India’s Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> is re-running the election to contest against India’s leading opposition <keyword id="190679" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-National-Congress">Indian National Congress</keyword>. Several other parties in various states are in the fray including Aam Aadmi Party, <keyword id="399454" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="All-India-Trinamool-Congress">All India Trinamool Congress</keyword>, Telugu Desam Party and Samajwadi party. My wife Sonya and I co-founded The Quorum to be at the intersection of Community, Culture, Collaboration and Creativity. In the early days, I was often told that these 4C’s don’t always intersect in the <keyword id="10997492" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ordinary-course">ordinary course</keyword>, but we remained undeterred, as we were embarking on a venture that was anything but ordinary; creating a <keyword id="2306230" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="third-dimension">Third Dimension</keyword> in the Indian hospitality market. Despite being born and brought up in Delhi, that can be fairly clique-ish in its social construct, I have been fortunate enough to consistently meet new and <keyword id="1850892" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Interesting-People">interesting people</keyword>, but never in the same room. This led me to believe that there are multiple tribes of like-minded folks that don’t have a platform to organically collide and come together on. More often than not, our social lives get restricted to the silos of our work, family and the micro-communities that get formed around where we live, and where our kids go to school. We wanted to change that with The Q, with the Community at the very core of our philosophy, which has over time become what defines us. Even our name, Quorum, is a legal term that means ’the minimum amount of people that are required to make a decision’. Our Quorum was created as a space to coalesce a diverse and <keyword id="10997493" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="interesting-cohort">interesting cohort</keyword> of the curious. Our members make meaningful connections with each other around shared ideas and interests, which is assisted through our programming. An important part of our membership criteria is diversity and we strongly feel that age, gender and backgrounds are not a restrictive factor. While private members’ clubs already exist in India, their member base was curated generations ago and are arguably less relevant to the new India that we know today. Membership for the establishment clubs is more about keeping folks out rather than bringing them in. At The Quorum, we’re less interested in what you have, who you know, or what you do, and instead, are far more intrigued by your personality, interests, passions and stories. There are some interesting parallels with the social change that occurred within the United States in the 1960’s, where people were on the move, just as they are in India today. Our cities today are more transient than they have ever been, as people relocate for work and economic opportunities. Our monthly programming calendar is a labour of love which pieces together unparalleled thought leadership and events across the spectrum of art, fashion, music, literature, tech, business, current affairs and much more. Nusrat Jahan, the most popular Bengali actress was recently elected as the MP for the Trinamool Congress from the Basirhat constituency. Here are some interesting facts about Nusrat Jahan, the actor turned politician. Sweeping victory in 2019 Lok Sabha elections The 2019 Lok Sabha elections saw her winning with a record making margin of more than 3.5 lakh votes than the candidate trailing behind her. Nusrat Jahan Ruhi got 7,82,078 votes in the 2019 parliamentary elections which gave her 54.56% of votes from this constituency. The BJP candidate Sayantan Basu got only 4,31,709 votes with a vote share of 30.12%. In total, there were 13 candidates contesting from this Lok Sabha seat in 2019 elections. The winning story of two friends The story of Nusrat Jahan winning the 2019 Lok Sabha elections turns interesting as she did it together with her close friend Mimi Chakraborthy, yet another model-actress popular from the state of West Bengal. Both the friends contested in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections on behalf of the TMC. While Nusrat Jahan recorded a sweeping victory from the Basirhat seat, Mimi Chakraborty won from the Jadavpur Lok Sabha constituency defeating the BJP candidate Anupam Hazra by 2,95,239 votes. Thus the two friends made their way together to the parliament. Nusrat did not take oath as MP on June 17 and 18 Due to her marriage scheduled around this time in Turkey, Nusrat did not attend the oath-taking ceremony for the MPs in the parliament on June 17 and 18. Her friend Mimi also skipped the event as she participated in her friend’s marriage. Nusrat and her friend Mimi Chakraborty took oath only on June 25, 2019, once Nusrat’s marriage festivities were over. The controversial case On September 30, 2016, her ex-boyfriend Kader Khan was arrested in the case of the Park Street gang rape case four years after the incident was reported. Around this time, Nusrat was in close association with him preparing to tie the knot with him. She and her family are among the estimated 6,000 Indian citizens of Chinese origin living in the country – with about 5,000 of them living in Kolkata, many with Hakka heritage. They are mostly descendants of those who fled to India in the middle of the 19th century to escape turmoil caused by the clash between British forces and Qing dynasty troops known as the <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/article/2075509/dark-legacy-britains-opium-wars-still-felt-today-amid-fight-against" class="link-text">Opium Wars</a> and the bloody rebellion against dynasty known as the Taiping Uprising. One of his strategies has been to attempt to obtain Overseas Indian Citizenship (OCI) for those born before 1950. The OCI, which gives foreign citizens permission to work and live in India indefinitely, will help such individuals avoid having to spend around US$156 annually to renew a permit allowing them to stay in the country. “However, these applications were rejected [by authorities] saying those individuals never showed the need to become an Indian citizen,” he says. “This is false: people applied for passports in the 1960s and were rejected outright. In fact, it was this rejection letter that helped them get other countries’ passports.” Law has been encouraging the community to vote. “Voting is the most important activity if you want to feel part of a country. It differentiates you from a person from another country. It is a sign that you belong here…..For any other Indian, why is it important to vote? Photo: Reuters Liu recalls how her mother saw it coming, her intuition sharpened by listening for Japanese bomber aircraft and running for cover in her village in southern China during the Second World War. “She packed bags full of clothes for each of my siblings and tasked me with equipping them with the bags, when the police came for us,” Liu said. It was 5am when the police knocked on the door and explained that all ethnic Chinese were being rounded up, days before India’s Parliament passed a law that allowed the detention of people assessed to be “of hostile origin”. The Indian government has never released the numbers, so estimates on the number of detainees vary: of the roughly 40,000 Chinese-origin individuals in India at the time, between 3,000 and 10,000 were detained, although no one was successfully prosecuted. Mass deportations to China and migrations to countries like Canada, the US and Australia, mostly from the affluent members of community who were Hakka, followed the detentions. Liu’s family was offered deportation to China soon after internment but her father chose to remain in India. “My mom wanted to go. My daddy didn’t want to. Dad said, “I have nobody in China. Ellias has also written about the need for the Indian government to acknowledge the internment. The Japanese Americans documented their experience and were able to obtain an apology from the US government. The ethnic Chinese in India have been unable to do that. “They have been so marginalised and so few in number and the young people have all migrated at the first opportunity,” he says. “They don’t even have a sense of history or continuity.” Sinking roots But things could be changing. Singapore-based Rinkoo Bhowmick, who founded the CHA project, said she saw younger ethnic Chinese choosing to remain in India instead of migrating to countries like Canada, the US and Australia because the economy was doing well. The CHA project has been attempting a revival of Kolkata’s Old Chinatown in the Tiretta Bazaar area, which is where the first migrants settled, before pollution regulations forced the creation of a New Chinatown in 1910 in Tangra, about 7km away. The project plans to transform the Old Chinatown into a vibrant public space through events and heritage conservation. “The decision of these youngsters to stay back should eventually give rise to a sense of belonging,” Bhowmick said. The winning party BJP invited the families of those killed in the West Bengal political violence which erupted just before the last phase of polling. This move angered Mamata Banerjee the chief minister of the state and the head of Trinamool Congress, who declined an invitation to the attend the ceremony. BJP’s ally in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena slammed Banerjee for this move, in an editorial published in its mouthpiece Saamna.
