Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘<keyword id="3003094" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startup-India">Startup India</keyword>’ initiative kick-started at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, and <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword> bigwigs hope on big tickets announcements by the prime minister. 
 
With the Startup India plan, Modi wants to have a Silicon Valley-type environment in India, giving wings to entrepreneurial dreams of Indians and boosting innovation and employment. 
 Bigwigs like <keyword id="357983" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Masayoshi-Son">Masayoshi Son</keyword>, founder and CEO SoftBank; Travis Kalanick, founder of Uber; and Adam Neumann, founder of WeWork are in Delhi and interacting with startup owners and entrepreneurs on future actions and growth of startups in India. 
 
Modi is expected to announce a roadmap and policies for startups in India. 
 
“We feel a lot of startups fail and so ease of starting and shutting down a company is very important and then the ease of raising money is crucial to success of startups," Venkatesh Shukla, president of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), told ET.

Digital payments leader <keyword id="6357940" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Paypal">PayPal</keyword>’s fifth edition of the Incubator Challenge is back and the company is inviting application for early-stage financial technology companies, including <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> across the country specializing in loyalty, machine learning, big data and logistics, among others to compete for a spot in the PayPal Incubator. 
 
The challenge was launched in 2013 in partnership with The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE). 
 
“Enabling and co-creating with our ecosystem has been core to PayPal’s presence in India. The PayPal Incubator, with its state-of-the-art facilities backed by our 17 years of global experience and expertise in the sector, will help budding start-ups compete in a very competitive business environment,” said Guru Bhat – GM Technology &amp; Head of Engineering– PayPal. 
 
Interested startups can apply for the PayPal Incubator at https://www.paypal-incubator.com/india/apply/. Applications will close on January 31, 2017. Successful applicants will be contacted to undergo two rounds of pitching before the final companies are selected by a jury panel. The panel will include senior leaders from PayPal as well as prominent venture capitalists and entrepreneurs in India. 
 
To date, the PayPal incubator has hosted ten startups and provides access to global mentors, angel investors and venture capitalists.

Shout out to fintech startups! PayPal incubator challenge is here

The silicon valley of India, Bengaluru, is too noisy and and perhaps even over-hyped. We aren’t saying this, but the start-ups based out of that region claim as much. So, what are they doing about the situation? A few of them are quietly shifting their base from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=coimbatore">Bengaluru to Coimbatore</a> to avoid the hullaballoo of the state capital and focus on quality. Some of them include Dhruv Kumar of online medical advice platform, iCliniq who shifted to Coimbatore 3 years ago after his 2 year stint in Bengaluru. 
 
"I wanted to be out of all the noise and focus on building a quality product," said Kumar. "There are events all the time and the place is flooded with funding stories. Those days, we thought we were a tech startup and did not focus enough on the health and business side." 
 
A much-focussed development and the wait for the product to mature have been rewarding for him. iCliniq now has more than 1,000 doctors on its platform and they have so far addressed tens of thousands of health issues. It gets a large portion of revenue from the US and Europe. 
 
"Entrepreneurs are celebrated in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/indian-govt-wants-more-indian-airlines-to-take-up-international-routes-says-civil-aviation-minister/articleshow/43165558.cms">Coimbatore</a>," the 27-year-old told ET, cheerfully. The cotton-growing region saw its first industries in ginning and moved on to make garments, machinery, automobile and many ancillary products. It is often called the 'Manchester of South India', drawing comparison with the first industrial city. 
 
Several young entrepreneurs like Kumar, who started up in Bengaluru are shifting to Coimbatore. Do-PartTime, a part-time job discovery portal, is another example and one of the reasons for the shift was talent retention. "Every company has a dynamic workforce, which frequently shifts, and a static workforce with loyalty. In a place like Coimbatore, the teams stick around," said Kumar. 
 
Coimbatore has pleasant weather conditions like Bengaluru and is seeing its fair share of startup activity. The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Know-why-GAP-HM-chose-Delhi-over-Mumbai-and-Bangalore/articleshow/47328005.cms">Coimbatore c</a>hapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), a non-profit consortium that promotes entrepreneurship, has identified 47 active startups. 
 
One of the catalysts for them is the educational institutions in the region that have helped establish a sound technical ecosystem, TiE-Coimbatore President Selvakumar said. 
 
There are five incubation centres in and around the city, almost all of them set up by a technical education institution. PSG STEP, the incubation arm of PSG Institute of Technology, was established in 1998, much before any other college, including IIM Ahmedabad, did so. 
 
The centre incubates startups in IT, electronics and mechanical streams from Coimbatore. NanoTechnolgy was added to the list recently.

Move over Bengaluru, Coimbatore is the new start-up city

<ul><li>As many as 92% of Indian youth are unaware of online placement services. </li><li>Over 38% of young professionals want to pursue entrepreneurship.</li><li>88% of youth without a technical diploma or certificate.</li><li>56% of the employed youth in the surveyed sample considered their education and/or vocational training adequate. </li></ul><keyword id="6358907" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="unemployment">Unemployment</keyword> and job crisis is one of the major issues of the Indian economy. As of today, about a million employees are at the brink of job loss in the auto sector, and many more are already unemployed. But it’s not just the lack of avenues to seek jobs that’s causing the crisis. There is also lack of awareness, preparedness, skills, training and, of course, opportunity. As many as 92% of Indian youth are unaware of online placement services, according to a new survey launched at the 6th Annual edition of India Education Entrepreneurship Day (IEED) 2019 hosted by TiE Delhi-NCR in New Delhi. The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) is a non-profit organisation devoted to entrepreneurs in all industries, at all stages, from incubation, throughout the entrepreneurial lifecycle. "TiE's mission has always been to gather major ecosystem stakeholders under one roof with the overarching aim of driving the country towards a progressive future," said Geetika Dayal, Executive Director, TiE Delhi-NCR, who hosted the event. The problem begins right from the point of getting the facts right. According to Sabina Dewan, President &amp; Executive Director, Just Jobs Network, over 12 million people enter the labour force in India every year while the data <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2018/may/22/only-475-million-join-workforce-annually-in-india-not-12-million-as-claimed-1817846.html">shows actual numbers to be less than 5 million</a>. The youth unemployment rate in India is three times that of the overall unemployment, according to the survey. “Our objective is to bring some of the pressing challenges in the Indian education and employment ecosystem to the notice of policy-makers, market participants, and other key stakeholders,” said Rahil Rangwala, Program Director, Michael &amp; Susan Dell Foundation, a non-profit organisation that works on training poor children in underdeveloped countries for future employment. The organisation was set by the founder of Dell in 1999. Further, about 56% of the respondents asserted that their education and/or vocational training was inadequate to improve their prospects of landing a better, high-value job. “Most people believe that obtaining a three-month-long training or skilling session will compensate for years of education and experience. This is preposterous. Education and skill development need to be considered in a continuum.”said Dewan. It also revealed that 38% of young professionals surveyed want to pursue entrepreneurship. On the other hand, 88% of respondents think they lack a technical diploma or certificate.

The many pain points exposed by India’s jobs crisis

<ul><li>Dream11 founder Harsh Jain shared his plight with finding investors in the first few years of his startup that is now a unicorn.</li><li>At the TiE Global Summit 2019, Jain said that the first 150 investors refused to invest in Dream11 but he learnt a lot from those rejections.</li><li>It raised $110 million from Tencent. It turned unicorn (startup with a valuation of over $1 billion) in November 2019 </li><li>Its popularity skyrocketed after IPL and ICC signed them as the official partner.</li></ul>In 2009, Harsh Jain and Bhavit Sheth were living a fantasy. Those were times when iPhones were just becoming popular and smartphones are not all-pervading like they are –right now. Even for those who owned such phones, 2G powered data did not come cheap. Yet, the Founders of Dream11 were trying to raise money for a fantasy cricket game shaped after EPL, after IPL was launched a year back. “We had 150 people say ‘No’ before we got to our first funding. Perseverance is what it takes. Every single no came with a why, it taught me something about our business and how to grow,” Jain said at the TiE Global Summit (TGS). In a session chaired by Business Insider at the Summit — an annual event which showcased India's vibrant startup ecosystem — Jain shared the journey of his startup that introduced '<keyword id="6370198" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="fantasy-gaming">fantasy gaming</keyword>' as a business to India. The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) is a global not-for-profit organisation founded in 1992 by a bunch of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs who had roots in the subcontinent. TiE helps startups with mentoring, networking, education, funding, and incubation. Dream11 founder Harsh Jain was a headliner at this year's edition of the TGS. The Dream journey Within nine years, Dream11 raised $110 million from Tencent. It turned unicorn (startup with a valuation of over $1 billion) in November 2019 after a secondary investment from Steadview Capital, an Asia-focused alternative asset manager. Its popularity skyrocketed first after IPL and ICC both signed them on as the official partner. It now has 75 million users on its platform and has a robust model to go with - as it earns 15-20% of a gamer’s winnings. Jain believes that there is a lot of potential ahead for fantasy gaming. “India is a large market to address where 700 million people expected to use sports online in India in the next few years,” he said. Other than providing a platform for gaming, Jain believes that their offering provides with something more--- a way to overcome tediousness. “Indians are bored that's why they keep looking at their phones. Suddenly because of Jio everyone has data and access, we need to engage them and provide entertainment. The reason why Dream11 is popular because we give that on something they love – sports,” he said. ‘I heard 150 noes before first funding’- reveals one of India's newest unicorns Dream11

<ul><li>SpotDraft recently raised $1.5 million in a pre-series A from Binny Bansal’s 021 Capital, Freshworks CEO Girish Mathrubootham, among others. </li><li>The legal tech startup offers contract creation, management and analysis. </li><li>Indian unicorn entrepreneurs are turning into investors with a purpose – to help startups scale. </li></ul>A small Indian legal tech startup has been able to do what many early-stage entrepreneurs only dream of. SpotDraft has recently raised $1.5 million in a pre-series A round from Binny Bansal’s 021 Capital and several marquee investors like Girish Mathrubootham (Freshworks), Peeyush Ranjan (VP Engineering, Google Inc – former CTO Flipkart) and Indus Khaitan (Chief of Growth, Chargebee) among others. SpotDraft, which started off as an online platform to help people create contracts and automate their invoices, has evolved to offer contract creation, contract management and contract analysis. For example, it claims it helps businesses create a solid legally-binding contract, which they can negotiate and explore online. Its Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence-enabled services allow them to share with entrepreneurs the good, bad and ugly aspects about the contract. It can quickly help identify compliant and non-compliant clauses of a contract. Shashank Bijapur, CEO and co-founder, SpotDraft spoke to Business Insider to spill the secrets on how they convinced the marquee investors to place their bets on a startup which is just about two years old. According to Bijapur, what worked for them was the value proposition of the business. “At a high level, the problem statement and solution were very clear. Legal as a problem is ripe for disruption making way for complete automation of legal processes that a business has to undergo,” he said. Legal paperwork is one of the many hurdles that businesses and entrepreneurs face, especially in a market like India where these tend to be time-consuming. Compliance is also increasingly becoming an important exercise, as regulations become more complex. It also helped that Bijapur, a Harvard law grad and Wall Street lawyer and his co-founder Madhav Bhagat, a Carnegie Mellon graduate and Google, New York employee, had their background to vouch for them as well. With the funds raised from this round, it is looking to focus on growth in terms of team, sales and development. In the near future, it plans to expand geographies to Europe, US and Middle East, while also looking to grow revenue 10X over the next 12-14 months. The investment is also the latest example of Indian unicorn founders turning into evangelists for startups in the country, through mentoring and investments. Many aren’t just looking at being moneybags but also contribute to the success of other startups. “As founders, the access to capital may not have been as difficult as finding the right people for your business – people who can take us from 0 to 1. The value that these investors brought on board is immense and even before we were given the term sheet, we were introduced to half a dozen clients,” said Bijapur. Currently, the startup has over a dozen multi-national corporations as well as 1,000 SMEs as customers. Why India’s Unicorn founders backed this barely two-year-old legal tech startup

Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> is expected to announce long-awaited policy fixes aimed at making it easier to build, invest in, and shut down startups in India, people aware of the government's thinking told ET. 

	According to an official involved in the planning for the visit, the Prime Minister's Office has sought a list of issues and possible solutions from some key representatives in the startup sector.
 

	The wish list has about 10 items, and right on top are recommendations to make it easier for investors to back Indian startups by either abolishing capital gains tax on profits from startup investing or keeping the rate low. "The PMO has indicated that the prime minister would announce decisions on a few items while he is here. We don't know yet what it would be. The push is on capital gains tax," said the official.
 <keyword id="6357097" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="venture-capital">Venture capital</keyword> investors based in <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword>, are among the top backers of Indian startups. Since 2013, venture capital funds have invested $6.3 billion (Rs 40,000 crore) in Indian startups, helping establish India as one of the world's prominent hubs for entrepreneurship. Outside the United Nations headquarters in <keyword id="6355838" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="New-York">New York</keyword> on Thursday, Vikas Swarup, the external affairs ministry spokesman, made clear what was on top of Modi's mind during his trip. "Startups, innovation and manufacturing are the thrust areas of this visit," he told reporters. The policy announcements are likely to be made during the 'Start-up Konnect' event cohosted by The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) and software industry grouping <keyword id="6372077" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nasscom">Nasscom</keyword>. This session — one of the three major engagements for Modi in Silicon Valley — will be attended by founders of startups such as <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>, Zomato, Paytm and InMobi as well as leading venture capitalists and angel investors of Indian origin based in the Bay area, including Kanwal Rekhi, Raju Reddy and Vinod Khosla. Those lobbying for policy reform argue that in the event of a successful exit from a startup, there is no certainty about how much tax should be paid and how long the assessment will take. The wish list includes a reduction in the compliance burden, elimination of discrimination in public procurement and making share swaps non-taxable. 

	Another long-standing demand of the industry which remains unfulfilled despite being announced in the Budget is the ease of setting up and shutting down a company.
 

	"We are hoping that there will be some policy announcements; they are just very long overdue," said Sharad Sharma, cofounder of software products think tank iSPIRT.
 

	Nasscom has also been sending representations to the government to address some of these issues. "We have again suggested that there needs to be a mechanism which makes it easier for companies to set up, operate and shut shop," said Sangeeta Gupta, senior vicepresident of Nasscom.

Guwahati, May 6 () Multinational companies lookingto move out of China should consider Assam, with its abundantnatural resources, strategic location and robust industrialinfrastructure, as their destination for setting up productionfacilities in India, state Industries Minister Chandra MohanPatowary said on Wednesday."Many American, Japanese and Korean companies arecontemplating to shift their production facilities from Chinato India and we hope to woo these firms to set up productionfacilities in Assam," Patowary told reporters here.The state government has urged the Department forPromotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), InvestIndia, the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), the US-India Business Council and the US Chamber of Commerce toadvise the firms in this regard, he said.The Industries and Commerce Department has engaged arenowned firm to assess the impact of the lockdown on theindustrial sector in Assam and suggest a policy framework toattract industries that are planning to move out of China,Patowary said.The department is also in touch with the DPIIT and theJETRO for setting up a Japanese industrial township in Assamto attract investment of industries based in the East Asiancountry, he said.A special cell has been set up at the stategovernment's 'Assam Startup -- The Nest' incubator to guideand mentor enterprising youths returning to Assam fromdifferent states, the minister said."Interested youths registering with the digitalplatform will be mentored at IIM, Calcutta. Financial grant ofup to Rs 50 lakh will be given to selected startups," he said.The Industries and Commerce Department will also signan MoU with the Indian chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs(TiE), Silicon Valley (USA) to leverage the startups in Assamso that they can have global access to the startup ecosystem,the minister said.He said the department will also organise a conclaveon startups in partnership with Microsoft after the lockdownis lifted."The potential of pharmaceutical companies has beenrealised during the COVID-19 outbreak.
