"It's 2024, disabled people deserve a more dignified and safe way to fly."Business Insider has reached out to Hunter for comment.According to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.transportation.gov/sites/dot.gov/files/2023-10/Summary%20Report%202021.pdf">report</a> by the US Department of Transportation, more than 51% of the 33,631 complaints received by 180 carriers in 2021 "concerned the carriers' failure to provide adequate assistance to persons using wheelchairs."The department said it was "focused on improving air travel for persons with disabilities, including those who use wheelchairs."In a statement to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx995y8lwlgo">BBC News</a>, Air Canada said that it had followed all the protocols for helping passengers with disabilities."However, as part of our accessibility plan, we will be reviewing airport procedures, including for smaller foreign stations, with the aim of working with local airport and other partners to find ways to provide more consistent service," it added.Air Canada did not immediately reply to a request for comment from Business Insider, which was made outside regular working hours.Air travel can be a huge source of anxiety for wheelchair users.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wheelchair-plane-air-travel-vulnerable-2024-3">Ryan Rae Harbuck, who has been paralyzed for nearly 27 years, wrote an essay for Business Insider</a> in March describing what it's like."Being a passenger on an airplane when you are a wheelchair user is giving up all reigns of mobility and independence," Harbuck wrote. It has been edited for length and clarity.I saved and invested $100,000 at 25 years old in 2019, and it was the origin story of my business, "<a target="_blank" href="https://herfirst100k.com/">Her First $100k</a>." Money gave me the freedom to leave a toxic job, travel to Europe, and launch my career as a financial advisor.When I set out to save $100,000, I was 22, living in Seattle in 2016 and making $55,000 at my first corporate job. I read a blog post about a woman who built her net worth to $100,000 by 25. It inspired me to set my own goal to save and invest $100,000 before I turned 26.I'm a cisgender, straight white woman. Saving $100,000 was a combination of privilege and hard work. It took around three years.Graduating from college debt-free was a major factor in being able to save and invest this amount so young. My parents had been saving for my college fund since I was a kid, and I worked three jobs while in school to pay for college. I wouldn't have been able to save $100,000 at 25 if I had been paying off student debt, and I'm lucky to have gotten a great financial education from my parents. They taught me how to be a smart saver, use a credit card responsibly, and use money as a tool to build a life I love.<h2>1. Give yourself a why</h2>When setting financial goals, ask yourself, "What do I want my life to look like, and how can money be a tool to help you get there?" If your goal is to be debt-free, envision what it would feel like to no longer have to make any loan payments. If you want to save $2,000, do you want to travel to a new place or have more cushion in your emergency fund?Saving $100,000 meant I would have more options early in my career to be flexible and take risks. Once I reached that goal, I saw it as the permission slip I needed to quit my job and be an entrepreneur, a dream I've had since I was a kid. I felt confident I could launch a successful financial education platform and take my financial education business, "Her First $100k," full-time. This was the freedom I'd been saving for.<h2>2. Automate your savings so you're not tempted to spend it</h2>Whenever possible, automate your savings. I had automated transfers into my high-yield savings for my emergency fund and my Roth IRA — a tax-advantaged retirement savings account where the bank invests your contributions, and the earnings can be withdrawn tax-free after the age of 59 ½ — for investing. When it comes to investing, compound interest works for you at any age. I opened my Roth IRA at 22, and sometimes, it took almost the entire year to contribute the maximum amount I could. I wouldn't have hit my $100,000 goal as quickly if I hadn't routinely invested in these accounts.At the height of my $100,000 journey, I was putting 27% of my take-home pay into savings and investment accounts. Saving just under a third of my income allowed me to progress in my financial goals without depriving myself of a lifestyle I enjoyed. You can try increasing your saving contribution by 1 to 2%, see how it feels, and adjust as needed.<h2>3. Always look for ways to make more income</h2>Ultimately, there's only so much you can cut from your expenses to save money, especially after paying your rent or mortgage, insurance, groceries, and other necessary expenses.I made more money as I progressed in my career because I negotiated my salary whenever I changed jobs. If I knew I wasn't being compensated fairly based on market research, I advocated for a raise or started looking for a job that would pay more.In addition to the money I was making from 9-to-5 in marketing. I was also making income from my blog "Her First $100k" and the freelance clients I took on, which started as a side hustle.I could save and invest more because I was making more across my sources of revenue. If you can't work a second job, you can also increase your earning potential through interest earned by investing or using a high-yield savings account.<h2>4. When you spend, do so mindfully</h2>To prioritize financial wellness, you don't have to stop spending money. You just have to stop spending money on things you don't care about. I was able to find a balance where I could still travel to Costa Rica, eat out, and save toward my goals. I spent mindfully on things I loved and saved the rest. I also didn't allow lifestyle inflation to happen. Even after getting a raise and climbing in salary, I lived in the same one-bedroom apartment for four years.Figure out what matters to you, and find a balance between your financial goals and present life.

In its list of 287 individuals, the Kremlin has targeted current ministers including Cabinet Office minister Steve Barclay, minister for Brexit opportunities Jacob Rees-Mogg, trade minister Penny Mordaunt, and solicitor general Alex Chalk, as well as senior MPs such as Jeremy Hunt, Steve Baker, David Davis and Julian Lewis. However Russia has also gone after Rory Stewart, Dominic Grieve and Sarah Wollaston, who haven't been MPs since the 2019 election, and Charlie Elphicke, who stepped down after being found guilty on three counts of sexual assault. In another error, Tory MP Heather Wheeler's name appears twice, as the 18th and 206th entries, meaning there are actually just 286 names on the list. Meanwhile Alun Cairns' name has been misspelled. <a href="https://mid.ru/ru/foreign_policy/news/1810980/#sel=11:1:J1Q,11:6:HJo">According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,</a> the politicians listed "cannot visit the Russian Federation from now on."A translation of a statement reported by state-owned Russian news agency RIA Novosti said the sanctions were being applied "on the basis of reciprocity," following the decision to <a href="https://www.politico.eu/article/uk-sanctions-386-duma-members-over-support-for-luhansk-and-donetsk/">sanction 386 members of the Duma after they backed Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine</a>."These persons, who are now banned from entering the Russian Federation, took the most active part in the establishment of anti-Russian sanctions instruments in London (and) contribute to the groundless whipping up of Russophobic hysteria in the UK," it read."The hostile rhetoric and far-fetched accusations coming from the lips of British parliamentarians not only condone the hostile course of London, aimed at demonizing our country and its international isolation, but are also used by opponents of a mutually respectful dialogue with Russia to undermine the foundation of bilateral co-operation."Prime Minister <keyword id="11911533" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="boris-johnson" source="Orion">Boris Johnson</keyword>, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace and 10 other senior politicians — mostly members of the Cabinet — have already been barred. Brexit chaos as Conservative MP resigns for pushing EU citizens' plan backed by his own government

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">GettyMichel Barnier</div></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>The EU's chief Brexit negotiator rejects UK appeals to protect citizens' rights in the event of a no-deal Brexit.</li><li>He said a number of problems existed in ringfencing the rights of citizens in the event the UK left the EU with no deal in place.</li><li>Michel Barnier says the UK and EU should focus on passing Theresa May's withdrawal agreement instead.</li><li>Brussels was giving a clear it would not be willing to accept a "managed no deal" which some Tory MPs have called for.</li></ul>LONDON - The rights of UK citizens living in Europe may not be automatically protected under a no-deal Brexit, the EU has suggested.Several candidates to replace Theresa May as prime minister, including frontrunner Boris Johnson, have said they are prepared to take the UK out of the EU with or without a deal on October 31, under a so-called "managed no-deal."However, the EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier today dismissed suggestions that the UK could could leave while automatically carving out certain uncontroversial parts of the withdrawal agreement, such as citizens rights.Writing to the UK government, Barnier rejected an appeal to ensure the agreement reached between the two sides on citizens' rights would still apply if Britain leaves the EU without a deal at the end of October.Barnier said ring-fencing citizens' rights was "far from straightforward," highlighting a number of potential sticking points including the role of the European Court of Justice."Our joint efforts should remain focused on making sure that the withdrawal agreement will be ratified and will enter into force," Barnier wrote, according to <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/jun/18/barnier-rebuffs-appeal-over-citizens-rights-in-event-of-no-deal-brexit">a Guardian report</a>. "We should not be distracted from this essential objective."His letter came in response to a request from Steve Barclay, the UK's Brexit secretary. Barclay wrote to the EU last week asking negotiators to carve out an agreement on rights for British expats if the UK leaves the EU without a deal.Barnier said that both sides should instead focus on securing the full withdrawal agreement, although he added that "no British national will be left in the dark."Theresa May's government had previously refused to guarantee EU citizens' rights until the EU offered a similar arrangement for the approximately 800,000 British citizens who live elsewhere in the EU.However, May ultimately agreed to do so after Tory MP Alberto Costa successfully brought forward a Brexit amendment on the issue.The Costa amendment proposed that workers' rights, including maternity and paternity leave, as well as measures to protect part-time workers, should remain for British nationals on the continent as if the UK were still a member state.And while the EU Commission is developing its own legislation to safeguard the rights of UK citizens living elsewhere in the EU, there are still areas which do not appear to be fully covered.In his letter to Barnier, Steve Barclay said he had "particular concerns in relation to healthcare arrangements as these are not covered by the current proposals published by the commission.""The government's position remains that the withdrawal agreement provides the best way of providing confidence to citizens," he added."Nonetheless, given our shared commitment to protecting the rights of citizens in all scenarios, I would welcome your views on the proposal put forward by our parliament to ringfence citizens' rights and I propose that we discuss this issue in more detail when we meet."Barnier's response gave Barclay's proposals short shrift, underlining the fact that the EU is still focused on implementing the full withdrawal agreement, saying that the citizens' rights aspects of the deal were part of an "overall and comprehensive approach" which could not be separated."It is therefore far from straightforward to identify which provisions would need to be 'carved out' as part of the ringfencing exercise proposed by the House of Commons in February, with the risk of unequal treatment of certain categories of citizens," Barnier said.Our Brexit Insider Facebook group is the best place for up-to-date news and analysis about Britain's departure from the EU, direct from Business Insider's political reporters.
