For the very first time, a lead character in the movie is transgender in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui starring Ayushmann Khurana and Vaani Kapoor. Increasing roles but not being cast While Bollywood might seem to be taking one step forward, it has brought out many issues – be it roles for the community and of course, casting transgenders for the roles. The apathy towards LGBTQ+ community is also affecting artists who intend to find their place in the showbiz which has been expanding thanks to the number of web series and more under production. Yet, it’s falling short of people to accommodate them. Transgender actor Sushant Divgikar criticises the casting of cisgender actors as transgender characters in Bollywood. This comes as Bollywood is making several movies on gender diversity but tends to cast popular actors instead of the ‘right’ fit. “If a transgender person is not allowed to play a transgender character on screen in a film, they are not allowed to play a man in a film and transgender people are not allowed to play women in a film so what do transgender artists play? transgender trees in the back?” asks Divgikar on his Instagram. Divgikar is quite vocal about challenges faced by <keyword id="1218847" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lgbtq-community" source="Orion">LGBTQ community</keyword> in society and Bollywood. Sharing another such experience on gender disparity on Youtube, Divgikar revealed that they were auditioning for a toothpaste ad when the casting director told them even before they entered the room, “You are too gay for this advertisement.” Yet, not all is lost. A few actors from the community have found their standing. Jim Sarbh, a popular actor who played a key role in the superhit movie Padmavaat, also plays a role in Made in India. In the popular Amazon Prime Video series, he plays a straight character. “It was really difficult playing a heterosexual male so that was a first big challenge that I had to overcome, what cultural significance would be here and whether people will accept it,” <a href="https://www.facebook.com/YesWeExistIndia/videos/1246256258883966/">he said sarcastically in an interview </a>as he believes there is still socia stigma around the community. While the number of shows and movies portraying queer connection are increasing – large numbers are played by A-list actors like Sonam Kapoor, Fawad Khan, Ayushmann Khurana, Manoj Bajpai and more. ‘It was the most challenging film because I have never done such a character before’, <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/bollywood/aligarh-was-most-challenging-film-for-me-manoj-bajpayee/">said Manoj about playing a gay character </a>that was named Siras in Aligarh. India has a long way to go in terms of gender issues and is still struggling to get many aspects like casting and treatment of women. Case in point is the controversy created by Shahid Kapoor’s Kabir Singh which was criticized for toxic masculinity. Thappad was touted to be a response to Kabir Singh. “Everyone should do one thing they feel will take us towards gender equality – and getting rid of stereotypes and conditioning will surely be a step in that direction,” said Tapsee Pannu who played the protagonist in the movie. You’re too gay for this ad, and other ways Indian showbiz ignores LGBTQ+ artists

New Delhi, June 17 (IANS) Kanishka Chaudhry, a high-school student from Gujarat, never had an inkling like all of us that mental health would become such a raging debate after the suicide of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput. The girl, however, is ready with an iOS app to help teenagers and adults overcome mental health issues. Apple has announced 350 winners of its annual WWDC Swift Student Challenge from 41 different countries and regions, including nearly 15 from India and she is among those next generation of coders and creators. Apps that can help people make more connections and improve people's mental health always motivated Kanishka to do something similar for humanity. "Imagine an app where people with mental health problems can express themselves without any limits and the best thing about that app is they don't have to share their real identity, like on traditional social media platforms," Kanishka told IANS. A student of GNFC Narmada Vidyalaya in Bharuch, Gujarat, she developed one such app called 'Ralasi Teen' during the lockdown period that would be available soon on Apple App Store. "People can share their stories and problems off limits and can have like-minded people to interact with," she said. When she won WWDC 2019 scholarship last year, it gave her some kind of positive hope that even not-so-famous apps can bring a change to a community. "That really encouraged me to do better and develop more apps and software. Apple really encourages students to make apps that bring a change. And that really encourages me to make apps for the community," said Kanishka. She made an Xcode playground about mental health awareness this year. The playground starts with some text slide show showing some real facts about mental health. Apple Xcode is an integrated development environment for macOS containing a suite of software development tools. The playground that she developed is divided into three parts and shows symptoms of different mental health problems with practical tips. Indore-based student Amit Sawant who is another winner of the Swift Student Challenge said Apple is motivating students like him to take part in programming through the challenge. "People are facing lots of mental health issues in this pandemic time like depression and I would love to contribute to develop an app that can help people maintain their mental health," Amit told IANS. He is creating a platform for sponsors, content creators, event organizers, and anyone who needs sponsorship after creating next-gen solutions to solve real-life problems. "This will ease the process for content creators and event organizers, without worrying about sponsorship and meeting the right set of people," he said. Another winner Hariharan Murugesan from Chennai started coding in 2014 when Swift was announced. He already has two apps on the App Store - Neural Vision for iOS and Inhale Air Quality Monitor for iOS and macOS. "Augmented Reality (AR) apps which tend to create a bridge between reality and computer-generated objects fascinates me. I believe that AR apps have big potential for almost all the fields, particularly education," said Hariharan. "With technologies like Apple's ARKit getting more and more advanced year by year, and entry level iPads getting really affordable, I think AR will revolutionise the way we explore things," he added. Indian girl creates iOS app to help people shun suffering in silence

New Delhi, Mar 30 () German wholesaler Metro Cash &amp; Carry on Monday asked for a "uniform policy" to be followed by state governments in India for operating stores during the lockdown imposed in the wake of coronavirus pandemic. The company's arm Metro Cash &amp; Carry India said as of now it has adequate stocks of all necessary items, but is still grappling with local authorities in several states over working hours and visits by customers to its stores. Besides, availability of manpower for smooth operation is also an issue as only around 40 per cent manpower is available to operate its cash and carry format wholesale stores. "There should be uniformity in the policy across the states. Even within the same state, there should be the same policy across the cities," Metro Cash &amp; Carry India MD &amp; CEO Arvind Mediratta told . He further said, "While there is clarity from the Centre, at the state level there are a lot of challenges." Out of 28 stores which Metro Cash &amp; Carry operates in India, the company is facing 'severe restrictions' imposed by local authorities at eight stores in cities like Amritsar, Jalandhar, Lucknow, Meerut, Surat, Indore, Vijaywada. "In three stores we are allowed to open only till 12 noon to 1 pm in the afternoon and some places, we are only allowed to deliver kirana (groceries)," he said. Mediratta further said, "In some states like Maharashtra, Delhi and even in cities like Bengaluru, we are allowed to operate stores 24 hours. On the other hand there are states like Andhra Pradesh, MP and Punjab where there are restrictions. There should be uniformity across the states. Even within the same state, there should be the same policy across the cities." In Zirakpur in Punjab, stores are opened for walk-in customers and delivery, while in Amritsar and Jalandhar in the same state, the company is permitted to deliver within fixed hours only, he said. Similarly, in UP, the stores are not allowed to open in Lucknow, but there are no restrictions in Ghaziabad. "I do not know how the government have different policies within the same state," he said, adding "every day the notification keeps on changing also." On manpower shortage, he said there is a "serious impact" because of lesser availability of the staff, which is down to 40 to 45 per cent. "This is not adequate to run a store, we need at least 60 to 65 per cent staff. We are working at curtailed hours," he said, adding "this is certainly affecting our operations". Metro Cash &amp; Carry India is now operating stores only in one shift for eight to nine hours, he added. Commenting on supplies, Mediratta said, "Now we have enough supply. We have received stocks on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and there is no major problem right now. "There were some problems on the first two days of the lockdown as trucks were stopped and not allowed to cross borders, including those trucks with essential items. Then we had a meeting with Minister of Commerce Piyush Goyal and after that it was shorted out. Things are beginning to flow now." While 2 years back, most of us would not be comfortable buying cosmetics online, the pandemic changed that, and it will help the larger market in the long-run. Another change the pandemic brought about in the minds of consumers is a move towards using brands that use more natural ingredients in their products. Consumers are also choosing to opt for brands that have a larger brand purpose. British-born, ethical cosmetics company The Body Shop has been in India for the past 16 years. It was one of the early brands that attracted consumers due to its range of naturally-inspired cosmetics and toiletry products. For years, the brand has been pioneering the philosophy that business can be a force for good, and has been launching new standards of ethics in business. In the past few years, the brand has seen healthy growth in India. Physical retail stores continue to be the heart of consumer experience, sensorial experience, education and trust operated by human connection. Our omni-channel strategy has helped address the new emerging scenarios to address customer queries and reach them at their convenient channel. How did you navigate these challenging times? The pandemic has been a period of learning for the brand. It gave us the time and chance to carefully evaluate consumer behaviour and outlook in order to plan strategically for the future. We were able to understand our customer’s needs better. We have learned to be agile and nimble. Despite the economic magnitude of the lockdown, the beauty industry may have proven to be reasonably resilient with the new emerging normal. In the past two years of the new-normal, the consumers adapted to new channels and wellness routines. Personal hygiene and beauty trends had an uptick because people spent more time on themselves. The increased awareness around beauty and self-care presented the brand with a great niche and campaigns like 'Self Care Sunday' or 'Spa at Home' were very well received by the audience. We also revamped our digital presence by building a consumer-friendly digital store that is complete with cutting-edge technology and a user-first interface. In an attempt to reach customers, we expanded our social media presence with tools to assist hands-on product experience. Digital and social channels have been at the forefront of consumer engagement Anytime, Anywhere shopping service for customers, via Social commerce, WhatsApp Shopping, Assisted Sales, Home delivery, going beyond Express Delivery to 2 hours’ delivery, Expert Chats, Live video consultations and so on. Technology played a vital role in navigating through these times by helping our customers make the right decision in absence of product touch &amp; feel experience. Q) How are you going deeper into the country? What kind of sales are you witnessing from smaller cities? Are you also focusing more on increasing your offline presence in Tier II and Tier III cities? Rising awareness amongst consumers, increased incomes coupled with explosion in the presence of digital platforms the demand from Tier II &amp; III cities has increased manifolds. Customers believe in buying less but buying quality. The appetite to spend in these smaller cities is increasing and customers are becoming more conscious about what to use for their skin and body. Additionally, post pandemic, a great chunk of people have shifted back to their hometowns from metro areas. However, they are still looking for their favourites for personal use. Keeping up with the need of our customers we have a robust plan of opening 25 new stores in FY 2022. 70% of these stores will be opened in other Tier II cities like Indore, Bhopal, Patna and Shimla. Q)Over the past few years, there has been a movement towards cruelty-free products. How has this helped you build your brand narrative? Since its inception in 1976, The Body Shop is a cruelty free brand. We believe and fought the cause that animals should not be used for cosmetic testing. Therefore, all the ingredients are ethically sourced and have never been tested on any animal. The Body Shop passionately believes that no animal should be harmed in the name of cosmetics and that animal testing on products and ingredients is outdated, cruel and unnecessary. This is why The Body Shop and Cruelty Free International partnered to deliver the largest and most ambitious campaign ever to seek a global ban on the use of animals to test cosmetic products and ingredients. In June 2017, The Body shop India launched itsForever Against Animal Testingcampaign with Cruelty Free International and became the first international beauty brand to campaign against animal testing in cosmetics globally. Through this partnership, we aimed to normalize the conversation around periods and raise funds towards menstrual health and education efforts for communicating deeply affected by the pandemic. Q) Going ahead, what will your areas of focus be to capture a bigger market share in India? How important is the Indian market for the brand in the global scheme of things? India is a country of diverse people and that is its biggest strength. We have a great diversity of faces, skin tones, beauty regimes, rituals, preferences, and regional beauty traditions, which is a unique opportunity for us. They are also well aware about the ingredients, heavily relying on digital and social media platforms and growing consumption of do-it-yourself (DIY) content. Affordability is key for the customers while demanding high levels of product innovations. As a result, we are investing in video content and reinforce it with a good-quality website. Also, we plan to leverage technology to mimic offline experiences. We use more plant-based and recycled plastic which encourages people to reuse, recycle and repurpose. Our long-term goal is to create a circular packaging strategy, which involves recycling or repurposing all of our product packaging. The customers are being transparently educated about ingredients, packaging and sustainability efforts via Omni channel strategy. Our competitive pricing strategy for India is part of an ambitious plan to expand its reach to more people and smaller cities in quick time. This makes us more affordable and more accessible amongst the millennials across the Tier II and III cities.

The Work Space?

When a boy named <keyword id="133007" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jaskaran-Singh">Jaskaran Singh</keyword> from Delhi secured admission to Indian Institute of Management (IIM-B), Bangalore just two days ago, one person was super proud of his achievement - Mr <keyword id="3321960" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vaidyanathan-Singararaman">Vaidyanathan Singararaman</keyword>. 
 It was a Monday, and we were busy kick starting another new week, but Mr Singararaman wanted the world to stop and take notice of this boy. He took to his <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword> page to narrate what a remarkable day it was. One of hope, one of love and one to take inspiration from.. 
 He told us - Jaskaran, a student with Spinal Cord Injury at the cervical level, had become the first of his kind to make way into the Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management at one of the <keyword id="46923" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIMs">IIMs</keyword> in the country. Basically, he is now an MBA student at <keyword id="60501" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIM-Bangalore">IIM Bangalore</keyword>. 
 
For a person who is paralysed neck down (a quadriplegic technically saying), one who can barely move his fingers and uses a custom made wireless keypad at work, it’s unbelievable that Jaskaran scored a whopping 99.04 per cent in CAT. We know what you are wondering... He wrote the exam with the help of a scribe. 
 
“This is an absolutely remarkable effort considering that CAT Organisers (IIM-A this year) did not accede to any of his essential requests,” Mr Singararaman’s <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10209605867804555&amp;set=pcb.10209605902325418&amp;type=3">Facebook post read</a>. 
 
It’s not his injury, but his determination to fight against all odds and emerge as the winner that makes courageous people like him extremely SPECIAL for all of us. We cannot say it has been easy for Jaskaran to get to where he is today, we probably cannot even imagine the trials and tribulations in his life. But, things would have been little more difficult for him despite having cracked the entrance, had it not been for this man who fought the system 16 years back. 
 
We are talking of Mr Singararaman, the one who wrote the Facebook post on Jaskaran on Monday. He himself suffered a Spinal Cord Injury back in 1990 and was refused readmission by IIM Bangalore.

"It took the efforts of Dr Suranjan Bhattacharji and my friends led by Elango Thambiah to change the mind of the management. IIM-B now is a leader in high quality access thanks to efforts spearheaded by Prof Rishikesha Krishnan, who is now the Director of IIM Indore," he says. 
 
If you are thinking about Mr Suranjan Bhattacharji, he is who changed minds in the college on denial of Mr Singararaman's readmission. A very highly regarded person in the top medicine-related places across the world, Mr Singararaman says Bhattacharji has made difference to several thousands of physically challenged persons across India. Now retired, he has gone to try and lift healthcare in a remote part of Orissa near the Niyamgiri Hills. 
 
It was probably this collective effort 16 years ago, that a deserving candidate today is not denied admission to an IIM on account of his/her health. Jaskaran, however, has done what many of us cannot do with our hands and feet fully functional. He is an inspiration for everyone. One person who he couldn't have done this without is - Divya Parashar, a Clinical Psychologist at Indian Spinal Injuries Centre. 
 
Call it a coincidence, but I was sitting with Mr Vipul Rastogi - a Behavioural Neurology and Psychiatry specialist at Medanta Hospital - today, and he pointed out to me the need for more Psychologists in our country. I relate it to this story, even though he spoke to me generally. He said: “We need more psychologists who can attend to patients suffering from such health problems. The problem is we don’t have enough psychologists, and when we refer our patients to consult them, patients refuse citing reasons that they are either busy and would prefer to have medicines prescribed or it’s an expensive deal for them. We need more such doctors who can hand hold such patients in their hour of need.” 
 
It seems Divya has set the example for more medical students to become Psychologists and make a difference. She played perhaps the most important role in Jaskaran’s life after his spinal cord injury in a road accident in which he lost his entire family.
