A bunch of confusions over <keyword id="6356988" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="TRAI">Trai</keyword>’s orders, people willing to subscribe to <keyword id="6354504" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio">Reliance Jio</keyword> aren’t quite sure whether to go for it or not. Clearing all doubts, a senior official has confirmed that Reliance <keyword id="2003276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword> wouldn’t charge on voice calls for its own network. Speaking to <keyword id="6405564" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Times-Of-India">The Times of India</keyword>, the officer said, “The company has reconfirmed that it will never charge for a voice call on its network. The free-calling offer is clearly mentioned in all the 10 pre-paid and seven post-paid tariff plans Jio has filed with the telecom regulator Trai. Since zero-tariff on voice is not part of any promotional package, it won't be affected by change or withdrawal of such packages.” 
 
As per Trai regulations, a promotional plan cannot be extended beyond 90 days. Jio’s promotional plan ends on 3 December. 
As per the rule all operators need to submit a base tariff plan with the regulator. However, companies also offer several other pre-paid and post-paid packages, which are also submitted with the regulator. Jio has filed several plans with Trai where it has made all voice calls (local and STD) free at home and national roaming. 
 
While Trai’s mandate is to end free data by 3 December, Jio official assured that the free data would be available till December 31, as promised earlier.

 PM <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> referred to the widespread "renting" of <keyword id="2494045" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="jan-dhan">Jan Dhan</keyword> accounts. Preliminary investigation has thrown up the curious pattern of a massive number of deposits of Rs 49,000, the threshold to avoid furnishing PAN number needed for deposits of Rs 50,000 and above. 
 The Centre is aware of laundering on "industrial scale", and has responded by tweaking regulations - the biggest example being the changes in the <keyword id="6354751" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Income-Tax">Income Tax</keyword> Act to provide for stiff penalty and tax on undeclared amounts now surfacing in accounts. 
 Restrictions on withdrawals from Jan Dhan accounts is another example of what an official called improvisation triggered by the ingenuity of money launderers. "This is a typical cat-and-mouse game; regulatory dialectics, if you will, which is playing out, with the Centre trying to keep ahead of those trying to game the system," an official told the <keyword id="6356641" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="times-of-india">Times of India</keyword> who referred to numerous instances where employers, including educational institutions and hospitals, put money into accounts of employees and have taken post-dated cheques as security.

 “The situation is serious as candidates feel quality of life in Delhi-NCR has deteriorated with children falling sick and being confined to their homes. Joseph Devasia, MD, Antal International, India, told TOI that the situation spelt a major catastrophe on the talent front, adding a new dimension for HR towards retention. "In one week, we had two candidates refusing to travel to Delhi for interviews. This crisis has also affected professionals currently working in Delhi - we are seeing a spurt in applications to leave," said Devasia. 
 
Even a few months before, the situation was quite different. Encouraged by the lifestyle, many professionals from other metros would prefer the national capital over any other cities. Monster employment’s 2016 report has shows that the the annual growth momentum had witnessed maximum advancement in Delhi-NCR in the month, up 11 points to 26% from 15% in August 2016. However the recent rise in pollution level has catalysed the crisis. 
 <keyword id="274599" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sergey-Savchenko">Sergey Savchenko</keyword>, CEO, MTS India, told the leading newspaper, "From a business standpoint, if things continue unchecked, it is bound to have a negative impact on the health of employees, their families and also the customers, ultimately leading to an adverse impact on business activities across the value chain." 
 
To deal with the situation, several Delhi-based employers are giving employees an opportunity to work from home. Other arrangements have included company charter bus service and car pools to get people to office.

However, the <keyword id="49468" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Medical-Council-of-India">Medical Council of India</keyword> (MCI) prohibits pharmaceutical companies from offering incentives and freebies to doctors. 
 A flyer mentioned a 'Sankranti bonanza' was distributed at the event. It mentions that doctors ordering 100TCV (vaccine against typhoid) plus 100ROTA (vaccine against rota virus) can choose between a 'digital baby weighing machine' or 'stethoscope Class III' as free gifts," a doctor attending the 54th PEDICON conference told <keyword id="6405564" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Times-Of-India">The Times of India</keyword>. 
 The flyer carried no mention of any brands. The chief organiser of the event has denied any such ‘freebies’. Talking to TOI, Dr <keyword id="72164" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karunakara">Karunakara</keyword> said, “There’s no such thing. There are never any incentives for vaccines," he said. If someone buys vaccines in bulk, they may get a reduction in the overall price.” 
 Not just this edition, even during last year’s PEDICON, a similar incident happened when Hyderabad based <keyword id="149108" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Biotech">Bharat Biotech</keyword> had offered an iPhone 5S for every order of 200 vaccines of typhoid and rota.

While Apple waited, OnePlus and Xiaomi entered the market with their aggressive pricing and promise of flagship phones on affordable devices. In fact, OnePlus has the largest market share in India’s premium smartphone market, according to Counterpoint. This year, in particular, was tough on companies with the global slowdown in smartphone sales to which Apple was not immune. India’s weakening Rupee, which made imports more expensive, only made the situation worse. Apple’s delay in adding new features to its phones and taking its time to catch up to tech trends has also dulled the excitement that usually used to surround the launch of a new iPhone. In comparison, the constant launch of Android phones and the variety of their features has begun to seem more appealing to users. Brighter pastures ahead The government didn’t relax its rules for Apple but did so for single brand retailers at large. Either way, it now means that the company can open its signature <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/apple-store-to-launch-in-mumbai-soon/articleshow/69246612.cms">‘Apple Stores’</a> in the country. Reportedly, the first one is scheduled to come up at the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/indias-first-apple-store-opening-in-the-bandra-kurla-complex-in-mumbai/articleshow/71442026.cms">BKC Complex in Mumbai sometime next year</a>. Also, Apple is finally among the top ten smartphone brands in the country. According to Counterpoint, this is due to the price cuts on the iPhone XR and demand for the newly launched iPhone 11.  Dainik Jagran continues to remain the top most read newspaper across India, despite seeing a dip than the last two quarters, with a Total Readership (TR) of 70,430,000 in IRS Q3 2019 and Average Issue Readership of 17,496,000. The Times of India is the only English daily to make it in the Top 10 list. On other hand, amongst English dailies, The Times of India leads the Mumbai market with a TR of 2,776,000 and AIR of 1,292,000, whereas in Delhi, Hindustan Times surpassed the former with a TR of 2,114,000 and AIR of 1,076,000. India Today remains the top read magazine in the country and Malayala Manorama is the largest read regional daily.

<ul><li><keyword id="80487" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword>'s will potentially be bidding to acquire more than 51% stake in <keyword id="6354742" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> by investing up to $8-10 billion. </li><li>Other major investors include <keyword id="163404" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword> (23% stake), Tiger Global (20% stake) and <keyword id="6356837" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="naspers">Naspers</keyword> (16.6% stake).</li><li>SoftBank is willing to pump in an additional $3-4 billion, if Flipkart opts to pursue <keyword id="18635" type="LOCATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>'s offer instead of Walmart.</li></ul> Despite Amazon’s bid to buy a 60% stake in India’s Flipkart, reports say the deal will go in Walmart’s favour. Talks of Walmart wanting to acquire a massive stake of Flipkart have been on since February. And with that news, a number of companies, including Google and Amazon, seem to want a piece of Flipkart’s pie. The Bentonville-based retail giant, Walmart, has been itching to expand its online presence into the remaining Asian markets. If this deal materialises -- its biggest e-commerce bet anywhere globally -- will also trigger a re-rating of its stock market valuation, which is currently second only to Amazon. A source told <keyword id="6356641" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Times-of-India">Times of India</keyword> (TOI) that “the shareholding agreement with Walmart is still to be signed. But it is unlikely that Amazon will come in now. Walmart and Flipkart are agreeing on the deal terms, for now.” Sources with knowledge of the proceedings told <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/companies/walmart-nears-flipkart-deal-amazon-push-fails/articleshow/64010460.cms?from=mdr" data-type="tilCustomLink">TOI</a> that SoftBank has been favouring the merger with Amazon instead of Walmart. For this, it is also willing to pump in an additional $3-4 billion, in case Flipkart opts to pursue Amazon's offer instead of Walmart. While most other investors are keen on Walmart’s cashout deal, SoftBank, wants to maintain its 20% stake in the combined <keyword id="6412936" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="flipkart-amazon">Flipkart-Amazon</keyword> entity. The additional amount can in-turn be deployed to buy shares from smaller investors. Flipkart has been valued at around $20 billion and its major investors include SoftBank (23% stake), Tiger Global (20% stake), Naspers (16.6% stake) and <keyword id="144381" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Accel-Partners">Accel Partners</keyword> (one of the early investors in Flipkart that hold less than 10% stake). However, this idea does not fly with the other major investors who believe -- and perhaps rightly so -- that the potential merger with Amazon would not go past the Competition Commission of India (CCI). The CCI, founded in 2003, is a statutory body responsible for enforcing The Competition Act, 2002 which aims at preventing activities that have a significantly adverse effect on competition in India. Plus, the merger with Amazon would potentially irk the different sections of the trading community. However, SoftBank maintains, Flipkart and Amazon combined will only manage a mere 1.5% stake in the broader Indian retailing industry and therefore is unlikely to run into regulatory hurdles. The Japanese company’s founder and chairman Masayoshi Son saw the potential merger between the two e-commerce behemoths as a way to get his company a bigger play in India’s promising e-commerce market. Just last year, it invested an additional $2.5 billion in Flipkart. According to a <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/companies/softbank-likely-to-part-sell-flipkart-stake-to-walmart/articleshow/63291759.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Times of India article</a> from 14 March, Walmart's potential bid to acquire more than 51% stake by investing up to $8-10 billion in Flipkart may just nudge SoftBank to part-sell its shares. However, Masayoshi Son told TOI a few days ago, “We are involved in discussions with key shareholders and the management. Either way, we are happy. It is nice to have good offers and we are always open to discussing different options and are always flexible for a good return and success of the company.” All this aside, another source said that the Flipkart board already agreed to Walmart’s offer a few days ago, thereby possibly thwarting Amazon’s intention to sweep in and win the game.

Walmart may edge out Amazon in the race to buy holding stake in India’s Flipkart

Ecommerce giant <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> is applying for the media rights to broadcast <keyword id="6354831" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Premier-League">Indian Premier League</keyword> (<keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword>). According to a news report, this move is aimed at strengthening Amazon’s footing in India. 
 <keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword> is satisfied with the response it has been drawing so far after it announced on last Sunday the sale of the IPL rights - broadcast and digital for ten and five years respectively - to be sold individually or in a bundle for the next designated period, as per The Times Of India. 
 Amazon founded by <keyword id="191583" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jeff-Bezos">Jeff Bezos</keyword> which has more than a dozen global subsidiaries, is the first among interested overseas parties that has picked up the Invitation To Tender. Sources tracking developments say BCCI expects the global market to show keen interest in the digital rights of the IPL and Amazon picking the tender at the first available opportunity is an indicator of the same. "Everybody's talking about the possibility of the IPL rights battle being between Star and Sony. But our guess is there are going to be surprises in store," a source in the know of things told TOI.

Once arch rivals, Vodafone, Bharati <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> and Idea Cellular have now teamed up against <keyword id="2003276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword> and complained to the government that latter’s predatory pricing has been eating up in their revenues. To make sure, the government pays heed to their outrage, the three telecom operators claimed their incompetence to invest in future technology and create jobs. The top players in the industry had met a government panel, which aims to analyse the losses in the industry. <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword> backed Jio has been accused of providing cellular services at ‘too low’ a cost, which is responsible for decline in the revenue generation. According to a <keyword id="6356641" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="times-of-india">Times of India</keyword> report, the worst affected Airtel, which has seen a severe contraction in profitability post the aggressive launch of services by Jio in September last year, said that the return on capital employed (ROCE) had dropped down to "perilously lower levels" and is "highly likely to be negative" if relief is not provided. Airtel said losses to the industry will also restrict the government's ability to earn from the sector. Its earnings will come down by Rs 10,000 crore. "Consolidation/ reduced investments will result in loss of direct/ indirect employment." The companies have sought to increase charge for terminating a call on their networks to be increased from the existing 14 paise per minute. "The IUC rate of 14 paise is lower than actual cost. In order to make this financially viable, it is critical that traffic between operators is symmetrical," Airtel told <keyword id="6371459" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="toi">TOI</keyword>. "IUC needs to be correctly determined to prevent predatory voice-pricing environment. Aggressive tariffs in voice and data have resulted in a scenario of pricing below cost with every operator," Idea told TOI, seeking the fixation of a floor price for voice and data prices. However Jio has refused to the allegations. It believes that lack of investments by them in new technologies and mounting debt are making the other rivals outrageous.
