The figures were confirmed today <a href="http://www.icc-ccs.org/news/904-somali-pirate-clampdown-caused-drop-in-global-piracy-imb-reveals" target="_blank" title="by the International Maritime Bureau.">by the International Maritime Bureau.</a></p>
<p>The body's annual global piracy report showed more than 300 people were taken hostage at sea last year. Of that number 21 were injured - nearly all with guns or knives.</p>
<p>A total of 12 vessels were hijacked, 202 were boarded, 22 were fired upon and a further 28 reported attempted attacks. Nigerian pirates were particularly violent, killing one crew-member, and kidnapping 36 people to hold onshore for ransom.</p>
<p>"The single biggest reason for the drop in worldwide piracy is the decrease in Somali piracy off the coast of East Africa," said IMB director Captain Pottengal Mukundan.</p>
<p>He said <keyword id="6701762" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Somali-pirates">Somali pirates</keyword> had been deterred by a combination of factors, including the efforts of international navies, the use of private armed security teams, and the stabilising influence of Somalia's central government.</p>
<p>"It is imperative to continue combined international efforts to tackle Somali piracy. Any complacency at this stage could re-kindle pirate activity," Mukundan warned.</p>
<p>The 15 incidents attributed to Somali pirates in 2013 include the hijacking of two vessels, both of which were released within a day as a result of naval actions. A further eight vessels were fired upon. The figures are the lowest since 2006, when 10 Somali attacks were recorded.</p>
<p>237 pirate attacks took place off Somalia in 2011, but the figure dropped to 75 the following years as the clampdown got under way.</p>
<p>West African piracy made up 19 per cent of attacks worldwide last year. Nigerian pirates and armed robbers accounted for 31 of the region's 51 attacks, taking 49 people hostage and kidnapping 36 - more than in any year since 2008.</p>
<p>Pirates from Nigeria ventured far from their bases - into waters off Gabon, Ivory Coast and Togo, where they were linked with at least five of the region's seven reported vessel hijackings.</p>
<p>Malaysian waters saw the hijacking of two product tankers with 27 crew taken hostage, resulting in the theft of ships' property and cargo.</p>

Piracy At Sea Is At Its Lowest Level In Six Years

<p><div class="image-container float_right"><div class="image"><p class="source"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/alexa627/118210533/sizes/m/in/photostream/">Flickr/alexa627</a></p></div></div>Those using <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword> to decide whether someone is worth <keyword id="6357342" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hiring">hiring</keyword> may need to think twice before they use it, according to a new study.</p>
<p>The research, carried out by researchers at Florida State University, Old Dominion University, Clemson University and Accenture, found that the content on a person's Facebook profiles <a href="http://jom.sagepub.com/content/early/2013/12/13/0149206313515524.full.pdf+html">has no bearing on their overall job performance</a>.</p>
<p>The study looked at 416 <keyword id="6360288" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="college">college</keyword> students who were applying for full-time jobs. The students agreed to let the researchers capture screenshots of their Facebook walls, info pages, photos and interests.</p>
<p>The researchers then asked 86 <keyword id="24116" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="recruiters">recruiters</keyword> to view these pages, judge the personality of each student and rate how employable they appeared. Each one looked at five of the candidates and no further information about them was provided.</p>
<p>More than a year later, the researchers followed up with most of the former students' supervisor and asked them to review their job performance. They were able to get information of 142 of the 292 participants and found that the Facebook profile ratings "correlated essentially zero with job performance."</p>
<p>Those who got low scores either had profanity, photos of people at parties or drinking, strange profile pictures, religious quotes and sexual references.</p>
<p>The recruiters tended to rate women higher than men while white applicants rated higher than other demographics as well as those who had "traditionally non-white names and/or who were clearly non-white."</p>
<p>The study recommends against recruiters using social media for recruitment until it's proven that it's a reliable indicator for job performance.</p>

<p>If so, then two Swedish industrial design students have solved your problem and have created an "invisible helmet" for cyclists.</p>
<h3>Safety</h3>
<p>Bike helmets are a very important safety feature, especially for those who cycle around a busy city where both drivers and pedestrians can be a problem. But there is no denying that it can be difficult to find a stylish bike helmet and then there is the issue of the helmet hair.</p>
<p>The idea for the invisible helmet came to life in 2005 as part of a Masters' thesis, when Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin were studying industrial design at the University of Lund.The Hövding (invisible helmet) is actually an air bag, which uses a helium gas cylinder to inflate when its sensors detect a sudden jolt.</p>
<p>The helmets are also CE labelled, which means they comply with EU safety standards and have undergone a variety of safety tests.</p>

'Invisible' Bike Helmets Are A Real Thing Now

<p>When I was really young I didn’t understand other children and I hated big crowds like family events or football matches. Mum explained to me that I was wired differently, that it wasn’t a bad thing. She said that I could just do things differently, but I would still get everything done. And she told me that what I had was called Asperger’s.</p>
<p>I learned to enjoy my Asperger’s. When people call ASD an autistic spectrum disorder or a disability, I don’t like it . It doesn’t make me any less capable to do anything. Asperger’s lets me look at things from a totally different perspective – I can think outside the box. It makes the world kind of complicated and you have to keep figuring other people out.</p>
<p>When people say smile,  I don’t quite get them. I didn’t used to get sarcasm and I used to have to question when I heard it, like “was that it?” When teachers tell me to answer the question on the board – and there is no question mark – I wouldn’t understand. Sometimes teachers need to explain more to me than they do usually. Sometimes when people say something and they mean something else, that’s confusing.</p>
<h3><strong>Some things I don’t get</strong></h3>
<p>It really confuses me if someone shouts at me – I used to think that meant that they hated me. But now I realise it’s just that they want me to do it a bit better at that time. I get confused when a class gets a punishment because I think I am a good child and if I wasn’t doing the wrong thing, why should I get punished?</p>
<p>I don’t get racism. I would never be racist but I don’t understand why you can’t say what colour somebody’s skin is, the way you can with their eyes. Another thing I find confusing is emotions. I made up a word “emotious” and I use it to describe when lots of different emotions are all stirred in together.</p>
<p>For instance, if I am watching something like Les Miserables, I need to be able to chat with mum to tell the emotions apart. I often have to be careful about what I say. Before I say something I often say “no offence” in case I do offend someone. When I was little I never used to get jokes, but now I have a good sense of humour – I love sitcoms like Father Ted, Miranda, Spongebob and Mrs Brown’s Boys (but it can be rude).</p>
<h3><strong>Things I don’t like</strong></h3>
<p>People with Asperger’s are very sensitive with all their senses. I call it “sensatious” when there is a really strong sensation. Certain things can bother me, like I used to hate sound of the crowd roaring at a football game so I would cover my ears and scream. My parents kept bringing me and now I don’t notice the noise and I roar too! I also hate the feel of baked beans. If there is one in my food it makes me actually get sick. I don’t like the feel of some clothes fabrics. I always like cottony ones and I’m really sensitive to smells. I can’t deal with the smell of anything agricultural or anything to do with a farm.</p>
<p>There are lots of other things that can bother me like the smell of cigarettes, babies’ drool (I don’t really like babies until they are a bit more mature and have dried up).</p>
<p>I often can’t sit still, so at home I’m allowed play a ball and hit it against a wall to work off steam. In bad weather, I like to spin around like mad a few times which I call helicoptering.</p>
<h3><strong>Settles me down</strong></h3>
<p>When I feel nervous, ‘emotious”‘ sad or a bit hyper I need, what I call a ‘squish’. A squish means Mum gets me in  really tight hug and squeezes – it’s a bit like<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hug_machine">Temple Grandin’s hug-machine</a>. It really settles me down. In school when I need a squish I do things like roll up my sleeves or tighten my shoelaces.</p>
<p>I find it difficult trust people or new things. I know my autism makes me do whacky things and we get a laugh out of them, but I can do a normal things too. Overall, I like being different. My friends like me just the way I am too. I like the world through Asperger’s eyes.</p>
<p>When you get older, you can see that everybody is different somehow, that’s what makes the world interesting. I keep on learning at every new stage of my life. My Mum says she can read me like a book, and I say I use her like an encyclopaedia.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Some flights are arriving at the Dublin Airport with no baggage at all, said Sky Handling Partner.</li><li>Some airlines are choosing "on a daily basis which flights they're not going to load."</li></ul><p>Some flights are arriving at the Dublin Airport with no baggage at all, a ground-handling company told an Irish parliament committee on transport.</p><p>Some airlines "choose on a daily basis which flights they're not going to load" due to staff shortages, said <a href="https://skyhandlingpartner.ie/index.php/about-us/">Gerard Kenny,</a> a group operations manager at Sky Handling Partners, as reported by the <a href="https://www.irishmirror.ie/news/irish-news/returning-4200-lost-bags-dublin-27582159">Irish Mirror</a> and <a href="https://www.thejournal.ie/dublin-airport-lost-bags-5826380-Jul2022/">TheJournal.ie.</a> </p><p>As a result, some flights are arriving at the airport with "with no baggage loaded" at all, Kenny told the committee on Tuesday, per the media outlets.</p><p>Kenny likened the situation to "trying to climb a sand dune at the moment in Dublin — as soon as we start to make some progress through baggage, another aircraft could come in missing 60 bags or missing all of its bags, potentially."</p><p>The comments came after reports of chaos at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/passenger-buys-air-ticket-look-for-lost-luggage-dublin-airport-2022-7">Dublin Airport</a> prompted a parliamentary hearing into the situation. Representatives from Sky Handling Partner, ground-handling giant Swissport, Dublin Airport Authority, and Irish flag carrier Aer Lingus appeared before the parlimentary committee on Tuesday.</p><p>The groundhandling companies each manage about 10% of baggage at the airport while Aer Lingus is in charge of the remaining 80%, per TheJournal.ie. In all, the baggage handlers are dealing with about 4,200 misplaced or missing bags.</p><p>Aer Lingus CEO Lynne Embleton said the issue of lost luggage is particularly pronounced with flights from hubs such as London Heathrow and Amsterdam Schipol, the <a href="https://www.irishtimes.com/business/2022/07/26/aer-lingus-currently-dealing-with-about-1200-misplaced-bags/">Irish Times</a> reported. Passengers with connecting flights are at higher risk of losing their bags, she added. </p><p>The aviation industry is under fire for a summer of travel chaos amid flight disruptions, lost bags, and general messiness. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/weather-and-staffing-shortages-flight-cancellations-2022-6">Issues faced by airlines</a> include staff shortages, absences due to the ongoing pandemic, and bad weather.</p>

If I had known that, I would have put up a fight,' he said.</li></ul><p>Leaving a job, especially in a time of a labor shortage, can cause tensions between yourself and your former employer. </p><p>Rian Keogh from South Dublin, <keyword id="11956100" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ireland" source="Orion">Ireland</keyword>, was chasing his final paycheque from his bar job. He had been employed by Alfies, a bar and restaurant in the Irish capital, for two months when he decided to quit.</p><p>When he finally got paid - it was in a bucket full of coins.</p><p>Whilst the Irish student said he initially laughed when he saw the payment method, it was less amusing when he had to carry the bucket of 7,100 coins, weighing 66 pounds, when took the bus home.</p><p>Speaking to <a href="https://extra.ie/2021/09/15/must-see/dublin-bar-copper-coins-twitter">Extra.ie</a>, Keogh said that he had waited two weeks for his pay, and tried to be amenable by agreeing to accept the outstanding pay of €355 ($416) as cash in hand. </p><p>A bucket of coins isn't exactly what he meant. </p><p> The boss made a manager give the unorthodox payment and she was "really embarrassed," Keogh told <a href="https://extra.ie/2021/09/15/must-see/dublin-bar-copper-coins-twitter">Extra.ie</a>.</p><p>'I thought I legally had to take it but found out through Twitter that I actually didn't. If I had known that, I would have put up a fight,' he explained.</p><p>Irish law states - according to the <a href="http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/1998/act/38/section/10/enacted/en/html#sec10">Economic and Monetary Union Act of 1998</a> - that one person does not have to accept more than 50 coins in one transaction. </p><p>Alfie's owner Niall McMahon told the <a href="https://www.thejournal.ie/alfies-5-cent-coins-legal-expert-5550918-Sep2021/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">thejournal.ie</a> it was a "personal matter" and would rather not comment on the coin payment.</p><p>"It's between me and that employee and that's it," he reportedly said.</p>

Bar worker's final pay check was thousands of 5 cent coins in a bucket, say reports

<p>Gay rights activists are fuming at <keyword id="6391475" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Coca-Cola">Coca-Cola</keyword> after the soda giant removed a scene depicting a gay marriage celebration from the Irish version of a video ad that had included the scene in the versions shown in Norway and the United Kingdom.</p>
<p>The "Reasons to Believe" ad alternates images of anger and violence with those of peace and joy to communicate that while bad things do happen in the world, there are plenty of good things, as well. </p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPqtwPhrwi0">UK and Norwegian versions of the ad</a> showed a joyous wedding celebration of a marriage between two men, but the Irish gay publication <em>Eile Magazine</em> <a href="http://eile.ie/2013/12/29/coca-cola-ireland-omits-gay-marriage-scene-from-new-ad-campaign/">noticed the scene was missing from the ad</a> when it was brought to Ireland. Instead, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xo7Vyf3EyFw">the Irish version showed an interracial marriage</a>.</p>
<p>A Coca-Cola spokesperson <a href="http://businessetc.thejournal.ie/coca-cola-advert-gay-marriage-ireland-1242407-Dec2013/?utm_source=shortlink">told the Irish news publication <em>TheJournal.ie</em></a> that the Irish ad did not include the gay wedding celebration because gay marriage is not legal in Ireland.</p>
<p>"We wanted each ad to be relevant and valid for its own market," the spokesperson said.</p>
<p><em>Eile Magazine</em><em> </em>then reported that the footage used in the UK and Norway ads <a href="http://eile.ie/2013/12/30/update-irish-coca-cola-ad-civil-partnership-scene-not-valid-for-ireland/">actually came from a civil union in Australia</a>, where gay marriage is also not yet legal. Further, <em>Eile Magazine</em> said Coca-Cola's defense was "untrue" on the grounds gay marriage is not legal in the entirety of the United Kingdom because the practice is still prohibited in Scotland and Northern Ireland, even if it is allowed in England and Wales.</p>

Coca-Cola Cut This Gay Wedding Scene From Irish Ad

<p>She wrote home about her journey to a new life.</p>
<p>"The sailors say we have had a wonderful passage up to now," said Hart.</p>
<p>Hours later the ship struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sank, killing more than 1,500 people.</p>
<p>Hart survived and so did the letter, which is expected to sell for up to <span>£100,000 </span>($168,010) at an auction in London today. </p>
<p>The handwritten note on White Star Line notepaper was tucked inside the pocket of a sheepskin coat Hart's husband Benjamin gave her as he put Esther and their daughter Eva in a lifeboat.</p>
<p>The family had been traveling from England to Canada, where they planned to settle.</p>
<p>The letter includes a postscript from Eva Hart, then aged 7: "Heaps of love and kisses to all from Eva."</p>
<p>Benjamin Hart was among passengers and crew killed when the ship sank. Esther and Eva were rescued, along with some 700 others.</p>
<p>Esther Hart died in 1928. Eva Hart, who died in 1996, became a prominent Titanic survivor, critical of attempts to salvage the ship, which she considered a mass grave.</p>
<p>She described the voyage and her mother's letter, in an autobiography, "Shadow of the Titanic."</p>
<p>Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said the letter was "quite simply the jewel in the crown of Titanic manuscript ephemera."</p>
<p>Fascination with the Titanic remains strong a century after the disaster, and prices for memorabilia from the ship have soared in recent years.</p>
<p>In October, a violin believed to have been played as the doomed vessel sank sold for more than 1 million pounds.</p>

This Letter Written The Day The Titanic Sank Is Expected To Sell For $168,000

<p>Considering how many people use Twitter on a daily basis, chances are you've come across people who swear on it quite a lot, but how often does it actually happen?</p>
<p>Four researchers from Wright State University <a href="http://knoesis.org/library/download/wenbo_CSCW_2014_revised.pdf" target="_blank">decided to find out </a>by analysing 51 million tweets, all of which were randomly collected, and about 14 million users on Twitter.</p>
<p>They found that despite it being a public forum, people swear a lot. Even more than they would in real-life.</p>
<p>To start off, it's estimated that around 0.5 - 0.7 per cent of all the words we say are curse words. On Twitter, that rate was 1.15 per cent.</p>
<p>Explaining the reason <a href="http://www.fastcoexist.com/3026596/140-characters-of-fck-sht-and-ss-how-we-swear-on-twitter" target="_blank">why this was the case to Co.Exist </a>, Wenbo Wang, a PhD research student who led the study, said that "because of social media, people don't see each other. They can say things they wouldn't say in the physical world."</p>
<p>Predictably, angry tweets were most likely to contain cursing - 23.82 per cent of the angry tweets analysed had swears in them - while the majority of them happen at the start of the week.</p>

<p>The research was carried out by members of <a href="http://www.wright.edu/" target="_blank">Wright State University</a>, who presented the findings at the ACM Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing.</p>

<p>Proponents of the proposed law argued that it would alleviate <keyword id="6354802" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="depression">depression</keyword> by allowing more residents to socialize in pubs and then return home, <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2013/01/irish-county-legalizes-drunk-driving/">according to ABC News</a>.</p>
<p>Ireland is among the highest alcohol consuming countries in the European Union, <a href="http://www.rsa.ie/en/RSA/Road-Safety/Campaigns/Current-road-safety-campaigns/Drink-Driving/Drink-Driving---Fast-Facts/">according to the country's Road Safety Authority</a>.</p>
<p>In 2011, it <a href="http://www.thejournal.ie/lower-drink-drive-limits-to-be-introduced-this-week-261598-Oct2011/">lowered the legal limit for blood alcohol content from .08 to .05</a> — a lower limit than in the US and UK. This measure was widely credited with reducing <keyword id="51553" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="drunk-driving">drunk driving</keyword> incidents; the number of road deaths has fallen by more than 50 percent in the last five years, <a href="http://www.rsa.ie/Utility/News/2012/Road-Deaths-Fall-Below-200-for-the-First-Time/">according to the Road Safety Authority.</a></p>
<p>This new proposed law would have allowed residents to consume "two or three drinks" and still drive.</p>
<p>Councilor Danny Healy-Rae, who also owns a pub, argued that the measure would not lead to more drunk driving deaths on rural roads. He also said that it could actually reduce the risk of suicide. He <a href="http://www.thejournal.ie/kerry-councilor's-drink-driving-764005-Jan2013/">told TheJournal.ie</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">A lot of these people are living in isolated rural areas where there’s no public transport of any kind, and they end up at home looking at the four walls, night in and night out, because they don’t want to take the risk of losing their license...These characters are being isolated now at home, and a lot of them falling into depression.</p>
<p>The measure was passed by Kerry County's Council, five votes to three, while many councillors were absent or abstained from voting, <a href="http://www.thejournal.ie/danny-healy-rae-drink-driving-limit-764922-Jan2013/">The Journal reported</a>.</p>
<p>To go into effect, the measure needed the approval of the Department of Justice.</p>
<p>It was shot down by Justice Minister Alan Shatter, who called the idea "grossly irresponsible," according to the AP (<a href="http://news.yahoo.com/ireland-wont-ease-drunken-driving-law-farmers-164732815.html">via Yahoo!</a>).</p>
