31 Indian colleges have entered the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Times+Higher+Education+World+University+Rankings+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Times Higher Education World University Rankings </a>2016-17. 
	 
	<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Institute+of+Science&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian Institute of Science</a> (IISc) Bangalore has climbed to the highest position ever achieved by an Indian institute till date. Though, no Indian institute has yet broken into the top 200, IISc holds a rank in the 201-250 band. The last time around it was in the band of 251-300. Beside IISc, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Institute+of+Technology+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian Institute of Technology </a>(<keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword>) <keyword id="6356654" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bombay">Bombay</keyword> also made it in the top 400. IIT Bombay however, remains in the same 351-400 band as in last year. 
	 
	 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IIT+Delhi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">IIT Delhi</a>, IIT Kanpur and IIT <keyword id="6357595" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Madras">Madras</keyword> were placed in the 401-500 bracket; IIT Kharagpur, IIT <keyword id="115248" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Roorkee">Roorkee</keyword> and <keyword id="6361218" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jadavpur-University">Jadavpur University</keyword> in the 501-600 group; and, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Aligarh+Muslim+University%2C+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Aligarh Muslim University, </a>Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, University of Calcutta, University of Delhi, IIT Guwahati, NIT Rourkela, Panjab University, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Sri Venkateswara University, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and <keyword id="171517" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tezpur-University">Tezpur University</keyword> in the 601-800 group. 
	 
	 India has a number of 19 institutions in the top 200, which is 2 more than the last year. 
	 "India has four new entries in the top 800, the country's strong performance is partly thanks to the country recognizing the importance of participating in global benchmarking exercises; just last month the government launched a new funding-backed project aimed at catapulting <keyword id="6386086" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institutes-of-Technology">Indian Institutes of Technology</keyword> to the top of world university rankings, " said Phil Baty, editor of <keyword id="1161482" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Times-Higher-Education-World-University-Rankings">Times Higher Education World University Rankings</keyword> in a statement. 
	 "The government's focus on improving India's standing in global rankings - and even the introduction of the India-specific rankings - has started to yield results. Going forward, there needs to be discussions between ministries to facilitate free flow of students and faculty “Rohin <keyword id="53" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kapoor">Kapoor</keyword>, director at <keyword id="6358918" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deloitte">Deloitte</keyword> in India, told ET.”Once internationalization and globalization happens, India's rankings will improve significantly. This is one of the critical areas where India is lagging behind," Kapoor further added. 
	 This year Times <keyword id="3676089" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="higher-education-world-university-rankings">Higher Education World University Rankings</keyword> expanded their rankings to 980 as compared to 800 last year. Institutes ranked in the 801+ bandare Acharya Nagarjuna University, Amity University, Amrita University, <keyword id="6386394" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Andhra-University">Andhra University</keyword>, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Manipal University, Osmania University, SASTRA University, Sathyabama University, SRM University and Vellore Institute of Technology. 
	 
	 Amrita University and Andhra University slipped down to the 801+ group. However, on the brighter side NIT Rourkela, Sri Venkateswara University, TIFR and Tezpur University made their way in the top 800 list. 
	 “This year's expanded list is a testimony to how competitive global <keyword id="6375224" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="higher-education">higher education</keyword> has become. The 980 universities come from 79 different countries,” <keyword id="3660284" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="batty">Batty</keyword> told ET. 
	 US for the first time in 12 years lost the first rank in the list with <keyword id="150557" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-Oxford">University of Oxford</keyword> becoming the world's top university. Others in the top five include California Institute of Technology, <keyword id="101399" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Stanford-University">Stanford University</keyword>, University of Cambridge and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Anyone who graduated from 50 of the world's <keyword id="14088085" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="top-universities" source="Orion">top universities</keyword> and <keyword id="12387433" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="colleges" source="Orion">colleges</keyword> within the last five years can now apply for a High Potential Individual (HPI) visa. As Insider previously reported, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/graduates-top-us-universities-colleges-uk-visa-without-job-offer-2022-5">they won't need to have a job offer lined up, and their families can join them too</a>. Those holding a Ph.D. will be able to stay for three years — alumni with a bachelor's or master's degree can stay for two. They'll have to apply for a different visa once their HPI visa runs out. It's not dependent on nationality but on the college they graduated from. <a href="https://www.gov.uk/high-potential-individual-visa/how-much-it-costs">The visa costs £715</a>. Applicants will also need to pay a surcharge towards the UK's National Health Service, and have £1,270, (about 1490 euros or $1,604) in funds to prove they can support themselves. A fee of £210 is needed to verify their qualifications are genuine. It's all part of the UK government's switch to a <a href="https://www.gov.uk/high-potential-individual-visa">"skills-based immigration system"</a> since leaving the European Union. The country wants to attract highly skilled graduates to work in industries like finance, tech, and sciences. Every year, UK officials compile a list of what they consider to be the 50 best higher education institutions globally. The visa is part of updates to the UK <keyword id="11940510" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="immigration" source="Orion">immigration</keyword> system aimed at attracting highly skilled workers to the country. Before moving to the UK, US citizens typically need a UK-based firm to provide a concrete job offer and agree to sponsor their work visa paperwork. Now, under the new High Potential Individual (HPI) visa scheme, they'll be able to apply to move to the country without an offer, and bring their family along — as long as they obtained a degree from a "top" university within the last five years. Eligible graduates must come from universities named on the <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/high-potential-individual-visa-global-universities-list/high-potential-individual-visa-global-universities-list-2021">UK government's annual list</a> of what it considers to be the best 50 universities globally. In order to qualify for that list, each institution must have appeared on two of three global rankings; The Times Higher <keyword id="11897808" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="education" source="Orion">Education</keyword> World University Rankings, Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings, and/or The Academy of Ranking World Universities. Twenty US universities appear on the UK government's list for 2022. The majority of other universities are situated in Europe and Asia.Graduates with a bachelors or masters degree will be eligible for a two year visa, those holding a PhD can stay for three years. The visa cannot be extended, but a person can apply to a different visa scheme once it expires. There are other stipulations. Applicants must be proficient in English. They must also show that they can support themselves and have at least £1,270 ($1604) in available funds. The visa costs £715 ($903). Applicants will also have to contribute to the UK's National Health Service, costing up to £1,872 ($2,365).<h2>The visa change is part of the UK's new points-based immigration system</h2>The visa is part of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/johnson-may-revive-imperial-units-in-uk-jubilee-distraction-reports-2022-5">British government's reordering</a> of its immigration policy towards a "<a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/uk-points-based-immigration-system-employer-information/the-uks-points-based-immigration-system-an-introduction-for-employers">points-based system</a>" since leaving the European Union in January 2021.Under the system, visa applicants need to amass '70 points' in order to secure skilled worker status. It aims to attract candidates it deems to be highly skilled for tech, startup and finance roles in particular. This new visa offer means that the UK can continue to attract the best and brightest from across the globe, <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/news/points-based-system-welcomes-high-skilled-graduates-to-uk">said</a> chancellor of the exchequer Rishi Sunak. In 2019, the government changed its system to let any foreign national that graduates from a British university stay for two years after graduation — previously they had to leave within four months of completion.The plans have drawn some criticism. The 30 best European cities to spend a semester studying abroad

In a matter of great pride for the Indian education system, often rebuked for its traditional ways, 16 institutes from India have found place in the list of 200 <keyword id="587884" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="top-universities">top universities</keyword> in the world. The rankings come from Times Higher Education BRICS and Emerging Economies. 
 
To make things better, the Indian Institute of Science has even managed to break into the top 20 and has been listed at No. 16, a first for the institute. Being ranked at 29, IIT Bombay has also entered the top 30. Last year, these institutes were at the numbers 25 and 37, respectively. 
 
Other Indian institutes that are in the list are IIT-Madras (to 36 from 44), IIT Delhi (to 37 from 56) and IIT-Guwahati (to 83 from 98). Some new names in the list are Jadavpur University, Savitribhai Phule Pune University, University of Calcutta, University of Delhi, Amrita University and Andhra University. However, IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Roorkee, IIT-Kanpur, Aligarh Muslim University and Panjab University were declined places in the list. 
 
The top five in the list are Peking University (China), Tsinghua University (China), Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russia), University of Cape Town (South Africa) and National Taiwan University (Taiwan). 
 
"India will have to work harder to compete with other developing nations, such as Russia, which have a higher proportion of institutions in the upper echelons of the table. India is the only BRICS nation without a university in the top 10," Phil Baty, editor, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, told ET. "With the population of young people in the country continuing to expand, resulting in further pressure on resources, it is now more crucial than ever that India invests in research and strengthens its links with other nations," he continued.

16 Indian institutes feature in world’s top 200 universities list!

Boitano</div></div>An extraordinary amount of student misconduct — <a href="http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/queensland-university-students-allegedly-caught-cheating-bribing-examiners-and-bullying-staff/story-fnihsrf2-1226707722649">including assaults, cheating, and bribery — allegedly takes place at Australia's Queensland University</a>, according to documents obtained by The Courier-Mail.
Queensland is one of <keyword id="6355478" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Australia">Australia</keyword>'s oldest and largest universities, and was ranked as one of the top five schools in the country by both the most recent <a href="http://www.shanghairanking.com/">Academic Ranking of World Universities</a> and <a href="http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2012-13/world-ranking/range/001-200/order/country%7Casc">Times Higher Education World University Rankings</a>.

An Engineering student recieved a warning from the school after allegedly offering an exam supervisor a "little present'' in the hope they would "go easy'' on them, while a Business student allegedly offered money to their supervisor during an exam.

The university expelled a student after they allegedly assaulted a security officer and caused almost $2,000 damage to a university building.
</li>
<li>
Queensland expelled a medical student after they allegedly "harassed, threatened and bullied'' staff, assaulted a staff member, and "prejudiced the reputation of the university," according to the report.

<li>
A Pharmacy student was caught after allegedly writing exam answers in "unusually large letters'' so another student could see them.
</li>
<li>
Two <keyword id="3216" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="students">students</keyword> at a different university were found to have cheated by allegedly writing notes on one student's arm and one student's leg.

Australian University Students Have Been Accused Of Bribing Teachers, Assaulting Staff, And Blatantly Cheating

Thomas/Getty Images</a>College rankings don't really tell you much unless you know the methodology that goes with them.</div></div></div>College rankings are ubiquitous as the school year starts. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/best-colleges-in-america-2017-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">U.S. News &amp; World Report, Niche, and Times Higher Education all released rankings in September. </a>The proliferation of these rankings have led some to revolt against the concept of neatly bucketing schools on lists where they are in the "top" or "bottom" of rankings, especially as top performers tend to be expensive private schools, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-crisis-mortgage-crisis-2017-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">and ballooning student debt</a> calls into <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/s?q=student+debt&amp;vertical=&amp;author=Abby%20Jackson&amp;contributed=1&amp;sort=date" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">question college affordability.</a>Frank Bruni, a columnist at New York Times, wrote an especially damning a piece ridiculing college rankings he called <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/18/opinion/sunday/why-college-rankings-are-a-joke.html?mcubz=1&amp;_r=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">"Why College Rankings Are a Joke."</a>"The rankings nourish the myth that the richest, most selective colleges have some corner on superior education; don't adequately recognize public institutions that prioritize access and affordability; and do insufficient justice to the particular virtues of individual campuses," <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/18/opinion/sunday/why-college-rankings-are-a-joke.html?mcubz=1&amp;_r=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">he wrote before the U.S. News rankings came out in 2016.</a>Yet the rankings are still highly cited, and do offer important data about aspects of a particular college, if readers are able to decipher them.For those who are having a hard time understanding why college rankings all offer different results, Business Insider put together a few charts to break down the anatomy of each.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Ana Pelisson/Business Insider</div></div></div>U.S. News has been ranking American colleges annually for more than 30 years.
