I've been riding trains across Europe for 15 years. I love it, but I often watch people make the same 4 mistakes.

I've been riding trains across the US and UK for 26 years. I wish I'd known a few things before my first trip.

But it can also be chaos, especially if other riders are doing things that irritate you.After 26 years of riding trains up and down <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-from-new-york-to-los-angeles-differences-between-coasts-2020-3">both US coasts</a> and across the Midwest, here are seven things I wish passengers would stop doing.<h2 id="14235886-20be-4584-bcb6-20a29c790900">Talking your seat partner's ear off</h2>As is the case on most <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/luxury-bus-vs-regular-bus-review-jet-flixbus-nyc-dc-2023-8">public transportation</a>, you run the risk of happening upon talkative seatmates on trains.I don't usually mind having brief conversations with people near me — it's a shared experience, after all. However, not everyone wants to be social.Forcing someone into conversation for an entire, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-everyone-should-know-before-taking-long-train-77-hours-2022-9">multi-hour train ride</a> can be exhausting. Especially since many people take train rides as a more leisurely and relaxing travel option.If you connect and happen to enjoy the chat, go for it. But consent from both parties is key.<h2 id="77f11438-75f5-4108-8827-fcd148ae6188">Bringing too much luggage</h2><div type="image" title="people rolling luggage down a train platform" height="3032" width="4043" msid="115141208" hostid="261" sizebytes="985670"></div>Similar to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-never-do-booking-travel-credit-card-points-frequent-traveler">air travel</a>, there's limited space on the floor in front of you and in the overhead bins on a train. Try to stick to your fair share of luggage, or plan in advance to check it when you board.On Amtrak, at least, most reservations allow you to bring one bag and two <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/travel/best-carry-on-bag">carry-on items</a>. Of course, you may be able to bring more if you book a private car or upgrade your ticket.People are getting on and off at every stop, so even if your train car looks empty when you board, you should still be mindful of how much space you're taking up.<h2 id="b5ebcca9-76ab-4773-bd72-d6bed4b45ca7">Spreading your things out across a row of seats</h2>Speaking of taking up too much space, spreading all your things across a row (or more) of seats is annoying for fellow passengers.Although there isn't a ton of extra space if you need to unpack something or resituate your luggage, I wish people were more mindful about taking too many seats, blocking the middle aisle, and knocking into the people around them.This also goes for lying down across multiple seats. If you really need to stretch out, go to the café car or observation space, where there's usually a little more room to move around.<h2 id="5dbcf44f-1b63-4716-9029-111dd6c6bae0">Leaving trash and spills for others to clean</h2>There is a sense of "I don't have to do that" on trains and planes when it comes to cleaning up after yourself.It's especially annoying because there are trash receptacles throughout the train, making it easy to organize your space as you go. I usually find them near stairwells, in restrooms, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trying-amtrak-dining-car-meals-review-coast-starlight-photos-2022-10">in the dining car</a>, or at the end of some of the passenger cars.Your trash is your responsibility — the same goes for anything you spill during the trip.<h2 id="745fe03c-be48-4834-84df-12a10fae3705">Trapping people on the stairs or between cars</h2><div type="image" title="space in between cars on an amtrak train" height="2160" width="2880" msid="115141212" hostid="261" sizebytes="81186"></div>Try not to stand in the way of people in the space between cars or on the narrow (sometimes winding) stairwells.As we've established, space is limited, and if you trap someone for too long, they may start to feel unsafe or uncomfortable.It's sometimes unavoidable to momentarily block people as they're getting on and off the train, but otherwise, be mindful and stay aware of your surroundings.<h2 id="86e4b8b0-769e-42d4-98f3-1b30e6ec3924">Watching a video or listening to music without earbuds</h2>If you want to avoid irritating everyone around you, do want you can to reduce your <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pickleball-court-noise-driving-us-all-crazy-scientists-trying-solution-2023-11">noise pollution</a>.You might be fascinated by the cooking video you found on YouTube, but the rest of the passengers probably aren't. And no matter how amazing your taste in music is, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/best-over-ear-headphones">use headphones</a> while you're on the train.This also goes for taking phone calls — no one wants to hear your whole conversation on speakerphone.<h2 id="d2d768c1-361b-4315-978a-afef06de12dc">Taking your shoes off</h2>When you're in a public place that's not a pool or spa, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flight-attendants-why-you-should-never-take-off-shoes-plane-2023-3">taking your shoes off</a> probably isn't going to warrant a pleasant reaction.This is especially true when you're trapped in what's essentially a metal tube for hours.To avoid bothering your fellow train riders, keep your shoes on. I personally wouldn't want my feet touching the floor of a train anyway.

And if you want a stroopwafel, head to our Vismarkt to get one the size of your face for no more than 3 euros.<h2 id="c019bc7a-5dd8-4d5a-9221-9c2a6a7a3950">Amsterdam and Groningen both have some beautiful parks to explore</h2>Vondelpark in Amsterdam is a well-known park as it sits to the side of the famed Rijksmuseum.It's beautiful, but it gets so busy <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.lonelyplanet.com/the-netherlands/amsterdam/vondelpark-and-around/attractions/vondelpark/a/poi-sig/1096921/1323043">with about 12 million visitors a year</a>. It's often full to the brim with children playing, people gathering with food, and folks going on strolls.Fortunately, Groningen has beautiful parks, like Noorderplantsoen, that welcome fewer visitors and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/visited-sarasota-florida-beach-town-great-restaurants-2024-5">feel less crowded</a>.The large public park has a pond surrounded by a playground, lots of grassy spaces, and a little café where you can stop for a coffee or lemonade.On a warm day in the Netherlands, Noorderplantsoen is the place to be — students mingle, families take strolls, and the entire vibe is incredibly carefree.If Noorderplantsoen feels like a bit too much for you, the Prinsentuin is a quieter alternative, especially if you enjoy greenery.The Prinsentuin sits in the center of Groningen — just behind the Martini Tower, the tallest church steeple in the city — and has gardens with benches, archways, a café, and a tea house.<h2 id="7ba15f4e-587d-4385-b544-3dfb404706d4">Both cities are a fine place to enjoy art and culture</h2><div type="image" title="View of Martini Tower from alleyway" height="853" width="1280" msid="112349116" hostid="261" sizebytes="223494"></div>The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is one of the biggest in the world and houses iconic artworks, from Rembrandt's "The Night Watch" to several Van Gogh and Monet paintings.But Groningen also has its own art scene in the form of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.groningermuseum.nl/en/museum">Groninger Museum</a>, a unique building across from the train station that houses an array of modern art pieces, countless exhibitions, and even a Van Gogh of its own.And in Grote Markt (the main square of Groningen) is the <a target="_blank" href="https://forum.nl/?_gl=1*17irw1r*_up*MQ..*_ga*MTEyMTA5ODQyNC4xNzE4MzA3MTY2*_ga_J4GZWWPHS5*MTcxODMwNzE2My4xLjAuMTcxODMwNzE2My4wLjAuMA..">Groninger Forum</a>, which is kind of like the nucleus of the city. It has a library, photo exhibitions, a movie theater that shows foreign films, and countless activities every day of the week.From its rooftop terrace, you can see an incredible view of Groningen, including major landmarks like the Martini Tower, the Vismarkt, and the Grote Markt.

Skip the tourist traps and high prices in Amsterdam — take a short train ride to this beautiful gem instead

I said those words in November 2016. So did a lot of other Americans: so many, in fact, that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/canadian-immigration-site-crash-election-2016-11">Canada's immigration website crashed</a> as votes were being tallied due to increased traffic. No joke. I don't know how many others <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/americans-who-left-us-because-of-trump-talk-biden-presidency-2020-12">followed through on that declaration</a>, but I did. Trump won the election, and 9 months later, I left the US. Full disclosure: Trump becoming president was not the only reason I left — it was also about being fed up with my corporate job, coupled with a strong desire to explore the world. I was 37, single, with no children or pets, so I was free to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/working-mom-quit-job-expat-move-abroad-qatar-singapore-2023-12">quit my job</a>, uproot myself, and take off. I did own a house at the time, which I sold a few months after I left. Upon my departure, I didn't have much of a plan other than the intention to spend some time slowly exploring Asia and teaching English when I needed to make money. Lower-maintenance friends of mine found simpler places for $6 per night in India. Meals usually cost around $3. After six weeks in India, I considered a lunch bill of $5 to be expensive. <h2>There have been times along the way when I've felt lost </h2>From time to time, I experienced stretches of feeling <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/relocation-moved-to-milan-living-abroad-emotionally-exhausting-unspoken-truths-2023-9">unsettled and lacking a sense of purpose</a>. Over the years, I learned that those periods of doubt and uncertainty will continue to surface. But I also learned to just keep trusting, and the way forward would eventually reveal itself. People often ask me if I was ever afraid while <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-women-need-to-know-traveling-solo-southeast-asia-tips-2022-12">traveling alone through Asia</a>. I never was — except a couple of times in India when riding on some precariously high Himalayan roads with no guardrails. But of people? I never had a reason to be. I lived there for 9 months, and I was profoundly happy most of the time. But there were times <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/loneliness-how-to-make-friends-remote-worker-freelancer-new-city-2024-2">I felt lonely</a>. The locals were sweet and kind, with love in their eyes and actions, but I missed friends who spoke my language fluently, with whom I could have deep conversations over a glass of wine. And the dating scene? Siem Reap is not a big city, but after my small-town Myanmar life, it felt like Manhattan. There were so many restaurants, bars, social events, friends, and even some attractive single men. I fell in love with the town, the quality of life, and the locals. It was easy to get a tourist or work visa to live here long term, and it was almost as inexpensive as India and Myanmar. I was living in Siem Reap when COVID-19 hit. By that time, I was in a <keyword id="20752574" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="long-distance-relationship" source="keywords">long-distance relationship</keyword> with a French man I met during my travels. After the closed borders of the pandemic kept us apart for 7 months, I moved to France to be with him. Our story was long and winding, but it felt like destiny. He <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/my-partner-couple-travel-together-full-time-one-date-2024-5">loves global travel</a> like I do. We've been together for four years and are living together in Papua New Guinea. Our plan is to go back to a nomadic slow-travel lifestyle. The S&amp;P 500 just topped 6,000 for the first time ever, and the tech-focused Nasdaq Composite is also in uncharted territory.Traders are convinced that the bulk of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-election-victory-impact-investments-costs-housing-taxes-childcare-2024-11">Trump's economic policies</a>, which include tax cuts and fewer government regulations, will create a business-friendly backdrop that drives stocks higher."Investor sentiment is pro-growth, pro-deregulation, and pro-markets," said David Bahnsen, the chief investment officer at The Bahnsen Group, in recent commentary sent to Business Insider.<h2 id="3e5bdf8a-fc97-4e3d-a950-f23703f0015e">'Animal spirits' have been unleashed</h2>While some are skeptical of the consensus view, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-outlook-trump-president-economy-tariffs-trade-war-kelly-2024-11">including those who are terrified about tariffs</a>, it looks as if investors broadly are scrambling to add exposure to equities. A staggering $22 billion flowed into exchange-traded funds on Wednesday, which was more than four times higher than the previous record for the day after the US election, according to State Street Global Advisors.Markets may hate uncertainty even more than tax hikes, so it's possible that a Kamala Harris win also could have sparked a relief rally.But that might dismiss how ecstatic big-money investors are about another Trump term, given that the S&amp;P 500 rose over 50% from his victory in 2016 until shortly before the pandemic."Business animal spirits could be rekindled once again from Trump's pro-business approach, which could lead to a more robust capital expenditures and investment environment," said Jeff Schulze, the head of economic and market strategy at ClearBridge Investments, in commentary.That term, "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.investopedia.com/terms/a/animal-spirits.asp">animal spirits,</a>" was coined in the 1930s by famed economist John Maynard Keynes, who remarked that investors' decisions are often driven by intense emotions like greed and fear.Anthony Saglimbene, Ameriprise's chief market strategist, borrowed Keynes' famous phrase to make the same point as Schulze: investors may be euphoric for the foreseeable future."Animal spirits through year-end could push major averages higher as the overhang of the election is removed and investors look to put excess cash to work in stocks," Saglimbene said in commentary.<h2 id="648d2368-71e0-40ed-9ed5-95b7faf9578c">How to invest after Trump's win</h2>Although the US economy <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/economy-outlook-tariffs-trump-trade-war-slowdown-jpmorgan-david-kelly-2024-10">looks healthy by most measures</a>, many market strategists are counting on an even bigger boom under Trump that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stocks-to-buy-election-investing-strategy-2016-comparison-morgan-stanley-2024-11">would benefit economically sensitive stocks</a>."This broad 'risk-on' mood for the U.S. stock market is cutting across all sectors, but particularly favoring more cyclically sensitive sectors that would benefit from a re-strengthening of the economy and tailwinds to corporate profitability," said Jim Baird, the chief investment officer at Plante Moran Financial Advisors, in written commentary sent to BI.Sectors that are heavily reliant on economic growth, like energy and financials, will stay hot, said Sébastien Page, the head of global multi-asset at T. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A YouTuber has been slammed for uploading a video titled "I Travelled Across Japan For Free."</li><li>Fidias Panayiotou filmed himself hiding in a toilet to hitch a free train ride, among other things.</li></ul>YouTuber <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@FidiasPanayiotou/featured">Fidias Panayiotou</a> has been dragged online after he said he traveled across Japan "for free" — by begging for cash and hitching free rides on trains.Panayiotou, who is better known by his YouTube username "Fidias," uploaded the video titled "I Travelled Across Japan For Free" on October 20.The video, which was viewed by Insider, showed Panayiotou and three other YouTubers competing in an "Amazing Race"-style challenge across Japan. Panayiotou did not specify when the video was filmed, or if he and the other content creators are still in Japan.YouTube has since removed Panayiotou's <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dg_TKW3sS1U">video</a>, saying it violated the platform's community guidelines. Excerpts and screengrabs from the original video, however, have been reposted on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzUDKBolwXY">YouTube</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/mrjeffu/status/1716300063146971159">X</a>, formerly known as Twitter. While part of Panayiotou's journey across Japan was done by hitchhiking at bus or gas stations, the YouTuber also filmed himself riding on Japan's public transportation system, saying he did so without paying. Earlier in the video, Panayiotou said he'd been detained at a police station after he told officers he didn't have enough money to pay for his bus fare. A stranger had previously given Panayiotou 600 Japanese yen — around $4 — but he was still 50 cents short of the full fare. Panayiotou also told viewers about his hack for riding Japanese trains for free. "I'm entering the train, and I will find a toilet, and go straight to the toilet," he continued, before cutting to a shot of him locking himself in the bathroom. Later, Panayiotou said he was caught by a train conductor for traveling without a ticket. He told viewers that he feigned illness before making a run for it, and boarding another train, where he also hid in a bathroom to dodge train conductors. Panayiotou also filmed himself getting what he said was a free breakfast at a hotel he wasn't staying at. "I went up to the rooms to check the number so that I could use it as a passcode for the breakfast," Panayiotou told viewers. "And it worked. I just have access to a five-star Japanese buffet," Panayiotou narrated over footage of himself eating in the hotel's restaurant. "And we're leaving the hotel without getting caught and without any problem."Panayiotou's actions have been slammed by people online, with some criticizing the YouTuber for giving the Japanese people a bad impression of Westerners."I hate it. Popularizing cunning and thievery. And transferring it from Western culture and presenting it as something cool, completely pisses me off," one person <a href="https://x.com/Tomasz35469770/status/1716474412268941711?s=20">wrote</a> on X. Some pointed out that this isn't the first time Panayiotou has talked about his hacks for hitching free rides on public transport. In October 2022, Panayiotou uploaded a video titled "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdRAqfj88IM">I Traveled Across The Entire UK For Free</a>" where he traveled from Brighton to London by stowing away in a bus's luggage compartment. "Hello beautiful people, I apologize to the Japanese people if we made them feel bad that was not our goal!" Panayiotou wrote in a comment on the now-removed video, per the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-67213167">BBC</a>. But a spokesperson from Kyushu Railway Company, a regional train operator, told <a href="https://www.barrons.com/news/japan-railways-probes-free-riding-foreign-youtubers-e92dc0b2">AFP</a> that the company will review Panayiotou's video before they decide to lodge a police report. "We are aware of the case and investigating facts around it," the spokesperson told AFP. Panayiotou has been posting videos on YouTube since 2019 and currently has 2.38 million subscribers on his channel. The self-described "Professional Mistake Maker" went viral earlier this year when he <a href="https://www.insider.com/elon-musk-finally-meets-hugs-superfan-2023-1">managed to get a hug</a> from billionaire <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/elon-musk">Elon Musk</a>, after <a href="https://www.insider.com/youtuber-hug-elon-musk-viral-tiktok-videos-2022-12">camping outside Twitter's headquarters</a> for months. A spokesperson from YouTube told Insider that they have removed five of Panayiotou's videos for violating the platform's policy. The <a href="https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2801964?hl=en&amp;ref_topic=9282436">policy</a> states that "instructional theft videos posted with the express intent to steal physical goods or get something for free are not allowed on YouTube," the spokesperson said."YouTube has well established Community Guidelines that outline what isn't allowed on our platform and we apply them consistently regardless of the channel or creator," the spokesperson said, adding that Panayiotou's channel has been issued a warning in accordance with YouTube's <a href="https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2802032?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">three-strike policy</a> on terminating accounts.
