Karnataka on Tuesday banned strike by workers of Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) at its Bidadi plant and directed the management to lift the lockout for resuming production soon.<br /><br />"I have directed the Toyota workers' union to withdraw its strike and told the <keyword id="4081652" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="company-management">company management</keyword> to lift the week-long lockout declared on November 10 to resume production soon," state Deputy Chief Minister C.N. <ul class="summary-list"><li>I tested a 2020 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/toyota">Toyota</a> Highlander, priced at $44,498 for the well-appointed XLE trim level.</li><li>The Highlander I sampled has a reasonably potent 296-horsepower V6 engine, decent seating for eight passengers, and ample cargo capacity with the third row of seats dropped.</li><li>The Highlander is the classic "don't think about it" mid-size mass-market <keyword id="45454" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="SUV">SUV</keyword>.</li><li>It won't have you jumping for joy, but it shouldn't keep you up at night worried about whether it will fail at its duties: delivering rock-solid reliability and family-friendly versatility.</li></ul><p><keyword id="6374528" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="toyota">Toyota</keyword> has a reputation for being the brand you buy when you don't want to think about it too much. The company will sell you everything from a subcompact hatchback (Yaris) to a sports car (Supra) to a full-size pickup (Tundra) to a car that runs on hydrogen (Mirai). Toyota has done the brain work for you; all you have to do is show up and drive off.</p><p>That might sound ... a little depressing, especially if you see cars as emotional purchases. The mid-size crossover sits smack in the middle of the most important market in the US, bracketed by the compact RAV4 and the off-road optimized 4Runner and the full-size Sequoia. Sales have typically been robust: Toyota has sold well over 200,000 Highlanders in each of the past three years.</p><p>This SUV has been in the lineup since 2000, and the fourth generation was unveiled last year. I recently checked out a 2020 Highlander XLE, a step up from the base L and LE trims. The starting price was $41,200, and a brief list of options took the as-tested sticker to $44,498. (The cheapest Highlander is about $35,000, while the top-dog Platinum is almost $47,000, and there are hybrid choices in the range, all of which tack on a grand or so to their trim level's cost.)</p><h2>The Highlander isn't taking any chances in a tough segment</h2><div type="image" title="2020 Toyota Highlander XLE" height="1500" width="2000" msid="78682952" hostid="261"></div><p>Competition in this segment is brutal. The Highlander jousts with the Honda Pilot, the Subaru Ascent, the VW Atlas, the Ford Explorer, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2020-kia-telluride-review-price-specs-suv-horsepower-three-row-2020-9">wildly popular new Kia Telluride</a>. Mass-market mid-size SUV customers are looking for seating capacity, cargo space, reliability, decent technology, and a reasonable price tag. </p><p>Toyota has traditionally not thrilled its partisans so much as reassured them. And the 2020 Highlander is a case in point: this crossover has been improved in all the right places, but, stacked up again the Pilot, the Ascent, or especially the Telluride, it lacks thrills. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Toyota Highlander XLE" height="819" width="1092" msid="78682955" hostid="261"></div><p>By design, really. Because on the other hand, the overall experience of driving the Highlander around in its natural, suburban environment is one of reassurance, indeed. The only significant thought I had during the week Toyota loaned me the vehicle was, "Yep, this here is a good truck."</p><p>By never doing anything wrong, Toyota gets a lot right.</p><h2>An exterior that's attractive without calling attention to itself</h2><div type="image" title="2020 Toyota Highlander XLE" height="1500" width="2000" msid="78682957" hostid="261"></div><p>For what it's worth, my attractive "Moon Dust" Highlander, with a "Graphite" interior, was built with pride in Indiana, making it an American-made SUV with a Japanese badge. The styling is consistent with what Toyota has been doing across its portfolio: enhancing the angles, sharpening the corners, and accentuating the folds in the sheet metal, without going too crazy.</p><p>Decades of studying Toyotas have given me the tendency to find them unexciting, but of late, there's been more jazz in the aesthetics. Older Highlanders are bland boxes that never broke down, while the 2020 version has added some visual attitude — and will probably never break down.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Toyota Highlander XLE" height="1500" width="2000" msid="78682964" hostid="261"></div><p>For example, the gently-sloping roof ends in a spoiler atop the hatch, and there are character lines that define the rear haunches. My tester had 18-inch alloy wheels, and they didn't really fill the arches, but they looked fairly sharp.</p><p>The LED headlights were very effective, punching through the darkness and offering automatic high beams.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Toyota Highlander XLE" height="1503" width="2000" msid="78682973" hostid="261"></div><p>Inside, the Highlander combines comfort with seating capacity; my tester had three rows, and they were all pretty cushy without being plush. I didn't have the captain's chairs for the second row, but rather a bench, meaning that on paper, my SUV could handle eight occupants.</p><p>The fronts were heated, and the third row was predictably useless for grownups while diminishing cargo space (at 16 cubic feet, it isn't terrible, but drop the third row and you have 48 cubic feet — and drop the second row and you have a whopping 84). The liftgate in the tester was powered, something I always find helpful.</p><h2>A good engine, a good transmission, and decent MPGs</h2><div type="image" title="2020 Toyota Highlander XLE" height="1500" width="2000" msid="78682981" hostid="261"></div><p>Under the hood, the Highlander XLE has a 3.5-liter V6 engine, making 295 horsepower with 263 pound-feet of torque, all sent through an eight-speed automatic to the all-wheel-drive system (a less potent four-cylinder is also on the menu, as well as the hybrids). This is a rock-solid motor that yields good if not stunning fuel economy, at 20 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg combined. </p><p>Speed isn't the Highlander's skill set (a zippier XSE trim is slated for next year). I observed a 0-60 mph time in the eight-second ballpark, but if you don't lay on the throttle, nine might be more realistic. However, the Highlander XLE, which weighs in at around 4,500 lbs., can tow 5,000. That's plenty for a small camper or trailer.</p><h2>Technology, but not state-of-the-art</h2><div type="image" title="2020 Toyota Highlander XLE" height="1500" width="2000" msid="78682986" hostid="261"></div><p>I own two Toyotas, so I'm more than accustomed to the company's defiantly-not-industry-leading infotainment system. In the Highlander, it runs on an eight-inch central touchscreen, with additional buttons to swap menus. It gets the job done.</p><p>Bluetooth pairing is easy, GPS navigation is accurate (but you have to watch it with Toyota, as the mapping provides you with three routes and the quickest choice can be vexing), there are the usual USB ports from device connectivity, and my tester was outfitted with a wireless charge pad.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Toyota Highlander XLE" height="1498" width="1997" msid="78682990" hostid="261"></div><p>Apple CarPlay is available if you need a fallback from the in-house system, and my tester had a premium audio system that sounded pretty good, it not remarkable.</p><p>The SUVs can be outfitted with a host of driver-assist features, from adaptive cruise control with steering assist to lane-departure warnings and blind-spot alerts.</p><h2>There isn't much the Highlander can't handle, and that's why you buy it</h2><div type="image" title="2020 Toyota Highlander XLE" height="1503" width="2000" msid="78682994" hostid="261"></div><p>After a week of driving the Highlander hither and yon, I ended up exactly where I thought I'd be: satisfied and, you guessed it, reassured. </p><p>I've literally never heard anyone enthuse over their Highlander, although I know more than a few folks who've been quietly enjoying the SUV for nearly a decade. I myself was tempted by a Highlander hybrid last year when I went Toyota shopping. (I ended up the RAV4 hybrid.) </p><p>Toyota sells a lot of Highlanders every year because there's nothing you can throw at this mid-size SUV it can't handle, apart from trying to squeeze adults into row three. It's just fine for running errands, just fine for Costco runs, just fine for taking kids to school or activities, just fine at hauling around a moderate amount of gear, just fine at towing stuff, just fine at taking road trips, and if you absolutely, positively need to get off the asphalt and deal with some unimproved terrain, you'll be OK in the Highlander.</p><p>Look, I know it isn't the coolest crossover on the market, and it isn't really fun to drive. Its sibling, the 4Runner, is a better choice if you intend to tackle the backwoods. </p><p>But if I had to buy a mid-size crossover tomorrow and didn't want to think about it, I'd buy a Highlander. My heart wouldn't be racing, but I'd be able to sleep at night.</p>

But its ability to age gracefully is part of the appeal.</li></ul><p>As I crawled around the parking lot of a local construction project abandoned long before the windows even went in, camera in one hand and trying to avoid a trail of ants with the other, a familiar red car pulled up. Some old friends had spotted me as they drove by, pulling into the lot to check out my funky green car for the week. It was, admittedly, a hard car to miss. </p><p>It was golden hour on the last day of my loan - that nail-biting time when the sun is not too high, not too low, and emitting the perfect amount of color to accentuate a vehicle with a good paint job - and I didn't have much time to finish my photo set. I didn't really have the extra minutes to let them tour the car, but I also didn't have the extra minutes to explain that.</p><p>I tossed over the key and decided to talk and take detail shots at the same time, hopefully leaving me a few minutes for some final exterior photos once the tour was done. They hopped into the front seats while telling me about their search for a sporty new car like this one. The 2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition, or the "Ha-what?" for those who don't regularly keep up with the Cult of Green Cars and Gold Wheels (I keep telling my comrades we need a shorter name if we want to grow our membership), <a href="https://jalopnik.com/that-stunning-british-racing-green-toyota-86-limited-ed-1834414225">arrived in the US</a> as one of the final hurrahs for the first generation of the Toyota 86 and its mirror image at Subaru, the BRZ. </p><p>The cars share a 205-horsepower, four-cylinder Subaru boxer engine and offer a choice between two six-speed transmissions: a manual or an automatic. While the regular 86 starts at $27,060, the special-edition Hakone's base model will run you $29,870.</p><p>With options like a $1,100 exhaust system, $550 sway bar, and $75 air filter from the Toyota's TRD performance arm, my loaner for the week came to $32,778.</p><div type="image" title="2022 Subaru RBZ, 2019 BRZ, 2020 Toyota 86" height="944" width="3983" msid="81197955" hostid="261"></div><p>The jointly developed Toyobaru Twins, as they're called, <a href="http://automobilemag.com/news/details-and-photos-of-subaru-brz-released-before-tokyo-debut-90973/">debuted way back in 2011</a> - making them so old that the 86 was branded as the Scion FR-S when it came onto the market. Scion, Toyota's <a href="https://jalopnik.com/the-youth-brand-thing-isnt-working-so-scion-could-go-pr-1666750273#_ga=1.248017031.1273901456.1445270859">largely failed attempt</a> to appeal to the kids, has been dead <a href="https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/scion-is-dead/">for five years</a>. </p><p>The Toyobaru Twins have aged well nonetheless, to the point that Subaru's <a href="https://www.subaru.com/2022-brz">second-generation BRZ for 2022</a>, which will arrive in dealerships this fall, doesn't look much different than the outgoing car. A second-generation Toyota 86 <a href="https://carbuzz.com/news/all-new-2022-toyota-86-reveal-delayed#:~:text=And%20thus%20the%20decision%20has,by%20a%20full%20six%20months.&amp;text=Official%20details%20are%20non%2Dexistent,identical%20to%20the%20latest%20BRZ.BRZ.">hasn't debuted yet</a>.</p><div type="image" title="Toyota 86 Hakone Edition 2020" height="2457" width="3976" msid="81197961" hostid="261"></div><p>But my bewildered friends were right. The 86 <em>was</em> showing its age - not so much on the outside, but on the inside, which likely would have been subpar even in 2011 among people who value volume knobs and clock displays from this century.</p><p>Inside, the red glow of the buttons is more reminiscent of an old alarm clock than anything meant to add sporty appeal. The user friendliness of the infotainment screen reminds me of the days when I regularly used an iPod shuffle, minus the nostalgia. The interior buttons and switches don't have a nice, weighted clink; they feel like relative improvement over a Barbie cash register. Rather than a volume knob, the 86 has volume buttons.</p><div type="image" title="Toyota 86 Hakone Edition 2020" height="2678" width="4655" msid="81197971" hostid="261"></div><p>Have you ever sat in a car and poked your grimy index finger at a little plus sign instead of cranking the volume knob when a real banger comes on the radio? Dear reader, it is the opposite of cool.</p><p>And yet, when my friends noticed the very same surface flaws I did, I felt the need to justify them - and justify the 86 itself.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition" height="2730" width="4001" msid="81197982" hostid="261"></div><p>See, the 86 is beautiful, both literally and metaphorically. Its deep British Racing Green paint - inspired by, you guessed it, <a href="https://driving.ca/jaguar/auto-news/news/the-surprising-irish-connection-to-british-racing-green">British motor racing</a> - sparkles with all of the warm yellows it can pick up in its reflection. Its bronze wheels contain more shades than the color grey (oh, were they not talking about colors there?), and when the golden hour sun strikes them, they glow. </p><p>When you open the door, you're greeted with an interior so gorgeously styled that you almost don't notice its aging features. Strips of tan material slice through the black upholstery, and the contrast stitching truly contrasts: On black leather, it's tan, on tan leather, it's black. That, accompanied by the tan leather key holder with black contrast stitching and an "86" imprint so deep an ant could swim in it, makes the car feel like it was designed with care, not just put through a color configurator to please car nerds who like green and gold. </p><div type="image" title="Toyota 86 Hakone Edition 2020" height="2421" width="3996" msid="81197996" hostid="261"></div><p>The car's exhaust sound will alert everyone around you to the proven fact that you're a Very Serious Driver without being too obnoxious, which is a plus for your neighbors. From inside, its loud, low growl feels almost numb, like you're in the mouth of a dinosaur whose limbs you control. </p><p>And those limbs are jumpy. Nothing about the 86 feels particularly smooth. Shifting is less buttery throw, more notchy placement. The catch point on the clutch is short, making it feel less like engaging first gear and more like swiping at it, hoping you'll catch something. </p><div type="image" title="Toyota 86 Hakone Edition 2020" height="2404" width="4006" msid="81197999" hostid="261"></div><p>For a casual street car, the 86 Hakone is rigid. The seats are hard; the driving position is stiff. The throttle is bitey. Despite car enthusiasts complaining about the car's low power output for as long as it's had a power output, the 86 feels like it would take a chunk out of you if it had teeth - perfect for a buyer who prefers something a little raw over the refined six-speed manuals that can be found elsewhere.</p><p>What makes the 86 so special, I told my friends as their eyes betrayed boredom, is that Toyota doesn't need the car in its lineup. It was the brand's <a href="https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-motor-north-america-reports-december-2020-year-end-sales/">second-worst seller</a> in the US in 2020, saved only by the 2021 Mirai, a new hydrogen fuel cell vehicle that <a href="https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-introduces-second-generation-mirai-fuel-cell-electric-vehicle-as-design-and-technology-flagship-sedan/">debuted as a California-only offering</a>. Toyota sold 499 Mirais in 2020, while sales for the 86 and any leftover Scion FR-S models totaled 2,476. The Yaris, which was <a href="https://www.toyota.com/yaris-family/">discontinued in 2020</a>, sold 6,437 units. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition" height="2667" width="4000" msid="81198000" hostid="261"></div><p>The all-powerful Camry? Toyota sold more than 294,000 of them last year, down from nearly 337,000 in 2019.</p><p>At 2,267 US units <a href="https://media.subaru.com/pressrelease/1703/117/subaru-america-inc-announces-december-2020-year-end">sold</a> in 2020, Subaru of America moved even fewer BRZ models than Toyota did the 86. It was Subaru of America's worst seller last year, with the WRX sport compact car bringing up second-to-last place at 21,178 - a difference of nearly 19,000 cars.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition" height="2529" width="3992" msid="81198007" hostid="261"></div><p>The 86 is not a car Toyota is going to put all of its research and development into because it's not a car that gets shoveled on and off of dealership lots, meaning its features and appeal are going to age while it's on the market. </p><p>Sure, the 86 is a machine created for profit by a company that exists for profit. But to have the 86 on market at all is a blessing upon car enthusiasts, and the Hakone Edition is a stunning way to bestow it. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition" height="2264" width="3978" msid="81198015" hostid="261"></div><p>As my friends drove off and the sun slipped behind the Planet Fitness, taking my camera out of commission for the day, I fired up the 86 to head home.</p><p>Its low growl gurgled around me as I drove through the trail of ants I'd tried so hard to avoid before, and I thought about what a special place it occupied on the car market: just on the cusp of obsolete as manual transmissions fade and electrification rises, yet still preparing for a new generation in the meantime. </p><div type="image" title="Toyota 86 Hakone Edition 2020" height="2162" width="4012" msid="81198018" hostid="261"></div><p>The Toyobaru Twins are like wine, and that probably has something to do with their survival. New Delhi, Mar 2 () Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) on Monday reported a 9.1 per cent decline in total vehicle sales at 11,356 units in February as against 12,497 units in the same month last year.<p> In the domestic market, the company posted sales of 10,352 units last month, down 11.9 per cent from 11,760 units in February 2019, TKM said in a statement.</p><p> "We have smoothly transitioned to BS-VI manufacturing and started delivering BS-VI vehicles to our customers before the stipulated deadline of April 2020. A total of 31,853 BS-VI vehicles have been dispatched to our dealerships till date," TKM Senior Vice President (Sales and Service) Naveen Soni said.</p><p> In order to make the transition smoother for customers, the company has offered introductory pricing so as to not pass on the full increase of BS-VI product price at one go, he added.</p><p> The BS-VI petrol Yaris and Glanza have been well received last month while the company's flagship brands Innova Crysta and Fortuner continue to do well, Soni said.</p><p> "As we prepare to meet the evolving market sentiments, our efforts are to ramp up production to improve deliveries," he added.</p><p> Soni said in order to smoothen the transition, the company introduced the BS-VI Innova Crysta in January this year at an introductory offer.</p><p> "We have chosen not to pass on the full impact of an increase in cost to the consumers at the launch. We had to take a difficult decision, that we will not transfer the price in one go, we will have a stage-wise implementation. Having said that, in the long run, we would be forced to increase our prices in the mid-term," he noted.</p> Accordingly, while the consumer acceptance of BS-VI so far has been positive, the challenge in the upcoming months is to see how the customers will accept the full increased pricing once the introductory offer is phased out, Soni said. Toyota Kirloskar Motor sales decline 9 pc in February

New Delhi, Jan 28 () Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) on Tuesday said its Bidadi (Karnataka) manufacturing plant has become fully BS VI compliant.
<p>The company had introduced its first BS VI compliant petrol variant of Glanza premium hatchback in June 2019.
</p><p>This was followed by the start of production of BS VI compliant petrol variant of mid sized sedan Yaris in December 2019 and the BS VI diesel variant of Innova Crysta earlier this month, TKM said in a statement.
</p><p>The recent commencement of production of BS VI diesel variant of Toyota Fortuner marks the company's full and final transition into a 100 per cent BS VI manufacturing facility, it added.
</p><p>Bookings for BS VI vehicles have already commenced and deliveries of BS VI diesel vehicles to customers would be made in a phased manner, depending on diesel BS VI fuel availability, the company said.
</p><p>"In our efforts to make a smooth transition to BS VI emission norms for vehicles, we are delighted to announce a full compliance to BS VI well ahead of time," TKM Senior Vice President Naveen Soni said.
</p><p>The company has been successful in upgrading its vehicles to BS VI technology before the stipulated timelines thereby allowing it to focus on the production and sale of BS VI vehicles, he added.
</p>"We are confident that this will further augment customer confidence in the brand and encourage them to adopt environment friendly BS VI technology in our vehicles," Soni said.   MSS

New Delhi, Jan 12 () Toyota Kirloskar Motor expects auto industry growth to pick up only in the third quarter of this year as consumers would try to understand the new BS-VI technology and associated cost increases when it is implemented in April, according to a senior company official.
<p> The company, which had recently launched the BS-VI version of its popular multi-purpose vehicle Innova Crysta, said it will be rolling out diesel variants of other models such as Fortuner by the end of this month or early February.
</p><p> "At least for the first two quarters, for the customers it is going to be understanding of the new technology. The fundamentals are strong, so by the third quarter it should start picking up," Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) Senior Vice-President (Sales &amp; Service) Naveen Soni told .
</p><p> He was responding to a query on the outlook for 2020 for the auto industry in general and also for the company in the backdrop of the transition to BS-VI emission norms from April 1.
</p><p> The automobile industry recorded its worst-ever sales decline in two decades in 2019, with an unprecedented slowdown hampering vehicle offtake across segments. The overall wholesale of vehicles declined 13.77 per cent to 2,30,73,438 units as against 2,67,58,787 units in 2018.
</p><p> Soni said TKM has taken a conscious decision of not passing the entire cost increase due to the transition and absorb for sometime so as not to make it difficult for customers.
</p><p> Citing the example of the BS-VI Innova Crysta, which the company has introduced at a price range of Rs 15.36 lakh to Rs 24.06 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), he said,"The main challenge was that if we had passed on the entire cost to the market it would have been a real big step up...If there was a steep price hike it would have been very difficult for the consumer to understand."
</p><p> Therefore, he said, "We have passed on less than 50 per cent of the cost impact due to BS-VI to the market and taken the hit on the company side."
</p><p> However, he added, "How long can we absorb is a big question. That's why we are calling it a limited introductory offer (for Innova Crysta). If we do this for a long time, sustainability will be an issue and at the same time we do understand that the customer will find it extremely difficult if we transfer the entire amount. So we will have to watch the market."
</p><p> Commenting on the company's production plans for the transition, he said, "We have been controlling and we have to further control as we have to taper out BS-IV and bring in BS-VI.
</p><p> "Wholesales will be less this month as we don't want any of our dealers to hold inventory when we have the transition to BS-VI that could lead to fire sales and unnecessary discounts."
</p><p> While rolling out of BS-VI compliant petrol vehicles is not an issue, Soni said it was not the same for diesel vehicles as availability of fuel across India is critical because BS-VI diesel engines cannot run on BS-IV diesel fuel.
</p><p> "We are ready with the BS-VI technology for diesel cars but the challenge is of the availability of fuel. So vehicle availability will depend on fuel availability. In petrol there is no such issue. Our Yaris, Glanza and Camry models are meeting BS-VI (standards)," he said.
</p><p> On diesel, Soni added, "We have to be careful and we are monitoring what will be the fuel availability across the country. So by end of this month or early next month we will start rolling out diesel version of BS-VI."
</p><p> For Fortuner and Crysta, he said the company is also still producing BS-IV version of the petrol variants, which account for 10-15 per cent of total sales.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Tesla's Cybertruck was released a year ago, but there's still no sign of it coming to Europe.</li><li>Tesla displayed the pickup at the Paris Motor Show this week, and BI had the chance to see it.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cybertruck">Tesla's Cybertruck</a> has been dividing opinion ever since it launched last year — but not in Europe, where the electric truck is still yet to go on sale.</p><p>The automaker brought <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk">Elon Musk's</a> postapocalyptic pickup to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-ev-giants-innovation-ai-auto-show-european-rivals-despair-2024-10?utm_source=Iterable&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=campaign_Insider%20Today,%20October%2017,%202024">Paris Motor Show</a> this week, where I had the chance to see it.</p><p>It's hard to overstate how striking the trapezoid truck is in person. The absence of any curves and fanatical devotion to symmetry makes the Cybertruck seem like it was dropped from another planet.</p><p>Amid the numerous cars<strong> </strong>on display in Paris, the sheer audacity of the pickup's design made a real impression.</p><div type="image" title="The Cybertruck on display at the Paris Motor Show" height="1875" width="2500" msid="114372872" hostid="261" sizebytes="235898"></div><p>Big, beefy pickup trucks are already a rarity in Europe, with the continent's narrow streets and dense urban environments <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiny-evs-byd-seagull-cars-transport-china-us-2024-5">more suited to smaller models</a>. The Cybertruck's brutalist style and sheer size make it unlike any vehicle I've ever seen.</p><p>In some ways, that's the point, and the reason the Cybertruck has <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-new-status-car-celebrities-billionaires-2024-2">become such a status symbol in the US</a>. The pickup's divisive design seems deliberately calculated to shock and provoke.</p><h2 id="bcacabc3-755d-40a3-8558-371cd43704fe">Not for me</h2><p>Eventually, however, the shock wore off and was replaced by a strange sense of futility.<strong> </strong></p><p>I do appreciate Tesla's attempt to do something a bit different — but I'm not that enthusiastic about driving around a car that looks like a giant boxcutter.</p><p>The sheer size of the Cybertruck is also an issue. As someone who spent much of the past few years whizzing around narrow British country lanes in a 12-foot-long Toyota Yaris, the idea of trying to back something as bulky as the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tesla.com/en_gb/cybertruck">nearly 19-foot Cybertruck</a> into a parking space doesn't appeal too much.</p><div type="image" title="A smudge on the door of a Cybertruck displayed at the Paris Motor Show." height="1875" width="2500" msid="114372875" hostid="261" sizebytes="97614"></div><p>Neither do the Cybertruck's famously sharp edges, which have already seen <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-owner-says-cut-wrist-injury-accident-2024-5">some owners report injuries in the US</a>.</p><p>The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cybertruck-upkeep-barkeepers-friend-tesla-fanatics-2024-3">Cybertruck's propensity for fingerprint smudges</a> was also apparent. The vehicle in Paris had already picked up small blemishes around the edge of one door.</p><p>The Cybertruck drew a huge crowd in Paris, but the reaction from attendees wasn't all positive.</p><p>Two attendees told BI the pickup was "too big" for the European market, with one joking that the truck was larger than his house.</p><h2 id="fca2d485-57c3-4ff3-93f7-fddc92157376">No sign of a European debut</h2><p>Despite being available for over a year, Tesla has not yet indicated whether it plans to sell the Cybertruck in Europe, one of its most important markets.</p><p>Experts <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cybertruck-elon-musk-tesla-not-sold-europe-anytime-soon-2023-12">previously told BI that the Cybertruck</a>, which weighs <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/cybertruck/en_us/GUID-12A976DD-EB60-431B-AFF1-5A37E95006DB.html">8,860 to 9,200 pounds</a> or around 4.43 to 4.5 tons when factoring in passengers, fluids, and cargo — is likely too heavy to be driven in Europe with a standard driver's license.</p><p>You need a separate license to drive anything heavier than 3.5 tons — including passengers and cargo — in the European Union. In the US, the threshold is much higher, which means you don't need a special license to drive the Cybertruck.</p><p>A few Cybertrucks have reached the continent using sneaky tactics to get around regulations, but even those have faced stern opposition.</p><p>Campaign groups <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.transportenvironment.org/articles/safety-groups-call-on-czech-government-to-review-registration-of-dangerous-cybertruck">called for Cybertrucks to be removed from European roads</a> earlier this month after one was successfully registered in the Czech Republic.</p><div type="image" title="Cybertruck on display at the Paris Motor Show" height="1875" width="2500" msid="114372870" hostid="261" sizebytes="378298"></div><p>Elon Musk previously floated the idea of producing a smaller version of the Cybertruck for European markets.</p><p>But even if Tesla did manage to get approval to sell the pickup in Europe, it's unclear whether there would be demand for it.</p><p>Pedro Pacheco, vice president of research at Gartner, previously told BI that the tiny market for pickup trucks in Europe meant it may not be worth Tesla's trouble to sell the Cybertruck across the Atlantic.</p><p>"For a vehicle in the category of the Cybertruck, there's not a huge market in Europe, because pickup trucks generally are not very common," he said.</p><p>Tesla did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I tested the 2022 <keyword id="13369260" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mazda" source="Orion">Mazda</keyword> 3 Turbo hatchback and found it fun to drive, great looking, and practical.</li><li>It proves not everyone needs an SUV, even though they're the most popular type of vehicle.</li></ul><p>It was 1938 when Jedediah T. Hatch, a protégé of Henry Ford's, first conceived his eponymous hatchback — a smaller vehicle with a flip-up cargo door that would become a popular, more spacious alternative to the regular sedan for decades to come.</p><p>Hatch, of course, would die before his invention truly took off. But his legacy lives on in icons like the Volkswagen Golf, named for Hatch's favorite ball.</p><p>Eight decades on, in a time when hatchbacks are falling out of fashion in favor of taller SUVs, I paid my respects to the old, forgotten innovator by testing out the 2022 Mazda 3 Turbo hatchback. </p><p>OK — none of that is true. Except for the last part. </p><div type="image" title="The 2022 Mazda 3 Turbo Hatchback." height="1763" width="2500" msid="90173559" hostid="261"></div><p>Mazda loaned me a top-of-the-line Mazda 3 hatch last month, and it was an excellent mix of sleek looks, driving fun, and cargo-hauling capability. The $36,000 Premium Plus version I drove felt like it punched well above its price point with comforts like leather seats; a leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel; satisfying knobs; and a handy head-up display that projects important information like your speed and blind-spot status onto the windshield.</p><p>The car was impressive, but it also made me sad. Hatchbacks have been heading for extinction in the US for years, but I never truly understood what we stand to lose until I lived with the sporty Mazda for a week.  </p><div type="image" title="The 2022 Mazda 3 Turbo Hatchback." height="1875" width="2500" msid="90173560" hostid="261"></div><p>In just the last few years in the US, Kia axed the hatchback version of its Elantra, Honda stopped selling the fan-favorite Fit, and Toyota canceled the Yaris. Ford <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/innovations/wp/2018/04/26/ford-has-been-synonymous-with-cars-for-more-than-a-century-thats-about-to-change/">stopped selling sedans</a> and hatchbacks altogether, spelling the end for the Fiesta and Focus. That's just a small sampling. </p><p>Carmakers have pivoted toward selling an increasing variety of SUVs (often called crossovers), which have supplanted sedans, hatchbacks, and station wagons as the ride of choice for most Americans. In 2021, crossovers and larger SUVs made up <a href="https://www.nada.org/WorkArea/DownloadAsset.aspx?id=21474865289">roughly 55%</a> of light vehicle sales. Regular cars accounted for a little over 20%, <a href="https://www.autoweek.com/news/a1714156/light-trucks-take-record-69-us-market/">down from half</a> in 2013.  </p><div type="image" title="The 2022 Mazda 3 Turbo Hatchback." height="1532" width="2500" msid="90173561" hostid="261"></div><p>The unfortunate thing is: A hatchback like the Mazda 3 can do nearly everything a small crossover can. In some ways, it can do those things a whole lot better. </p><p>The Mazda 3 is loads of fun to drive, particularly when you switch it into Sport mode. Acceleration is quick thanks to a 2.5-liter, turbocharged engine rated at 250 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Steering is precise and confident overall. There are high-performance crossovers out there, but physics is on the side of hatchbacks like the 3 — a lower center of gravity lends itself to better handling and a sportier drive. </p><div type="image" title="The 2022 Mazda 3 Turbo Hatchback." height="1875" width="2500" msid="90173562" hostid="261"></div><p>Hatchbacks also tend to get <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory/cars-efficient-newer-suvs-65096517">better fuel economy</a> than small SUVs, while being just as practical and roomy. I had no problem chucking multiple duffel bags, backpacks, and beach chairs into the Mazda 3's cargo area. The Mazda 3 hatch isn't huge by any means, but fold down the rear seats and it can swallow up a sizable Ikea haul. </p><p>One of the major selling points of crossovers is their elevated ride height, which gives drivers better visibility over the road. Point taken — some people might like that. </p><div type="image" title="The 2022 Mazda 3 Turbo Hatchback." height="3333" width="2500" msid="90173564" hostid="261"></div><p>Still, even on Southern California's sprawling (and frankly ridiculous) highways, I didn't find myself pining for a higher vantage point. Although you can't rely on driver-aiding technology exclusively, the Mazda 3's suite of safety features gives a good sense of what's going on in surrounding traffic. (One knock to the Mazda 3 hatch: It has some pretty big blind spots.)</p><p>Plus, how often does a crossover owner really go off-road and make full use of all that extra ground clearance?</p><div type="image" title="The 2022 Mazda 3 Turbo Hatchback." height="1779" width="2500" msid="90173566" hostid="261"></div><p>Much like the parent whose teenage son has come home from Derek's house with "allergies" one too many times, I'm not mad that everyone loves SUVs these days. I'm just disappointed. Sporty hatchbacks like the Mazda 3 Turbo bring a lot to the table that crossovers generally don't, and it'd be sad to see them go. </p><p>Fortunately, the hatches most prized by car enthusiasts seem to be hanging on. Volkswagen axed the regular Golf for the US, but spared the sportier <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/review-38000-vw-gti-can-still-work-magic-on-me-2020-9">GTI</a> and R versions. Hyundai canceled the quirky, three-door Veloster after 2021, but the zippier Veloster N is still kicking. </p><p>So the best hatches — Mazda 3 Turbo included — may have a chance yet.</p>

The $36,000 Mazda 3 Turbo hatchback showed me SUVs aren't always the answer

<ul class="summary-list"><li>More than two dozen 2020 vehicles won't be back for the 2021 model year. </li><li>As consumer demand shifts, many automakers are eliminating sedans, wagons, and hatchbacks. </li><li>Only one crossover won't make it to 2021: the Dodge Journey. </li></ul><p>The <keyword id="34478" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="auto-industry">auto industry</keyword> is in the midst of a crossover boom - and for every new compact crossover automakers bring to market, some sorry sedan or hatchback heads to the automotive graveyard.</p><p>The list of models that won't live to see the 2021 model year includes some iconic and long-running nameplates like the Lincoln Continental, Chevy Impala, and Dodge Grand Caravan, along with some short-lived models that just didn't manage to catch on, like Jaguar's high-performance station wagon and Alfa Romeo's inexpensive mid-engine sports car. </p><p>And although the models that won't live to see the 2021 model year span makes and price points, the one thing that unites nearly all of them is that they're not crossovers. In fact, after the 2020 model year, multiple brands - Cadillac, Lincoln, Buick, and Ford among them - will have transitioned to lineups that don't include a single sedan. </p><p>Check out 25 cars automakers killed off for 2021 below: </p><h2><strong>Acura RLX</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020_Acura_RLX_Sport_Hybrid_034 source" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79978917" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The RLX luxury sedan is out of Acura's 2021 lineup after selling <a href="https://hondanews.com/en-US/releases/release-807c080220275f828905387c4f002e91-record-light-truck-sales-lift-ahm-and-honda-brand-to-sales-increases-in-2019">just over 1,000 units</a> in 2019. Acura sold roughly 50 times that amount of its MDX crossover, and around 60 times more RDX crossovers. </p><p>It has unusual features like rear-wheel steering and a sporty hybrid option with a claimed 377 horsepower, but that wasn't enough to keep buyers interested.</p><h2><strong>Alfa Romeo 4C Spider</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Alfa Romeo 4C Spider 3" height="1502" width="2250" msid="79978918" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Alfa Romeo killed off the hardtop version of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alfa-romeo-4c-spider-review-mini-ferrari-2016-7">4C</a> a few years back, and the roadster follows in its footsteps for 2021. Starting at under $70,000, the 4C is one of the most affordable mid-engined sports cars on the market - but alas, it <a href="https://www.goodcarbadcar.net/alfa-romeo-4c-sales-figures-usa-canada/">barely broke triple-digit sales</a> in 2019 and so it's gone for good. </p><p>But other inexpensive mid-engine options like the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chevrolet-corvette-mid-engine-review-c8-horsepower-price-specs-chevy-2020-10">Chevy Corvette</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-718-boxster-s-and-alfa-romeo-4c-spider-comparison-2018-5">Porsche Boxster</a>, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-cayman-s-review-photos-details-2018-3">Porsche Cayman</a> are still kicking. </p><h2><strong>BMW i8</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="bmw i8 hero" height="2000" width="3000" msid="79978919" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>After six years on the market, it's the end of the line for the plug-in hybrid i8. Despite its somewhat confused combination of exotic looks and a tiny three-cylinder engine (aided by electric motors), the i8 managed to sell more than 20,000 units in its run, making it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/a-look-back-at-the-futuristic-bmw-i8-which-ends-production-in-april-2020-3">the best-selling car of its kind</a>, according to BMW. </p><p><a href="https://www.bmwblog.com/2020/08/26/bmw-i8-successor/">Rumors have circulated</a> around a possible i8 successor based on the Vision M Next concept car, but there's no official word yet on when or if that will happen. </p><h2><strong>BMW M8 Coupe and Convertible</strong></h2><div type="image" title="P90348795_highRes_the all new bmw m8 c" height="1571" width="2095" msid="79978920" hostid="261"></div><p>BMW is trimming the options available for its halo M8 due to COVID-19-related supply issues, <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a34252647/2021-bmw-m8-coupe-convertible-phased-out/">Car and Driver</a> reported in October. The coupe and convertible won't be available for 2021, but the four-door Gran Coupe version is still on the table if you have a spare $130,000 laying around.</p><h2><strong>Buick Regal</strong></h2><div type="image" title="2019 Buick Regal GS 021 (1)" height="1398" width="1865" msid="79978923" hostid="261"></div><p>After nearly 50 years on the market, GM has canceled the Buick Regal as part of its shift away from passenger cars. Its biggest sedan won't make it to 2021, despite being one of Caddy's technological leaders and the only vehicle to get its twin-turbocharged, 4.2-liter, 550-horsepower <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cadillacs-new-blackwing-cars-here-to-take-on-bmw-mercedes-2020-4#-2">Blackwing V8</a>. </p><h2><strong>Chevrolet Impala</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="2018 Chevrolet Impala." height="2000" width="3000" msid="79978931" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The iconic Impala nameplate bites the dust this year, but it's not the first time GM has discontinued the model. It's been on the market in spurts since the late 1950s - so there's still hope it returns once the nostalgia sets in. </p><h2><strong>Chevrolet Sonic</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Sonic 006" height="1395" width="2500" msid="79978933" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The demise of the small car claims another victim in the Chevy Sonic. Sales of the inexpensive hatchback and sedan peaked in 2014, when Chevy sold <a href="https://carsalesbase.com/us-chevrolet-sonic/">nearly 94,000 of them</a>, but plummeted <a href="https://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/news.detail.html/content/Pages/news/us/en/2020/jan/0103-gmsales.html">below 14,000 in 2019</a>. </p><p>It started its life outside the US as the Aveo, and, like lots of compact cars that don't find success stateside, it will live on in other markets. </p><h2><strong>Dodge Grand Caravan</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Dodge Grand Caravan." height="1667" width="2500" msid="79978934" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The Dodge Grand Caravan arguably <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/history-rise-fall-of-the-minivan-led-by-dodge-caravan-2020-4">birthed the minivan segment</a> when it came on the scene in 1984 along with its upmarket sibling, the Plymouth Voyager. Now, as crossovers and full-size SUVs have superseded minivans as America's family hauler of choice, the minivan that started it all is no more. </p><p>But Fiat Chrysler isn't out of the minivan game altogether - it still sells the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chrysler-pacifica-hybrid-minivan-review-features-2019-4">Chrysler Pacifica</a>, which got a facelift for 2021. </p><h2><strong>Dodge Journey</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="DG020_003JNf41s27dlha2vt5b61j75a7jmp2" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79978935" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The Dodge Journey is the only crossover to kick the bucket for 2021, which speaks volumes of its consumer appeal - or lack thereof. As of May, nearly half of 2019 Journeys sat unsold on dealer lots, according to car search engine <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/20-car-models-with-most-2019-surplus-inventory-2020-5">iSeeCars</a>.</p><h2><strong>Ford Fusion</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 ford fusion titanium white platinum metallic" height="1292" width="2000" msid="79978936" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Ford announced plans to discontinue all of its sedans <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/innovations/wp/2018/04/26/ford-has-been-synonymous-with-cars-for-more-than-a-century-thats-about-to-change/">back in 2018</a>, and it's achieved that with the demise of the Fusion. The Focus, Fiesta, and Taurus have all left the scene as well, leaving the Ecosport compact crossover as Ford's entry-level offering. </p><h2><strong>Ford Mustang Shelby GT350</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R Heritage Edition_6.JPG" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79978990" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The V8-powered, manual-transmission-only <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-mustang-shelby-gt350-gt350r-stopping-production-this-fall-2020-10">Mustang Shelby GT350 and GT350R</a> pay homage to the famed Shelby GT350 of the 1960s, which kicked off the Mustang's high-performance reputation. But that rich history wasn't enough for the Blue Oval to keep it around. </p><p>For buyers who desire no less than an absurdly powerful sports car bearing the Shelby name, the 760-horsepower Shelby GT500 is still on the market. </p><h2><strong>Honda Civic Coupe and Civic Si</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Honda Civic Si" height="1608" width="3000" msid="79978991" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Honda is launching a new, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2022-honda-civic-debut-photos-sleek-styling-2020-11">11th generation of the Civic</a> for 2021, and some changes are coming to the popular model's lineup. The two-door Civic Coupe variant bites the dust after the 2020 model year, while the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/honda-civic-si-review-specs-sedan-manual-price-horsepower-sport-2020-8">sporty Si</a> will take a hiatus for 2021 and return for the following model year. </p><h2><strong>Honda Fit</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Honda Fit" height="800" width="1200" msid="79978992" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Carmakers are getting rid of small hatchbacks left and right, and Honda is no exception. It's axing the Fit, despite the little guy being widely regarded as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/one-of-the-best-affordable-cars-you-can-buy-just-got-an-update-2017-7">one of the best compact economy cars</a> money can buy. </p><p>It's an understandable move, given that Fit sales have declined as appetite for the brand's crossovers grows. Now the cheapest vehicle in Honda's lineup is the $21,000 HR-V, which <a href="https://hondanews.com/en-US/releases/release-807c080220275f828905387c4f002e91-record-light-truck-sales-lift-ahm-and-honda-brand-to-sales-increases-in-2019">outsold the Fit three-to-one</a> in 2019. </p><h2><strong>Hyundai Elantra GT</strong></h2><div type="image" title="2020 Elantra GT " height="995" width="1326" msid="79978994" hostid="261"></div><p>The hatchback version of the Hyundai Elantra heads to the great junkyard in the sky after the 2020 model year, along with its sporty sibling, the GT N Line. <a href="https://www.hyundainews.com/en-us/releases/3101">Hyundai said</a> the hatchback was displaced by the compact Venue and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hyundai-kona-review-photos-styling-2020-12">Kona</a> crossovers.</p><p>But the Veloster and Veloster N carry over to 2021. </p><h2><strong>Jaguar XE</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Jaguar XE" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79978995" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Jaguar is eliminating its entry-level sport sedan, the XE, from its US lineup after selling only <a href="https://www.goodcarbadcar.net/jaguar-xe-sales-figures-usa-canada/">3,551 of them</a> in 2019. By comparison, BMW regularly sells well <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20200103005391/en/BMW-of-North-America-Reports-December-2019-and-Year-End-U.S.-Sales.">over 40,000</a> 3-Series sedans annually, while Mercedes-Benz moved some <a href="https://carsalesbase.com/us-mercedes-benz-c-class/">50,000 C-Class sedans</a> in 2019. </p><p>For 2021, the XF sedan assumes the entry-level spot and gets a significant price cut to match.</p><h2><strong>Jaguar XF Sportbrake</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Jaguar XF S" height="1200" width="1800" msid="79978996" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Wagons are also going by the wayside as crossovers take over, and Jaguar is pulling its one and only long-roof model, the XF Sportbrake, from the American market after only three model years. In that time, Jaguar sold fewer than 250 of the wagons, according to <a href="https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a34285524/jaguar-xe-xf-sportbrake-cancelled/">Road &amp; Track</a>.</p><p>Buyers in the market for a luxury wagon will need to look to offerings like the Volvo V90, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/audi-a4-allroad-wagon-crossover-review-2017-6">Audi</a> A6 Avant, or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-panamera-gts-sport-turismo-review-photos-features-verdict-2020-2">Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo</a> come 2021. </p><h2><strong>Kia Optima</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Kia Optima" height="1326" width="2000" msid="79978997" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The Kia Optima is on its way out after two decades in production. But the South Korean carmaker isn't abandoning sedans like some of its US counterparts - the Optima is succeeded by a sleek new mid-sized model called the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2021-kia-k5-specs-features-photos-release-date">K5</a>. </p><h2><strong>Lexus GS</strong></h2><div type="image" title="LEX GSG MY20 0010 LEAD IMAGE scaled" height="1298" width="1731" msid="79978999" hostid="261"></div><p>The Lexus GS hit the scene in the early 1990s and has endured through four generations. This particular rear-wheel-drive sedan may be going away after 2020, but Lexus-sedan stans will still be able to choose the ES, LS, and IS. </p><h2><strong>Lincoln Continental</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Lincoln Continental" height="942" width="2000" msid="79979001" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Lincoln has used the Continental name on and off for some 80 years, and this latest version of the car is dead for 2021. But given the nameplate's deep history, there's a good shot it will come back someday - perhaps on some future electric luxury sedan. </p><h2><strong>Lincoln MKZ</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Lincoln MKZ" height="2000" width="3000" msid="79979002" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>With the MKZ and Continental gone for 2021, Lincoln is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lincoln-continental-mkz-sedan-dead-suv-crossover-lineup-american-luxury-2020-7">left with an all-SUV lineup</a> of the Nautilus, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2020-lincoln-aviator-review-hybrid-specs-three-row-suv-luxury-2020-7">Aviator</a>, Corsair, and the flagship Navigator. </p><p>And the numbers back up Lincoln's move. In 2019, the brand sold some <a href="https://media.ford.com/content/dam/fordmedia/North%20America/US/2020/01/06/sales-4q2019.pdf">88,000 SUVs</a> and fewer than 25,000 sedans - and that's with only a partial year of Aviator sales. </p><p>Following this year's lineup shakeups at Ford and Lincoln, the Mustang is the Blue Oval's only car left standing. </p><h2><strong>Mercedes-Benz SLC</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="_F8A6477 1200x800" height="800" width="1200" msid="79979005" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The Mercedes-Benz SLC is has been officially discontinued with no successor planned, following more than two decades of continuous production. For the model's last hurrah, Mercedes added a yellow <a href="https://media.mbusa.com/releases/the-slc-final-edition">2020 SLC Final Edition</a> to its lineup. </p><h2><strong>Toyota Yaris</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Yaris " height="1166" width="1555" msid="79979006" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The death of the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, Chevy Sonic, and Hyundai Elantra GT this year - along with the end of the Ford Fiesta and Mazda2 previously - leave a scant few options for fans of subcompacts here in the US. </p><p>Despite the Yaris being a favorite among lovers of small cars, it <a href="https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-motor-north-america-reports-december-2019-year-end-sales/">hasn't sold well</a> in the US as of late. Fewer than 22,000 of them rolled off of dealer lots in 2019, as compared with 304,850 Corollas, 336,978 Camrys, and 448,071 Rav4 crossovers. </p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div>When Vermont resident Ronald Read died at age 92, he left millions of dollars to the local library and hospital, reports his hometown newspaper, <a href="http://www.reformer.com/news/ci_27453003/local-man-leaves-millions">the Brattleboro Reformer</a>.</p><p>Read, who <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/02/04/us-usa-vermont-millionaire-idUSKBN0L82IU20150204">according to Reuters</a> worked as a gas station attendant and as a janitor at a JCPenney, is remembered by those who knew him as a "frugal and extremely private person." </p><p>The Reformer reports that "his estate included a 2007 Toyota Yaris valued at $5,000, but his closest friends and family members did not know he had even a tiny sliver of the fortune he left behind." </p><p>Between his property and his investments, that fortune amounted to about $8 million.</p><p>In an interview with <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/102410730#.">CNBC</a>, Read's attorney Laurie Rowell explains that most of his investments - including AT&amp;T, Bank of America, CVS, Deere, GE, and General Motors - were found in his safe deposit box after his death.</p><p>"He only invested in what he knew and what paid dividends," <span>Rowell said</span>. "That was important to him."</p><p>Those holdings enabled him to bequeath $1.2 million to the local Brooks Memorial Library and $4.8 million to the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital - the largest donations either institution had received since the library's founding in 1886.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Read's stepson remembers him to the Reformer as a daily reader of the Wall Street Journal and a man who lived a financially conservative lifestyle. "I was tremendously surprised," Brown told the paper. "He was a hard worker, but I don't think anybody had an idea that he was a multi-millionaire."</p><p>In fact, one local resident quoted in the Reformer says she once knitted him a hat (that she never saw him wear) and "bought some old fence wiring from him once because I thought he could use the money." She adds: "People were stunned that he had that much money."</p><p>"He had two lifelong hobbies: Investing and cutting wood," Rowell told <a href="http://www.reformer.com/news/ci_27453003/local-man-leaves-millions">the Reformer</a>. "The generous bequests to the Brooks Library and Brattleboro Memorial Hospital attest to his skills at investing.
