Orcas have been having a moment thanks to a <a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-has-a-group-of-orcas-suddenly-started-attacking-boats/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">critically endangered subpopulation</a> of orcas <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/killer-whales-may-be-imitating-orca-striking-sinking-boats-researchers-2023-5">targeting and, in three cases, sinking boats</a> off the coast of Spain and Portugal.The encounters prompted tongue-in-cheek memes <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-atlantic-orca-story-reactions-killer-whales-sadistic-jerks-2023-6">portraying orcas as revolutionaries</a> fighting back against environmental destruction brought about by humans. But orca <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-killer-whales-orcas-attack-sink-boats-2023-6">experts say</a> the animals are most likely just engaging in playful behavior, not organizing a revolution.Generally speaking, killer whales do not pose much of a threat to humans.In the case of the boat encounters near the Iberian Peninsula, no humans have been harmed. In fact, there are no documented cases of an orca <a href="https://www.discoverwildlife.com/animal-facts/marine-animals/are-killer-whales-dangerous-to-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">intentionally harming</a> a human in the wild.<a href="https://hannestrager.com/about/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hanne Strager</a>, a Danish biologist and whale researcher, said people off the coast of Norway have been <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tb03_fw4VmI" target="_blank" rel="noopener">swimming in close proximity to killer whales</a> for decades."The killer whales do not seem to be at all interested in people. They are interested in food, which for them in that area is herring," Strager, who co-founded the Andenes Whale Center in Norway, told Insider. "I think they just think humans are some odd thing, certainly not food, and not really anything that they are bothered by."That's exactly why the orcas do not attack — they do not see people as food."When you look around the world, the different types of populations have specialized in eating different types of prey," said Andrew Trites, director of the Marine Mammal Research Unit at the University of British Columbia, adding that some orca populations primarily eat fish, while others eat marine mammals. "They stick to what they know, and humans have never been part of their diet," he told Insider, noting the Iberian orcas primarily eat bluefin tuna. Trites added that he thought it would be unlikely for an orca to mistake a human for a seal given the whales' intellectual abilities.The Iberian population members targeting boats also do not seem to be interested in humans, Strager noted. The encounters typically involve the orca approaching the boat from behind and striking the rudder, sometimes until it is broken and the boat is immobilized.One crew member who was on a vessel that was sunk by the whales told Strager that as soon as the boat began to sink, the orcas lost all interest in it and left. As with any large, wild animal, there's an inherent danger involved, just as there would be if a human approached a herd of elephants.And even if the orcas aren't trying to attack people, the boat encounters are still dangerous, as is a boat sinking in the ocean with or without an orca present.Researchers have also expressed some <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/killer-whales-targeting-boats-could-end-badly-for-the-orcas-2023-6">concern over the perception that orcas are attacking people</a>."If we become so frustrated with their behavior that we think they don't deserve to be protected anymore, then it is a risk for the whales," Strager said, noting the orca population near the Iberian Peninsula is severly endangered.

This chilling movie is probably behind SeaWorld's decision to close a killer whale exhibit

The documentary "Blackfish" tells the story of a <keyword id="1607863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="killer-whale">killer whale</keyword> named Tilikum, who has been accused of killing three people but is still retained by <keyword id="233489" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="SeaWorld">SeaWorld</keyword>. The film blames the entertainment industry for turning these normally social and intelligent <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackfish-movie-tilikum-seaworld-story-2013-8" target="_blank">wild animals into psychotic killers</a>.
Since a trainer was killed in 2010, Tilikum hasn't been participating in shows, instead spending his <a href="http://theorcaproject.wordpress.com/2010/09/03/seeing-is-believing-tilikums-lonely-life-after-dawn/" target="_blank">days bobbing in empty pools alone</a>, according to a 2010 report from The Orca Project.
So why is SeaWorld holding onto an animal known to be aggressive (even if releasing him into the wild may be a bad idea, they could donate him to a foundation that could give him a larger pool in the sea and more stimulation)?
"It's quite simple to answer," former SeaWorld trainer Jeffrey Ventre said in "Blackfish." "His semen is worth a lot of money."
The big mammal is milked for his semen regularly by trainers, who use it to inseminate female <keyword id="134816" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Whales">whales</keyword> and create more babies.
"Over the years Tilikum has been one of the main breeding whales at SeaWorld," former trainer Samantha Berg said. "It's brilliant because they can inseminate way more female whales because they can get his sperm and freeze it. Then he's basically operating as a sperm banker."
Should we be breeding more whales like Tilikum? Berg says this could be a big mistake.
"In a reputable breeding program, rule number one is you certainly would not breed an animal that has shown a history of aggression toward humans. Imagine if you had a pit bull who had killed, that animal would have likely been put down," she said in the movie. 
SeaWorld claims that the incidents pinned on Tilikum are tragic accidents, not signs of continued aggression toward humans. In an email to Business Insider, Fred Jacobs, the head of communications for SeaWorld Entertainment, Inc., said:
Research on defining behavioral tendencies makes it clear that in order to classify an animal's temperament, the behavior must be consistently demonstrated (Reale et al., 2007 [<a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17437562" target="_blank">in the journal Biological Reviews</a>]). As our staff testified in the OSHA proceedings, Tilikum was not considered an aggressive animal and did not have a single incident report of aggression during his time in our care. Even trainers who are now opposed to the zoological display of killer whales describe Tilikum as a very even-tempered animal.
Jacobs also told us in a separate email that he thinks (but could not confirm) that Tilikum's sperm is "not currently being used in our artificial insemination program for killer whales."
Nonetheless, Tilikum's progeny are widespread, with his genes found in 54% of the whales in SeaWorld's collections, according to Berg.

The film suggests SeaWorld's whales are slowly going crazy, like prisoners kept in a bathtub for life.
SeaWorld called the film "<a href="http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/21/us/seaworld-blackfish-qa">inaccurate and misleading</a>" when it aired on CNN in October, and now, the company has gone to even greater lengths to restore its reputation among people who feel SeaWorld was responsible for the death of the whale's third victim.
On Dec. 31, The Orlando Business Journal conducted an online poll asking whether 'Blackfish' had changed readers' perception of SeaWorld, which has one of its three parks in Orlando. When the poll remarkably revealed that 99% of respondents said the film did not change their perception of the theme park, Orlando Business Journal reporter Richard Bilbao decided to check just where all these votes were coming from.
The answer? <a href="http://www.bizjournals.com/orlando/blog/2014/01/seaworld-responds-to-blackfish-poll.html">SeaWorld</a>.
Bilbao reports that about 54% of the poll's 328 votes came from a single Orlando location, whose Internet Protocol Address linked it to SeaWorld Parks &amp; Entertainment.
Though 95% of respondents would have voted "No," even without SeaWorld's intervention, the tide has turned dramatically since SeaWorld's voting was made public Monday afternoon. The poll <a href="http://www.bizjournals.com/orlando/poll/results/13554572">currently shows</a> that 73% of more than 2,000 voters say "Blackfish" changed their perception of SeaWorld.
In response, a SeaWorld spokesperson Nick Gollattscheck <a href="http://www.bizjournals.com/orlando/blog/2014/01/seaworld-responds-to-blackfish-poll.html">told The Orlando Business Journal</a> that the votes came from passionate SeaWorld employees supporting their company.
"Our team members have strong feelings about their park and company, and we encouraged them to make their opinions known," Gollattscheck said. 
"Blackfish" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, 2013. When CNN aired the film in October, the broadcast sparked a conversation about how being kept in captivity can have destructive psychological effects on killer whales, and whether SeaWorld's treatment of its whales makes them unsafe for humans to be around. 
Among other negative ramifications SeaWorld suffered following the film, activists convinced musical acts like Willie Nelson and the Barenaked Ladies <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/willie-neslon-barenaked-ladies-heart-cancel-seaworld-performance-after-blackfish-documentary-2013-12">to cancel concerts</a> they'd been scheduled to play at its parks.
