There’s no method in this madness as <keyword id="136180" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="director-Sajid-Khan">director Sajid Khan</keyword> attempted to create a <keyword id="2368861" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Multi-starrer-entertainer">multi-starrer entertainer</keyword> <keyword id="6485088" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="wit">wit</keyword>hout sparkling wit, intelligence and a tight <keyword id="6371619" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="plot">plot</keyword> that would have produced some rollicking fun and an intriguing escapade. But <em>Humshakals</em> never rose above <keyword id="2368891" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tiresome-gags">tiresome gags</keyword> and <keyword id="2368890" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Banal-humour">banal humour</keyword> in spite of some <keyword id="2368892" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Good-acting">good acting</keyword>. Still, here’s the surprise of surprise, the movie has hit <keyword id="18712" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Gold">gold</keyword> at the <keyword id="827271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Box-Office">domestic box office</keyword>, raking in Rs 40.13 crore nett in the first three days (trade figure Rs 34.91 crore). It is the 4th biggest opening weekend this year after <em><keyword id="6593120" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jai-Ho">Jai Ho</keyword></em> (Rs 60.68 crore), <em><keyword id="6427325" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gunday">Gunday</keyword></em> (Rs 43.93 crore) and <em>Holiday</em> (Rs 41.32 crore).<br />

“<em>Humshakals</em> Fri 12.50 cr, Sat 12.59 cr, Sun 15.04 cr. Total: Rs 40.13 cr nett India biz,” tweeted Bollywood trade analyst and film critic, Taran Adarsh. Overseas total is approximately $2.02 million or Rs 12.16 crore from 40 countries, according to Adarsh. However, Monday collections at home saw a sheer drop of more than 60%, reaching a little over Rs 5 crore as per industry estimates. Total <keyword id="1996076" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-collections">domestic collections</keyword> after Day IV stood at Rs 45.23 crore nett, which means the movie is all set to hit the <keyword id="2368887" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rs-50-crore-mark">Rs 50 crore mark</keyword> at home by Day V. Although it is a <keyword id="87291" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="big-budget-movie">big budget movie</keyword> and cost a whopping Rs 75 crore including P&amp;A, <keyword id="106474" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Fox-Star-Studios">Fox Star Studios</keyword> and <keyword id="22777" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vashu-Bhagnani">Vashu Bhagnani</keyword>’s <em>Humshakals</em> has acted smart and already bagged Rs 45 crore by selling its satellite and music rights.<br />

<em>Humshakals</em> hit nearly 3,000 screens and it is the third <keyword id="2368881" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Widest-release">widest release</keyword> of 2014, behind <em>Jai Ho</em> and <em>Holiday</em>. Going by the <keyword id="2368884" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Opening-day-performance">opening day performance</keyword>, it ranks third this year – Rs 12.50 crore nett on Friday (June 20). Salman Khan-starrer <em>Jai Ho</em> tops the list with Rs 17.50 crore while Ranveer Singh-Arjun Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra-starrer <em>Gunday</em> amassed Rs 15.50 crore on <keyword id="2368879" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Debut-day">debut day</keyword>.<br />

<br /> Coming back to the critical part of the movie, we were literally at a loss to track the <keyword id="1097560" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="storyline">storyline</keyword>. Here are three male stars – <keyword id="333" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saif-Ali-Khan">Saif Ali Khan</keyword> (<keyword id="2368848" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ashok-Singhania">Ashok Singhania</keyword>, the tycoon), his best friend <keyword id="1420" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Riteish-Deshmukh">Riteish Deshmukh</keyword> (<keyword id="6358442" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kumar">Kumar</keyword>) and <keyword id="17416" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ram-Kapoor">Ram Kapoor</keyword> (Ashok’s <keyword id="529153" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Wicked">wicked</keyword> <keyword id="2368847" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mamaji-Kunwar-Amarnath-Singh">Mamaji Kunwar Amarnath Singh</keyword> who is after his wealth) – but to complicate matters, you will find them all in triple roles. Also, true to Bollywood <em>ishtyle</em>, Ram Kapoor manages to pack off Ashok and Kumar to a <keyword id="495099" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="mental-asylum">mental asylum</keyword> where their <keyword id="2368862" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Doppelgangers">doppelgangers</keyword> are being treated.<br />
 <br /> What follows is pure mayhem, especially when a third set of Ashok and Kumar (this time created with the help of plastic surgery) comes on board to dupe the real duo. The baddie (Ram Kapoor) also gets his fair share of lookalikes and all three <keyword id="2368864" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Male-leads">male leads</keyword> caper around as females in various outfits and hair-dos. The climax at the <keyword id="118569" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="House-of-Commons">House of Commons</keyword> was as muddled and wobbly as the <keyword id="2368854" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Multi-layered-plot">multi-layered plot</keyword> and fails to tickle us. Sajid also got hold of three dazzling female leads – <keyword id="654350" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tamannaah-Bhatia">Tamannaah Bhatia</keyword> (<keyword id="2425" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shanaya">Shanaya</keyword> who is Ashok’s lady love), <keyword id="8112" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bipasha-Basu">Bipasha Basu</keyword> (<keyword id="792912" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="mishti">Mishti</keyword>, Kumar’s love interest) and <keyword id="7427" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Esha-Gupta">Esha Gupta</keyword> (Dr <keyword id="1385858" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shivani-Gupta">Shivani Gupta</keyword> who was taking care of Ashok and Kumar in the asylum) – but they had little to do in this movie.<br />
 <br /> Going by its <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword> performance, the audience must have given a thumbs-up to <em>Humshakals</em>. But even a commercially successful movie may have a great many pitfalls. As film critic Saibal Chatterjee so aptly says, “<em>Humshakals</em> is an execrable comedy of horrors that plumbs the depths of stupidity and crassness... Sorry, Mr Khan, no matter how much money your film ends up with at the box office, the joke is entirely on you!”<br />

<p>Hello fellow work-from-homies and welcome back to Trending, Business Insider Prime's weekly newsletter of the latest tech industry developments. </p><p>I'm your host, Alexei Oreskovic, Business Insider's West Coast bureau chief and global tech editor. </p><h3>This week: A risky April calendar and Amazon's biggest day of the year</h3><p>Whether you live for April Fool's Day or consider it a tiresome tradition, you probably agree that this isn't the right time for pranks that could mislead people.</p><p>Google sent word throughout the company last week to halt all April Fool's Day gags and instructed staff <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-google-cancels-april-fools-day-jokes-pandemic-2020-3">to "suss out" any planned pranks</a> that might have slipped under management's radar. Other big companies did the same (and they'll spend an anxious Wednesday praying that all their employees got the memo).</p><p>The untold April Fool's jokes will ultimately be a painless cost for tech companies write off. The same can't be said of other events on the calendar.</p><p>The Summer Olympics that were due to kick off this July in Japan will leave a lot of businesses reeling from their postponement. Tokyo hotels and restaurants that were banking on the games will suffer. But the pain will also be shared by tech companies like Airbnb and Uber, whose multi-billion dollar valuations are based upon tapping into local businesses. </p><p>On Monday, Airbnb announced it would put up $250 million to help its hosts weather the COVID-19 cancellation storm - it's a nice move, but $250 million isn't much for a service that's estimated to generate <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cost-of-airbnbs-covid-19-refund-policy-borne-by-hosts-2020-3">$2.5 billion a month in bookings</a>.</p><p>And I imagine there are a lot of Airbnb hosts in Japan with properties that will now sit vacant in July. If they start asking Airbnb for reimbursements, it could get expensive. </p><p>Similarly, the missing marketing that would have accompanied the Olympics will be felt by online ad platforms like Google and Facebook. As Hugh Langley writes, the combination of the Olympics postponement and the general travel deep-freeze <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-may-see-first-ever-advertising-revenue-drop-2020-3">will leave a big hole in Google's revenue</a> - so much so that at least one Wall Street analyst expects Google to post its first-ever year-on-year revenue decline later this year. </p><p>That brings us to another big July event: Amazon Prime Day. This corporate paean to the shopping gods doesn't have the history or the mythology of the Olympic games, but it has quickly earned its place in the pantheon of consumer traditions. And as Eugene Kim reports, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-invites-sellers-to-prime-day-amid-covid-19-logistics-issues-2020-3">Amazon is not about to call it off so easily. </a></p><p>According to leaked emails that Eugene obtained, Amazon is pushing full steam ahead with this summer's Prime Day, telling merchants to be ready to ship their inventory by May.</p><p>It's a tricky proposition for Amazon. The company's supply chain and warehouses are already straining to provide consumers with essential items, from face masks to toilet paper. Amazon's biggest day of the year is on a collision course with the coronavirus

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Facebook</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Publishers are scrambling to try and figure out <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-explains-facebook-news-feed-changes-2018-1">whether Facebook's big algorithm change</a> will impact their business.</strong></li><li><strong>Many are confused and anxious, while others see a big win for quality publishers.</strong></li><li><strong>There is a sense of betrayal among some <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword> companies, given how active Facebook has courted the industry. </strong></li><li><strong>Others say they've already long ago moved away from relying too much on Facebook for web traffic.</strong></li></ul><p> </p><p>Across the media industry, publishers are trying to figure out what this<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-explains-facebook-news-feed-changes-2018-1"> big Facebook algorithm change means</a>.</p><p>According to more than half a dozen conversations with media executives, the early reactions range widely, including: </p><ul><li><strong>Deep anxiety </strong></li><li><strong>Shoulder shrugging </strong></li><li><strong>Fatalistic acceptance </strong></li><li><strong>Betrayal and frustration </strong></li><li><strong>Exuberant cheerleading</strong></li></ul><p>Here's what Business Insider is hearing regarding the thrust of some of these Facebook-related discussions happening inside publishers' walls:</p><h2>Reaction 1: Duh. Publishers should have seen this coming</h2><p>Several publishers have long warned against putting all their eggs in the Facebook basket, and have tried to diversify revenue streams. And they've also kept their eyes wide open when it comes to Facebook's level of caring about media partners.</p><p>Bryan Goldberg, CEO of the female-focused publisher Bustle, said there is no reason to panic if you've been paying attention. "This one was predictable, and smart CEO's should be years ahead of it in their thinking," he told Business Insider.</p><p>But he also warned that Facebook has to be careful in being too blunt, and becoming inhospitable to media companies.</p><p>"Facebook will need to come up with some solution," he said. "Users absolutely want to read professionally-created content and news. So they will either fulfill this demand, or they will cede a huge market opportunity to Apple and Google. "</p><h2>Reaction 2: Is Facebook the boy who cried algorithm?</h2><p>As one social media-centric publisher noted, Facebook has said this sort of thing before, and not entirely followed through. Indeed,<a href="http://www.adweek.com/digital/news-feed-algorithm-friends-family-core-values/"> in June of 2016 the company similarly announced that friends and family posts </a>would be prioritized in the news feed, and the predicted publisher armageddon didn't unfold.</p><div><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"There is a non-linear relations between what they say and what happens," this person said. "In this case, it's n</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">ot clear what is PR posturing and reality."</span></p><h2><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Philippe Wojazer/Reuters</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></h2><h2><strong>Reaction 3: You told us we mattered</strong></h2><p>Here's why several publishers feel super frustrated: in their eyes, Facebook led them on.</p><p>They say that Facebook has long encouraged publishers to build out audiences on Facebook, working with them directly to get their content viewed, testing various ad products with them, and in several cases, paying them to make content for Facebook specifically - whether that's live streaming shows or series for Facebook Watch.</p><p>Now, their feeling can be summed up as: WTF? You pushed us to go all in on Facebook and now you're sidelining us? </p><p>"It's kind of strange, this mass deprioritization," said one veteran Facebook publisher. "We've been very much encouraged to build audiences here. People spend lots of money to build these operations. At some point it grows tiresome. You start thinking, over time is this really worth it?"</p><p>If you're a publisher that has a strong website, as well as an audience on other platforms like Instagram and YouTube, this is perhaps less of of concern. But for many a publisher that has launched a property first and foremost on Facebook, it's scary.</p><p>There's also frustration about Facebook's communication of its rollout. "The way it's worded is so opaque," this publisher said. "Fear the way they put this into effect, it treats all content the same."</p><h2><span style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Reaction 4: This is a big win for the good guys</strong></span></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On the flip side, several publishers who spoke to Business Insider are actually encouraged by the idea that Facebook is trying to weed out low quality content from its news feed. They think they'll end up winning in the end.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Publishers that have talked to Facebook directly said that the algo change is aimed at pushing out passive video content that few people share or engage with, and articles that send people to stories off of Facebook for very short visits (i.e. click bait).</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you have real, organic audiences, and you produce video content people actively seek out, you should be fine, or so the thinking goes.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Succeeding at video has never been easy, and Facebook's presentation of video always felt forced and non-sustainable," said Goldberg. "Publishers should be creating long-form video with an eye towards distribution on dozens of platforms. The short-form video craze was obviously never going to work."<br /></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Warner Bros.</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lilian Leong is the COO of 9GAG, a purveyor of funny videos and memes.<a href="https://www.facebook.com/9gag/"> It has over 28 million Facebook fans. </a></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Leong was non-plussed about the move. "Change is constant in the social media world," she said. "Our r</span>ule from day one is, we make shareable content. That's what people want to share with their friends and family. I never gamed the algorithm. Who can do that? We don't feel betrayed. If anything, this raises the bar."</p><h2>Reaction 5: This is a calculated move by Facebook to boost traffic and drive more revenue</h2><p>Most publishers and advertisers using Facebook have accepted the fact they they may need to pay to run ads that direct people to their content, simply because hoping that all of a company's posts get seen or shared is impossible, given how crowded the Facebook news feed is.</p><p>But several publishers see this tweak as a way to make it crystal clear: pay up publishers, or you'll disappear.</p><p>Another top media executive theorized that it's more than a money grab. Facebook's users are getting bored, and there's some evidence of audience stagnation, as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-hits-wall-usage-falls-wieser-pivotal-2018-1">Business Insider has reported.</a></p><p>"Sharing is down on Facebook's platform and they are freaking out about it," this person said. "I think the real story<br />is the American public is not using Facebook as much."</p><h2>Reaction 6: Facebook doesn't even know what's going to happen. But the bad guys always figure it out</h2><p>As one veteran Facebook publisher noted, it's probably going to take a while for the marketplace, and even Facebook, to gauge the true impact of the algo tweak. Facebook is so massive, and 2 billion people essentially get a unique news feed every day. </p><p>"It's h<span style="font-weight: 400;">ard for anyone to know how this will all play out," said this publisher. "</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"></span><span style="font-weight: 400;">It's such a complex algorithmic system. And any system that is built toward a certain reward system can have unintended consequences. You could end up with a whole new genre of weirdness. Facebook may not even know what's coming."</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"></span><span style="font-weight: 400;"></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Another publishers questioned how impactful the tweak will be toward solving what Facebook says is its ultimate mission. </span></p><p>"They say they want to emphasize the surfacing of what your friends like," said one digital media veteran. "Well, that's how the fake news thing happened.
