Panorama Studios has acquired the international remake rights to the Malayalam movies "Drishyam 1 &amp; 2" from the original producers Aashirvad Cinemas. The film series is also being developed in South Korea as well as a development deal is being finalised for a Spanish language version, the banner said in a release. Kumar Mangat Pathak, Chairman and Managing Director, Panorama Studios, said he is excited to celebrate the story of "Drishyam" with audiences worldwide. "We are very happy to collaborate with Gulfstream Pictures and JOAT Films to create this story in English for Hollywood. After Korea and Hollywood, our mission is to produce 'Drishyam' in 10 countries in the next three to five years," he said in a statement. "We have received immense love from our Indian audiences, who have made the 'Drishyam' franchise a massive success. The strength of 'Drishyam' lies in its story, and we want it to be enjoyed by audiences globally," added producer Abhishek Pathak, who also directed "Drishyam 2" (Hindi). "Drishyam", the 2013 Malayalam crime thriller, revolved around Georgekutty (Mohanlal) and his family, who come under suspicion when <keyword id="20772577" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="varun-prabhakar" source="keywords">Varun Prabhakar</keyword>, the son of the IG Geetha Prabhakar, goes missing. "The film is a timeless thriller that has entranced audiences across the globe. We can't wait to bring the movie to fans here in the U.S," Karz and Bindley said in a joint statement. But when <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> decides to remake a regional flick, it usually provides all the bells and whistles, passion and <keyword id="6355304" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="action">action</keyword>, which the audience is bound to lap up. Is Salman Khan-starrer <keyword id="6593120" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jai-Ho">Jai Ho</keyword> (earlier called Mental) woefully lacking in those departments? 
 But before we get to the critical part of it, let us have a look at the <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword> figures. The numbers are good and the <keyword id="1952421" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Action-drama">action drama</keyword> seems to be well on its way to enter the coveted <keyword id="6567206" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="100-crore-club">100 crore club</keyword>. According to industry estimates, the flick has grossed a little more than Rs 70 crore in the domestic market after Day 4 (January 27) and the overseas reception has been decent as well – around Rs 22.4 crore in the <keyword id="382940" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="opening-weekend">opening weekend</keyword>. But it has failed to create the kind of dhoom <keyword id="6355923" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Aamir-Khan">Aamir Khan</keyword>’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Dhoom-3-Breaks-All-Bollywood-Movie-RecordsGives-You-Some-Dumb-Entertainment/articleshow/27853596.cms">action thriller</a> created last year, both at home and abroad. The <keyword id="1839596" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office-collections">box office collections</keyword> of <keyword id="24705" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dhoom-3">Dhoom 3</keyword> stood at Rs 170 crore-plus just after the <keyword id="2034863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="First-weekend">first weekend</keyword>, with nearly Rs 63 crore coming from the overseas markets. 
 
Made on a budget of around Rs 75 crore, Jai Ho hit about 4,500 screens in India, but flunked on the very first day. It collected Rs 17 crore nett in India on Friday (January 24), according to an official statement. However, business picked up during the <keyword id="2034866" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="R-Day-weekend">R-Day weekend</keyword> and the movie saw 80-100% occupancy at single screens in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and central India. The domestic and overseas theatrical rights of Jai Ho have been reportedly sold for $18 million. 
 
Now let us come back to the basics. Although not a financial flop, what has plagued the movie in the first place? It doesn’t lack the usual masala, of course. True to the <keyword id="2034869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="R-Day-sentiments">R-Day sentiments</keyword>, here is the <keyword id="1429841" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ex-Army-officer">ex-army officer</keyword> Jai Agnihotri (Salman), who has been chucked out because he was too intense and took too many risks. Back in civil life, he doesn’t change much and beats up the baddies with as much vigour. <keyword id="33178" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Danny-Denzongpa">Danny Denzongpa</keyword> (home minister <keyword id="2034843" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dashrat-Singh">Dashrat Singh</keyword>) and his daughter <keyword id="6508015" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sana-Khan">Sana Khan</keyword> are the root of all evil, but with Sallu Bhai around (what if he is nearing 50), no one can escape a heavy dose of action, whether you like it or no. <keyword id="2034846" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Debutante-Daisy-Shah">Debutante Daisy Shah</keyword> (Rinky) tries to add a bit of romance to the mix, but fails to look hot in spite of her see-through sarees. The rest of the cast could be easily forgotten except for <keyword id="6358125" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tabu">Tabu</keyword> (Geeta) who plays Sallu’s elder sister but has no script to deliver her role. 
 And the same goes for the entire movie. <keyword id="303" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Director">Director</keyword> <keyword id="28494" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sohail-Khan">Sohail Khan</keyword>, Salman’s brother, tried to stash in all the ‘hit’ elements without realising that they should be well integrated with an impressive storyline. Every single character stays painfully one-dimensional and we do miss Salman’s timely humour or the impish traits that made him adorable in many of the earlier hits like <keyword id="29781" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="wanted">Wanted</keyword>, <keyword id="94964" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dabangg">Dabangg</keyword>, <keyword id="518707" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dabangg-2">Dabangg 2</keyword> and <keyword id="638019" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ek-Tha-Tiger">Ek Tha Tiger</keyword>. 
 The bottom line: Too much of anything is bad – be it cliché plots, action &amp; gore or the final shirt-ripping, even though you are getting a close view of Bollywood’s fittest star. Unless his character evolves suitably in the future, he may not make the cut in his <keyword id="2034878" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Action-avatar">action avatar</keyword> alone.

Through Clichés, Fails To Create A Dhoom

Off lately, the trend of copying, or as they like to call it, officially remaking South Indian movies in Hindi has started picking up. This happens mainly because of the wider reach of Hindi as a language and because of the celebrity status of the actors of the Hindi film industry as compared to the actors from the southern parts of the country. 
 
While everyone knows that movies like Wanted, Ready, Bodyguard, and Rowdy Rathore are scene-to-scene remade from respective South Indian movies, we list other blockbusters and popular ‘remakes’ that minted crores at the box office. 
 
1. Son Of Sardaar (2012) 
The so-called laughter riot, this movie starring Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt was the Hindi remake of a 2010 Telugu movie, called Maryada Ramanna, which was directed by Baahubali fame S. S. Rajamouli and starred Sunil and Nagineedu. 
 
2. Singham (2011) 
The movie that brought Ajay Devgn back into action genre and became one of the highest grossing movies of 2011 was a remake of Singam, which starred Suriya and Anushka Shetty and came out in 2010. Both movies were co-produced by Reliance Entertainment. Singam was also remade in Kannada as Kempe Gowda, and in Bengali as Shotru. 
 
3. Ghajini (2008) 
The Aamir Khan starrer was the first Hindi film to earn Rs 100 crores at the box office, but the success can’t be attributed solely to the crew of the Hindi movie, because of the fact that it was a remake of a Tamil film of the same name, which came out in 2005. Interestingly, the female lead of both the films were portrayed by Asin Thottumkal and were also directed by the same person, A. R. Murugadoss. The Tamil film itself is inspired from Memento, an English film by Christopher Nolan. 
 
4. Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) 
The psychological comedy horror movie is the official Hindi remake of Manichitrathazhu, a 1993 Malayalam movie starring Mohanlal. The 1993 original was also remade in Kannada as Apthamitra, in Tamil and Telugu as Chandramukhi, and in Bengali as Rajmohol. 
 
5. Kyon Ki (2005) 
The Priyadarshan movie that had Salman Khan playing a mental patient was a remake of a 1986 movie Thalavattam, which was also directed by Priyadarshan. The original movie starred Mohanlal and was also remade in Tamil in 1988 as Manasukkul Mathappu. 
 
6. Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (2001) 
This movie has attained the status of a cult-classic because of the amazing performance by Madhavan. However, this was not the first time that he played this role. He also starred in Minnale, a 2001 Tamil movie that was later remade into RHTDM. 
 
7. Nayak (2001) 
This movie showed an ordinary citizen becoming a Chief Minister on the basis of his honesty and selflessness, but was not made keeping Anil Kapoor and Amrish Puri in mind. This movie was actually a remake of the 1999 Tamil movie called Mudhalvan, which starred Arjun and Raghuvaran in the respective roles. Both movies were directed by S. Shankar.

But true to the <keyword id="1282628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood-tradition">Bollywood tradition</keyword>, the madcap entertainer <keyword id="57035" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="MTH">MTH</keyword>, starring David’s son <keyword id="4928" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Varun">Varun</keyword> and the sizzling female leads <keyword id="88540" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ileana-DCruz">Ileana D’Cruz</keyword> and <keyword id="611054" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nargis-Fakri">Nargis Fakri</keyword>, has topped the <keyword id="1812427" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office-chart">box office chart</keyword> this time. 
 
Main Tera Hero had an average start though, netting just Rs 6.6 crore at home on the opening Friday and recording 35-40% occupancy rate. But in spite of the cricket fever built around the India-Sri Lanka T20 World Cup final on Sunday, business picked up exceedingly well for the wild and whacky comedy flick and it netted a little over Rs 22 crore during the first weekend, as per industry estimates. It did moderately well on the crucial Day 4 (Monday, April 7) and collections at <keyword id="827271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Box-Office">domestic box office</keyword> amounted to nearly Rs 4 crore, as per industry estimates. Although MTH is a <keyword id="87291" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="big-budget-movie">big budget movie</keyword> and cost around Rs 40 crore, the money would be recovered soon, going by <keyword id="112481" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="ticket-sales">ticket sales</keyword>. The movie is produced by Shobha Kapoor and <keyword id="6354597" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ekta-Kapoor">Ekta Kapoor</keyword> for Balaji Motion Pictures. 
 
MTH is <keyword id="383666" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Varun-Dhawan">Varun Dhawan</keyword>’s second appearance in Bollywood – after <keyword id="2188068" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Karan-Johar-directed">Karan Johar-directed</keyword> commercial success <keyword id="549195" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Student-of-the-Year">Student of the Year</keyword>, which also starred <keyword id="1320874" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sidharth-Malhotra">Sidharth Malhotra</keyword> and <keyword id="6354526" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Alia-Bhatt">Alia Bhatt</keyword>. The movie raked in Rs 28-29 crore nett in the first weekend, considerably higher than what Main Tera Hero did in spite of some extensive <keyword id="2188097" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pre-release-hype">pre-release hype</keyword>. 
 Before we tell you what worked and didn’t work for this <keyword id="2188113" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="David-Dhawan-comedy">David Dhawan comedy</keyword>, let’s take a look at the <keyword id="2188098" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Box-office-performances">box office performances</keyword> of the other two releases. Purab Kohli-Tannishtha Chatterjee-Kirti Kulhari starrer Jal has a pertinent theme – it portrays the wild and water-starved <keyword id="80682" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rann-of-Kutch">Rann of Kutch</keyword> and its people locked in an eternal battle with their hostile surroundings. The movie has been criticised by many as a ‘festival’ flick while others vouch it is as commercial as can be. But either way, it has cut no ice with the domestic audience and reportedly grossed less than Rs 3 crore at home after the first weekend while fourth day collections stood at Rs 40-50 lakh. <keyword id="357845" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dar-Motion-Pictures">DAR Motion Pictures</keyword>, in collaboration with <keyword id="2188071" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="One-World-Films">One World Films</keyword>, released the movie across 385 screens, which means it is targeting a <keyword id="2188107" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Niche-audience">niche audience</keyword>. 
 
Ebn-E-Batuta, the third release of the week, also bombed the <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword>. The movie grossed some Rs 40-50 lakh on the first day, but the opening weekend numbers are yet to come in. Directed by <keyword id="2188109" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Varun-Middha">Varun Middha</keyword>, this one had an estimated budget of Rs 5 crore, but may follow the same fate as Jal. 
 
Coming back to Main Tera Hero, it is not difficult to understand what makes this movie so popular. This one provides a laughter riot – a mad concoction of romance, action and <keyword id="3769" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="David-Dhawan">David Dhawan</keyword>’s brand of none-too-subtle comedy. But the best thing to happen to us is the star son Varun Dhawan, lauded by most critics as the <keyword id="2188114" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Young-Govinda">Young Govinda</keyword>. It is a remake of the Telugu blockbuster <keyword id="471189" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kandireega">Kandireega</keyword> – telling the story of <keyword id="2180043" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sreenath-Prasad">Sreenath Prasad</keyword> or <keyword id="761791" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Seenu">Seenu</keyword> (Varun Dhawan). The problem kid comes to the big city to put his life in order, carries out his romantic escapades with two babes, <keyword id="2647" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sunaina">Sunaina</keyword> (Ileana D’Cruz) and <keyword id="173" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ayesha">Ayesha</keyword> (<keyword id="37518" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nargis-Fakhri">Nargis Fakhri</keyword>), gets into fisticuffs with Sunaina’s cop beau <keyword id="11572" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Angad">Angad</keyword> (<keyword id="34751" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arunoday-Singh">Arunoday Singh</keyword>) and gets entangled with Ayesha’s mafia dad <keyword id="19147" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="vikrant">Vikrant</keyword> (<keyword id="6533" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anupam-Kher">Anupam Kher</keyword>) and his gang. What follows is pure mayhem, but all things are sorted out well in the traditional Bollywood style and true lovers unite at the journey’s end. Quite a hilarious flick if you are ready to put logic away for some time and go with the Bollywood flow. 
 
 
 
In stark contrast, Jal portrays a reality as harsh as the arid land of Kutch. Here we have <keyword id="2188122" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bakka">Bakka</keyword> (<keyword id="26929" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="purab-kohli">Purab Kohli</keyword>), who has the power of divining water spots (does it remind you of <keyword id="6361516" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nana-Patekar">Nana Patekar</keyword> in Thodasa Roomani Ho Jaayen?), his sweetheart <keyword id="32289" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="kesar">Kesar</keyword> (<keyword id="2349" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="kirti">Kirti</keyword>) hailing from a rival village and <keyword id="719919" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="animal-activist">animal activist</keyword> <keyword id="1158" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kim">Kim</keyword> (Saidah Jules). Kim is out to save the <keyword id="2188125" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Water-starved-flamingos">water-starved flamingos</keyword>, but not too interested to help the clan living there. Set against a stark yet magnificent backdrop, Jal had all the elements to become an epic tale of love and treachery, hope and hopelessness, apathy and ardour. Instead, viewers are handed out a simplistic story that fails to follow the stream of life (in other words, water) from the past into the future, the way it goes with human history. But the movie is worth the watch because of its <keyword id="2188126" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Offbeat-theme">offbeat theme</keyword> while Purab Kohli literally sets the screen on fire. 
 
Ebn-E-Batuta may remind you of <keyword id="47027" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="James-Cameron">James Cameron</keyword>’s <keyword id="44111" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Avatar">Avatar</keyword>, but there the similarities end. In this <keyword id="2188127" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="India-made-sci-fi-flick">India-made sci-fi flick</keyword>, the <keyword id="77929" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="aliens">aliens</keyword> have invaded <keyword id="976816" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Planet-Earth">Planet Earth</keyword> to conquer it, but three <keyword id="343" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Friends">friends</keyword> (<keyword id="389953" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Omkar-Das-Manikpuri">Omkar Das Manikpuri</keyword>, <keyword id="2188128" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dev-Gohar">Dev Gohar</keyword> and <keyword id="2188131" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Satyendra-Khare">Satyendra Khare</keyword>) try and <keyword id="382268" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="leverage">leverage</keyword> the power of the <keyword id="2151868" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="extra-terrestrials">extra-terrestrials</keyword> for their own advancement. Some social issues and fun moments are also there, but this one hardly matches the Hollywood flicks in terms of special effects. Kids may still enjoy the movie but with <keyword id="1906261" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bhoothnath-Returns">Bhoothnath Returns</keyword> (starring <keyword id="6357912" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="amitabh-bachchan">Amitabh Bachchan</keyword>) hitting the theatres on April 11, Ebn-E-Batuta is not likely to enjoy much exposure at the box office during the second weekend.

The masala entertainer was released in 2,100 screens across India and its debut day earning is the fifth highest opening day collection for movies released in 2014, behind <keyword id="6593120" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jai-Ho">Jai Ho</keyword>, <keyword id="72970" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="2-States">2 States</keyword>, <keyword id="6427325" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gunday">Gunday</keyword> and <keyword id="1020628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ragini-MMS-2">Ragini MMS 2</keyword>. Earnings on Monday fell less than 40% than what it was on Friday and the strong growth continued even on Day 5 (Tuesday, May 27) when it collected around Rs 4 crore at home. 
 
This one is a medium-budget movie and cost around Rs 26 crore including promotion. So we can safely assume that it is set to be a hit without much fuss. But all these good numbers do not essentially spell quality. 
 While Kriti Sanon (<keyword id="7876" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dimpy">Dimpy</keyword>) looks quite striking in a below-par storyline featuring love-and-marriage adventures and misadventures in Jattland, Tiger Shroff (<keyword id="230102" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bablu">Bablu</keyword>) looks quite inane unless he is in the thick of the action, doing some awesome stunts and beating up the goons. Noted film critic Anupama Chopra has given the movie 2 out of 5 stars saying, “Heropanti is comically bad and the disjointed narrative brims with low-IQ, high-testosterone men brandishing weapons. The women are puppets who either simper or scream.” 
 
Quite depressing, if you ask us, but there’s one silver lining. Both movies are raking in the moolah after a long time and that’s what matters in the business of cinema.

Box Office: Kochadaiiyaan Thrives On Rajini Power; Heropanti Soaring High

Get Your <keyword id="6362088" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="kick">Kick</keyword> This Eid, yells the movie poster and sure enough, it has never been this good for a <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> release in 2014. <keyword id="1470620" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="superstar-Salman-Khan">Superstar Salman Khan</keyword> is back with Kick, his second venture of the current year, and the action-drama raced past his earlier outing <keyword id="6593120" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jai-Ho">Jai Ho</keyword> (opening weekend collection Rs 58.50 crore at home). Released on July 25, the Salman Khan-Jacqueline Fernandez-starrer netted a mammoth Rs 83.83 crore at the <keyword id="827271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Box-Office">domestic box office</keyword> in the first three days (trade figure stood at Rs 82.01 crore) and is expected to hit the Rs 100 crore mark on Day 5 (July 29) at home. 
 
“Kick has a SPECTACULAR weekend. Fri 26.50 cr, Sat 27.15 cr, Sun 30.18 cr. Total: Rs 83.83 cr nett. India biz. REMARKABLE,” tweeted film critic and analyst Taran Adarsh. This is the highest opening day collection in 2014, but Kick failed to beat the debut day records of <keyword id="6355923" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Aamir-Khan">Aamir Khan</keyword>’s <keyword id="24705" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Dhoom-3">Dhoom 3</keyword> (Rs 36 crore), <keyword id="4546" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shah-Rukh">Shah Rukh</keyword>’s Chennai Express (Rs 33.10 crore) and Salman’s own <keyword id="638019" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ek-Tha-Tiger">Ek Tha Tiger</keyword> (Rs 32.92 crore). Neither could it beat Dhoom 3’s record of entering the Rs 100 crore club in just three days. Interestingly, Salman’s Ek Tha Tiger entered the 100 crore club in the first weekend. 
 Although first Monday collections saw a huge 50% drop in earnings (compared to Sunday) at the domestic <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword>, the movie collected around Rs 13.5 crore as per industry estimates, taking Kick’s four-day total to Rs 97.3 crore (approx.). The flick has also done some good business overseas and grossed around Rs 22 crore at the end of Day 4. “Kick is excellent in USA-Canada and has performed well elsewhere. The business will get a further boost once the Eid festivities begin,” said Adarsh in another tweet. 
 
With Kick hitting the 100 crore mark globally, Salman now has seven <keyword id="2448807" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="100-crore-grossers">100 crore grossers</keyword> to his credit. The earlier six include Ek Tha Tiger, <keyword id="35445" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="bodyguard">Bodyguard</keyword>, <keyword id="94964" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dabangg">Dabangg</keyword> and Dabangg2, <keyword id="18142" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ready">Ready</keyword> and Jai Ho. The rest is usual Bollywood histrionics – right from accident to memory loss to melodrama and finally, a predictable climax without an ounce of surprise. But you would better forget the logic and the coherence part. The best thing that happened to this movie is Salman Khan (and the supporting cast) who sizzled all the way with devilish humour, sleek action and smooth romance.

<ul><li>Lecturer-turned-filmmaker Unnikrishnan B. believes a film today needs to be “extra special” to draw the audience to the theatres. </li><li>As per Unnikrishan, <keyword id="25099" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="malayalam" source="Orion">Malayalam</keyword> cinema is much ahead of other languages in terms of quality of content, but not the size of the business. </li><li>His last film Christopher was a vigilante action drama that opened to positive reviews.</li></ul>The aftermath of the lockdowns has redefined the fundamentals of the business of cinema. While Shah Rukh Khan-starrer <keyword id="12756474" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pathaan" source="Orion">Pathaan</keyword> may have broken box office records on its way to a blockbuster status, a Malayalam film with a tenth of the former’s collections is also a superhit now – all thanks to the dynamics of the OTT (over-the-top) ecosystem, says an ace Malayalam film director. The advent of a host of OTT platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+Hotstar etc and the pandemic-induced changes in the way cinema is consumed has brought on a fundamental change in the business of cinema, says Unnikrishan Bhaskaran, in an exclusive conversation with Business Insider India. As a writer-director, Unnikrishnan has been a part of the industry for over two decades and has over ten films under his belt. He debuted in the industry as a writer with the drama Jalamarmaram (1999) - that won him his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Screenplay. He ventured into direction with Smart City in 2006 and went on to direct films like Madampi (2008), Pramani (2010), Grandmaster (2012), and the latest, Aaraattu (2022) and Christopher (2023), among others. While acknowledging that the collections of Pathaan are “mind-boggling” and no other film has succeeded in bringing people to theatres in large numbers after the pandemic, Unnikrishnan insists the way to declare a film a hit or flop has changed. Since its release on January 25, 2023, Pathaan has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/entertainment/news/indian-films-that-grossed-1000-crore-worldwide/slidelist/98144028.cms">grossed </a>over ₹1,000 crore in worldwide collections - only the fifth Indian film to do so in cinematic history. “In Malayalam, when you say a film is a superhit, it usually collects over ₹10-₹12 crore. But now if your film collects ₹5-₹6 crore from theatrical runs, you should regard it as a hit because there’s another vertical (OTT) or source of revenue that compensates for the lack of theatre revenue,” says Unnikrishnan . His latest film, the vigilante crime-drama Christopher starring Mammootty released on February 9 in theatres and opened to positive reviews - <a href="https://www.boxofficebusiness.in/2023/02/christopher-day-1-box-office-collection-worldwide.html">reportedly </a>raking in ₹11 crore in worldwide collections in 10 days of its release. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Malayalam cinema: quality over quantity" comment="subhead2" text="Malayalam cinema: quality over quantity">Malayalam cinema: quality over quantity</cmsannotation> According to Unnikrishnan, Malayalam cinema has high-quality content that is better than most other languages, but it’s a small industry, lacking the strength to compete with bigger industries like Tamil or Telugu language cinema. “If you take commercial figures as a yardstick, we’re (Malayalam cinema) far behind - because our films only release on 200-300 screens whereas a Vijay (a Tamil star), Rajni (Rajnikant), or Kamal Haasan film releases in over 1,000 screens. Volume-wise it can’t be compared to other languages but if you take content quality as a benchmark, we’re much much ahead,” shared Unnikrishnan. Indeed, from thrillers like the Drishyam series to feminist dramas like The Great Indian Kitchen and family dramas like Kumbalangi Nights, Malayalam cinema has long been pushing the bar with original and engaging content. As Unnikrishnan puts it, despite the constraints, “when it comes to content and innovative stuff, every language in cinema looks at Malayalam with awe.” <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Only ‘extra special’ films can draw in the crowds" comment="subhead2" text="Only ‘extra special’ films can draw in the crowds">Only ‘extra special’ films can draw in the crowds</cmsannotation> Malayalam cinema may deliver high-quality content - but it can’t always pull crowds into theatres, because content alone doesn’t attract audiences, especially after the pandemic. Unnikrishnan believes that only “extra special” films can now draw the crowds to theatres – because the rise of OTT during the pandemic led to the end of “average-run” movies. Average-run movies are typically movies that enjoy a limited run in theatres but the collections are not low enough for them to be categorised as box-office flops. “There’s no middle path now - either you watch in theatres, or when it comes to OTT. There was something called an average-run film before Covid - that’s no longer there. The majority of the audience stays away from theatres because it’s a habitual thing - they’re so used to watching it in the cosy atmosphere of their homes,” remarks Unnikrishnan, who has dabbled in both films and the television industry. The lecturer-turned-filmmaker has written and directed three award-winning films back to back – the 2003 telefilm Antharangal, the 2004 Asianet television drama Black and White and the 2005 film Annum Mazhayayirunnu. He also directed the crime drama Villain (2017)- the country's first movie entirely shot in 8K quality. In a career spanning over two decades, Unnikrishnan has seen various trends emerge, from remakes to content driven by OTT platforms. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Remakes: No longer an easy business" comment="subhead2" text="Remakes: No longer an easy business">Remakes: No longer an easy business</cmsannotation> As per Unnikrishnan , OTT hasn’t just ended the average-run movies but also the remake industry by providing movies with subtitles and dubbed versions of movies. “Remake market is now very difficult because when OTT platforms buy your content, you’re forced to dub it in all regional languages. For instance, Christopher is dubbed into Tamil and Hindi. (Now) an idea should be so fascinating that you take it up and really rework it to give a totally different film - that’s what they did with Lucifer when they remade it in Telugu,” added Unnikrishnan. Lucifer, released in 2019, is a Malayalam crime thriller and the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever - <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/regional-movies/mohanlal-s-lucifer-storms-into-rs-200-crore-club-first-for-malayalam-cinema/story-vTm7JXaAdz0FWFTllE4n2I.html">earning over ₹200 crore</a>. Its Telugu remake was released in October 2022, titled Godfather - it <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/movies/regional-cinema/story/godfather-box-office-collection-day-5-megastar-chiranjeevi-nayanthara-100-crore-2282883-2022-10-09">entered the ₹100-crore club in just three days</a>. Ajay Devgn-starrer Drishyam 2 also <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/hindi/bollywood/box-office/drishyam-2-box-office-collection-day-29-ajay-devgns-film-continues-to-mint-money-despite-competition-from-avatar-the-way-of-water/articleshow/96295871.cms">raked in over ₹200 crore in collections</a>. It’s the official remake of the Malayalam thriller of the same name, starring <keyword id="29511" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mohan-lal" source="Orion">Mohan Lal</keyword>. As per Unnikrishnan, the success of the Hindi language Drishyam was largely due to how the movie was adapted, and also because the original release on OTT was available in only one language. Meanwhile, despite delivering one of the biggest hits of 2022 (Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2) Kartik Aaryan- starrer Shehzada failed to draw the crowds. Shehzada is the official remake of the 2020 Telugu film Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="“The OTT euphoria is transitory”" comment="subhead2" text="“The OTT euphoria is transitory”">“The OTT euphoria is transitory”</cmsannotation> Clearly, OTT has changed the way we view cinema. But, even though the pandemic led to the rise in the popularity of OTT platforms, Unnikrishnan believes “OTT euphoria is transitory”, engineered by the pandemic. “When the pandemic happened, the theatres closed and we had no options - we were all glued to OTT platforms. And they (OTT) also had to constantly give you content. So people had the illusion that good cinema finally found its platform,” said Unnikrishnan. He believes that once the theatres opened after the pandemic, OTT platforms predictably changed their policy - with films releasing in theatres before coming on to OTT. “During the pandemic, many brilliant films premiered on OTT and everyone took notice of it. For instance, Drishyam 1 was a huge theatrical success but its sequel had an equally brilliant run when it (was) released on OTT. But if Jeethu and Mohanlal ( Jeethu Joseph was the director and Mohanlal was the lead actor of Drishyam) come up with a third part, definitely the OTT will insist for it to be released in theatres first,” said Unnikrishnan.

 The Hindi version of the movie is also drawing audiences as Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan voiced Mufasa in the dubbed version. His son, Aryan Khan voiced Simba, making his much-awaited Bollywood debut. According to a report in "variety.com", the film is already roaring past $100 million in ticket sales globally. In fact, it posted to become the second biggest opening day of the year behind Avengers: Endgame in a few markets like France ($4.8 million), Australia ($2.9 million) and Germany ($2.3 million). Disney’s Lion King inches closer to ₹500 million business in India in its first week

A few days after the launch of its official poster, the makers of <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword>’s next ambitious project Bang Bang have come out with the official trailer. In just a few hours of its release, the trailer has hit 3,66,095 views on <keyword id="10879" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="YouTube">YouTube</keyword>. 
 In the trailer, the Bollywood heartthrob <keyword id="6354563" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hrithik-Roshan">Hrithik Roshan</keyword> can be seen doing various stunts and romancing the diva <keyword id="6354850" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Katrina-Kaif">Katrina Kaif</keyword>, literally, on the go. 
 
As expected, the trailer is full of heart-thumping action scenes including bikes, buses, formula racing cars and of course lots and lots of guns and bullets.

 Though it is not a Friday, the makers have decided to release the movie on a national holiday to have an added advantage. The ironic fact that this action film is releasing on the birthday of peace-loving man <keyword id="6355532" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mahatma-Gandhi">Mahatma Gandhi</keyword> is played well by the makers as the trailer makes a promise of bullets flying on the most peaceful day of the year. 
 
The official remake of Hollywood film Knight and Day, this film is shot in Thailand, Greece, Abu Dhabi, Mumbai and Delhi. Reportedly, the film has even crossed the stipulated budget, and has been made for Rs 130 crore.
