After a deal with Meredith Corporation to sell <keyword id="220415" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Time-Inc-">Time Inc.</keyword> fell apart, <keyword id="52712" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="time-warner">Time Warner</keyword> has <a href="http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/06/fate-of-four-time-inc-magazines-are-an-issue-in-talks-with-meredith/">decided to spin off the unit</a> and its iconic magazines (<keyword id="6360866" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="time">Time</keyword>, Sports Illustrated, Fortune and Money) into an independent, publicly traded company. 
Time Inc. also owns magazines like People, InStyle, and Entertainment Weekly.

Meet Times Prime, the Indian subscription service that offers privileges across 20+ Brands

<ul><li>Using different time zones for northeastern states in India may improve their productivity. </li><li>Even though the sun rises and sets early in these states, they follow the <keyword id="1650458" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-standard-time">Indian Standard Time</keyword> (IST) that results in poor sleep. </li><li>The states suffer a loss of daylight. Moreover, the problem is during winters when the region has shorter days leading to more electricity consumption. </li></ul>India can increase the productivity of all the North-eastern states by having two different time zones, according to <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/5ojttz8d9leco4n/jagnani_jmp.pdf?dl=0">a recent scientific study. </a> The study authored by Maulik Jagnani, a researcher at Cornell University -- has <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/global-economics/single-time-zone-costs-india-rs-29000-crore-impairs-education-wages-study#gs.bMyZ0vYl">suggested</a> that using a different time zones for Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to set their clocks on an hour ahead of the Indian Standard time. According to Jagnani, a “back-of-the-envelope estimates” suggest that India incurs annual human capital costs of roughly $4.1 billion or 0.2 percent of nominal GDP [gross domestic product] due to the existing policy regulating <keyword id="70843" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="time-zone">time zone</keyword> boundaries. Currently, India follows a single time zone — The Indian Standard Time (IST) that is 5.30 hours ahead of the Coordinated Universal Time (UCT, 0.00). While India follows a single time zone across the country, the sun rises and sets early than rest of the country. This causes loss of several daylight hours. The problem is intensity in winters when the region has shorter days leading to more electricity consumption. Since the sun rises and sets at different hours in the country, students are likely to get poor sleep, affecting their primary school and middle school. India is among those countries which neither uses multiple time zones nor uses daylight saving rather it has set out a single time zone across the country. India earlier had two different time zones that made it easier for the traders to efficiently use daylight. One easy way for India to boost productivity is bringing back time zones , says study

<keyword id="52712" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="time-warner">Time Warner</keyword> is to spin off its magazine unit <keyword id="6360866" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="time">Time</keyword> Inc into a separate, publicly traded company after talks to sell the publisher behind People and Sports Illustrated fell through.
The US media giant confirmed late on Wednesday that Time Inc would be relisted by the end of a year as a new company expected to incorporate Britain's biggest consumer magazines publisher, IPC Media.
Time Warner's move came after <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/greenslade/2013/feb/14/time-warner-magazines?INTCMP=SRCH" title="">talks to sell most Time Inc titles to US lifestyle publisher Meredith</a> apparently broke down. The Time Inc chief executive Laura Lang will be replaced by a new boss when the spin-off is complete.
The Time Warner chairman and chief executive, Jeff Bewkes, said the move would allow the New York-based media company to concentrate on its film and TV business.
He said in a statement: "After a thorough review of options, we believe that a separation will better position both Time Warner and Time Inc.
"A complete spin-off of Time Inc provides strategic clarity for Time Warner Inc, enabling us to focus entirely on our television networks and film and TV production businesses, and improves our growth profile.
"Time Inc will also benefit from the flexibility and focus of being a standalone public company and will now be able to attract a more natural stockholder base. As we saw with the prior spin-offs of Time Warner Cable and AOL, we expect the separation will create additional value for our stockholders."
In a statement released after Time Warner's announcement, Meredith confirmed it had held talks to purchase the company's lifestyle, style and entertainment titles "at Time Warner's initiation".
Stephen Lacy, chairman and chief executive of Meredith, indicated that a potential deal in the future had not been ruled out. He said: "There are natural synergies between our two portfolios; however, we respect Time Warner's decision and certainly remain open to continuing a dialogue on how our companies might work together on future opportunities."
Time Inc has been gradually trimmed back by Time Warner, including recent moves to shed 6% of its 8,000 global staff, prompting speculation it was being pruned ahead of a sale.
The company began talks with Meredith about taking most of Time's lifestyle titles, such as InStyle and Real Simple, in a deal that reportedly valued Time Inc at $1.75bn, but without the flagship titles Sports Illustrated, Time, Fortune and Money.
It is understood that the sale would have included at least some of London-based IPC Media titles, which has a robust lifestyle division including Woman's Own and the joint venture Marie Claire. IPC is also home to What's on TV, NME, Nuts and several specialist titles.
A spokeswoman for IPC said on Thursday: "As you will see, Time Warner expects to complete the transaction by the end of the year. So it's business as usual at IPC and we have nothing else to add."

Edward Snowden <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/edward-snowden-for-times-person-of-the-year-2013-11">was at the top spot for the public vote recently</a>, but now that seems to have changed and he's slunk down to sixth.

That top five certainly paints a strange picture of the past year's events, but remember, Time's "Person of the Year" is given to whoever "most influenced the news this year for better or worse" (previous winners include Hitler, Stalin, and "You"), and the public vote (which appears to play little to no role in the final decision) <a href="http://www.dailydot.com/news/time-person-of-the-year-miley-cyrus-rigged/">has often been rigged</a>.

The film is making all kinds of right noises for having introduced some really innovative concepts, simplifying theories and executing them to perfection. Why would one month on a new planet mean seven years on earth? And why would the clock at the bottom of the ocean go slower than the one ticking away in the atmosphere? Time on earth is a notion of general relativity as explained by Albert Einstein. 
 
In that case, what can the lesser mortals do? Clearly, time is running out. What would be the best option to choose when it happens often? <keyword id="153102" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="theory-of-relativity">Theory of relativity</keyword> in some sense applies to us on an everyday basis. How else would you perfectly understand clocks running slower when things are placed close to the object which happens to be the source of gravity? 
 
Now, get this clear. You have been assigned a project. You pick the best of talents to work on it. Time is abundant at this point. You get engrossed in the details of the project. Time loses track. It seems like you have a lifetime to sort things out and work on it to perfection. You are on a different planet now. 
 
But in a jerky move, you get transported to earth. You leave that constellation and come back to where you belong. Office space crawls on you, gnaws at you. Time spent on setting the project right has now been proved as ‘time lost’. You don’t know where to turn and what to do. Organiser, the culprit: Ditch your smartphone and get down to flow charts. Get down to basics and start with paper and pen. What your gadgets do is that they create an illusion of making you efficient while you get all jumbled up in your head. When time starts running out, your gadgets don’t help you. It’s that SOS corner in your brain that comes to your rescue. So, plan well with smallest of details so that you are AWARE of what you have on hand and how much time you would have to finish it. Work backwards, it always works well. 
 
Account everything: This is not just about money, though money is also included in this. Team building activities may actually help you get through the project faster. We all know this; a happy team is a productive team. Account for the smallest of time spent in keeping the team together and you will know time is well within your control. 
 
Smallest details; large scale planning: Don’t panic at the first sign of delay. Just check if that is bringing up an issue that could have been time consuming at any point later. Think through and stay calm. Understanding the problem is also saving on time at some point later. Larger picture should always be before you. 
 
Plan and prioritize: This has been said a million times in the past and will continue to be said a million times in the future too. Planning is about seeing smallest of the small things that need your attention. Factor in most probable delays and emergencies halting the work. Create a second line that will take charge when something goes off track. 
 
Tackle easy ones first: Most of us believe doing the tough things first gets us through easy things that can be done at any point. Do things that you are good at doing first, and then tackle tough challenges. Being the best is taking just one step at a time!

This marks <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/when-does-daylight-savings-time-2013-end-2013-10">the end of daylight saving time (DST)</a> when we push our clocks forward in the spring so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less.
But there are people who wish we never had daylight saving time in the first place, and want to abolish it.
Daylight saving time was originally started to save coal during World War I - so that people who normally wake up hours after the sunrise and stayed up late after dark burning energy to light their homes would have more daylight hours later in the evening, therefore saving energy.
A March 2012 national survey by <a href="http://www.rasmussenreports.com/">Rasmussen Reports</a> found that 45% of American adults think daylight savings is worth the hassle, but nearly as many - 40% - disagree. Fifteen percent are undecided.
What's the problem with DST?
The argument that DST saves energy has been criticized. According to Mr. Michael Downing, the author of "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Spring-Forward-Annual-Madness-Daylight/dp/1593760531" target="_blank">Spring Forward: The Annual Madness of Daylight Saving Time</a>," congressional studies on the energy savings of daylight saving time haven't shown it to actually decrease energy use.
There's even an advocacy group, the folks behind <a href="http://www.standardtime.com/">Standardtime.com</a>, who want to abolish daylight saving time altogether. Energy-saving claims are "unproven," they write: "If we are saving energy, let's go year-round with daylight saving time. If we are not saving energy, let's drop daylight saving time!"
Early studies on the energy savings of daylight saving time didn't show it to actually decrease energy use. A more recent study in 2008 did show a small amount of energy savings after we extended DST.
According to the <a href="http://www.csmonitor.com/Environment/2013/1030/Daylight-saving-time-ends-Does-it-save-energy" target="_blank">Christian Science Monitor</a>:
Most advocates cite a 2008 report to Congress by the Department of Energy which showed that total electricity savings from the extended daylight saving period amounted to 1.3 terawatt-hours, or 0.03 percent of electricity consumption over the year. That's a tiny number. But if electricity costs 10 cents per kilowatt, that means an estimated $130 million in savings each year.
Sometimes, DST seems to increase energy use: In Indiana, when daylight saving time was implemented statewide in 2006, <a href="http://www.nber.org/papers/w14429" target="_blank">researchers saw</a> that while people used less electricity for light, those gains were canceled out by people who used more air conditioning during the early evenings (for example, 6 p.m. would feel more like 5 p.m. when the sun is still shining bright in the summer and their homes haven't had the chance to cool off).
DST also increases gasoline consumption, something the petroleum industry has known since 1930. This is probably because evening activities increase - since it stays light out longer - and evening activities usually use gasoline.
The lack of synchronization with the European daylight saving time change costs the airline industry $147 million a year, <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/11/daylight-savings-time-is-terrible-heres-a-simple-plan-to-fix-it/281075/" target="_blank">according to The Atlantic</a>. There are also <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/health-and-economic-effects-of-daylight-saving-time-2013-10">health issues with the change</a>, including possible increases in heart attacks and accidents.
Why keep it?
More evening light means that people go out and spend money. <a href="http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=7779869" target="_blank">Downing told NPR</a> that this is in the form of shopping and even going out and playing a round of golf - the golf industry told Congress that an extra month of daylight saving was worth $200 million in 1986. The BBQ industry said extending DST would boost sales by $100 million.
Extending daylight saving time to November also helps the Halloween industry - the longer kids can trick-or-treat, the more candy you need to buy.
A world divided
Other areas of the world have abolished daylight saving time, or never had it to begin with. Here's the breakdown:

This decision is left up to the individual counties. Choosing not observe DST in a county where nearby cities do can also be problematic. 
This leads to some funky time zone borders (imagine being in that DST-free island in Arizona!). And daylight saving just adds to that confusion.
An alternate plan
Standardtime.com has a strange suggestion: have only two <keyword id="1330083" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="time-zones">time zones</keyword> in the continental U.S. and have them be two hours apart, an idea that The Atlantic calls "<a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/11/daylight-savings-time-is-terrible-heres-a-simple-plan-to-fix-it/281075/" target="_blank">a simple plan to fix [DST]</a>": Compare that to the current state of time zones in the U.S., which are broken into four time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific time, all one hour different. That means that the time in California is three hours earlier than the time in New York.<div class="KonaFilter image-container full"><div class="image on-image"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:US-Timezones.svg">public domain</a>U.S. time zones. The grey-hashed areas don't observe DST.</div></div>These four time zones exist so that areas in the east of each time zone get sunrise at about the same time. With standardtime.com's system the coasts would only be two hours apart, facilitating travel and meeting times, but sunrise and sun set times would be drastically different for many areas of the nation.
That's because the sun hits the eastern side of a time zone first and the western side about an hour later in the day in our approximately hour-long time zones. Extending the eastern time zone into the middle of the country would mean sunrise would happen very late in the morning.
For example, today the sun rose in New York City at 7:27 a.m. EDT and in Chicago it rose at 7:24 a.m. CDT. If we were in the same time zone, that would have been 8:24 "Eastern Time" in Chicago and even later in more western areas of the country. For example, sunrise in Lubbock, Texas was at 8:07 CDT. In standardtime.com's two-time-zone plan, that would mean the sun would rise after 9:00 a.m. "Eastern Time." We think this would make it pretty tough to start the working day on time.
Bottom line: This plan is dumb and won't fix anything. Since DST doesn't seem to offer major energy-saving benefits, and could even cost money, we should probably get rid of our twice-yearly time change ritual. Counties should pick one time zone and stick to it year-round, and we probably shouldn't drastically change our current time-zone breakdown.

The not-so-subtle message is that the recovery has been a sham perpetrated by banksters and that we're on the verge of collapse "all over again."
This has been the standard line since day 1 one of the recovery, that it's all a fraud and that it will all go busto any day now.
Get really worried if you see the skepticism and anger disappear.
