WTO trade index hits a record low, signals that a global V-shaped recovery is unlikely

New Delhi, The National Stock Exchange (NSE) on Monday cautioned investors against some fraudsters running illegal <keyword id="93391" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dabba-trading" source="Orion">dabba trading</keyword> with guaranteed returns to investors. Dabba trading is an illegal form of trading in shares, where operators of such trading rings allow people to trade in equities outside the stock exchange platform. The cautionary statements came after NSE found that the entities -- Shri Parasnath Commodity Private Limited, Shri Parasnath Bullion Private Limited, Faary Tale Trading Private Limited and Bharat Kumar (associated with Trade with Trust) --were providing dabba or <keyword id="721899" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="illegal-trading" source="Orion">illegal trading</keyword> platform with assured returns. The exchange said that these persons are not registered either as a member or authorised persons of any registered member of the NSE. Moreover, a police complaint has been lodged in this regard. Cautioning investors, NSE asked them not to subscribe to any such scheme or product offered by any person or entity offering guaranteed returns in the stock market as the same is prohibited by law. "Investors are cautioned and advised not to trade on such illegal trading platforms. Participation in such illegal platforms is at the investor's own risk, cost and consequences as such illegal trading platforms are neither approved nor endorsed by the exchange," the bourse said. For any kind of disputes relating to such prohibited schemes, mechanisms such as benefits of investor protection under the exchange's jurisdiction, exchange dispute resolution mechanism and investor grievance redressal mechanism administered by the exchange, would not be available to investors, it added.

NSE cautions investors against 'dabba' trading

New Delhi, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal on Friday said India is ready to trade in Indan Rupee with countries which are facing currency failure or have dollar shortage. Speaking after the unveiling of Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023 which seeks to increase India's exports to USD 2 trillion by 2030, the secretary also said the government is focusing on strengthening the rupee payment system. Changes have been made in the FTP to allow international trade settlement in Indian Rupee with a view to making INR a global currency. Addressing the gathering, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal exuded confidence that the export target of USD 2 trillion by 2030 will be met. He stressed that any industry cannot succeed only on the basis of subsidy or crutches. In the coming days, the idea of exports will change in the country, Goyal said. FTP 2023 has been announced to provide policy continuity and a responsive framework, said Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) Santosh Sarangi. The FTP has also introduced an amnesty scheme for one-time settlement of default in export obligation by Advance Authorisation and EPCG authorisation holders. All pending cases of the default in meeting export obligation (EO) of authorisations mentioned can be regularised by the authorisation holder on payment of all customs duties that were exempted in proportion to unfulfilled EO and interest at the rate of 100 per cent of such duties exempted. However, no interest is payable on the portion of Additional Customs Duty and Special Additional Customs Duty. Policy for export of dual use items under Special Chemicals, Organisms, Materials, Equipment and Technologies (SCOMET) has been consolidated at one place for ease of understanding and compliance by industry. SCOMET policy emphasises India's export control in line with its international commitments under various export control regimes (Wassenaar arrangement, Australia group and Missile Technology Control Regime) to control trade in sensitive/dual use items/technology.

Trump's favorite trade scorecard worsened in May as exports hit lowest level since 2009

New Delhi, India's <keyword id="35090" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exports" source="Orion">exports</keyword> contracted by 12.7 per cent, third month in a row, to USD 34.66 billion in April even as the <keyword id="113688" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trade-deficit" source="Orion">trade deficit</keyword> reduced to a 20-month low of USD 15.24 billion, the government data showed on Monday. The decline in exports is mainly on account of poor demand in India's key destinations -- the Europe and the US -- and it may take some more months for the situation to improve. The demand scenario is "not looking very good as far as Europe is concerned, and the US also we have seen a decline in demand. For the next 2-3 months, I think the demand scenario does not look very optimistic," DGFT (Director General of Foreign Trade) Santosh Kumar Sarangi told reporters here. However, he expressed hope that things would change from September onwards. "There is a possibility that opening up of Chinese economy combined with some boost in demand in the Europe and the US economy from August-September onwards might give a boost to global exports," he said. Imports too declined by about 14 per cent, fifth month in a row, to USD 49.9 billion as against USD 58.06 billion recorded in the same month last year, the data showed. Trade deficit in April last year stood at USD 18.36 billion. The previous lowest level was recorded in August 2021, when the deficit stood at USD 13.81 billion. On imports, Sarangi said that the decline is because of cooling down of commodity prices and reduced demand for products which are considered as discretionary like gems and jewellery. He suggested to diversify into products which have higher export demand, such as electronic goods, oil meals, oil seeds, and agricultural goods. He added that export sectors which may get impacted in the coming months include gems and jewellery, apparel and garments, and some engineering products. In April, export sectors which recorded negative growth included petroleum products, gems and jewellery, engineering goods, chemicals and ready-made garments of all textiles. However, electronic goods, pharma, rice and oil meals registered positive growth. The shipments of electronic goods increased by 26.49 per cent to USD 2.11 billion in the month under review. Under merchandise exports, only 11 of the 30 key sectors exhibited positive growth in April and at imports front, 23 out of 30 key sectors recorded negative growth. Crude oil imports dipped by 13.95 per cent to USD 15.17 billion. Gold imports too contracted by 41.48 per cent to USD 1 billion in April. India's exports to the US in April declined by 17.16 per cent to USD 5.9 billion. Similarly to the UAE it dipped by 22 per cent to USD 2.23 billion in April. The other key export destinations where exports reported negative growth included China, Singapore, Bangladesh, and Germany. Further, the commerce ministry has revised upwards the overall trade figures for 2022-23. According to the ministry's data, exports of goods and services in 2022-23 rose by 14.68 per cent to USD 775.87 billion (earlier it was USD 770 billion) as against USD 676.53 billion in 2021-22. Imports increased by 17.65 per cent to USD 894.19 billion, leaving a trade deficit of USD 118.31 billion in 2022-23. Merchandise exports increased by 6.74 per cent to USD 450.43 billion, while imports rose by 16.47 per cent to USD 714 billion in the last fiscal. Services exports rose 27.86 per cent to USD 325.44 billion, while imports increased by 22.54 per cent to USD 180 billion in the last fiscal. Services exports in April this year were estimated at USD 30.36 billion, as compared to USD 24.05 billion in April 2022. The estimated value of services import in April was USD 16.50 billion as compared to USD 14.06 billion in April 2022.

More importantly, rising domestic production reduces U.S. demand for foreign oil and places downward pressure on imports. Despite this new trend, the United States still imported three times more petroleum products than it exported in July, so higher oil prices in August likely boosted imports more than exports. At the same time, persistent troubles across much of Europe and weakness in several emerging markets has restrained export growth and should contribute to the trade deficit widening to $40.6 billion."

Included in DealBook's report published Friday were findings that congressional trades in stock options doubled in value and cryptocurrency purchases soared. Overall, politicians and their immediate families purchased $267 million and sold $364 million worth of assets, with the information compiled by researchers at Capitol Trades for DealBook. The figures were lower than in 2020. Roughly 60% of the trades were in company stocks, with the rest split among funds, bonds and other assets. Republicans bought $100 million worth of stocks and Democrats purchased $75 million worth of stocks, according to the average of ranges lawmakers provide in official disclosures. DealBook's report arrived two days after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/we-are-free-market-economy-pelosi-rejects-stock-ban-congress-2021-12">rejected the idea of barring members of Congress</a> and their spouses from trading stocks."We are a free-market economy. Leading blockchain and cryptocurrency platform Binance on Friday announced that it has temporarily suspended all spot trading on its platform as it works to resolve an issue. "We are aware of an issue impacting spot trading on Binance. All spot trading is currently temporarily suspended as we work to resolve this as soon as possible. New updates will be shared here," the company tweeted. Moreover, the CEO of Binance, <keyword id="6222251" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Changpeng-Zhao" source="Orion">Changpeng Zhao</keyword> from his Twitter account @cz_binance shared an update saying that the <keyword id="6286377" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crypto-exchange" source="Orion">crypto exchange</keyword> "encountered a bug on a trailing stop order". "Initial analysis indicates matching engine encountered a bug on a trailing stop order (a weird one)," Zhao tweeted. "Recovering. Est 30-120 min ish. Waiting for more precise ETA. Deposits &amp; withdrawals are paused as a SOP (standard operating procedure). Funds are #SAFU," he added. Binance commands over 60 per cent of all crypto spot volume. According to Arcane Research, the world's largest crypto exchange has also increased its market share of Bitcoin spot volume to over 90 per cent in recent quarters, because of zero commission.

A record jump in imports drove the deficit — US imports grew 10.9% in July to $231.7 billion. At the same time, exports increased 8.1% to $168.1 billion, according to the release. The report is the latest to show that the US economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic and ensuing recession has an uncertain path ahead and will likely come in fits and starts. And, US trade deficits with other countries increased.The US trade deficit with China grew $1.6 billion to $28.3 billion in July, driven by a jump in imports, according to the report. At the same time the US trade deficit with Mexico increased $2.5 billion to $11.5 billion.

A new FAQ page that discussed the brokerage payment was created, but stated that its revenue from payment for order flow was "indirect" and "negligible," the complaint read.
