Royal Enfield sales rise 22% in May at 77,461 units

<p>Students gathered outside the University of Athens to demand lower tuition and protest education cuts.</p>
<p>They were also commemorating the <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/november/25/newsid_2546000/2546297.stm">1973 student uprising </a>that led to the fall of the former military junta.</p>
<p>That's when things got ugly. Riot police showed up and reportedly used tear gas and stun guns.</p>
<p>The protests coincided with <a href="http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/cache/ITY_PUBLIC/2-14112014-AP/EN/2-14112014-AP-EN.PDF">new economic data</a> announcing the official end of Greece's 6-year recession.</p>
<p>It's now <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/greek-growth-rates-put-germany-eurozone-to-shame-2014-11-14">the fastest-growing economy in Europe</a>, but things aren't really looking good. Unemployment is still 26.6 percent, the economy is way smaller than it was before the crisis, and it could take decades to get back to pre-recession levels, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/greece-is-finally-out-of-recession-after-six-bitter-and-horrible-years-2014-11">BI's Mike Bird reported</a>.</p>
<p>That, and a <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2014/nov/14/eurozone-gdp-growth-figures-live#block-5465d352e4b074b4f9c77186">university-wide student lock-out</a> ahead of the anniversary of the Athens uprising, led students to the streets.</p>

Amazon was down Thursday afternoon

Robinhood was hit with trading issues on Thursday

Paris, Apr 9 (AFP) The worldwide number of fatalities from the novel coronavirus pandemic rose to 88,981 on Thursday, according to a tally compiled by AFP at 1100 GMT from official sources.<p>More than 1,519,260 declared cases have been registered in 192 countries and territories since the epidemic first emerged in China in December. Of these cases, at least 312,100 are now considered recovered.</p><p>The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organisation (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections.</p><p>Many countries are only testing the most serious cases.</p><p>Italy, which recorded its first death in late February, has had the most fatalities with 17,669 from 139,422 infections.</p><p>Spain has recorded 15,238 fatalities from 152,446 infections.</p><p>The death toll in the United States is the third highest, at 14.817 from 432,132 infections -- the highest number of cases in the world.</p><p>France has reported 10,869 deaths and 112,950 infections followed by Britain with 7,097 deaths and 60,733 cases.</p><p>China -- excluding Hong Kong and Macau -- has to date declared 3,335 deaths and 81,865 cases, with 77,279 recoveries.</p><p>Since 1900 GMT on Wednesday, Somalia announced its first coronavirus-linked death.</p>Europe has listed 787,744 cases and 62,402 deaths to date, the US and Canada together have 451,315 cases with 15,273 deaths, Asia 127,727 cases and 4,504 deaths, the Middle East 88,295 cases and 4,354 deaths, Latin America and the Caribbean 45,523 cases with 1,814 deaths, Africa 11,519 cases with 577 deaths and Oceania 7,146 cases with 57 deaths. Paris, Apr 16 (AFP) The worldwide death toll from the novel coronavirus pandemic rose to 137,500 on Thursday, according to a tally compiled by AFP at 1100 GMT from official sources.<p>More than 2,083,820 declared cases have been registered in 193 countries and territories since the epidemic first emerged in China in December.</p><p>Of these cases, at least 450,500 are now considered recovered.The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections. Many countries are testing only the most serious cases.</p><p>In the United States, now the epicentre of the pandemic, the death toll stood at 30,985 with 639,664 infections. Following his murder, more than 30,000 government documents - totaling millions of pages - have been incrementally released to the public, although many of them have been redacted or only partially released.</p><p>Trump sparked controversy when, during the 2016 presidential primary, he suggested that Sen. Ted Cruz's father was involved in Kennedy's assassination and had contacts with Lee Harvey Oswald, the man who pulled the trigger. Trump hasn't yet apologized for the claim.</p><p>Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, just over two years into his presidency. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/top-theories-about-the-jfk-assassination-2017-10/#the-mafia-theory-2">Conspiracy theories about his murder have swirled ever since</a>.</p><p>Of the tens of thousands of documents already partially released, approximately 3,100 still remain classified. No one knows exactly what information is contained in the files; the only guide is <a href="http://2017jfk.org/countdown-to-2017/">an index</a> that vaguely lists the contents of the secret documents.</p><p>The index does, however, present eyebrow-raising file names that seem to implicate a connection between the Assassination Records Review Board and the CIA. Mark Zuckerberg Will Be Answering Your Questions On Thursday

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>French President Francois Hollande says the European Central Bank is going to announce QE this week.</p>
<p>Mario Draghi and the rest of the European Central Bank are unlikely to be happy with the intervention. Either he's wrong, and markets are likely to be even more disappointed on Thursday, or he's right and they've been beaten to the announcement. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/hollande-says-ecb-will-announce-quantitative-easing-plans-thursday-1421666714">Here's what he said at a speech for business owners in a speech this morning, according to the Wall Street Journal</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>On Thursday, the ECB will take the decision to buy sovereign debt, which will provide significant liquidity to the European economy and create a movement that is favorable to growth</span></p>
<p><span>Hollande has been calling for easier policy for some time, and there have been frequent complaints about the strength of the euro from his government. Buying government bonds from investors is usually called quantitative easing (QE), the sort that the Bank of England and Fed did immediately after the financial crisis. The point is to reduce the return on the bonds, and try to drive investors into other assets, to drive economic activity (and inflation). </span></p>
<p>According to German magazine Der Spiegel, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/01/17/us-ecb-merkel-draghi-idUSKBN0KQ0SH20150117">Draghi has presented his plans for QE to German Chancellor Angela Merkel already</a>. Merkel doesn't have a direct say in monetary policy, but since late December Draghi and other ECB top brass have given five interviews to German media, suggesting that they're trying to get their point across to the public.</p>
<p>It remains to be seen how QE will work in Europe, which is much more financially fragmented than the US or <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword>, and how big the scheme will be. But as far as the French President is concerned, we should be expecting it on Thursday, January 22. </p>

HOLLANDE: The ECB Is Going To Do QE On Thursday

New Delhi, Apr 28 () Billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) will on Thursday consider a rights issue - the first such issue in nearly three decades - as it steps up efforts to pare debt.<p> The Board of the country's largest company will meet on April 30 to consider and approve audited financial results of the firm for the quarter and year ended March 31 as also to recommend dividend, RIL said in a regulatory filing.</p><p> It would also "consider a proposal to issue equity shares to existing shareholders on Rights basis, as may be permitted under applicable law, subject to such regulatory/statutory approvals, as may be required," the company said without giving details.</p><p> The move comes within days of RIL agreeing to sell 9.99 per cent stake in its digital platform to Facebook Inc for USD 5.7 billion or Rs 43,574 crore.</p><p> Ambani had in August last year unveiled plans to cut debt to zero by 2021. As part of this plan, RIL has been seeking strategic partnerships across its businesses while targeting to deleverage the balance sheet.</p><p> At the end of December quarter, RIL had an outstanding debt of Rs 3,06,851 crore. It also had cash in hand of Rs 1,53,719 crore, bringing the net debt position to Rs 1,53,132 crore.</p><p> Analysts expect dilution of at least 5 per cent through the rights issue. In other words, each shareholder will be entitled to apply for five new shares for every 100 shares held. This will help RIL raise about Rs 40,000 crore, assuming some discount to the current trading price.</p><p> Typically, cash-strapped companies use rights issues to raise money when they really need it. In these rights offerings, companies grant shareholders the right, but not the obligation, to buy new shares at a discount to the current trading price.</p><p> The last time RIL tapped the public for funds was in 1991 when it had issued convertible debentures. The debentures were subsequently converted into equity shares at Rs 55 apiece.</p><p> As part of its balancesheet deleveraging plans, RIL is talking to Saudi Aramco for selling a fifth of its oil-to-chemicals business for an asking of USD 15 billion and has sold half of its fuel retail venture to BP Plc for Rs 7,000 crore and telecommunication tower business to Brookfield for Rs 25,200 crore.</p><p> But the crash in oil prices has created uncertainty over the timeline for the completion of the Aramco deal.</p><p> On August 12, 2019, RIL announced that it has signed a non-binding letter of intent to sell a 20 per cent stake in its oil-to-chemical (O2C) business to Saudi Aramco.</p><p> The O2C business, which has an enterprise valuation of USD 75 billion, includes RIL's refining and petrochemical divisions, and RIL's 51 per cent stake in its fuel marketing business. The company had sold a 49 per cent stake in its fuel marketing business in India to BP Plc for USD 1 billion.</p><p> In July 2019, RIL announced the sale of its telecommunications tower business - which was already transferred to the investment infrastructure trust, InvIT, to Brookfield Asset Management Inc for Rs 25,200 crore.</p> Together, proceeds from these transactions will result in a reduction in RIL's net debt. Reliance to consider rights issue, dividend on Thursday

<p class="source"><span>Justin Sullivan/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella.</p>Word among employees at Microsoft is that the layoffs that have been rumored lately will begin on Thursday.<p>Conference rooms are booked and some employees are being scheduled for short 15-minute meetings with their managers, according to several postings on the anonymous chat app Blind that were shared with Business Insider.</p><p>Only verified employees at a company can access Blind. The app is popular at Microsoft; some 25,000 of the software giant's employees use it, <a href="http://us.teamblind.com/">according to Blind</a>.</p><p>Microsoft has not confirmed the layoff but the company did send an email to employees on Monday<span> alerting them that it plans to make wide-ranging changes to its sales organization, <a href="https://www.geekwire.com/2017/microsoft-reportedly-set-lay-off-thousands-part-massive-sales-reorganization/">GeekWire reported</a>. </span></p><p>The employees who commented on Blind did not know how many total jobs would be cut. Not all of them who have meetings scheduled Thursday believe that they personally will be laid off. Some of those who commented on Blind believe that, instead, they will be transferred to new roles within Microsoft.</p><p><a href="https://techcrunch.com/2017/07/02/microsoft-is-laying-off-thousands-of-staff/">TechCrunch reported last week that Microsoft is planning to lay off "thousands" of workers</a> worldwide.</p><p>Even so, it's possible the cuts will amount to a small percentage of the company's workforce. As of March, <span>Microsoft employed 121,567 people worldwide with about 52,000 employees in its global sales, marketing and worldwide business units. </span></p><p><span>July has become the classic month for Microsoft to announce layoffs, coming right after its fiscal year ends on June 30. Last year the company announced it would cut cut 2,850 positions. Those layoffs were dragged out over a period of months, with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/about-700-microsoft-employees-to-be-laid-off-sources-say-2017-1">the final 700 cut in January</a>.</span></p><p><span>Although layoffs can be painful for the people who lose their jobs, not everyone thinks this reorg is a bad idea. The changes are intended to make it easier for Microsoft to sell subscriptions to its all-important cloud computing services. </span></p><p><span>In the current sales structure, too many deals have to go through the hands of too many different sales and marketing people, employees say. The announcement comes a day after White House press secretary <keyword id="144530" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jen-Psaki">Jen Psaki</keyword> said that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/psaki-biden-wont-visit-collapsed-miami-building-supports-investigation-2021-6">Biden did not have plans to visit the area.</a></p><p>Biden earlier this week said that he would provide any necessary federal relief to help respond to what's being seen as one of the worst accidental building collapses in US history. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has deployed teams to assist state and local officials with ongoing search and rescue operations.</p><p>"This is an unimaginably difficult time for the families enduring this tragedy," Biden said in a <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/06/27/statement-from-president-joe-biden-on-call-with-fema-administrator-deanne-criswell/">statement</a> on Sunday. "For those who are waiting in anguish for word of their loved ones as search and rescue efforts continue in the aftermath of this catastrophic incident, the pain of the uncertainty is an added, heartbreaking burden. My heart goes out to every single person suffering during this awful moment."</p><p>The president supports an investigation into the <keyword id="45337" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="collapse">collapse</keyword>, Psaki told reporters on Tuesday, as the cause still remains unknown.</p><p>Several reports documenting problems with the building have emerged over the past five days. </p><p>In an April 9 letter obtained by <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2021/06/28/miami-condo-deterioration-worsening-april-letter-says/7790478002/">USA Today</a> on Monday, Jean Wodnicki, president of the building's association, <a href="https://www.insider.com/florida-condo-president-warned-worsening-conditions-months-before-collapse-2021-6">warned that the basement garage's conditions</a> had "gotten significantly worse" since an inspection around two and a half years before.</p><p>According to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/collapsed-florida-condo-had-regular-floods-in-basement-reports-2021-6">accounts from people who have previously worked at and lived in the building, </a>the basement garage would regularly flood, which may have been a factor that led to the collapse.</p>

The next day, the magnitude of the situation hit home in America.</p><p>The virus, which causes a disease known as COVID-19, has been found in more than 100 countries outside of the outbreak's epicenter in Wuhan, China. Since the outbreak began late last December, the number of coronavirus cases has surpassed 128,000, with a death toll of at least 4,720.</p><h2>In the US, there are nearly 1,700 confirmed cases, and at least 41 people have died from the disease.</h2><p>Though, two weeks ago, Nancy Messonnier of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <a href="https://www.aappublications.org/news/aapnewsmag/2020/02/25/preparedness022520.full.pdf">sounded the alarm</a> saying, "It's not so much a question of if this will happen anymore, but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness," before Wednesday night, and to a greater degree on Thursday, the US had a mixed response to the coronavirus outbreak. </p><p>Americans appeared to respond by panic-buying supplies, but social distancing practices were not immediately put into effect.</p><p>States only began to declare emergencies at the end of February, the White House continued to give mixed messages about the severity of the outbreak, and testing for COVID-19 has lagged behind other countries.</p><p>There were signs that the country was moving in the direction of social distancing measures: This week SXSW was canceled, Coachella and Stagecoach were postponed. Tech companies began asking employees to work from home and a <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-news-today-index-reaction-coronavirus-trump-fed-stimulus-2020-3-1028991586">spooked stock market tumbled</a> into bear territory; on Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial reached its lowest since 1987.</p><p>But then the dam broke.</p><p>On Wednesday night, two-time Oscar winner <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tom-hanks-and-wife-rita-wilson-test-positive-for-coronavirus-2020-3">Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson</a> announced they had tested positive for the coronavirus, while they were in Australia for pre-production of the upcoming untitled Elvis Presley biopic.</p><p>The Hanks' announcement hit at the same time as a televised address by President Donald Trump. In his speech, which necessitated several clarifications from the White House thereafter, President Donald Trump announced that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-trump-europe-travel-ban-uk-exception-2020-3">travel from Europe except for the United Kingdom</a> would be suspended for 30 days - adding to the nation's existent travel advisories to parts of Asia.</p><p>He also announced <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-coronavirus-press-conference-coronavirus-economic-measures-europe-travel-ban-2020-3">potential economic measures</a> as the US braces for the economic fallout of the disease, including asking Congress to provide payroll tax relief and waivers for small businesses.</p><p>The dominoes continued to tumble. The coronavirus - which shut down much of China for a month and forced an unprecedented country-wide lockdown in Italy - was real.</p><p>Though the president has not declared a national emergency, 23 states have declared emergencies, and companies have stepped in to implement social distancing measures - banning large gatherings and canceling events.</p><h2>US sports and entertainment have taken a hit.</h2><p>Wednesday evening, the NBA also announced it would suspend its 2019-2020 season after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com.au/nba-season-suspended-rudy-gobert-coronavirus-2020-3">Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive</a> for the coronavirus, also prompting a quarantine on the teams he had played in the days prior to his diagnosis.</p><p>On Thursday, the MLB, NHL, and NCAA <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/major-colleges-and-universities-going-remote-over-coronavirus-fears">followed suit</a>, canceling all games and postseason tournaments like March Madness. NASCAR and Indycar will continue to hold races but with no fans in attendance.</p><p>Aside from sports, the entertainment industry in the US has also borne the brunt of the disease. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo banned gatherings of more than 500 people, shuttering Broadway until mid-April. <a href="https://www.insider.com/disney-postpones-mulan-new-mutants-antlers-coronavirus-2020-3">Disney postponed the premieres of upcoming movies</a>, including the must-anticipated release of the live-action "Mulan."</p><p>Major <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/museums-and-theme-parks-closed-because-of-the-coronavirus-outbreak-2020-3">US amusement parks</a> at Disneyland, Disney World, Universal Studios Hollywood, and Universal Orlando Resort announced that their doors would be closing to visitors until the end of the month.</p><h2>Grade schools are shuttering and universities are extending spring breaks and hosting online classes.</h2><p>Universities in the US - including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/major-colleges-and-universities-going-remote-over-coronavirus-fears">Columbia, Harvard, and Ohio State</a> - are moving students off-campus and shifting over to remote classes amid the outbreak.</p><p>Local school districts have also been moving to cancel classes and keep students at home, including Houston Independent School District, which is the seventh-largest school district in the country.</p><p>This is only a sampling of the ways the US has been responding to the coronavirus outbreak, and it exemplifies the sudden reactive approach the country is taking to the outbreak nearly three months since it began.</p><p>In comparison, China imposed an unprecedented quarantine on tens of millions of people living in the country, including the 11 million people living in Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak. New Delhi, Mar 10 () Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will hold meeting with chief executives of amalgamating banks on Thursday to review preparedness for the merger beginning April 1.<p> Earlier this month, the Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved consolidation of 10 state-owned banks into four.</p><p> According to sources, the finance minister will review planning and preparedness of merging banks on March 12.</p><p> Agenda of the high-profile meeting includes readiness of anchor banks to minimise disruption to customers and ensuring credit flow to productive sectors of the economy, sources said.</p><p> The meeting will also review preparedness of delivery of banking services and products to customers after the mergers.</p><p> It will also discuss business and financial plans, including credit and deposits growth, and year-wise synergy realisation after the mergers.</p><p> The mergers are scheduled to come into effect from April 1.</p><p> As per the proposal, Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) and United Bank of India (UBI) would be merged into Punjab National Bank (PNB). The move will make PNB India's second-biggest public sector bank after State Bank of India (SBI).</p><p> Syndicate Bank will be merged with Canara Bank, creating India's fourth-largest public sector bank.</p><p> Union Bank of India, Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank will be merged together to create fifth-largest public sector bank.</p><p> Indian Bank and Allahabad Bank will be merged to form India's seventh-largest public sector bank.</p><p> The mega consolidation would help create banks with scale comparable to global banks and capable of competing effectively in India and globally.</p><p> Last year, Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank were merged with Bank of Baroda. Prior to this, the government had merged five associate banks of SBI and Bharatiya Mahila Bank with SBI.</p> Citing an example of the merger of Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank with Bank of Baroda, Sitharaman after the Cabinet meeting had said the operating profit of the resulting lender has improved and retail loans are now sanctioned in 11 days on an average as compared to 23 days earlier.
