<br />On Saturday, Harambe, a 17-year-old male gorilla, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-killing-of-gorilla-to-save-boy-at-ohio-zoo-sparks-outrage-2016-5">was shot and killed at the Cincinnati Zoo</a> after a 4-year-old boy slipped into his enclosure. Harambe was a Western lowland silverback gorilla, a critically endangered species.<br /><br />The death of Harambe has caused outrage among animal rights activists. Many have raised the question: Did the zoo make the right decision in killing the gorilla?<br /><br />The alternative to killing Harambe would have been shooting him with a sedative. But zoo officials say that would have only made the situation worse. <strong>The tranquilizer could have taken up to ten minutes to work, they said.</strong> Meanwhile, the boy would be put in even more danger.<br /><br />He was "clearly disoriented" and "acting erratically," Cincinnati Zoo Director <keyword id="8784072" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Thane-Maynard">Thane Maynard</keyword> <a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/outrage-grows-after-gorilla-harambe-shot-dead-cincinnati-zoo-save-n582706">said at a news conference</a>. While the rest of the gorillas in the enclosure cleared the area thanks to special calls made by <keyword id="1045585" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zookeepers">zookeepers</keyword>, Harambe did not respond.<br /><br />Shooting him with a tranquilizer, Maynard said, could have taken up to ten minutes to take effect and would have only caused more panic in the animal.<br /><br />"You can't take a risk with a silverback gorilla," said Maynard. "We're talking about animal that with one hand can take a coconut and crush it."<br /><br />Although tranquilizing Harambe was not an option, critics still say that the zoo could have done more to draw the gorilla away from the boy rather than killing him.<br /><br />"When gorilla or other apes have things they shouldn't have, keepers will negotiate with them, bring food, their favorite treats, pineapple or some kind of fruit that they don't know and negotiate with them," Ian Redmond, chairman of The Gorilla Organization told <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/30/us/gorilla-shot-harambe/">CNN</a>.<br /><br />Some witnesses even speculated that at first Harambe appeared to be protecting the boy, only growing agitated as people started screaming.<br /><br />Many animal behaviorists have stood behind the zoo's decision. Wildlife expert Jack Hanna told ABC's "<a href="http://abcnews.go.com/US/gorilla-shot-cincinnati-zoo-killed-boy-intervention-expert/story?id=39478421">Good Morning America</a>" that there was "no doubt" in his mind that "that child would not be here today if they hadn't made that decision."<br /><br />"We stand by our decision," Maynard said. The incident happened little before 4 pm on a Saturday. Having made his way over the barrier fence and through a thicket of bushes, the child fell 15 feet into a shallow moat, where his splashing attracted Harambe's attention. </p><p>The 10 minutes that followed — some of which was captured on camera by onlookers — instantly became the stuff of internet legend. Only a day before his death, Harambe celebrated his 17th birthday.</p><p>On the anniversary of his death, mourners and internet historians marked the loss on social media, but amid protests over the killing of black men by police and others, many criticized the trend as insensitive. </p><h2>Harambe's death sparked a debate over a tragic choice.</h2><p>The internet's obsession with Harambe was driven in part by real sadness and outrage.</p><p>After the shooting, animal rights activists questioned whether killing Harambe was the right decision, and the ethicality of keeping animals in zoos at all became a topic of national conversation. Experts and eyewitnesses were polled for their analysis of Harambe's behavior in the clips, turning the zookeepers' choice to preemptively kill Harambe into a subject of intense public scrutiny.</p><p>Some eyewitnesses said that, initially, Harambe appeared to be protecting the child, and only when onlookers started screaming did Harambe grow uneasy. #Justice4Harambe trended online, petitions were made and signed by thousands, and candlelight vigils and protests took place across the country. Propelled by <a href="https://www.vox.com/2016/8/17/12457468/harambe-meme-social-commentary-explained">Instagram's black community and Weird Twitter</a>, the internet exploded with over-the-top Harambe memorial posts. </p><p>These parody memorial <keyword id="1605152" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Memes">memes</keyword>, in turn, created a galaxy of sub-memes, song parodies, and slogans, including the infamous "dicks out for Harambe."</p><p>Harambe even earned a shout-out on Young Thug's 2016 JEFFREY album, on which every track is dedicated to <a href="https://pitchfork.com/news/67805-young-thug-teases-new-project-jeffery-with-cover-art-tracklist/">one of the rapper's idols.</a> Harambe's name appeared beside the likes of Rihanna, Kanye West, Wyclef Jean, and Floyd Mayweather.</p><p>The Harambe meme was co-opted by a number of online communities, but as Aja Romano <a href="https://www.vox.com/2016/8/17/12457468/harambe-meme-social-commentary-explained">observed</a> for Vox, black social media users embraced it specifically "to comment ironically on the ways in which society tends to minimize and overlook the deaths of ordinary people of color." Harambe's death, memorably, occurred the same week 1,000 people died trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea and immigrate to Europe. The user who hacked Maynard's Twitter, who went by the handle @prom, changed Maynard's Twitter avatar to a photo of Harambe and also tweeted, "Hacked by @prom#justiceforharambe" from Maynard's account - the tweet was later deleted. </p><p>Maynard and other zoo officials are fed up with the repeated reminders of Harambe's death.
