<ul class="summary-list"><li>The current generation <keyword id="1055033" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Toyota-Rav4">Toyota RAV4</keyword> made a wonderful addition to its interior: rubber-lined cubbies for the driver and front passenger.</li><li>There's a small one for the driver and a bigger one for the passenger.</li><li>Most cars don't offer extra storage space for loose items other than door pockets or the cupholders, neither of which are ideal. The RAV4's are an excellent use of what otherwise would have been dead space.</li></ul><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/toyota-rav4">Toyota RAV4</a> - a brilliant, highly utilitarian car recently made even more efficient with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/toyota-rav4-prime-plug-in-hybrid-specs-pricing-release-date-2020-6">a plug-in hybrid offering</a> - has one of the greatest interior features I've ever come across in a car. And it's not even an optional feature you have to pay extra for. It comes standard.</p><p>Essentially, it's this: a handy little cubby introduced with the <a href="https://jalopnik.com/the-2019-toyota-rav4-can-almost-do-it-all-1834282110">current-generation RAV4</a>, which has been around for a few model years now.</p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota RAV4 XSE AWD_KL_32" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78625514" hostid="261"></div><p>"What's the big deal?" you snort to yourself. "Plenty of cars have cubbies."</p><p>But do they actually? Or are you just dumping all your knick-knacks into a cupholder and calling it a day?</p><p>It's true that cupholders are for drinks, but drinks aren't the only loose items we bring into cars. Most of us are forced to stick phones, wallets, sunglasses, pens, change, keys, lip balm, moisturizer, garage key cards, charging cables, hand sanitizer, face masks, ketchup packets, and vapes (hey, I don't know your life) into whatever free space we can find in our cars for safekeeping while we drive.</p><p>More often than not, stuff ends up in the cupholders.</p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota RAV4 XSE AWD_KL_64" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78625516" hostid="261"></div><p>For its fifth and current generation, the RAV4 does away with that forced packing. It gives us two rubber-lined cubbies that run along the dashboard. There's a long one for the front passenger and a short one for the driver, and it's a wonderful use of otherwise dead space.</p><p>In the 10 or so days that I spent with the RAV4 Prime - which was excellent, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rav4-toyota-plug-in-hybrid-first-drive-review-suv-mpg-2020-10">you should read the full review</a> - I made full use of those cubbies. As everyone who carries a purse knows, you don't always want to take it with you everywhere, especially if you're just running out for a quick errand. </p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota RAV4 XSE AWD_KL_37" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78625519" hostid="261"></div><p>Sometimes you just want to bring your wallet and your phone. Both of these fit perfectly in the cubby, as does the RAV4's key. The cubby is also far more convenient than putting things in door pockets, since those tend to be deep and it's easy to forget you've put something there.</p><p>The RAV4's cubbies are eye-level so you can easily see if you've left anything there. The rubber lining makes them both easy to clean and able to keep the items you put there from sliding around so much. Real people carry stuff with them, and that stuff needs a place to go.</p><p>With the RAV4, you can have a spot for your stuff <em>and </em>both you and your passenger can still have a cupholder apiece. But the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2021-toyota-venza-back-as-hybrid-price-specs-release-date-2020-5">2021 Toyota Venza</a> is one that deserves your attention.</p><p>Having a plethora of hybrid crossovers on the market — and hybrids in general — is a good thing. It wasn't too long ago that driving a hybrid car was erroneously seen as something only lame, tree-hugging environmentalists did. </p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_9" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110805" hostid="261"></div></p><p>But as we're living through a generation-defining climate crisis, it's great that there are suddenly so many hybrid options out there. It normalizes the idea of electrification and, hopefully one day, will pave the way for a complete break from our reliance on fossil fuels.</p><p>But I digress.</p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_6" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110808" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The Venza is anything but lame. It's sharply styled and outfitted with contemporary technology that makes it feel like it's fully embraced the new decade — and fully embraced buyers who normally wouldn't go for this whole "electrification" thing. </p><h2><strong>The 2021 <keyword id="9244368" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Toyota-Venza">Toyota Venza</keyword>: It's not the one you remember</strong></h2><p>Those familiar with <keyword id="6374528" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="toyota">Toyota</keyword>'s lineup from the late 2000s to the mid-2010s will know it also featured a Venza: an SUV-ish thing that wasn't quite tall enough to be an SUV but was also a bit too big to be a sedan. Perhaps it was most accurately described as a tall station wagon. Regardless, it was difficult to classify. </p><p><div type="image" title="Toyota Venza 2014" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110813" hostid="261"></div></p><p>After a successful 2009, <a href="https://www.motortrend.com/news/toyota-venza-calling-it-quits-after-2015-model-year/">sales figures started dropping</a> — to the point where the Venza was finally discontinued after the 2015 model year. </p><p>But now the Venza is back and classified firmly by Toyota as a two-row crossover. </p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_32" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110821" hostid="261"></div></p><p>From the outside, the new Venza is a "Venza" in name only. It looks nothing like the previous one. In fact, it has rather <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jaguar-f-pace-review-2017-7">Jaguar F-Pace</a>-esque lines to its sculpted rear end. Toyota's designers really pulled back on the beltline here, creating a silhouette that conveys sportiness.</p><p>The 2021 Venza is the United States-import version of the Japanese-market Toyota Harrier. It will be sold here exclusively as a hybrid model. The crossover is, as Toyota puts it, part of the automaker's goal of electrification advancement. </p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_16" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110823" hostid="261"></div></p><p>And seeing as Toyota paved the wave for mass-market <keyword id="163386" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="hybrid-cars">hybrid cars</keyword> with the Prius, I could only expect a top-notch hybrid experience from the new Venza. Toyota's had long enough to perfect it, after all.</p><h2><strong>Details and safety ratings: All-electric driving and standard all-wheel drive</strong></h2><p>The 2021 Venza rides on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which also underpins the Camry, Avalon, RAV4, Highlander, and Sienna. The hybrid system's battery pack is stored beneath the rear seats so trunk space isn't compromised. All-wheel drive comes as standard through the use of a separate, rear-mounted electric motor that powers the rear wheels as necessary.</p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_12" height="3000" width="2000" msid="77110827" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Toyota rates the new Venza at 219 horsepower, which comes from both its 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine and a system with three electric motors. Torque has not been announced at this time. </p><p>Although the EPA estimates haven't yet been finalized, Toyota said its own estimates put the total driving range at just under 500 miles. It also estimates fuel-economy return to be 40 mpg in the city, 37 mpg on the highway, and 39 mpg combined. </p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_8" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110830" hostid="261"></div></p><p>In the single weekend I had to test out the Venza, I found it returned about 36 mpg with both city and highway driving. </p><p>All-electric driving is possible for short distances, though in a recent Q&amp;A session, Toyota's engineers declined to disclose the range and speed limitations, if any. Rather, they said the main purpose of the all-electric driving is for coming home at night and not having the noise of the engine disturbing the neighbors, which seemed like a weirdly specific example to use. </p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_21" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110833" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Anyway, I was unable to determine the all-electric range in my own testing, but I did discover that the car would go into electric-only driving when it was traveling at 25 mph or below. The gasoline motor would kick to life if I surpassed 25 mph or if I leaned on the accelerator too aggressively. It wound up being most useful during stop-and-go traffic.</p><p>The Venza, in terms of size, is about six inches longer and slightly shorter in height than the RAV4. They're about the same width, and the RAV4 also has more ground clearance: It can have between 8.4 inches and 8.6 inches of clearance, depending on the trim, while the Venza claims 7.8 inches. </p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_17" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110836" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The Venza's weight comes to 3,847 pounds in the LE trim, 3,891 pounds in the XLE trim, and 3,913 pounds in the Limited trim, meaning it's a few hundred pounds heavier than the RAV4.</p><p>As of this writing, the Venza has yet to be rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.</p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_3" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110838" hostid="261"></div></p><h2><strong>What stands out: A crossover with luxury features and sports-car urges</strong></h2><p>Hybrid crossovers suffer from an image problem. </p><p>Too often, they are dismissed as boring, unenthusiastic cars, reserved solely for people who care not a bit about having any spark of excitement in their lives. The Venza takes this notion and turns it completely on its head.</p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_4" height="3000" width="2000" msid="77110842" hostid="261"></div></p><p>It doesn't take long behind the wheel before the Venza suddenly feels like it's shrunk around you. You're left feeling like you're driving something much smaller — and lighter — than you are. Likely, this is accomplished through communicative steering, a well-balanced chassis, and good throttle response. </p><p>The Venza drives with far more agility and maneuverability than anything its size has any right to. The electric motor supplies instantaneous low-end power, zipping the car ahead of slow-moving traffic with a sort of casual athleticism I've come to expect from sports cars — but certainly not from hybrid, two-row crossovers.</p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_15" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110846" hostid="261"></div></p><p>I returned the press loaner Venza over a week ago and the feeling that's stuck with me when I think back about how it drove is its chuckability. This is a car that feels light enough on its feet that you can throw it into corners and between lanes and it won't punish you with terrifying, body-roll wobbliness. ("Body roll" is just a fancy term for the sensation of a car leaning toward the outside of a turn. The less, the better.)</p><p>This is not to say that the Venza is a sports car, of course. It is not. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't shocked at how a car that big and weighing that much could feel completely elfin once it got moving. </p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_7" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110849" hostid="261"></div></p><p>During the rest of the driving experience, the Venza is quiet. The only time you really hear the engine at all is when you accelerate. Toyota said it wanted to create a cabin that fostered a very muted atmosphere, and the automaker has done that.<strong> </strong></p><p>The TNGA-K platform apparently blocks out vibration and noise through the floor, structure, and steering. Insulation placed in key locations cuts down on tire noise. The windshield is made from "acoustic glass" that helps reduce wind noise. </p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_23" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110851" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The switch between electric driving and hybrid driving — meaning when the gasoline engine turns on — was incredibly seamless. With the extra sound-deadening, the only hint you got that the car was suddenly using its gasoline engine was a very slight vibration in the steering wheel. That was it; completely unnoticeable otherwise if you weren't looking for it.</p><p>Because of its height, the Venza's ingress and egress were also very intuitive. I felt like Goldilocks when getting in and out of this car: didn't have to climb up too high, didn't have to get down too low in order to slide into the seat.</p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_26" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110855" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The rear seats can theoretically fit three, but that might be a bit cramped. With two, there's good arm and shoulder room, as well as decent legroom. </p><p>My favorite part of the car was the panoramic Star Gaze roof. A $1,400 option on the top-tier Limited trim, the roof is a big piece of seemingly frosted glass that flicks from transparent to to semi-transparent at the push of a button. Toyota said it uses something called "electrochromic glass technology" to pull off the effect.</p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_28" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110859" hostid="261"></div></p><p>When it's transparent, the Star Gaze roof acts like a regular, clear moonroof. It lets in sunlight and adds to the airiness of the cabin. When it's semi-transparent, the roof cuts down on the heat coming into the cabin and also diffuses the light in a very pleasant way, sort of like sitting beneath a white tarp.</p><p>Of course, if you want nothing to come through at all, you can also slide the roof covering shut. That's just less fancy.</p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_29" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110862" hostid="261"></div></p><h2><strong>What falls short: Sleek styling comes at a price </strong></h2><p>Even the Venza was unable to escape the cheap-looking, <a href="https://jalopnik.com/this-is-the-worst-new-trend-in-car-interior-design-1564314503">tacked-on-as-an-afterthought screen</a> and eventual <a href="https://jalopnik.com/future-audi-interiors-will-be-a-button-less-screen-fil-1840457095">buttonless</a> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-mercedes-user-experience-system-offers-up-to-five-screens-2020-7">hellscape</a> that awaits us all. Although its infotainment and climate were not completely controlled via a touchscreen, the "buttons" had zero haptic feedback, so you still needed to glance at the screen to check your climate adjustment anyway. </p><p>I hate that. I drive a lot of cars, and I still hate having to look at a screen while I drive. It's distracting.</p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_25" height="3000" width="2000" msid="77110868" hostid="261"></div></p><p>It's also almost a rule at this point that the sleeker and more raked a car's rear window is, the worse its rearward visibility is. The Venza, with its sporty looks, is a nightmare for over-the-shoulder glances. The fat D-pillars and small window make for a big blind spot. You'll rely on your mirrors a bit more here, as well as on the lane-departure warning system.</p><p>But call me old-fashioned: I like physically being able to see where I'm about to go. </p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_20" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110872" hostid="261"></div></p><p>And despite being longer than the RAV4, the Venza actually offers less cargo room. I suppose it's not surprising when you look at their exterior profiles — a box is always going to have more volume than something with a shorter, sleeker, and tapered roofline. </p><p>But just so you have them, the numbers: <a href="https://s3.amazonaws.com/toyota-cms-media/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/2020-Toyota-RAV4-Product-Information_FINAL_1.24.20.pdf">The RAV4 has</a> 37.5 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second row, the Venza has 28.8 cubic feet without the Star Gaze roof and 28.7 cubic feet with it. </p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_14" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110876" hostid="261"></div></p><h2><strong>How the Venza compares to its competitors: The only one of its kind </strong></h2><p>The Venza, being exclusively a hybrid-only, all-wheel drive model, is interesting. Typically, hybrid and all-wheel drive options are the most expensive way you can outfit a model. The Venza, through its singular offering, removes the other options entirely.</p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza." height="460" width="1186" msid="77110878" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The base LE trim starts at an MSRP of $32,470. The mid-tier XLE trim starts at $36,000. The top-tier Limited trim starts at $39,800. The delivery, processing, and handling fee is an additional $1,175. Toyota says the Venza will see an on-sale date of early September. </p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_27" height="3000" width="2000" msid="77110881" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Toyota has said the Venza will compete with the likes of the Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, Honda Passport, and Chevrolet Blazer. None of these offer hybrid configurations or standard all-wheel drive, so when you consider the Venza's starting price to be just a couple of thousand dollars more, it makes for a serious contender. </p><p>Yes, the Venza's official EPA fuel-economy figures haven't yet been released. But <a href="https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/2021-toyota-venza-hybrid-vs-chevy-blazer-honda-passport-comparison/">Roadshow</a> also points out that the Toyota's estimated combined fuel economy of about 40 mpg will likely be much better than the competition, which comparatively has mpg ranges in the low- to mid-20s. </p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_24" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110885" hostid="261"></div></p><h2><strong>Market musings: The Venza walks a fine line</strong></h2><p>The new Toyota Venza is designed to sit right in between the RAV4 and the Highlander. But while both of those are offered as non-hybrid and hybrid models, the Venza will have no such option. Hybrid is the only way you can get it. Why?</p><p>I have my suspicions. I suspect Toyota knows buyers will flock more heavily toward the RAV4 and the Highlander. Last year, the RAV4 and the Highlander were Toyota's <a href="https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-motor-north-america-reports-december-2019-year-end-sales/">two best-selling cars</a> in the US.</p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_30" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110888" hostid="261"></div></p><p>But to fill the existing gap between the two, and to cover any potential customers a competitor might steal, Toyota simply federalized the Japanese-market Harrier and stamped a name on it that US buyers would recognize. </p><p>Another reason for only federalizing the hybrid-only Venza: It offers protection against potential market cannibalization.</p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_11" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110892" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Pricing for the Venza slots right in between the hybrid versions of the RAV4 ($28,350 starting) and Highlander ($38,200 starting). As a result, the Venza both offers a middle choice for hybrid crossover buyers while simultaneously pricing itself out of the way of the non-hybrid RAV4 ($25,950 starting) and Highlander ($34,600 starting). It'd be logical to think that perhaps hybrid buyers and non-hybrid buyers are distinct enough not to clash over the Venza.</p><p>But maybe you don't care about all the market stuff. Maybe you just want to know if this sleek-looking hybrid crossover is any good to drive. It is! </p><p><div type="image" title="2021 Toyota Venza_31" height="1333" width="2000" msid="77110899" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The 2021 Venza can just about do it all — and then some. Come for the quiet and smooth ride, enjoy the seamless shift between all-electric driving to hybrid driving, and stay for the surprisingly spirited and light-footed nature. </p><p>Let the new Venza breathe some life into hybrid crossovers. REVIEW: The $32,000 Toyota Venza hybrid crossover proves electrification doesn't have to be boring

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11897348" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="toyota" source="Orion">Toyota</keyword> has sold too many electric and <keyword id="14500799" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hybrid-vehicles" source="Orion">hybrid vehicles</keyword> to qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit. </li><li>Electrified Toyota and Lexus vehicles will get more expensive for consumers as the credit phases out. </li></ul><p>Anyone in the market for a plug-in Toyota vehicle had better act fast.</p><p>The carmaker is set to be booted from a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-tax-credit-2021-electric-car-7500-federal-30d-explained-2021-8">federal program</a> that offers up to a $7,500 tax credit to buyers of certain electric and hybrid vehicles. That means highly efficient Toyota and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lexus-ux-250h-review-hybrid-price-250-suv-ev-specs-2022-2">Lexus</a> models will effectively get thousands more expensive starting in October. </p><p><a href="https://www.irs.gov/businesses/plug-in-electric-vehicle-credit-irc-30-and-irc-30d">The program</a> was established in 2010 to incentivize purchases of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cheapest-electric-car-affordable-kia-ford-chevy-hyundai-nissan-2022-6">pure-electric</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rav4-toyota-plug-in-hybrid-first-drive-review-suv-mpg-2020-10">plug-in hybrid vehicles</a>, which have bigger batteries than traditional hybrids and can drive significant distances without using gas. Carmakers are disqualified from the program once they sell 200,000 eligible vehicles in the US, which Toyota did last quarter, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-07-01/toyota-runs-out-of-us-tax-credits-for-evs-joining-tesla-and-gm#xj4y7vzkg">Bloomberg</a> first reported.</p><p>Toyota won't be kicked out of the program overnight. Instead, its credits will phase out gradually over a year-long period. Buyers won't be able to get any reduction to their tax bill for Toyota vehicles bought after September 30, 2023. </p><p>Currently, <a href="https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/taxevb.shtml">three 2022-model-year Toyota and Lexus vehicles</a> qualify for the program. Buyers of the Toyota RAV4 Prime and Lexus NX plug-in hybrids can get $7,500 back at tax time. The Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid is eligible for a $4,502 credit. (Vehicles with a larger battery capacity qualify for a higher credit.)</p><p>Toyota's new electric SUV, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/toyota-unveils-new-electric-suv-bz4x-15-models-by-2025-name2021-4">the BZ4X</a>, isn't widely available yet and the government doesn't list it among eligible models. </p><p>Before Toyota, only two automakers — Tesla and General Motors — met the 200,000-unit threshold. Ford and Nissan are expected to be next. Automakers are lobbying Congress to rework the credit and make it last longer. </p><p>Toyota, GM, Ford, and Stellantis <a href="https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-statement-on-customer-tax-credits-for-battery-electric-vehicles/">urged the US government</a> in June to get rid of the 200,000-vehicle cap, arguing that making the credits more widely available would accelerate adoption of EVs in a time when supply-chain difficulties are making them more expensive to produce. Instead, they recommended a "sunset date set for a time when the EV market is more mature."</p><p>But the prospect of a more generous tax credit is looking bleak.</p><p>Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wapo-manchin-wont-support-new-climate-spending-tax-hikes-2022-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">opposes measures in President Joe Biden's spending agenda</a> aimed at curbing climate change, including a plan to boost the EV tax credit to $12,500 for union-made American cars, effectively stopping that plan dead in the water. Manchin has also suggested nixing the existing $7,500 incentive, per <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/12/climate/electric-vehicle-tax-credits-manchin.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The New York Times</a>.</p>

Electric and hybrid Toyotas are about to get more expensive as the company is disqualified from federal tax credits

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6374528" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="toyota">Toyota</keyword> said it will build three new electrified cars for the US market this year.</li><li>Two will be battery-electric and one will be a plug-in hybrid.</li><li>The unknown BEVs will be the first mass-produced BEVs from Toyota.</li></ul><p>Toyota is the undisputed king of <keyword id="163386" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="hybrid-cars">hybrid cars</keyword>. And now, years after prioritizing hybrid cars, the automaker says it will launch three new electrified cars for the US market this year: two battery-electric vehicles and one plug-in hybrid.</p><p>Not many other details were shared in <a href="https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-to-debut-three-new-electrified-vehicles-for-u-s-market/">Toyota's Wednesday announcement</a>, although the automaker added that it is building a dedicated modular battery-electric platform - called the e-TNGA - which will underpin future <keyword id="312660" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="EVS">EVs</keyword>. It's an idea that's similar to <a href="https://jalopnik.com/the-fascinating-engineering-behind-vws-electric-car-pla-1829257860">Volkswagen's MEB platform</a>.</p><div type="image" title="new bev suv toyota" height="1404" width="2500" msid="80868391" hostid="261"></div>It's unclear what the new, US-bound Toyota EVs will be or how much they'll cost, but <a href="https://newsroom.toyota.eu/toyota-to-preview-all-new-battery-electric-suv/">Toyota said last December</a> that it would build an all-electric midsize SUV on the e-TNGA platform for its European market.<p>The new BEVs will mark the first mass-market EVs from the automaker, but they won't be the first EVs Toyota has ever made. That title goes to the Toyota RAV4 EV in the US, which was produced in two generations between 1997 and 2003 and 2012 and 2014.</p><div type="image" title="2002_ _2003_Toyota_RAV4 EV_at_Sustainable_Mobility_Seminar_Portland_2008_ _005 1500x1001" height="1001" width="1500" msid="80868393" hostid="261"></div>Getting your hands on those cars wasn't the easiest thing in the world, according to <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/car-news/toyota-rav4-ev-has-had-two-obscure-generations-281474979930553">Autotrader</a>. For one, Toyota leased the original RAV4 EV mostly to local governments and businesses. It sold very few to private buyers.<p>The second-gen RAV4 EV was slightly more accessible because it was open to public purchase in major cities - though both were only ever available in California. As a result, not many were sold.</p><div type="image" title="Toyota_RAV4_EV_001 1500x1000" height="1000" width="1500" msid="80868395" hostid="261"></div><p>Though Toyota can certainly take credit for introducing hybrid cars to the public mind - to this day, the Prius remains one of the most popular hybrids ever - it's dragged its feet when it comes to introducing mass-market battery-electric vehicles. It's currently lagging behind Kia, Hyundai, Nissan, Chevrolet, and Volkswagen in offering an EV.</p><p>Even so, Wednesday's announcement makes clear that Toyota isn't ready to give up on hybrid cars just yet.</p><p>At the bottom of the release, Toyota mentions it did its own internal research and found that: EVs and <keyword id="2158849" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="plug-in-hybrids">plug-in hybrids</keyword> have equal greenhouse gas-emissions when you factor in pollution produced by the energy grid to charge purely electric cars; building plug-in hybrids results in less greenhouse gas because they use a "smaller, lighter-weight battery"; and plug-in hybrids are cheaper to buy and own when you don't factor in tax incentives. </p><p>Sean O'Kane at <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2021/2/10/22187113/toyota-electric-vehicles-us-suv-debut-hybrids">The Verge</a> called Toyota's arguments against building a BEV thus far "flimsy."</p><p>"It's <a href="https://blog.ucsusa.org/dave-reichmuth/are-electric-vehicles-really-better-for-the-climate-yes-heres-why">a debatable idea taken at face value</a>, but this argument crucially ignores that all-electric vehicles only get cleaner as renewable energy makes up more of the grid," he wrote.</p><p>"Still, it's a popular line of thinking at Toyota; the company's own billionaire CEO, Akio Toyoda, said in December that he <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/toyotas-chief-says-electric-vehicles-are-overhyped-11608196665">believes electric vehicles are overhyped</a> in part because of power plant emissions - a statement that must have been music to the oil industry's ears since it's <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/climate-consensus-97-per-cent/2018/may/21/yes-evs-are-green-and-global-warming-is-raising-sea-levels">been one of its favorite pieces of misinformation</a>."</p><div type="image" title="Toyota e-TNGA" height="1405" width="2500" msid="80868397" hostid="261"></div>Toyota's resistance to building BEVs makes sense because hybrids are good for the Japanese automaker's business. In April 2020, Toyota <a href="https://newsroom.toyota.eu/toyota-passes-15-million-hybrid-electric-vehicles-global-sales/">reported</a> that it had sold more than 15 million hybrid cars globally. <p>And until EVs come down in price and charging infrastructure becomes far more widespread <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/analysis-plug-in-hybrid-cars-are-the-real-ev-solution-2020-10">plug-in hybrids <em>are</em> the current solution</a>. With good battery-only range, they can provide consumers with emissions-free driving while also removing range anxiety because you can easily fill up at a gas station when the battery is depleted. They get people used to the idea of charging at home.</p><p>But <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-international-plans-to-combat-climate-change-with-evs-2020-12">as more and more governments move to crack down on gas-powered cars</a>, legacy automakers see the writing on the wall. The all-electric revolution is coming whether they like it or not, and plug-in hybrids are merely a stop-gap: a solution to a problem that won't exist for that much longer.</p><p>We'll all learn that sooner or later - even Toyota.</p>

Toyota will finally offer full EVs this year - a major step for the undisputed king of hybrid cars

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The US government is looking into 11 complaints of <keyword id="1055033" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Toyota-Rav4">Toyota Rav4</keyword> engine fires.</li><li>If the <keyword id="112531" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="NHTSA">NHTSA</keyword> forced a recall, it would impact nearly 1.9 million drivers.</li><li>A <keyword id="6374528" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="toyota">Toyota</keyword> spokesperson said the company is working with the NHTSA to investigate the issue.</li></ul><p>The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Monday said it is <a href="https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/inv/2021/INOA-PE21005-5918.PDF">investigating</a> nearly 1.9 million Toyota RAV4 <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword> after receiving 11 fire complaints over the past year.</p><p>The complaints involved RAV4 models from 2013 to 2018. NHTSA said the majority of the fires originated from the vehicle's 12-volt battery, coming from the left side of the engine.  A terminal on the 12-volt battery may short to the frame, according to NHTSA documents, resulting in "the sudden loss of electrical power, vehicle stalling, and/or a fire originating in the engine compartment."</p><p>"Toyota is aware that NHTSA has opened this investigation and we are cooperating with the agency," a Toyota spokesperson told Insider. The small SUV is one of the car company's top-selling vehicles, as well as one of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fastest-selling-new-cars-during-the-pandemic-2020-8">fastest selling cars in the US,</a> according to iSeeCars.com.</p><p>The agency said the fires could likely be attributed to instances of prior front end collisions or improper battery installation. Many of the reports included cars with less than 50,000 miles on them.</p><p>While most fires occurred when the vehicle was on the road, four fires reportedly took place when the engine was turned off. At least two incidents detail RAV4 drivers who returned to their parked cars to find fire had "consumed the car."</p><p>Half of the drivers on the road said the vehicle stalled before catching fire, according to NHTSA's report. At least two drivers said they were "lucky to be able to [walk] out from my burning vehicle" and hoped to warn other drivers who may be at risk.</p><p>NHTSA is still in the process of investigating the fires. Though the investigation could force a recall, no Toyota RAV4 models have been recalled. </p>

It is the first of 15 fully electric cars the company plans to make by 2025 and one of seven under the bZ badge, according to a <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-19/toyota-begins-electrification-push-with-new-ev-suv-platform?sref=LspfQlRv">statement</a> from CTO Masahiko Maeda.</p><p>The car is a compact SUV that looks similar to Toyota's RAV4, but rides lower to the ground and features a longer wheelbase. </p><p>It's the first car to be built on Toyota's new electric e-TNGA BEV platform that the company created jointly with Subaru. Subaru is expected to unveil its own electric car on the platform shortly. </p><div type="image" title="Toyota_bZ4X_Concept_006" height="900" width="1200" msid="82148959" hostid="261"></div><p>The new car has several distinctive features, including a system that can use solar power to alleviate the impact of cold weather on the vehicle's range, as well as yoke instead of a typical steering wheel. The car's interior also has a large touchscreen.</p><p>The car company plans to manufacture the car in Japan and China. Toyota has unveiled the first of 15 new electric vehicles it plans to sell by 2025

On Tuesday, the company revealed how it'll look. </p><p>During an <a href="https://global.toyota/en/newsroom/corporate/36428993.html">event</a> laying out its new global push into electric vehicles, Toyota took the wraps off of more than a dozen future SUVs, sedans, and sports cars. Tucked way in the back corner was one of the most exciting prospects of them all: the yet-to-be-named truck. </p><p>Here it is:</p><div type="image" title="Toyota Pickup EV concept." height="1129" width="1505" msid="88283653" hostid="261"></div><p>Toyota hasn't released any details about the pickup, like when it'll arrive, how much it'll cost, or how big it'll be. But this pickup looks more Tacoma-sized. </p><p>That could be a smart move, too, since the gas-powered Tacoma crushes all other midsize pickups in the US, while the Tundra isn't nearly as popular as its rivals out of Detroit. Right now, the only electric pickup you can buy is the midsize <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rivian-r1t-ev-electric-pickup-first-drive-impressions-photos-2021-9">R1T</a>, the inaugural truck from California startup Rivian. </p><div type="image" title="Toyota electric vehicle lineup" height="850" width="1700" msid="88283655" hostid="261"></div><p>Toyota launched the pioneering Prius hybrid more than 20 years ago, but has been a bit slow to embrace fully-electric vehicles, arguing that hybrids are the best way of reducing global emissions. Toyota said it would plunge $70 billion into electrification efforts and make Lexus an electric-only brand. </p><p>The company revealed lots of similar-looking electric SUVs of various sizes, but also a few more interesting models. It previewed an electric off-road SUV tentatively named the Compact Cruiser EV. Toyota revealed an electric truck to compete with the F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T

<br /> A consumer forum in Chennai has ordered <keyword id="6374528" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Toyota">Toyota</keyword> Kirloskar Motor and two of its automobile dealerships to pay K Sarvanan, a local resident, Rs 1.35 lakh for deficiency in services and causing him mental agony.<br />

As per the petitioner, he had purchased a car from T Indiran in January 2012, who had bought the car from a dealer of Toyota Motors around two years earlier, with a transferable warranty of 36 months or 1 lakh km.<br />

However, the car would not start just a few days after Sarvanan purchased it, because of which he had to take it for servicing at Lanson Motors. He later found that Indiran had earlier got the car repaired at Harsha Automobiles in Kumananchavadi for 85,000, and had sold it without informing him of the defect.<br />

Sarvanan then requested Lanson Motors to replace the car or refund the cost of repair but was told that he had no locus standi to ask for a new car since the car was secondhand.<br />

Harsha Autombolies, too, said no, claiming that the warranty was void because of owner’s low maintenance, and the fact that it was serviced at a unauthorized centre.<br />

Toyota Kirloskar, however, said that the engine was damaged because of several accidents, and that there was no manufacturing defect in the car.<br />

However, a bench of president K Jayabalan and member T Kalaiyarasi said that the vehicle, which was also tested by Anna University's department of automobile engineering, had several defects. The ignorance on part of Lanson and Harsha motors caused mental agony to Sarvanan.<br />

Therefore, it ordered Toyota Kirloskar and both dealerships to pay 1 lakh as compensation for mental agony, 30,000 for vehicle repairs and 5,000 in costs for litigation.<br />

The plug-in hybrid version of its most popular and best-selling car will have a starting MSRP of $38,100. </p><p>The <keyword id="8366344" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Toyota-RAV4-Prime">Toyota RAV4 Prime</keyword> was first announced last November and boasts very impressive figures: The car will have 302 horsepower, be able to do zero to 60 in 5.7 seconds, and have a manufacturer-estimated 42 miles of driving range on battery power alone from a single charge, according to an <a href="https://pressroom.toyota.com/get-the-first-ever-2021-rav4-prime-starting-at-under-40k-msrp/">official press release</a>. Compared to other <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/features/g15377500/plug-in-hybrid-car-suv-vehicles/">comparable plug-in hybrids</a>, 42 miles is high.</p><p>There will also be electronic on-demand all-wheel drive.</p><p>The SE trim will indicate the base model RAV4 Prime models. That's the one that'll start at $38,100. You'll get 18-inch wheels, heated front seats, blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, red stitching, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, and a powered trunk door. </p><p>For those looking for a few more options, Toyota will also offer the car in XSE trim, which starts at $41,425. The XSE will offer 19-inch wheels, paddle shifters, a moonroof, ambient interior lighting, a bigger touchscreen, and two-tone exterior paint. The attractive Supersonic Red that you see in the header photo above will also be an option.</p><p>Toyota notes that these prices exclude the delivery, processing, and handling fee of $1,120.</p><p>Seeing as the RAV4 is Toyota's <a href="https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-motor-north-america-reports-december-2019-year-end-sales/">best-selling car of both 2018 and 2019</a>, it's likely the plug-in hybrid version of it will also be extremely popular. </p><p>As of right now, the only other plug-in hybrid Toyota offers is the Prius Prime. The Prius Prime, despite finally getting a fifth seat for its 2020 model year, is also smaller, produces less power, and has an <a href="https://s3.amazonaws.com/toyota-cms-media/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/2020_Toyota_Prius_Prime_Product_Information_FINAL.pdf">EPA-estimated, EV-only range of up to 25 miles</a>.</p><p>As a bigger and taller vehicle, the RAV4 offers additional cargo room, a bigger back seat, and easier ingress and egress for passengers. Comcast refused to air the ad, the Lincoln Project <a href="https://twitter.com/ProjectLincoln/status/1413181271262605326">said</a>.</p><p>After a mob of Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol on January 6 to try and prevent Congress from certifying Biden's win, many top US companies <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/capitol-siege-trump-company-responses-riots-political-donations-2021-1">scrambled to cut ties</a> with the 147 GOP lawmakers who voted against the results.</p><p>Dozens of companies, including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/capitol-siege-trump-company-responses-riots-political-donations-2021-1">Walmart, Amazon, Morgan Stanley, and AT&amp;T</a>, said they would stop donating to these specific lawmakers, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hallmark-political-donations-josh-hawley-roger-marshall-republicans-2021-1">Hallmark</a> even asked two senators to return its donations.</p><p>Other companies, including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jpmorgan-citi-microsoft-facebook-pause-political-donations-capitol-siege-2021-1">Microsoft, Deloitte, and Goldman Sachs</a>, said they would instead <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jpmorgan-citi-microsoft-facebook-pause-political-donations-capitol-siege-2021-1">pause all political donations</a> to both Republicans and Democrats..</p><p>The vast majority of corporations who pledged to stop funding these GOP lawmakers have stayed true to their word. Some companies who made vaguer promises about assessing PAC criteria have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-pac-political-donations-money-lawmakers-election-trump-biden-republican-2021-4#toyota-1">restarted donations</a>, while others <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-pac-political-donations-money-lawmakers-election-trump-biden-republican-2021-4#toyota-1">gave money instead to various Republican committees</a> that, in turn, fund these lawmakers.</p><p>Toyota did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-pac-political-donations-money-lawmakers-election-trump-biden-republican-2021-4">A Toyota spokesperson told Insider</a> in May that the company "supports candidates based on their position on issues that are important to the auto industry and the company."</p><p>"We do not believe it is appropriate to judge members of Congress solely based on their votes on the electoral certification," the spokesperson said at the time. "Based on our thorough review, we decided against giving to some members who, through their statements and actions, undermine the legitimacy of our elections and institutions." The spokesperson did not say who those members were.</p>
