The 1994 WB series, which also starred Jackée Harry and Tim Reid as their adoptive parents, ran for six seasons before going off the air in 1999.</p><p>"We are very hands-on with our audience and we know what they want. I feel like we have to make sure that ... is heard," she declared, adding that she has a vision for where her character is now in her life as an adult.</p><p>"I can speak for Tamera Campbell," Mowry-Housley continued of her character. "She is living her best life and doing it in a very unconventional way because that's who Tamera Campbell was - the way she dressed, the way she was boy crazy, the way she was in school. She walked to the beat of her own drum. "One of her questions was, 'How does it feel to get older and lose your beauty?' She actually said that to me."</p><p>MacDowell noted that the question made her feel sad, mostly for the reporter.</p><p>"All I could do was think: 'You're gonna be someday. The color of them looked a little different," she said. "I like the way my skin looked better. And there was a feeling. It empowered me more. At first, Godfrey was nervous when her daughter told her that her video was everywhere.</p><p>"I would read the comments and get emotional because I was like, "These people love me," she said. "Then I was just so confused because I'm like, "I was just eating a salad."</p><p>Shortly after the video went viral, the deli was swarming with customers who had traveled miles across the country to get of taste of what Godfrey experienced. She said she learned from the local news outlets that the store was bursting with business. </p><p>"I was there one time, and this lady and her daughter were coming from Pennsylvania to go back home to Chicago, and they were driving through Cleveland and was like, 'Hey, let's stop at the deli. 'And I got to meet them," she added. </p><p>The store's TikTok account, which regularly posts customers' reactions, shows people who trekked to the deli from as far as the United Kingdom. The owner of the store, Wael Herbawi, <a href="https://www.today.com/food/trends/chicken-salad-81st-deli-cleveland-viral-tiktok-rcna54854">told TODAY </a>in October that he now makes hundreds of chicken salads daily and had to hire more employees to help him accommodate the surge in customers.</p><p>"It was a win-win for both of us," Godfrey explained. I probably get about three to four hours of sleep a day."</p><h2><strong>'I want everyone to be blessed'</strong></h2><p>Recently, Godfrey, in <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@bdtrelilbrother/video/7171265286707023150?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;item_id=7171265286707023150&amp;lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an interview</a> with another popular Black TikTok creator, <a href="https://www.blackenterprise.com/voice-behind-its-a-chicken-salad-viral-video-tanisha-godfrey-says-google-lowballed-her/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">opened up</a> about how major companies, particularly Google, gave her low offers to buy her sound — leading her to hire a publicist. </p><div type="image" title="tk" height="1294" width="828" msid="96409088" hostid="261"></div><p>"I had a lot of big-name companies reach out to me, and they were just trying to play me," she said during the interview last month. "I'm still learning how to work TikTok...but I'm not dumb. When you say what you want to buy my sound and offer me $500, it's a fucking problem."</p><p>Black creators on TikTok have spoken out about their challenges<a href="https://www.insider.com/a-timeline-of-allegations-that-tiktok-censored-black-creators-2021-7"> on the platform</a>, including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-rich-list-pay-gap-white-and-black-creators-2020-9">their lack of access to brand deals</a> and how their counterparts get paid significantly more after repackaging their ideas.</p><p>The Cleveland native plans to continue to highlight small businesses on her page. For instance, after promoting her <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRqrfvn4/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hairstylist</a> on TikTok, she is now fully booked, Godfrey said. </p><p>"I want everyone to be blessed," she added. "It's a lot of money out here, and it's enough for everybody."</p><p>She continued, "I want my platform to represent positivity, fun, and love. My page is a safe space for me and for my supporters."</p>

Her voice helped her neighborhood deli's chicken salad go viral. Now, Tanisha Godfrey is promoting her own recipe for success after securing brand deals.

She's got 5 million Instagram followers, 5.6 million Facebook fans and another 2 million Twitter followers.</p><p>But she's far from a digital native. In fact she's a "TGIF" native.</p><p>Long before Mowry was a YouTube creator, she was a legitimate TV star, as she and her twin sister headlined the ABC sitcom "Sister Sister," which was part of the network's family-friendly "TGIF" programming block in the 1990s.</p><p>Now, the web video production/ad company Kin Community is making Mowry and others like her the centerpiece of a new strategy aimed at building media brands on social platforms with more professional talent.</p><p>In her case, Mowry never stopped working in the TV business, doing shows on Cooking Channel and the long running BET series "The Game."</p><p>But over the past few years she's really taken to social media. And Kin sees her as the kind of talent that won't send CEOs and chief marketing officers into a panic any time soon over what sort of content their ads are alongside.</p><p>Indeed, Mowry's apt to share with her fans favorite recipes and beauty tips, and it's hard to imagine her going on an off color rant or making some poorly thought out Hitler joke. She's also accustomed to showing up on time, collaborating with marketers, and taking feedback from management, all pluses compared to some more unpredictable digital creators.</p><h2>Reinventing and reexamining digital influencers</h2><p>Kin is one of a dozen or more companies that had looked to build businesses around native digital talent over the past several years. These so called <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-hollywood-is-buying-multi-channel-networks-2014-4">"multi channel networks"</a>&#xa0;(MCNs) looked to connect brands to a new generation of consumer by rolling up deals to represent tons of YouTube channels, before eventually branching off into other channels.</p><p>But over time, the economics of such businesses proved sub-optimal (as with any business built on another company's platform), and the talent unpredictable (see former <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pewdiepie-says-racist-slur-during-livestream-n-word-2017-9">Maker studios talent PewDiePie, who's been dinged for several insensitive jokes</a>).</p><p>At the same time, many A-list stars have proven to be less than skilled in digital media. <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/youtube-tv-channels-kutcher-poehler-254370">Shaquille O'Neal's one time YouTube channel comes to mind.</a></p><p>So Kin is trying to forge a middle ground. It's partnering with established yet a few-rungs-short-of-superstar talent who have shown an ability to churn out digital content that resonates, while building new brands.</p><p>For example, last fall Kin and&#xa0;Mowry colaunched "Tia Mowry's Quick Fix" on YouTube and Facebook. The episodic lifestyle show, which features everything from&#xa0;Mowry making chicken and waffles to styling kids' curly hair, has reeled in over 300,000 YouTube subscribers and over<a href="https://www.facebook.com/TiaMowrysQuickFix/"> 900,000 Facebook followers.</a>. And Kin says that episodes are drawing audiences consistently that rival similarly themed cable shows.</p><p>"The MCN world was a way to scale," Kin CEO Michael Wayne told Buiness Insider. "But it was more or less talent management. And you end up managing influencers who have a lot of other people working with them."</p><p>Kin isn't completely ditching working with digital native talent. But the focus going forward will be on owning its own channels and shows, and becoming a full on programmer, said Wayne</p><p>"In addition to Mowry's channel, Kin recent rolled out the beauty and fashion-focused <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCE1FRQFAcRXE5KVp721vo9A">"All Things Adrienne" </a>with former Disney Channel and Cheetah Girls performer <a href="https://www.instagram.com/adriennebailon/?hl=en">Adrienne Houghton</a>, and projects are in the works with "Dancing with the Stars" dancer Derek Hough and reality stars&#xa0;Nick and Vanessa Lachey.</p><p><strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">The plan is to create seven more owned and operated Kin brands by the end of the year. "We might even accelerate that," said Wayne.&#xa0;Kin sees numerous ways to weave advertisers and e-commerce into&#xa0; these</span></strong></p><p>The key will be to find mainstream talent that has fallen hard for social media. Mowry fits the bill</p><p>She said that as a kid, she remembers craving a connection with stars like Leonardo DiCaprio. "I was o<span style="font-weight: 400;">bsessed with Leo," she said. A media company built on YouTube influencers now sees TV talent as a much safer bet

But they better be careful on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/">Facebook Watch.</a></p><p>In fact, Facebook recently smacked down one of its Watch partners for trying to make an extra few bucks.&#xa0;</p><p>Specifically, the lifestyle web video company Kin was including e-commerce links to products below some of its Watch videos. These videos were editorial in nature - they weren't paid for by an advertiser. But people could click on the links and buy products featured in the clips. And Kin would see a cut if this were to happen.&#xa0;</p><p>While it's OK to include affiliate links with Facebook Watch videos, Facebook wants publishers to label said clips as branded content, which in this case, Kin wasn't doing. So Facebook told Kin it needed to give the video a specific label.</p><p>This was but a minor skirmish, and if Facebook Watch proves to be a killer new revenue source for <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword> companies, this sort of thing won't matter much. But that's no guarantee.</p><p>Meanwhile, commerce has supplied a reliable source of revenue to many digital publishers. And it's easy to see that model working well in Facebook Watch videos.</p><p>"Right now,&#xa0;<span>Facebook does not distinguish between affiliate and branded videos," said one publishing executive.&#xa0;</span></p><h2>Publishers are trying every which way to make money on Facebook</h2><p>As media companies invest more in original programming for Facebook's fledgling video hub, they are looking to make money any way they can. Some are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/publishers-say-facebooks-rollout-of-watch-ads-is-methodical-but-picking-up-speed-2018-8">hoping for Facebook's own video ad products to start kicking in cash in a meaningful way.</a>&#xa0;Others are producing video content <a href="https://digiday.com/media/coming-soon-to-facebook-watch-shows-paid-for-by-advertisers/">on behalf of brands.</a></p><p>Another option would seem to be <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-affiliate-marketing-report-how-mainstream-publishers-are-turning-performance-based-marketing-into-a-fine-art-2015-11">affiliate links</a>. This is <a href="https://digiday.com/media/bustle-plans-drive-3-5-million-commerce-year/">increasingly common among publishers on their own sites. </a>Companies ranging from <a href="https://digiday.com/media/leave-no-strategy-untested-buzzfeed-pushing-commerce-12-person-team/">BuzzFeed</a> to the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/29/public-editor/reviewing-toaster-ovens-and-selling-them-too.html">New York Times</a>&#xa0;to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/insiderpicks">Business Insider</a> often produce content that features consumer products (think a guide to the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-all-in-one-pc">cheapest PCs</a> or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-online-mattress-companies-startups-casper-helix-leesa-2016-7">most comfortable mattresses</a>).</p><p>Often publishers will include links to buy these featured products at the bottom of these articles or videos.</p><p>But there seems to be no easy way to do that on Facebook Watch.</p><h2>Publishers need to make it clear upfront when they are getting a cut from affiliate deals on Facebook Watch</h2><p>Take <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TiaMowrysQuickFix/">Tia Mowry's Quick Fix</a>, a lifestyle show produced by the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/a-media-company-built-on-youtube-influencers-now-sees-tv-talent-as-a-much-safer-bet-2018-5">web video firm Kin featuring the former "Sister Sister" star.</a></p><p>A recent video featured Mowry making a recipe using a <a href="https://mealthy.com/products/pressure-cooker?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIoZ_FrKDy3AIVyZ-zCh14GQMmEAAYASAAEgLdOvD_BwE">Mealthy Multipot</a>. The video was editorial - Mealthy didn't pay for it - but it did include a link below the video player where viewers could click and purchase the product with Kin getting a cut of each buy.</p><p>When Business Insider asked Facebook about this arrangement, the company quickly told Kin it needed to label the video as branded content, using the With Mealthy Recipes designation.</p><p>"Our Branded Content tag is intended to indicate whether a Page or Profile received any sort of compensation in exchange for featuring products in a post,"&#xa0;a spokesperson for Facebook said. "We do consider these videos to be branded content, so we reached out to the creators."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5b75bb0a8ea82fa1278b4ce2-1502/pressurec.jpeg" border="0" alt="pressurec" data-mce-source="Facebook" data-mce-caption="Facebook told Kin it needed to label this video as being paid for by a brand"><p class="source"><span>Facebook</span></p><p class="caption">Facebook told Kin it needed to label this video as being paid for by a brand</p></img></div><p></p></div></div><p>While branded content videos can perform just fine on Facebook, it's likely that some consumers would be less likely to click on what they assume is a advertiser-paid-for clip.&#xa0;</p><p>A similar issue came up with a Kin video called&#xa0;Adrienne Houghton's Beach Bag Essentials from the Facebook Watch franchise&#xa0;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/AllThingsAdrienneHoughton/">All Things Adrienne.</a></p><p>That video was accompanied by a link to a product on Amazon. Facebook smacked down a Watch publisher that was trying to make some extra money -&#160;and it points to a looming problem for media companies who've been burned before on the platform
