outside the state. So the tests done in our community though are limited, a significant number are positive and cannot be traced to any contacts," IMA said. Hence the number of tests and testing in the community should be increased to 100/Lakh per week and Hotspot and containment zones should be screened with door to door testing, it added. The increasing instances of doctors and other health care workers, including those in the non-covid healthcare facility, getting infected indicates thenecessity for widespread tests in the community, especially doctors and healthcareworkers since they may be asymptomatic carriers, the IMA stated. With the Covid cases increasing in the state, the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) has decided not to allow devotees to offer prayers at the shrines under its control until further orders.
