<ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="994680" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Falklands-War">Falklands War</keyword> in 1982 was the last major conflict to involve land, sea, and air battles.</li><li>To help counter <keyword id="5927" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Argentina">Argentina</keyword>, the British turned to their most well-known special-operations unit: the SAS.</li><li>Despite their skills, the SAS troops weren't able to achieve their objective in one of the most remote corners of the world.</li></ul>In April 1982, a British armada, including two aircraft carriers, sailed south <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-learns-lessons-about-seizing-taiwan-from-the-falklands-war-2021-4" target="_top">to retake the Falkland Islands</a> from Argentina. In response, the Argentine Air Force launched a fierce campaign to stop them.The deadly combination of the Super Etendard aircraft and the Exocet anti-ship missile made Argentine pilots extremely dangerous. If they managed to sink either of the two British aircraft carriers, the British fleet would lose its air superiority and would have to retreat.The British knew there were five Exocet missiles stored at Argentina's Rio Grande air base, 400 miles west of the Falklands in <keyword id="1796476" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tierra-Del-Fuego">Tierra del Fuego</keyword>, Argentina's southernmost province and one of the world's most remote regions.British commanders turned to their special-operations forces and the Special Air Service (SAS) to deal with the threat.<h2>Operation Mikado: A daring raid</h2><div type="image" title="British troops soldiers Argentina Falklands War prisoners" height="1325" width="2000" msid="84377288" hostid="261"></div>Argentine forces <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-learns-lessons-about-seizing-taiwan-from-the-falklands-war-2021-4" target="_top">using a</a><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-learns-lessons-about-seizing-taiwan-from-the-falklands-war-2021-4" target="_top">ir-launched </a><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-learns-lessons-about-seizing-taiwan-from-the-falklands-war-2021-4" target="_top">Exocet missiles</a> were able to sink several British ships as the fleet made its way south, which drove calls for action in London.The SAS commander, Col. Peter de la Billière - who later became a general and was t<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/delta-force-sas-hunted-iraqi-scud-missiles-during-gulf-war-2021-2" target="_top">he deputy commander of all coalition forces</a> during the Gulf War - pressed for a commando raid to take out the Argentine aircraft.The SAS had recently conducted <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/operation-nimrod-iranian-embassay-raid-raised-sas-profile-2021-5" target="_top">a superb hostage rescue </a><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/operation-nimrod-iranian-embassay-raid-raised-sas-profile-2021-5" target="_top">at the Iranian Embassy</a> in London, which was filmed on live television, and were cashing in their political clout.The SAS proposed Operation Mikado: a dashing raid on Rio Grande. Roughly 70 SAS operators from the unit's B Squadron would land at the base in two specially configured C-130 transport aircraft, deploy on motorcycles and gun trucks, and then storm the base's buildings and aircraft hangars.After they had destroyed the Super Etendard aircraft, Exocet missiles, and any other targets of opportunity, they would, if possible, fly away in the C-130s or escape to neighboring <keyword id="27157" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chile">Chile</keyword>, which was still on friendly terms with the British.There were several issues with the plan.Although the addition of internal fuel tanks meant the C-130s could reach the air base, it was highly unlikely that they would avoid detection by Argentine radar. The British pilots also hadn't had enough training with night-vision devices, making formation and low-altitude flying extremely dangerous.<div type="image" title="British Royal Navy HMS Sheffield Falklands War" height="1358" width="2000" msid="84377289" hostid="261"></div>The SAS operators also had some pretty restrictive rules of engagement. They couldn't kill or wound the Argentine pilots, unless they were attacked, thus eliminating probably the most effective way of neutralizing the Exocet threat.Nor were the British commandos prepared for the harsh environment in which they would have to operate."The South Atlantic winter was a big surprise for us. Thus far, we had been operating primarily in jungles and deserts," a retired SAS officer who served in the Falklands told Insider."We had some Arctic warfare training - the SBS had more, going back to their Royal Marine roots - but not to the point of us being comfortable in the environment. In the initial days, we suffered a lot, but eventually we received more protective gear, including Gore-Tex clothing" provided by the US Army's Delta Force, the retired officer added.There were also doubts among the SAS troops about the viability of the operation. The commanding officer and sergeant major of B Squadron thought the plan too rash and were fired because of it.By mid-May, the British still didn't have sufficient intelligence for a raid, so SAS leaders devised a strategic reconnaissance operation deep inside Argentina. Codenamed Operation Plum Duff, this mission would pave the way for the raid.<h2>Operation Plum Duff: A mission gone wrong</h2><div type="image" title="British commands on HMS Hermes during Falklands War" height="1332" width="2000" msid="84377291" hostid="261"></div>An eight-man team from B Squadron's 6 Troop was chosen to infiltrate Argentina and reconnoiter the airfield.They flew from SAS headquarters at Hereford in the UK to Ascension Island, a small island in the middle of the South Atlantic, and then parachuted near a Royal Navy aircraft carrier in South Atlantic.After a quick rest and final brief, the SAS troopers boarded a specially configured Sea King helicopter, which would fly them to mainland Argentina on a very low-altitude, nap-of-the-earth route.However, heavy fog forced the chopper to ascend once close to Argentina's coast, allowing an Argentine destroyer to pick it up with its radar. Unbeknownst to the SAS team, they had already been compromised.As they neared land, the SAS captain got into an argument with the Sea King pilot, insisting the team be inserted in the alternative infiltration point, which was farther from the airbase.<div type="image" title="British SAS helicopter crew that crashed in Chile during Falklands War" height="1308" width="2000" msid="84377294" hostid="261"></div>Once on the ground, the SAS operators began a grueling march toward the airbase. The commandos, each carrying about 120 pounds of gear, had to hide during daytime and walk at night because of the need to maintain secrecy.As they marched, Patagonia's rough terrain took a toll on the commandos. They were further slowed by a commando who got violently sick. It soon became clear to the freezing SAS troopers that they wouldn't reach their target before their rations ran out.The SAS captain contacted headquarters and was ordered to abort and escape to Chile and meet with an SAS liaison there. But upon reaching the Chilean border, the patrol couldn't find their liaison. They had to improvise, seeking shelter and donning civilian clothes.Finally, they made contact and, after some deliberations, were exfiltrated back to the UK.The SAS troops involved faced "a horrible situation," the SAS officer in charge of the operation <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00QVZPRBK/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_hsch_vapi_taft_p1_i0" target="_top">said afterward</a>.<div type="image" title="Argentine graves in Falkland Islands" height="1309" width="2000" msid="84377296" hostid="261"></div>"There was such a huge weight of expectation for the mission to be successful, to be balanced against walking out of the helicopter into what may well have been an already compromised situation and perhaps even into an enemy position," the officer said.Operation Plum Duff faced internal backlash, as its legality under the laws of armed conflict was dubious. Since the UK and Argentina hadn't officially declared war on each other, any British troops caught in Argentina weren't covered by the Geneva Conventions and could be tried for espionage and executed.Mikado was eventually canceled because the Argentines fired all the Exocets stored at Rio Grande at the British fleet - with great effect, sinking a destroyer and a merchant marine ship - and because of sketchy intelligence about the base.The British recaptured the Falklands when the remaining Argentines there surrendered on June 14, 1982. The 10-week conflict was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-learns-lessons-about-seizing-taiwan-from-the-falklands-war-2021-4" target="_top">the last to involve large air, land, and naval battles</a>, and it was a bloody campaign: Nearly 1,000 British troops were killed or wounded, and Argentina suffered more than 2,200 casualties.Stavros Atlamazoglou is a defense journalist specializing in special operations, a Hellenic Army veteran (national service with the 575th Marine Battalion and Army HQ), and a Johns Hopkins University graduate.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Project Astra is an experimental effort to reimagine what AI agents can be in the future.</li><li>I got to test out the new AI technology at Google's I/O conference. </li></ul><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-future-ai-agents-project-astra-2024-5">Project Astra</a> was the coolest new technology <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-killer-ai-app-consumers-2024-5">Google</a> showed off at its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-io-2024-live-updates-ai-search-android-announcements-2024-5">I/O</a> conference on Tuesday.After the keynote, journalists were herded over to a demo area for Project Astra. It's an experimental effort to reimagine what AI agents can be in the future. "We've always wanted to build a universal agent that will be useful in everyday life," Google DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis said.Once at the test location, Google let four journalists at a time into little demo booths. Before we went in, while waiting in line, two members of the Project Astra team from DeepMind walked us through how to use the technology. They described four modes for us to try out: Storyteller, Pictionary, Free-Form and Alliteration.<h2 id="da8137ba-91b0-4c66-98c8-afa864214416">Free-Form mode</h2>We tried Free-Form mode. Max Cherney, a journalist from Reuters, held up a Google-provided Android phone and pointed the camera at me. "Describe his clothes," Max said. Google's Gemini model reviewed the phone's live video and said I was wearing casual clothes. An accurate, solid answer. I started dancing and Max asked, "what is he doing now?" Gemini responded incorrectly, kind of. It said I had put on sunglasses. Which was true, because I'd put on some sunnies to dance. But it didn't spot the dancing. Admittedly, I was dancing badly, so maybe the AI model gets a pass on that. <h2 id="46b71491-fcb9-46c7-88a9-863d36161877">No stock quotes</h2>Then Max asked Gemini to critique my attire, because he wanted Gemini to do some analysis and share a point of view. The AI model said "I can't provide stock quotes right now." We all stopped as the AI magic had abruptly ended. <h2 id="50804134-5575-4c26-8b42-8b85028b0e7d">A car and a story</h2>I then moved to a large touch screen that offered the four modes to try. I chose Pictionary. I drew a really bad car, and Gemini said "that looks like a car."I asked it to put the vehicle in an interesting story. "The sleek, blue car sped down the highway, a lonely traveler on a moonlit night," Gemini said. I had the car drive into a marketplace and Gemini said doing that would be unsafe in reality, but it could make a good story plot twist. "Is that it?" Gemini asked. I drew a table of fruit at the market. It was even worse than the car. Then I said someone should steal fruit in the story. "Ah, a fruit thief adds an interesting twist! Are they getting away with it so far?" Gemini said. At this point, the demo ended and we were ushered out of the booth.<h2 id="3597ac07-eb91-4f5d-9240-1200c41614fd">Gregory Wayne and Captain Cook</h2>Just outside, I ran into Gregory Wayne, the head of Project Astra. He's been at DeepMind for about a decade and we discussed the origins on Project Astra. He said he's been fascinated by how humans communicate using language. Not just written and spoken words, but all the other forms of communication that make human interaction so rich and satisfying. He recounted a story about when Captain Cook arrived in Tierra del Fuego and met the inhabitants. They did not speak the same language, so they communicated through actions, such as picking up sticks and throwing them to the side, which signified that Cook and his crew were welcome. Wayne and his colleagues were fascinated by the story because it showed all the other ways that humans can communicate with each other beyond what people are taught to do through written words and speaking aloud. <h2 id="13e3fbd3-bbdc-41db-93b5-21faf55068b6">Beyond chatbots</h2>This is part of what inspired Project Astra, Wayne said. It's all about going beyond what chatbots do right now, which is mostly understanding written and spoken words and conducting simple back-and-forth conversations, where the computer says something, then the human does, then the computer again and so on. One of the main goals of Project Astra is to get AI models to comprehend many of the other things going on around text and speech-based communication. That might be hand signals, or the context of what's going on in the world at the moment of the conversation. In the future, this could include something like an AI model or agent spotting something in the background of a video feed and alerting the human in the conversation. That might be a bicycle approaching, or telling the user when a traffic light changes color. The options are endless, and also include an AI model understanding, through kind of reading the room, that it should stop talking and let the human say something. <h2 id="63c7da93-ec42-4244-b86b-cafd729b18e6">SuperEvilMegaCorp</h2>I told Wayne about the slightly disappointing moment when Gemini didn't critique my clothes and instead said it couldn't provide stock quotes right now. He immediately looked at my T-shirt, which has a real startup logo on it that reads "SuperEvilMegaCorp." Wayne theorized that Gemini saw the corporation name and guessed that we wanted to know financial information about this company. SuperEvilMegaCorp is a gaming startup in Silicon Valley that is not publicly traded, so there's no real-time stock information to be had. Gemini didn't know that. Maybe it's learning this right now, though.

The album is called "Sounds of the Unborn" and will be released on April 2 by Sacred Bones Records. Yupanqui's parents, Elizabeth Hart and Iván Diaz Mathé, are musicians and captured the sounds themselves.<a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2021/02/06/us/toddler-recorded-album-before-birth-trnd/index.html#:~:text=Fifteen%2Dmonths%2Dold%20Luca%20Yupanqui,Math%C3%A9%2C%20using%20biosonic%20MIDI%20technology.">In an interview with CNN</a>, Hart spoke about the process of recording her then-unborn child in her womb."The electrodes receive electromagnetic impulses that are translated into MIDI and then hooked up to synthesizers," Hart said.They recorded the sounds over five sessions, each of which lasted one hour. Hart told CNN that her husband had previously experimented with this technique in the past in an attempt to record music from plants."The concept of music coming from a different source was what motivated this new experimentation," Hart said.Sacred Bones described the music as "the expression of life in its cosmic state - pre-mind, pre-speculation, pre-influence, and pre-human" in <a href="https://www.sacredbonesrecords.com/collections/releases/products/sbr270-luca-yupanqui-sounds-of-the-unborn">a news release for the album.</a>Hart is a bassist for Psychic Ills, a psych-rock band. Her husband previously collaborated with Lee "Scratch" Perry, a record producer known for using innovative techniques to create new music. Hart and Diaze Mathé met in 2016 and soon formed the Tierra del Fuego band. They have created music together ever since, but this project was clearly unlike any other."The whole experience was very fulfilling. The rhythms and harmonies created with this technology are very different to the ones we would produce ourselves and being able to work with such material has been both challenging and very rewarding," Hart told CNN.Sacred Bones said that Yupanqui herself had "astounding awareness" of what was happening when she was present for the mixing session as a baby."She would open her eyes wide and stare at her parents, seemingly recognizing her own sounds from the womb, knowing that they were revisiting those rituals that made them come together as one," the label said in the release.Hart told CNN, however, that Yupunqui's music career may be short-lived: "She will choose her path in life and we will support her choices every step of the way."

It's not as if many schools are offering classes on filing taxes or managing a personal budget.It also doesn't help that the student loan debt crisis has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/americas-student-loan-debt-facts-2017-4">ballooned into a $1.3 trillion mess</a> and "borrowers now leave school owing on average about $34,000," <a href="http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/2017/04/04/5-Alarming-Facts-About-America-s-13-Trillion-Student-Loan-Debt">according to the Fiscal Times</a>.So, how can individual grads set themselves up for post-college financial success? First of all, it helps to reflect."Forget what you're supposed to want - a spouse, 2.5 kids, a Labrador retriever, that CEO job, a house in the Hamptons, and a Tesla," John Folley, a CFP and VP at online lending website <a href="https://www.sofi.com/">SoFi</a>, told Business Insider. "Nothing wrong with any of these, but what do you really want? Most importantly: write your goals down. If you have a short list of the things you want to do with your life, you'll have a good start at actually doing them. Some people write the obituary they hope they'll have. Yes, that's kind of creepy - but it's one way to envision your future."Here are some other crucial financial steps that 20-somethings should take in the first six months after graduation:<h2>1. Get a job</h2>Sure, it's great to travel when you're young, but be practical. Don't plan your dream trip at the expense of landing a job."Yes, we know, you want to go to Tierra del Fuego and there will 'never be a better time than this,'" Folley said. "It's okay to take a vacation, but you'll enjoy it more if you have a job waiting when you get back."So, focus on finding a job in the first six months after graduation. If you've got a bad case of wanderlust, negotiate a two to three week buffer before your first day - that'll give you enough time for an adventure before you dive into the workforce.If the organization refuses to give you that time off, "they might not be a firm you want to work for, or there is a long line of people who want this job, so you'd better grab it now and travel later," said Folley.<h2>2. Focus on benefits</h2>Salary and stock options are incredibly important, but don't forget about benefits when taking your first job out of college.Before you take on a new role, "be sure they offer health insurance and, ideally, disability," Folley said. "If you have dependents, life insurance is also important."While you're at it, make sure the company offers a match on part of your 401(K) contribution."This is free money, and it encourages you to save," Folley said. "If your employer matches any part of your 401(k) contributions, be sure to contribute enough to get the full match. Invest more if you can, but don't lose out on that free money."<h2>3. Track your spending</h2>If you don't pay attention to what you eat, you might set yourself up for some health issues down the line. If you don't pay attention to what you're spending money on, that disorganization can really take a toll on your finances."Make a budget, so you're keeping track of where your money goes," Folley said. "You don't need to get crazy with details - you can nerd out if you want - just be sure you are not spending more than you make."<h2>4. Step away from the credit cards</h2><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/most-effective-debt-repayment-harvard-2017-4">Credit card debt is endemic in the US</a>. Don't become dependent on your card, and rack up a ton of debt."It's really easy to screw up if you're new at this, and end up with a couple of thousand in credit card debt," Folley said. "Don't let it build up. Pay in full each month. If you can't, stop buying stuff until it's paid off."While you're at it, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-determines-your-credit-score-2015-1">keep on top of your credit score</a>."Late payments and missed payments are torpedoes that sink your credit [score]," Folley said. "Set up your payments in bill pay as soon as you get the bill, so you don't forget. This also helps you estimate how much you can spend each month."<h2>5. Start saving now</h2>"We get it that you have student loans, and you need to buy a bunch of stuff because you're just starting out in life," Folley said. "But it's important to form the saving habit now - it will get easier as you get raises."So how much should you be saving? Folley recommends growing an emergency fund to the point where you have three to six months of living expenses saved up."That won't happen overnight, but if you sock away even a few bucks each month in an FDIC insured savings account, you'll get there," Folley said. "Set up a transfer to savings from your checking account every payday.
