In a significant finding, a sero-survey conducted by the <keyword id="53938" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brihanmumbai-Municipal-Corporation">BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation</keyword> (<keyword id="48434" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BMC">BMC</keyword>) has revealed that 50 per cent of the pediatric population in <keyword id="6358070" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai">Mumbai</keyword> has developed <keyword id="9387280" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19-antibodies">Covid-19 antibodies</keyword>, ahead of the anticipated third wave of the pandemic, a top official said here on Monday. BMC Commissioner I.S. Chahal said that even the proportion of the pediatric population having antibodies has shown an increase, as per the survey, the fourth of its kind conducted between April 1 and June 15. While the sero-positivity is highest -- 53.43 per cent -- in the 10-14 age group, it is 51.04 per cent for 1-4, 47.33 per cent for 5-9 and 51.39 per cent for 15-18 age groups. The overall sero-positivity is 51.18 per cent, comprising 54.36 per cent in the public sector and 47.03 per cent in the private sector, indicating that more than half the pediatric population in a healthcare setting have already been exposed to <keyword id="8858345" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="sars-cov-2">SARS-COV-2</keyword>, said Chahal. The survey was conducted by a team of doctors comprising Jayanthi Shastri, Sachee Agrawal, Gargi Kakani, Surbhi Rathi, Ramesh Bharmal, Chandrakant Pawar, Kusum Jashnani and Gayathri Amonkar, under the supervision of Chahal and Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani. As compared to the Sero-survey 3 in March, which showed a sero-positivity of 39.04 per cent in the under-18 age group, there is a noticeable increase (51.18 per cent) in the latest survey, conducted jointly by BMC's <keyword id="6548875" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BYL-Nair-Hospital">BYL Nair Hospital</keyword> and Kasturba Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory (KMDL). A total of 2,176 blood samples were made available from the samples received by various public (1,283) and private laboratories (893) and sent to the KMDL for analysis, against the backdrop of the imminent danger of the Covid 'third wave' to the pediatric population. The heartening outcome indicates that over 50 per cent of the pediatric population has antibodies to Covid-19 and the proportion has also increased as compared to the previous survey, amid apprehensions that the 'third wave' could affect the vulnerable youngsters in the below 18 age groups, against the higher ages that were hit in the previous two waves. Maharashtra left with only three days COVID-19 vaccine stocks,  says Health Minister Rajesh Tope

On Saturday, the rate of doubling became faster at 83 days and the average growth rate of COVID-19 cases rose to 0.84 per cent. The average doubling rate in the city again slowed a bit on Sunday to 85 days and the growth rate decreased to 0.82 per cent, as per figures of <keyword id="927991" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Brihanmumbai-Municipal-Corporation">the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation</keyword> (BMC). The city's D-ward, which includes areas like Peddar Road and Malabar Hill, had the fastest doubling rate of 50 days on Sunday, while the M-East ward, that includes Chembur (East) area, had the slowest doubling rate of 119 days. The D-ward also had the highest growth rate of 1.40 per cent, while the M-East ward had the lowest growth rate of 0.58 per cent as on Sunday. The average doubling and growth rates are calculated taking COVID-19 cases of past seven days into consideration. Till Sunday, Mumbai reported 1,28,726 COVID-19 cases and 7,133 deaths due to the disease. On June 15, the city had an average doubling rate of 28 days and the average growth rate of 2.49 per cent. On July 31, the doubling rate improved to 77 days and growth rate to 0.9 per cent, according to BMC data. COVID-19 cases doubled faster in Mumbai last week, says BMC

Mumbai, Mar 25 () Mumbai police have collected a fine of Rs four crore in a month from two lakh people in the city, who were found not wearing mask despite the surge in COVID-19 cases, an official said on Thursday. The amount was collected from February 20, he said. "Rs four crore fine was collected from two lakh people at different locations across the city after they were found not wearing mask," Mumbai police spokesperson DCP S Chaitanya said. "While 50 per cent of the collected fine will go to the <keyword id="53938" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brihanmumbai-Municipal-Corporation">Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation</keyword> (<keyword id="48434" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BMC">BMC</keyword>), the rest of the amount will be used for the police welfare activities," he said, adding that the drive would continue. Mumbai on Wednesday reported its highest one-day rise in COVID-19 cases so far with 5,185 new infections coming to light, which took the caseload in the country's financial capital to 3,74,611. There are 39 active containment zones in the city, which include slums and chawls, while 432 buildings have been sealed so far after patients were found there, the civic body has said.

Health Secretary Pradeep Vyas cautioned that if the cases continued to increase at the current rate, by April 1st week, the state's active cases could double from the present 1.77 lakh to 3 lakh. Thackeray also made it clear that those who have been vaccinated and those awaiting their turn would have to compulsorily wear masks, maintain physical distancing and ensure sanitisation. "It is now a year since we are battling the pandemic. We brought it under control, but now there's a sudden surge which is matter of concern," he said. Simultaneously, the state government reiterated its orders of last week, and ordered all private offices to function at 50 percent staff strength, barring those in the manufacturing sector, while adhering to full Covid-19 protocols. The government has also ordered all cinema halls, auditoriums, drama halls, etc to operate at only 50 percent capacity and following all other norms. With 70 more deaths recorded during the day, the state death toll increased to 53,208. The state death rate was 2.20 percent, the recovery rate stood at 90.42 percent, with the number of active cases, jumping to 177,560 now, with the highest figure of patients in Pune, Mumbai and Thane, respectively. The number of people sent to home isolation shot up to 867,333 while those shunted to institutional quarantine increased to 7,848 on Friday.

It is up to the medical facilities, depending upon the availability of staff, to decide on the number of hours to carry out the vaccination," state health departments principal secretary Dr <keyword id="468728" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pradeep-Vyas">Pradeep Vyas</keyword> said. Currently, medical staff, frontline workers as designated by the government, people above 60 years of age and those between aged between 45 and 59 with co-morbidities are eligible to get the vaccine shots. The state government wants to speed up the vaccination process to cover the eligible population, said another health official. The state is also adding more vaccination centres in the state. A number of private hospitals have also been roped in for the inoculation drive. However, health officials are facing the challenge of some people coming up with fake medical certificates to show they are eligible for taking the vaccine. "We found some people in their late 40s who came up with fake medical certificates of co-morbidities to get the vaccine. When we asked them to describe their illness, we found they were lying. It is unfortunate," a health official from the <keyword id="53938" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brihanmumbai-Municipal-Corporation">Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation</keyword> said. Mumbai is divided into 12 police zones and the city police are authorised to collect a fine of ₹200 from people not wearing masks, as mandated under COVID-19 norms. Each police zone to fine 1,000 maskless people per day in Mumbai, says Mumbai Police Commissioner

<keyword id="6358070" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai">Mumbai</keyword>, Citing the fear of a second wave of coronavirus, the Mumbai civic body on Tuesday said <keyword id="37180" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="schools">schools</keyword> and <keyword id="37181" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="colleges">colleges</keyword> in the city will not reopen till <keyword id="47381" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="January">January</keyword> 15, 2021. Earlier, the <keyword id="53938" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brihanmumbai-Municipal-Corporation">Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation</keyword> (<keyword id="48434" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BMC">BMC</keyword>) had decided to keep schools and colleges closed till December 31. In a fresh circular issued on Tuesday, the BMC said it decided to keep all --government and private -- schools and colleges closed till January 15 due to the second wave of COVID-19 in other countries and the situation in some states in the country. The pandemic is under control in the Mumbai municipal limits though, it noted. The BMC also allowed the American Consulate School and other consulate schools in the city to reopen from January 18, but did not specify when exactly other educational institutes can reopen. Mumbai schools and colleges to remain shut till January 15

<keyword id="6358070" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai">Mumbai</keyword>, To encourage COVID-19-appropriate behaviour among residents of Mumbai, the city civic body has decided to provide 'free' masks to those found without face cover in public and also collect a fine of ₹ 200 from them. The <keyword id="53938" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brihanmumbai-Municipal-Corporation">Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation</keyword> (BMC) in a release on Sunday said from April till November 28, it took action against 4.85 lakh citizens for not wearing masks in public places and collected over ₹10.7 crore as fine from them. The BMC said when an offender, after being fined, goes ahead without a face mask, the objective of implementing the <keyword id="10125299" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Covid-19-prevention-protocol">COVID-19 prevention protocol</keyword> remains unfulfilled. "Therefore, in order to fulfill the objective, the citizen concerned will be provided a free mask and charged a <keyword id="45519" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="penalty">penalty</keyword> of ₹200," it said. The relevant penalty receipt will also mention about the free mask, it said. To curb the spread of infection in the post-Diwali season, the civic body has increased inspection drives in the city, with the violation of mask rule attracting a penalty of ₹200. From April till November 28, the maximum number of 32,010 citizens without masks were fined in the K-west ward, which includes areas like Juhu and Versova, a BMC official said, adding that ₹63.39 lakh was collected as fine from them. Besides sanitisation of hands and maintaining social distance, regular use of mask is necessary for controlling the spread of <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> infection, he added. "The Philippines government will follow and implement the Dharavi Model for containing Covid in densely populated slums" an elated BMC Municipal Commissioner I.S. Chahal told IANS. The BMC has already shared details of the 'Chase the Virus' policy with the Philippines' Department of Health (DOH). A news portal, Inquirer.net on Tuesday, has quoted the Philippines DOH which declared that it would follow the <keyword id="9780178" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="dharavi-mumbai">Dharavi-Mumbai</keyword> campaign conceptualized by BMC's Assistant Municipal Commissioner Kiran Dighavkar which earned all round praise. The Philippines, with a population of around 10.1 crore crammed in an area of nearly 2.98 lakh sq.km, is slightly smaller than Maharashtra with 3.07 lakh sq. km area and a population close to 11.5 crore. However, the archipelagic country currently ranks 22nd on the Corona Worldometer with 169,213 cases and 2,687 fatalities compared to Maharashtra's 604,358 cases and 20,265 deaths. Like Mumbai, around 30-lakh people live in congested slums in Manila, besides other cities in the Philippines. The high population density of Dharavi posed a huge challenge to the BMC and state health authorities to tackle the Corona spread. Civic officials said that the city succeeded in achieving what was earlier considered virtually a "mission impossible", especially in Dharavi, earning the BMC and Maharashtra government a pat from <keyword id="2555741" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-World-Health-Organisation">the World Health Organisation</keyword> in early July. Chahal said that as a result of its strategy, there are only 17,704 'active cases' in Mumbai, of which around 5,338 symptomatic patients are currently in hospitals. The city - which last week came down to the second worst-hit city (after Pune district moved to the top slot) in terms of Covid cases - is witnessing an average of less than 1,000 new cases daily, the recovery rate is 80 percent, doubling rate of cases is 86 days, and infection rate is 0.8 percent - among the lowest anywhere. The situation has eased to the extent that since late June, the BMC started moving out of Dharavi, and later shut down several small or medium quarantine facilities in the city. Patients are now being referred to the jumbo facilities at NSCI, Mahalaxmi Race Court, <keyword id="102951" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bandra-Kurla-Complex">Bandra Kurla Complex</keyword> and in Dahisar and Mulund to ensure centralised care. Amid apprehensions of patients unable to get beds, the current bed strength is 16,075 for complicated or serious cases, 23,437 for mild and asymptomatic patients besides 10,525 oxygen beds, 1,844 ICU beds and 1,096 ventilator beds. Of these, nearly 14,548 are vacant, but ready for operationalisation whenever required, besides 330 vacant in ICUs, giving a very comfortable position, said Chahal. Buoyed by the success of the 'Chase the Virus' game, the state government is now implementing it in Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Pune, Aurangabad, Solapur, Nashik, Jalgaon and other upcoming hotspots even as the Mumbai Corona crisis has practically been 'chased' away.
