<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image"></div><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/cameronnordholm/4992713168/">Flickr / Cameron Nordholm</a></div>Couples spent an average of <a href="http://blog.theknot.com/2013/03/07/average-wedding-cost-2013/" target="_blank">$28,500 to tie the knot</a> in 2012, according to a Wedding Channel/<keyword id="1758980" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TheKnot">TheKnot</keyword>.com report.
That's just a couple thousand dollars shy of what the average homebuyer spends on a downpayment today ($31,000 by <a href="http://www.trulia.com/home_prices/" target="_blank">Trulia's estimate</a>). 
And we're not even including the honeymoon. 
"In 2011, budgets increased for the first time since the economic downturn, and this past year, in 2012, we saw that wedding budgets are continuing to rise even more and to an all-time high since 2008," said Carley Roney, cofounder of The Knot.
It's not the bridal gown that had couples tipping their budgets either. Brides dropped just $1,200 on their <keyword id="15674" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Wedding-dress">wedding dress</keyword> last year, only about $100 more than the year prior.
They spent twice that much on the reception band alone. 
Blame the venue. Couples spent $800 more on the location of their ceremony last year than in 2011, which ate up nearly half their entire budget at $13,000. The only expense that came close was the engagement ring, which cost more than $5,400 on average.
Manhattan is still by far the priciest city for newlyweds, where they spent more than $77,000 on tying the knot –– a major leap from 2011's $65,000 price tag. That's more than five times as much as couples in chilly Alaska, where <keyword id="6367159" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Weddings">weddings</keyword> averaged $15,000.

When <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/loverly-2012-3">Kellee Khalil was first starting her network of wedding blogs, Loverly</a>, she received a coffee invitation from a business strategist at a top bridal site.
The strategist delivered a not-so-subtle threat.
"We have $70 million to buy competitors just so we can shut them down," Khalil was told.
It didn't deter Khalil, who continued building her wedding blog empire. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/loverly-a-pinterest-for-wedding-planning-onboards-700-brands-2012-12">Loverly indexes photos for 35 wedding blogs and 30 million images are viewed on Khalil's site every month</a>.
Her work hasn't gone unnoticed. Recently* she received another not-so-subtle threat.

How A Big Wedding Site Tried To Scare A Threatening Startup

<ul class="summary-list"><li>An engaged couple filmed themselves adding a speeding ticket fund to their wedding registry.</li><li>They posted it on TikTok as a joke for their friends and family, not expecting it to go viral.</li></ul>A couple added a speeding ticket fund to their online <a href="https://www.insider.com/wedding-registry-recommendations-modern-couples-therapist-picks-2023-9">wedding registry</a> after the groom-to-be was fined in the weeks leading up to their big day.On October 9, TikToker <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@imthatgurlneb" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Annabelle Griffin</a> posted <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@imthatgurlneb/video/7288095171068103982" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a video</a> with an on-screen caption that said her wedding was in 26 days, before the clip showed a close-up of a letter her fiancé James Worth was holding, which appeared to have been sent from Tushka Municipal Court, in Atoka, Oklahoma. The upload then showed a computer screen displaying an <a href="https://www.insider.com/wedding-registry-recommendations-modern-couples-therapist-picks-2023-9">online wedding registry</a>, which showed a listing titled "James's Speeding Ticket Fund," which amounted to $231, as Worth appeared to jokingly add "please help" in capital letters to the note box alongside it.In the caption beside the upload, Griffin tagged <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@imthatgurlneb/video/7288095171068103982" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the wedding planning service</a> they used to create their registry to ask if they could add "the state of oklahoma" to the places people could purchase gifts from, and included the hashtags <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/tag/speedingticket" target="_blank" rel="noopener">#speedingticket</a> and <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/tag/weddingregistry" target="_blank" rel="noopener">#weddingregistry</a>.Griffin told Insider in an email statement that the idea came about after Worth received a speeding ticket while visiting family in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and was intended as a joke to see if family and friends noticed. They thought it would be funny post to TikTok, where most of Griffin's followers are people she knows personally."I just thought it would be something our friends saw and laughed at. I really didn't think it would gain traction so fast. Once it started gaining more views, people started asking for the link to our wedding registry so they could donate," she told Insider.The video received over 378,000 views and 84 comments, many of which appeared to find the idea hilarious, while some wrote they'd also received speeding tickets around the time of their own weddings so they could relate to the situation. Viewers appeared to unanimously back the concept of the unconventional wedding fund, and some even offered to chip in themselves."I will donate for the plot. what's the link," a popular comment read that received over 3,000 likes, while another joked they would donate if they could come to the wedding.Griffin told Insider the attention made the pair a little nervous as they didn't necessarily want the details of their wedding made public. But she said lots of family and friends saw it and found it hilarious."All of our wedding guests know James and I and know that we love to joke around. Only a few dollars were donated, but it was all from people who had found our registry from TikTok," she said.The speeding ticket fund is no longer available to view on the couple's public registry, although it was previously seen by Insider. In 2003, <a href="http://www.retailmenot.com/" target="_blank">Trae Bodge</a> and her then-fiance, Chris, were determined to spend a more modest amount: $9,000 ($11,200 in today's dollars). 
But Bodge, then running a small cosmetics company, and her entrepreneur fiance still wanted an elaborate affair. They had envisioned a three-day event and had more than 100 guests on their list already. 
"We didn't have a lot of money and our parents didn't have a lot of money, so we knew we couldn't spend a lot," says Bodge, now senior retail expert for couponing site <a href="http://www.retailmenot.com/" target="_blank">Retailmenot.com.</a> 
Through careful and creative planning, they were able to trim $18,000 from their budget and still have the wedding of their dreams.

Now, the couple is planning their wedding with one goal in mind: <a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/3030778/most-innovative-companies/with-this-tech-i-thee-wed-how-one-couple-created-their-dream-weddi?partner">To only use tech-driven startups to throw an event for under $10k.</a> They want to have complete creative and financial control over their wedding, knowing all too well that venues and companies jack up their prices for "once-in-a-lifetime events."
Fast Company on Wednesday <a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/3030778/most-innovative-companies/with-this-tech-i-thee-wed-how-one-couple-created-their-dream-weddi?partner">profiled the couple</a>, and we broke down which startups are replacing traditional companies. 
<h2>The Breakdown</h2>
VENUE: Instead of renting an expensive venue, they found a spectacular Williamsburg roof-deck location through <a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/3027107/punk-meet-rock-airbnb-brian-chesky-chip-conley" target="_self">Airbnb</a>. 
INVITATIONS: The couple ditched fancy paper invitations and used Paperless Post to send classy e-invites to their friends. Even compared to the 2013 national average of $29,858, Healy and Akuete's wedding comes in at a fraction of the price. These figures, drawn from TheKnot.com's annual survey of 13,000 brides and grooms, show that wedding budgets have been steadily increasing since the economic downturn of 2008, reaching a record high last year.
