<p><strong>Hi. I'm Aaron Weinman</strong>. Julian Robertson has died at the age of 90. The hedge-fund titan founded Tiger Management in 1980.</p><p>He turned about $8 million in start-up capital in the 1980s into more than $20 billion in assets under management throughout the 1990s.</p><p>Robertson's fund accurately predicted the dot-com bubble and underweighted the sector based on the belief that tech companies were overvalued due to a lack of cash flow. His fund <a href="https://medium.com/@mattia-c/the-man-who-bet-against-the-dotcom-bubble-and-missed-it-by-a-whisker-76d8da367d55">still lost billions</a> of dollars as a result of that bet, but it was Robertson's "I told you so" moment to many on Wall Street.</p><p>Another mea culpa might be Tiger's <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/WPcap/2000-03/31/077r-033100-idx.html">big bet on US Airways</a> — it controlled about a quarter of the airline at one point. It got in on the company's stock for about $17 apiece, and while this peaked to $80, it then spiraled back into the $20 range.</p><p>In investing — like gravity — what goes up, inevitably comes crashing down. Robertson closed his firm in late 2000 and returned money to investors.</p><p>One of his greatest achievements, however, is arguably the impact Robertson had on other investors. Julian Robertson, a pioneer in hedge funds and founder of Tiger Management, has died at 90 years of age. </strong>At its peak, Tiger Management managed about $21 billion in assets.</p><p>Since closing his fund in the year 2000, Robertson had been closely linked to some of the hedge-fund world's biggest names, many of whom he helped launch.</p><p>The Tiger Cubs — like Tiger Global founder Chase Coleman, Lee Ainslie who started Maverick Capital, and Philippe Laffont of Coatue fame — learned the ropes under Robertson and went on to found some of Wall Street's most successful hedge funds.</p><p>Coleman, in a statement to Insider, described Robertson as a "pioneer and a giant in our industry."</p><p>"He made the time to be a true mentor, always leading by example and pushing all of us to become the best versions of ourselves," Coleman said. Muscle pain</h3><p>Gardner says that tiger balm can help muscle pain in a number of ways:</p><ul><li>Camphor and menthol can increase blood circulation to the muscles and surrounding area. This may reduce inflammation and therefore provide <keyword id="12160488" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pain-relief" source="Orion">pain relief</keyword>.</li><li>Methyl salicylate can act as a numbing agent, which may dull the pain.</li><li>Capsicum may block nerve pain receptors, reducing the severity of muscle pain</li></ul><p>A <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20171409/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2010 study</a> found that in people with mild to moderate muscle strain, using a patch containing methyl salicylate and menthol resulted in a 40% greater pain reduction versus a placebo.</p><h3>2. Headaches</h3><p>Common headaches can be alleviated with Tiger Balm, due to its pain-relieving properties, Ingegno says. </p><p>You can rub the Tiger Balm into your temples, and even onto your neck and shoulders as well, especially if you're experiencing <a href="https://www.insider.com/tension-headache" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tension headaches</a>, Ingegno says.</p><p>A small <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20456191/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2010 study</a> found that topical menthol was superior to a placebo at relieving pain during a migraine attack, as well as relieving associated symptoms like nausea and light sensitivity.</p><h3><strong>3. Arthritis pain</strong></h3><p>Although many rub tiger balm on areas that are affected by arthritis, Gardner says the exact mechanism of how it works for the condition is unknown. But it may be due to the anti-inflammatory effects of menthol, capsicum, and cassia oil.</p><p>It may also be due to the fact that Tiger Balm is a <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/osteoarthritis/in-depth/pain-medications/art-20045899" target="_blank" rel="noopener">counterirritant</a>, temporarily distracting you from arthritis pain. </p><p>A <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2213422018301872" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2018 animal study</a> found that cassia extract reduced joint swelling in rats with formaldehyde-induced arthritis, suggesting that cassia has anti-arthritic properties.</p><h3>4. Cough and cold</h3><p>Tiger Balm can be used for more than just pain.<strong> </strong></p><p>Gardner says camphor acts as a mild decongestant, cough suppressant, and <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/drugs/22078-expectorant" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expectorant</a>  —a substance that helps remove mucus from your airways.</p><p>Furthermore, menthol also works to suppress coughs, and can also soothe irritated nasal and sinus pathways, says Gardner. In fact, <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4638412/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2012 study</a> found that inhaling menthol vapor can decrease cough reflex sensitivity, suppressing coughs.</p><p>When using Tiger Balm for this purpose, rub it on your chest, throat, and a tiny bit under your nose to experience symptom relief.</p><h2>Insider's takeaway</h2><p>Overall, more research in the way of larger-scale human studies is needed to determine how effective Tiger Balm is for various ailments. However, Tiger Balm is generally safe to use, so it doesn't hurt to give it a shot and see if it works for you.</p>

How to use the Chinese herbal solution Tiger Balm to relieve pain

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="20491" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tiger-Woods">Tiger Woods</keyword> was hospitalized after sustaining multiple injuries in a <keyword id="77938" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="car-crash">car crash</keyword> in <keyword id="6354803" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Los-Angeles">Los Angeles</keyword> on Tuesday.</li><li>Officials say his injuries are not life-threatening, but his <a href="https://twitter.com/Daniel_Rapaport/status/1364300162110136321">agent</a> said the golfer is "currently in surgery."</li><li>Below is a timeline of how the devastating rollover crash unfolded on Tuesday morning.</li></ul><p>Superstar golfer Tiger Woods is currently hospitalized after sustaining "multiple injuries" a major car crash in Los Angeles Tuesday morning.</p><p>Woods was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 2021 Genesis GV80 SUV, which rolled over on the side of the road in Ranchos Palos Verdes in south Los Angeles county. Woods "suffered multiple leg injuries" in the crash according to his agent, <a href="https://twitter.com/Daniel_Rapaport/status/1364300162110136321">Mark Steinberg</a>, and was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center to undergo surgery.</p><p>Officials said Woods sustained non-life-threatening injuries, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2021/02/23/sports/tiger-woods-crash">The New York Times</a> reported. The incident is still under investigation by authorities.</p><p>Here's a timeline of how the incident unfolded:</p><p>The single-vehicle crash happened at Hawthorne Boulevard, north of Palos Verdes Drive, at 7:12 a.m. local time on Tuesday, LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said during a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/LosAngelesCountySheriffsDepartment/videos/3926951313992398">press conference</a> Tuesday.</p><p>Authorities arrived at the scene six minutes later. Another crash occurred during the investigation of the incident because of "people being looky-loos," Villanueva said, but no injuries resulted from it.</p><p>There was no initial evidence of driver impairment, Villanueva said. When first responders went to extract Woods from the vehicle, he was alive and conscious and identified himself to Lomita Station Deputy Sheriff Carlos Gonzalez, who was the first officer on the scene.</p><p>"He told me his name was Tiger, and at that moment, I immediately recognized him," Gonzalez said at the press conference, adding that the golfer was unable to "stand under his own power" and was put on a backboard.</p><div type="image" title="GettyImages 1231347014" height="1249" width="2500" msid="81183261" hostid="261"></div><p>Chief Daryl Osby of the LA County Fire Department told reporters on Tuesday that first responders and firefighters were able to extract Woods from the vehicle using an axe and other prying tools. Osby also refuted earlier reports that the "Jaws of Life" - a hydraulic rescue tool used by emergency authorities - was used to pull Woods out of the car.</p><p>It was not immediately clear how long it took to extricate the golfer from the car. Osby said Woods was in "serious condition" but "stable enough to transport to a trauma center" following the crash.</p><p>"If the injuries were more dramatic and they couldn't control an airway, then they would have transported him to the nearest facility, but the fact that he was stable enough to be transported to a hospital further away - which was the most appropriate hospital to be transported [to] because of the nature of the injuries, the nature of the incident, says that it was a very serious injury. He met trauma center criteria, but he wasn't so serious that he needed to be transported to [the] nearest hospital for immediate life-saving procedures," Osby continued.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2021-02-23/tiger-woods-injured-after-car-accident-la">Los Angeles Times</a> reported that Woods' injuries included a shattered ankle and two leg fractures, but authorities have yet to confirm the extent of his injuries.</p><p>The golf star was "lucky to be alive" following the crash, Villanueva said. He said the area "has a high frequency of accidents," and that Woods was driving at a "relatively greater speed than normal."</p><p>The speed limit for the road where the crash occurred is 45 miles per hour.</p><p>Villanueva said the vehicle, which authorities said sustained "major damage," traveled several hundred feet from the center median, adding that it also hit the curb and then a tree. The Times reported that the vehicle rolled over several times.</p><div type="image" title="tiger woods car accident" height="1665" width="2220" msid="81183262" hostid="261"></div><p>In 2009, Woods sustained minor injuries in an accident outside of his Florida mansion after his Cadillac Escalade collided with a fire hydrant and a tree while he was "driving erratically" late at night.</p><p>The crash followed a National Enquirer report about Woods' then-alleged affair, which was published just two days earlier, and played a part in fueling rumors regarding scandals in Woods' personal life. </p><p>"Over the next few months, many other women came forward claiming they had affairs with Tiger, including 24-year-old Los Angeles cocktail waitress Jaimee Grubbs," <a href="https://www.insider.com/tiger-woods-controversies-2017-5#many-of-his-endorsement-partners-dropped-woods-over-the-controversy-including-companies-like-att-gatorade-gillette-golf-digest-and-tag-heuer-but-tigers-biggest-partner-nike-stuck-with-him-10">Insider's Cork Gaines</a> reported. "US Weekly published transcripts of a voicemail allegedly from Woods to Grubbs, in which he asks Grubbs to change her voicemail greeting in case his wife tries to call."</p><p>A number of companies dropped their partnerships with the golf star in the wake of the controversy, including Gatorade, Gillette, Golf Digest, and Tag Heuer. Woods later admitted to being unfaithful to his then-wife Elin Nordegren, and the pair filed for divorce in 2010.</p><p>Woods was involved in another automobile-related incident in Florida in May 2017, when he was was discovered unconscious in his vehicle and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiger-woods-dui-arrest-report-2017-5">arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence</a>.</p><p><em>This story is developing. This enabled the budget airlines to expand further and in the process increase prices as other airlines were biting the dust. Fuels costs are also a problem and the direct impact was and is being borne by the consumers. But, things are changing rapidly. More international players such as <keyword id="86568" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Air-Asia">Air Asia</keyword> have stepped onto the Indian turf to begin a fresh round of price wars.<br />

Air Asia has started operation in 5-6 cities in India including Goa, Bangalore and Chennai. And the prices they are offering are quite low. In many cases cheaper than the closest Indian budget airlines. This has forced the others to follow suite and lower their respective prices as well. For the consumers it is a victory as the charges have been increasing at a steady pace.<br />

This will make air travel a little better. Many reports suggest, Indian budget airlines will try to woo the customers with cheaper airfares and perks such as extra baggage allowance. The industry and carriers do deny these reports. Air specialists and check-in experts on the other hand do say, one cannot refute that these things have happened in the past and can possibly happen again. Priority check-in and preferential seating for regular travellers can also come to light.<br />
<br /> After Air Asia, budget airlines such as <keyword id="204033" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Tiger-Airways">Tiger Airways</keyword> and few gulf carriers are also looking at India as a lucrative market to expand business. Moreover, getting a ticket on trains is becoming harder by the day, flights become an easy way to travel. Indigo also wants to phase-out its old jets and replace them with the new ones. And with nearly two years without this type of meetup, there's plenty for the industry to catch up on.</p><p>In the commercial aviation realm, Boeing and Airbus are - unsurprisingly - the main attractions with support from their airline partners. But smaller players including Brazil's <keyword id="12337321" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="embraer" source="Orion">Embraer</keyword> and Russia's Irkut Corporation are also in attendance with the hopes of winning orders for their competing products, offering airlines an alternative to the biggest in the business.</p><p>Private aviation is another focus, with manufacturers like Dassault Aviation and Bombardier showing off their new flagship business aircraft. Private charter firms, including Comlux and VistaJet, will also make the case for why their high-end aircraft are worth thousands of dollars an hour to charter.</p><p>And of course, the military, space, and defense industrial complexes will be present, with the US, Indian, French, Japanese, and UAE militaries bringing what amounts to a small air force in a display of military might. That's all in addition to the startups filling the convention hall that promise to revolutionize the aviation industry.</p><p>Insider is on the ground at the Dubai Airshow. Boeing's latest and most controversial aircraft on display</h2><div type="image" title="Boeing 777X" height="3461" width="4614" msid="87697965" hostid="261"></div><p>The Boeing 777X is making its first-ever international debut and will be welcoming select attendees onboard for a sneak peek at what's to come from the landmark aircraft. Insider is those invited onboard for a first look.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-777x-twin-engine-plane-flew-for-the-first-time-2020-1">ultra-modern variant of the popular Boeing 777 family of aircraft promises increased efficiency and additional seating capacity</a> to its previous generation sibling. And in addition to the 777X being the largest twin-engine plane slated to fly passengers, the two <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/worlds-largest-plane-engine-ge9x-to-power-boeing-777x-2020-9">GE Aviation GE9X engines will be the largest commercial aircraft engines in the world</a>.</p><p>Boeing will also perform a flying display with the aircraft to demonstrate its capabilities to a crowd that's been following the aircraft's journey, through its delays and all, since its first flight in early 2020.</p><p>The 777X's presence in Dubai is likely an homage to Emirates as the launch customer and soon-to-be largest operator of the aircraft. More than 100 777X will fill the Emirates fleet in the next few decades, based on its current order.</p><p>Boeing would also be hoping to land additional orders for the aircraft that's already garnered interest from the world's leading carriers. But orders for the smaller 777-8 will be key as most existing orders are focused on the larger 777-9.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/boeing-737-max">Boeing 737 Max</a> is set to be a prominent feature at the Dubai Airshow with two static aircraft on display. Boeing, in partnership with Alaska Airlines, is displaying the 737 Max 9 EcoDemonstrator aircraft that is being used to test new technology aimed at reducing the aviation industry's carbon footprint.</p><p>Alternatively, the UAE's own FlyDubai is set to have its 737 Max on display as the region's largest operator of the model. The budget carrier recently unveiled a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CVr9Jx6vf5e/">new business class cabin for the aircraft</a> including lie-flat seats, pushing the bounds of comfort on a narrow-body aircraft in a way most 737 Max operators have been unwilling to do.</p><p>The Max displays come less than a year since the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-737-max-fly-again-news-update-recertification-faa-production-2020-11">Federal Aviation Administration ungrounded the aircraft</a> following <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/737-max-fly-again-crash-boeing-revisions-faa-2020-12">two deadly crashes that resulted in the loss of 346 lives</a>, attributable to a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/outrageous-messages-from-boeing-employees-2020-1">Boeing software issue</a>.</p><p>Boeing's newest military aerial refueler, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-expects-kc-46-tanker-this-year-defects-remain-2018-1">KC-46 Pegasus</a>, will also be on display as part of the US Air Force delegation. Most notably, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gulfstream-debuts-75-million-g700-private-jet-tour-photos-2021-9">the Gulfstream G700 that made the rounds over the summer on a global tour</a> will not be making the trek to Dubai.</p><p>But even with three new aircraft in the pipeline, Gulfstream is ceding Dubai to its French, Canadian, and Brazilian rivals.  </p><p>Boeing is bringing one of its 737 airliner-turned-private-jets, known as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-business-jet-747-8i-private-photos-interior-2020-3">Boeing Business Jets</a>, to Dubai, but it won't be on display at the airshow. Rather, select attendees, including Insider, will be shuttled to Dubai International Airport for tours.</p><p>Airbus, for its part, will <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-acropolis-aviations-new-110-million-acj320neo-private-jet-2020-3">show off an Airbus Corporate Jet 320neo</a>, the private jet variant of the A320neo airliner. <br />These flying penthouse apartments are intended for a particularly wealthy type of traveler than can afford the ultra-high expense of purchasing and maintaining an airline for private use.</p><p>Embraer is showing off its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/embraers-newest-praetor-600-private-jet-enters-service-with-flexjet-2020-12">Praetor 600 super-midsize aircraft that's becoming popular with major private jet firms including Flexjet</a>.</p><p>Aircraft completion specialist Citadel Completions will also bring a rare private jet to the skies, another airliner-turned-private jet based on the Airbus A340-500 airliner. The four-engine private offers a nearly unbeatable combination of living space and range, with the A340-500 a former favorite of airlines to fly ultra-long-haul routes.</p><p>Other private aircraft manufacturers in attendance include Pilatus, Irkut Corporation, Textron Aviation, and Tecnam.</p><h2>4. A Brazilian and European rivalry on full display</h2><div type="image" title="An Embraer E195-E2 aircraft - Embraer E195-E2" height="1666" width="2223" msid="87697968" hostid="261"></div><p>Airbus and Embraer will both bring their next-generation aircraft that are fighting for control in the 100-150-seat market.</p><p>Embraer is bringing its Embraer E195-E2 demonstration aircraft, featuring a special paint livery with a tiger on the nose and called the "Profit Hunter." <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porter-airlines-breathes-life-into-embraer-e195-e2-program-2021-7">Sales have been poor when compared to Airbus</a> despite Embraer touting better operating economics over its Airbus competitor.</p><p>Airbus and Air Baltic will be showing off the Airbus A220, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/history-of-the-airbus-a220-bombardier-cseries-plane-2020-2">formerly known as the Bombardier CSeries</a>. Airlines around the world have fallen for the A220 while Embraer has struggled to keep up commercially. It's been losing long-time customers, including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flying-on-jetblue-airways-brand-new-airbus-a220-photos-review-2021-6">JetBlue Airways</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-canada-unveils-controversial-new-airbus-a220-aircraft-2020-1">Air Canada</a> to the Airbus jet.</p><h2>5. Russia's answer to the Boeing 737 Max and Airbus A320 family of aircraft</h2><div type="image" title="Irkut Corporation MC-21" height="2000" width="2666" msid="87697969" hostid="261"></div><p>Russia's Irkut Corporation is nearing the finish line on a new jet to compete against Boeing and Airbus' 150-to-200-seat aircraft market. The MC-21 is made with composite materials and powered by turbofan engines. </p><p>It's unlikely that a Western airline will place an order but the jet could show promise in Europe and Asia. </p><h2>6. Israel comes to town</h2><div type="image" title="Israel Aerospace Industries Boeing 777-300ER &quot;Big Twin&quot; cargo plane" height="1421" width="1895" msid="87697972" hostid="261"></div><p>Israel is set to have a major presence at the Dubai Airshow for the first time in the event's history. The recent easing of tensions between Israel and the UAE under the Abraham Accords paved the way for Israel's attendance.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-passenger-airliners-are-converted-into-freighter-planes-2021-2">Israel Aerospace Industries</a> is one Israeli company that will make its first-ever journey to the Dubai Airshow, highlighting its experience in defense systems, passenger-to-cargo aircraft conversations, and maintenance and repair operations.</p><h2>7. Never-before-seen aircraft</h2><div type="image" title="Ethiad Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner" height="1198" width="1598" msid="87697973" hostid="261"></div><p>Etihad Airways is bringing the Airbus A350-1000 XWB to Dubai in a first-ever public display. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Sydney (AFP) - Virgin on Friday took full control of budget carrier Tigerair Australia, buying the remaining 40 percent it did not already own for Aus$1 (88 US cents) from its Singapore-listed parent.</p>
<p>The deal was revealed as it was announced that Singapore Airlines (SIA) would take majority control of Tiger Airways -- of which Tigerair Australia was a subsidiary -- as part of a turnaround plan for the loss-making budget firm.</p>
<p>Virgin Australia purchased a 60 percent stake in Tigerair in mid-2013 for Aus$35 million and said agreement had been reached to buy the rest of the carrier, which has struggled to reach profitability, for the tiny sum.</p>
<p>Tiger will continue to license its brand to Virgin.</p>
<p>Virgin Australia chief John Borghetti said the acquisition would allow it to fly to a number of new short-haul international destinations, providing growth opportunities for the business, while accelerating Tigerair's drive for profitability.</p>
<p>"Given the ongoing subdued consumer demand in the Australian domestic market, the growth of the Tigerair Australia domestic fleet is likely to be reduced," he said. </p>
<p>"Under this proposed transaction, we will benefit from the economies of scale and achieve profitability ahead of schedule by the end of 2016, by leveraging the resources of the wider Virgin Australia Group."</p>
<p>In Singapore, Tiger Airways said SIA would convert its "perpetual convertible capital securities holdings" in the carrier into shares, raising its stake to 55 percent from 40 percent.</p>
<p>It said the move would effectively make Tiger Airways a subsidiary of SIA, which also operates a long-haul budget unit called Scoot.</p>
<p>Tiger Airways also said it will separately raise Sg$234 million (US$184 million) in a rights issue that will be mostly subscribed by SIA. The rights issue will be carried out after SIA increases its stake.</p>
<p>Tiger has been struggling to make money owing to tough competition in the booming Southeast Asian budget carrier market, which is dominated by Malaysia's AirAsia and Singapore-based Jetstar Asia.</p>
<p>Earlier this year, it sold its entire 40 percent stake in Tigerair Philippines to rival Cebu Pacific, and in July, its joint venture in Indonesia's PT Mandala Airlines ceased operations owing to losses.</p>
<p>The Tigerair Australia move, which is subject to Foreign Investment Review Board approval, comes after a difficult 12 months for Australian airlines as intense battle for market share saw both Virgin and Qantas suffer heavy losses.</p>
<p>Virgin posted a full-year net loss of Aus$355 million, while Qantas suffered a record loss of Aus$2.8 billion. </p>

Newly wed brides are given enough jewellery to break their necks. Peasants store their pitiful savings in trinkets. Wise-guys sport rings like knuckle-dusters and tycoons with broken balance-sheets offer gold at temples in return for redemption. Even as economists and officials beg them not to, Indians splurge on the shiny stuff-in 2011 India imported more gold than any other country-about 1,000 tonnes, or a fifth of global annual supply. That is the same amount that sits in the central bank vaults of Switzerland. Why do Indians love gold?</p>
<p>Although tradition explains part of gold's allure, such vast purchases are a modern phenomenon. India consumed only 65 tonnes in 1982. Until 1990 imports were all but banned. Bullion had to be smuggled in and its price within India was about 50% higher than outside it. The typical buyer was a poor farmer in south India, for whom gold was an ancient currency and collateral to borrow against in bad times. But deregulation has seen an explosion in gold purchases. Today bullion is bought by rich people, serious investors and speculators. Once crooks imported gold and pawn brokers made loans against it. Now most gold coming into India enters legally through banks. Many loans made against gold collateral are not from shifty money lenders but registered financial firms.</p>
<p>Gold buyers are being rational, in their own way. First, they think the formal financial system is stacked against them. Only a third of Indians have bank accounts. Real returns stink: consumer price inflation is higher than benchmark interest rates and government bond yields. The financial system is geared towards helping the profligate government borrow cheaply at the expense of savers. While foreigners buy lots of Indian shares, locals have been sellers for some time. Faced with few alternatives, gold doesn't look so bad, especially given that its price rose every year between 2002 and 2011. The second reason why gold is popular is that it allows you to bypass a lot of India's legendary red tape. Opening a bank account in India is bureaucratic hell. Gold, on the other hand, is widely accepted without any documentation. It is also a fine way to store wealth without paying tax-along with property, it is the asset class that the authorities struggle to track. Some reckon that the huge boom in gold has closely tracked the boom in political corruption over the past decade.</p>
<p>At the individual level, then, the gold craze makes sense. But in aggregate it is a disaster for India. Imports of bullion impose a massive strain on its balance of payments-amounting to $54 billion in the year to March 2013. India's current-account deficit reached an alarming 4.8% of GDP that year, and just over half of the gap was due to gold. Gold also diverts savings out of the formal financial system, where they can be harnessed for investment. Thus while India's overall savings rate is high and on par with those of Asia's "tiger" economies, half of those savings are now diverted into physical assets. The ratio has been getting worse, as if India is moving back in time. The solution is to make sure that more people have access to the formal financial system. Raising interest rates to encourage savers would help, too. Both reforms will take time, however. In the short term, following a currency wobble over the summer, the government has resorted to a more primitive response, hiking taxes and imposing quotas on gold imports. For now this seems to have worked, with only $1-2 billion of gold being imported in October. But in time it may encourage smuggling. The gold price in India is now 10% above international levels, which suggests a premium for smuggling is being built in. And bootleggers are experimenting with new ways to beat the system: on November 19th 24 gold bars, worth more than $1m, were found stashed in the toilet cubicle of a Jet Airways flight to Kolkata.</p>

Why Do Indians Love Gold?

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>America's airline workers and CEOs are mad as hell. <br><br>They face increasing competition from a group of foreign rivals which - they say - are government supported, profiting off cheap labor, and abusing international agreements.<br><br>One the surface, it seems like a perfect opportunity for President Donald Trump to champion American workers and threaten to tear up another trade agreement.<br><br>But, so far, he's not biting, and there's two reasons why. <br><br>His job-creation focus is manufacturing, not the services industry, and the airlines that are triggering the complaints hail from a part of the world where Trump has growing business ties. </br></br></br></br></br></br></br></br></p><h2>What's the issue?</h2><p>The shorthand version of the feud is as follows: Since //2015// <span><span>American, Delta, and United Airlines (the US3) have been complaining about competition from three huge and fast growing Middle East-based rivals, Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways (the ME3). <br /></span></span></p><p>According to the US3, the ME3's growth has been fueled by as much as $50 billion in subsidies over the past decade - allowing them to flood the international market and threaten the job security of US aviation workers. They also say the ME3 are in violation of the OpenSkies agreements that govern international air travel between the US and 120 nations including the UAE and Qatar.</p><p><span>They're trying hard to get Trump's attention. Last Sunday</span>, a group of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/united-airlines-emirates-newark-athens-2017-3" target="_blank">United Airlines employees, unions, and members of Congress held a protest</a> at Newark Liberty International Airport in reaction to the launch of a new daily service by Emirates from Newark to Athens, Greece - a route that United flies during the summer. At the same time, a <a href="http://www.openandfairskies.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/03.06.17_NJNY-Open-Skies-Letter-Sires.pdf" target="_blank">bipartisan group of 25 members of Congress </a>from the New York and New Jersey wrote the White House asking Trump to block the Newark-Athens flight</p><p><span>"It's crystal clear that the U.S airlines and their employees are looking to President Trump to enforce our international agreements with the trade cheaters of the UAE and Qatar," Jill Zuckman a spokeswoman for the lobbying group representing the US3 on this matter said.<br><br>The ME3, as you might expect, refute all this. They note that US airlines have been bailed out and supported by government spending in the past, and that their own flights into the US are job and growth creators.<br /></br></br></span></p><h2>Manufacturing First<span><br> <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></br></span></h2><p>From his early days on the campaign trail, Trump keyed in on the need for America to rebuild its once booming manufacturing sector. Time and time again, candidate Trump and then President Trump vowed to support American made products.</p><p>In fact, the President has personally taken time to praise companies such as Ford, General Motors, United Technologies, and Intel for their decision to maintain manufacturing operations in the US.<br><br>That extends to Boeing. </br></br></p><p>In February, when asked about US airlines' request to block the entrance of Norwegian Air's Irish subsidiary into the domestic market, <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2017/02/07/press-briefing-press-secretary-sean-spicer-272017-9" target="_blank">White House press secretary Sean Spicer replied</a>:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"They're flying Boeing planes. There is a huge economic interest that America has in that deal right now. I don't want to get ahead of the President on that.  But just to be clear, I mean, when you're talking about U.S. jobs, both in terms of the people who are serving those planes and the person who's building those planes. That's a very big difference."</p><p>The difference here is Boeing and its assembly plants in Washington State and South Carolina that produced the 120 737 and 787 jets in Norwegian's Boeing-only fleet. These are the same plants that will build the 100 next generation 737 MAX airliners Norwegian has on order with a list value of more than $11 billion.</p><p>After all, there are few visuals quite as representative of American industrial might than a shiny new Boeing jet.</p><h2>The ME3 are big spenders</h2><p>But Norwegian is small potatoes when compared to the economic might and sheer spending power of the ME3.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Take Emirates for instance. The airline is one of Boeing's most important and reliable customers. Emirates' fleet of 160 Boeing 777s is the largest of its kind in the world and worth $45 billion. <br><br>To put things into perspective, if a 737 is the aeronautical equivalent of a $25,000 family sedan, then a 777 is a $100,000 Cadillac Escalade. And Emirates has been buying these "Cadillacs" in bulk with orders for another $86 billion worth of Boeing 777 and next generation 777X airliners.</br></br></p><p>It's not just Emirates. Collectively, the ME3 account for nearly 80% of the 306 777X aircraft Boeing has sold.</p><p>Then there are the engines, which Boeing does not make.<br><br>For Emirates, a larger number of its 777s are powered by General Electric GE90 engines. In 2015, Emirates signed a $16 billion deal with GE to provide maintenance for these engines. Even many of the the non-American aircraft Emirates, Etihad and Qatar fly are powered by American-made engines, built by a Connecticut-based joint venture between GE and Pratt &amp; Whitney called Engine Alliance. <br><br>Put it all together and the three airlines hold more than $150 billion worth of economic power that will keep Boeing's assembly lines rolling for the next decade and beyond. </br></br></br></br></p><p>In spite of the vastness and importance of the airline industry, the Trump administration's focus on manufacturing and that shining image of US industrial supremacy takes precedence. After all, why antagonize some of the most lucrative customers for America's most recognizable industrial export.</p><h2>Trump Dubai</h2><p>It's also worth raising the issue of the The Trump Organization's business interests in the United Arab Emirates. These business dealings have been the subject of great criticism from the President's detractors.</p><p>In February, the President's two sons - Eric and Donald Jr. - presided over the opening of the latest Trump-branded golf course, The Trump International Golf Club Dubai. The course, located a stone's throw away from downtown Dubai, was developed by Trump family friend, billionaire Hussain Sajwani and his Dubai-based DAMAC Properties. According to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-dubai-golf-idUSKBN15X0OU" target="_blank">Reuters</a>, DAMAC pays the Trump Organisation a licensing fee to use the Trump brand on the facility which features a 30,000 sq. ft. clubhouse, four restaurants, state-of-the-art recreation facilities, and a 7,300 yard, Par 71 golf course designed by Gil Hanse.</p><p>DAMAC is also developing a second Trump branded golf course in the emirate called the Trump World Golf Club Dubai. The second facility will feature an 18-hold championship course designed by Tiger Woods. During 2015 and 2016, DAMAC paid the Trump Organization as much as $10 million, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2017-02-18/first-sons-donald-jr-eric-anoint-plush-trump-dubai-golf-resort" target="_blank">Bloomberg</a> reported. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The the tiny Emirate of Dubai has blossomed over the past couple of decades under the guidance of its ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, and revolves around its government ruled by the House of al Maktoum. <br><br>That includes infrastructure, land, and the blessing for real-estate development - all as part of the ruling family's efforts to brand Dubai as an global hub for trade and commerce - and a the heart of this this international marketing effort is the Dubai's most recognizable and effective branding tool - Emirates and its shining fleet of jumbo jets. <br><br>It's not just Dubai either. Neighboring Abu Dhabi where Etihad is based, and Qatar to the north are doing much of the same - including building hotels and golf courses that might carry the Trump name. <a href="http://www.hoteliermiddleeast.com/23702-exclusive-trump-eyes-uae-ksa-and-qatar-hotels/">According to </a><span><a href="http://www.hoteliermiddleeast.com/23702-exclusive-trump-eyes-uae-ksa-and-qatar-hotels/">Hotelier Middle East</a>, in 2015 Ivanka Trump said the organization is looking at "multiple opportunities" in Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Saudi Arabia."</span></br></br></br></br></p><p>On a practical level, Emirates is also the how the world's golfers will find their way to Trump's Dubai properties.
