Small businesses generated 35 million job applications till Aug 2024, 14 million were from women: Report

More than 40 per cent of <keyword id="20081234" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumers" source="keywords">consumers</keyword> in Tier 3 to 6 cities use <keyword id="19994585" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-payment" source="keywords">digital payment</keyword> on a daily basis, while 45 per cent claimed to use it once in two days, a new survey report has said. "This reflects the frequent usage of <keyword id="6358577" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-payments" source="Orion">digital payments</keyword> by consumers, even in Tier 3 to 6 locations of the country," said a report by Chase India on The State of Digital Payments in India. The report identifies the key challenges faced by <keyword id="20442209" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="merchants" source="keywords">merchants</keyword> and consumers in the adoption of digital payment services at the grassroots level. According to the report, nearly half of the merchants who are not using digital payments in rural India are unaware of the service. In contrast, a staggering 94 per cent of consumers who are not using digital payments are aware of it but still don't use it, as they face issues like lack of internet connectivity, limited knowledge, mistrust in online payments and service-related problems. The report added that around 74 per cent of consumers claimed to be using digital payment services for a transaction a family member made. The report said around 41 per cent of merchants claimed to receive less than 25 per cent of their sales through digital payments, around 15 per cent of merchants claimed to receive over 50 per cent of their sales through digital payments. "This shows the potential left to be tapped with respect to increasing the usage of digital payments at the grassroots level," the report said. A total of 2,240 respondents were surveyed for the report, including 1,184 consumers and 1,056 merchants, spread across 16 districts, covering eight states in different geographic zones of the country. The report also said that lack of awareness about digital payments was a crucial finding. Around 46 per cent of merchants had never used digital payments because they were unaware of it. The survey revealed that, on average, around 36 per cent of merchants claimed to be processing over 50 digital payment transactions every month. Also, around 23 per cent of merchants claimed to be processing not more than 1 digital payment transaction every alternate day. Most merchants process digital payment transactions of less than Rs 15,000 every month. Only a handful of merchants claimed to process digital payments of over Rs 1 lakh. The main challenges that hinder the adoption of digital payments were inadequate infrastructure, service-related issues, capacity constraints and lack of trust in digital Payments, it said. "KYC is a vital step in onboarding merchants for using digital payments services. However, the survey discovered that nearly one in three merchants faced difficulties in completing the KYC process due to a lack of requisite documents, capacity constraints and the time taken for onboarding, among other reasons," the report said. During 2022-2023, domestic firms experienced a 60 per cent surge in office space absorption compared to the pre-pandemic period of 2018-2019. Key occupier groups have secured significant spaces in prime locations across major cities, with <keyword id="19913115" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-ncr" source="keywords">Delhi-NCR</keyword> leading, followed by <keyword id="6354321" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bengaluru" source="Orion">Bengaluru</keyword> and Mumbai. Domestic firms to lease 60-65 million sq ft office space by 2025: CBRE report

Emissions from residential cooking and heating, power generation, and industries together contribute up to 60 per cent of India's PM2.5 pollution, with about 80 per cent of this coming from <keyword id="23824528" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fossil-fuel-combustion" source="keywords">fossil fuel combustion</keyword>, a new study has found. The peer-reviewed study, published in MDPI's "Air" journal, suggests dividing India into 15 airsheds based on regional climate and pollution sources. An airshed is a geographic area where <keyword id="53848" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="air-quality" source="Orion">air quality</keyword> is influenced by common factors such as wind patterns and pollution sources. Since pollution can spread across regions, the <keyword id="22077484" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="airshed-approach" source="keywords">airshed approach</keyword> promotes coordinated action among states. "Residential cooking and heating, power generation, and all other industries together are responsible for 40-60 per cent of the PM2.5 pollution in all the airsheds, and approximately 80 per cent of the pollution comes from fossil fuel burning sources," said Sarath Guttikunda, lead author of the study and founder of UrbanEmissions.info. The study said biomass burning, including post-harvest crop residue burning, contributed less than 3 per cent to annual PM2.5 levels while transport accounted for 5-10 per cent in all airsheds. PM2.5 are fine particles with a diameter of 2.5 micrometres or less, about the width of a human hair. These are so small that these can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, posing significant health risks. An analysis of PM2.5 trends from 1998 to 2020, along with state-level data on fuel consumption, energy demand and emissions, revealed that 11 of the 15 airsheds were critical for India's air quality management and required coordinated interventions. The Indo-Gangetic Plains remain the most polluted region, with significant emissions from residential cooking and heating (especially in winter), power plants, brick kilns (driven by construction demand), waste burning, dust and vehicular movement for passengers and freight. The plateau region between the Eastern and Western Ghats, India's second most populated area, has seen the highest rise in annual PM2.5 pollution during this period, the study said. "This is an indication of the growing urbanisation and demand for transport, industrial, and commercial amenities," it said. Coastal areas, vital to India's industrial economy, have also experienced rising pollution despite the moderating effects of land-sea breezes. This increase is attributed to growing shipping emissions and overall industrial growth in cities such as Mundra, Surat, Mumbai, Goa, Mangalore, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Haldia.

Study traces 60% PM2.5 pollution in India to residential cooking, power generation, industries

Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.

As e-commerce is more widely accepted, mass consumers will enter the system whose preferences are much different than the affluent consumers, says a report by <keyword id="20118142" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bofa-securities" source="keywords">BofA Securities</keyword>. “Mass consumers have specific preferences which are different from premium and affluent consumers. They focus on prices, deals and discounts vs delivery speed, payment options, friendly consumer policies etc. This consumer cohort follows an explore-based shopping journey vs affluent customer base doing need-based shopping,” said the <keyword id="19960097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bofa" source="keywords">BofA</keyword> report. The growth in the mass e-com consumers is also happening parallelly to the boom seen in tier 2 customers. India’s top e-tailer <keyword id="19911893" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="meesho" source="keywords">Meesho</keyword> says that tier 1 cities and tier 2 markets are seeing the same amount of volume growth. “For Meesho, in pockets, tier 3 markets are growing faster than tier 1 and tier 2. There is also a mix shift happening in rural and semi urban India,” said the BofA report. A recent report by CBRE too said that the purchasing power of tier 2 cities like Chandigarh, Jaipur, Goa, Mangalore, Kochi etc has been growing so much that offline retailers are making a beeline for them. As of 2021, 50% of online urban shoppers were from tier 2 and tier 3 cities. This number is projected to reach 60% by 2030. “These e-commerce dynamics point towards the presence of a high aspiration consumer base,” the report said. Regular buying not just one-time buys The e-commerce purchase habits are also evolving. Apart from one-time purchases like electronics, home and kitchen goods, consumers are also increasingly purchasing high-frequency categories like fashion,apparel, beauty and personal care products along with jewelry and accessories. As per a Redseer consumer report released late 2023, 50% of festive season shoppers were looking to make purchases in fashion. “More than around 25% of these consumers are planning to purchase other low average selling prices like beauty and personal care and home and living,” the report said. This is also bringing in a change in the pricing dynamics of e-tailing. The average order value (<keyword id="20237201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aov" source="keywords">AOV</keyword>) for Meesho’s customer cohort has dipped by 10% in the last one year to ₹300-310. “Only 2-3% of this change came because of downtrading and majority was led by Meesho’s ability to price a product lower and led by category mix shift,” said BofA.

We'd lived about four blocks from Lake Michigan, and during the pandemic, we'd walk to the beach every day after work.But in the suburbs, we had to drive everywhere. I tried to incorporate walking into my routine, but the suburbs just aren't built for that. Going to the grocery store or taking our dog to the park required us to drive.When we lived in the city, we'd see friends just about every weekend and could decide to hang out pretty spontaneously. In the suburbs, we had to make a concerted effort to be social, and it required a lot of planning.We'd expected that going back into the city every weekend would be a breeze, forgetting that traffic would mean the trip would take at least an hour each way and we'd need to find parking.In the city, there was a gay bar called The Sofo Tap that became our go-to place on Friday or Saturday nights. It catered to people like me — larger gay men and gay men of color. In the first suburb we lived in, there weren't really any bars within walking distance of us, and driving to a bar felt counterintuitive since I was going to the bar to drink. When we moved to another nearby suburb after two years, we lived within walking distance of bars, but as a Black gay man, I didn't feel comfortable being at those bars for long periods of time.<h2 id="6a952c7b-6e65-4688-8878-73529a8b921e">I realized how miserable I was in the suburbs</h2>I first noticed that something wasn't right when I stopped fitting into my clothes despite my diet not changing at all. My depression got worse, and I realized how much of my health and well-being had been tied to a city lifestyle.The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-to-usa-from-europe-regret-cars-bicycles-2023-12">car culture</a> in the suburbs really drove me over the edge; it got to the point where I stopped wanting to go out and do things. The weather and climate also had a huge impact on how I felt.Our last winter in Chicago, I couldn't get out of bed because of my depression. It was a struggle to eat, go to work, or have any kind of daily routine. If I woke up and saw it was sunny out, those were always the easiest days. On cloudy, rainy, snowy days, my depression got the best of me.I realized that I no longer wanted to live somewhere where the weather had such an effect on my mood. I'll always have depression and it's something I'll have to manage, but I wanted to live somewhere that made it more manageable.We'd been talking for years about maybe <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-tech-job-moved-la-freelancer-2022-12">moving to LA</a>, and whenever we visited, Braden could see that I was happier there. On one of our trips, he told me he could see himself living there. Our place is on the smaller side — it's about 700 square feet and we pay $2,540 for it — but the amenities and environment make it worth it.The culture here is very laid-back and not as fast-paced as Chicago. Instead of the typical 9-to-5 lifestyle, people here seem to have a different relationship with work, in a good way. Both of us are fascinated by the entertainment industry and hope to work as writers in it one day, so being adjacent to it has been great.<div type="image" title="Randall Galbreath wears a white baseball cap and sunglasses as he poses with the Hollywood sign in the background." height="1429" width="1170" msid="113167090" hostid="261" sizebytes="177634"></div>West Hollywood is also kind of the epicenter of queer culture here, so we've appreciated being able to find providers like doctors, therapists, and dentists within our community.LA has a car culture and isn't very walkable, but it has a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-for-visiting-los-angeles-without-car-using-public-transportation-2023-10">public transportation system</a> and some neighborhoods are walkable. We live about a 20-minute walk from my workplace, and we walk to the grocery store a couple of times a week.There are also a lot of walking destinations — places you can drive to and then walk around, like parks, reservoirs, and even outdoor malls. Just waking up and knowing that the sun is out helps me a lot with my mood. Even Chicago's best days in the summer don't really compare to the worst days in LA.<h2 id="0cd18fd5-bea5-4514-8958-74179aa02b23">Maybe we'll move back to Chicago, but never the suburbs</h2>We plan to be in LA for the foreseeable future. I could see us moving back to Chicago someday to be closer to our mothers, who both live in the Midwest, as they get older.
