<ul><li>Recent estimates of time spent on media consumption pegs the share of <keyword id="6357922" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Television">television</keyword> at 59% with digital following a close second at 30%. </li><li>Google, which leads digital AdEx revenues, and spent approximately a massive Rs 557 crore on television in 2019, promoting its various services. </li><li>Meera Iyer, Chief Marketing Officer, Medlife.com lists down the reasons why TV gets the lion’s share of marketing budgets. </li></ul> If one was to consider recent statistics, an average adult customer spends nearly 5 hours daily consuming media. Recent estimates peg the share of television at 59% with digital following a close second at 30%. The remaining is made up of other traditional media like print and radio. When you compare the time spent to Adex estimates, TV gets 38%, digital 19%, while print takes the second position at 32% of all marketing spends in the country. In a sense, the ratio of spends to time spent as percentages for both TV and digital are about 64%. Despite this, as a marketeer, given a choice for 2020 and the foreseeable near future, I would choose to invest in television. The foremost reason for this is the simple rule of marketing which indicates that, provided there is budget available, it is good to invest in the medium where customers spend the maximum time. Why? Here are my top 5 reasons. Highest Consumption Television has the highest share of screen time, nearly double digital! Going back to economics, it is best to advertise here if you have the spending power. What’s more is that the reach is also better. About 195 million households (~80% of the total) own a television in India, of which 80% are CNS. No other medium is as widely penetrated and coupled with screen time, it’s a clear winner. Better Recall Television is less cluttered than any other medium. There are about 12K brands advertising on television when compared to the 2 lakh on print and more than a million on digital. This means marketeers stand a better chance at creating memorability and recall on this medium as compared to any other. One can argue that it’s the creative that determines the recall, but for the same spread of good, average and bad creatives across all media, the recall will be higher on television. This is not just due to the lesser clutter but also the higher view time. Trusted Medium People trust messaging from TV more. According to a Nielsen study , TV trust stands at 68%, ranked below word of mouth (85%), print (71%), and online customer reviews (70 %). Digital ads fared at about 48% to 53%. This goes to show that TV will have a better shot at influencing your brand’s purchase decision and trust. Print can also build trust, but it has far lesser reach and time spent, apart from being quite expensive. Cost Effective Medium When you compare the cost to reach a 1000 people, while minimum outlay on television for an effective campaign is large, the cost per reach is cheaper than other mediums for comparable duration of ad viewership. Although one does not know if the ad playing on TV has been fully watched, it is estimated that only 9% of digital ads are seen for more than a second. The average time spent on a full-page print ad is about 2.8 seconds. Television is thus a more cost effective medium. Helps Brand Metrics Last but not the least, television is a medium that works! In my 15 years of experience, I have seen most of the brand and business metrics move with TV spends more linearly as compared to other media. For me personally, the jury is still out on whether the same can be said for any other medium despite having experimented quite a bit now in the two startups I have been a part of. In conclusion Television is and will remain relevant to marketeers for quite some time to come; the numbers are stacked in its favor after all. Even completely digital businesses like Amazon and Flipkart still use television to drive adoption. Television: The marketeer’s darling for brand building and business growth

While most of India is still getting used to the HD phenomenon, the world has been hit by the 4K television saga, also known as the Ultra HD TV. Now, with the likes of <keyword id="6358540" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sony">Sony</keyword>, <keyword id="6356116" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="LG">LG</keyword> and <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> stepping up the action, these flat panels are making their way to India as well. But the question remains – is it a good choice to invest in one? 
 
But first, what is an Ultra HD TV? 
A basic full HD TV has a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 (1080p) and supports 16:9 aspect ratio. This is now supported by most flat panel frames, ranging from 32 to 90 inches. An Ultra HD or 4K TV doubles the pixel amount on the same screen size, but follows the same aspect ratio. The resolution supported by an Ultra HD set is 3,840 x 2,160 (2160p). Similar to a higher pixel photograph that displays more details, a 4K TV will portray better graphics and moving pictures than an HDTV. In addition, the colour density and vividness also get a boost. 
 
What’s the difference between an Ultra HDTV and an HDTV? Both TV sets target general users. Apart from the resolution, there is not much difference between the two. Both support HDMI and composite input. Like the HDTV, an <keyword id="1861831" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ultra-HD-Television">Ultra HD television</keyword> also supports 5.1 channel surround sound audio and virtual surround sound. However, there are talks that these new-age TV sets will support 7.1 audio channels. 
 
So, should one buy an Ultra HDTV in India? 
India is just warming up to the concept of high definition viewing and surround sound units. The HD content is starting to flow freely now, but still is not at its optimum. HD movies are available, but there are just 25-30 HD TV channels available from various DTH (direct-to-home) vendors. But at this point, Ultra HD content is not available in any form to the Indian consumer. Yes, movies that will support 4K resolution will soon be available in India, which can be downloaded using the TV itself. They might come to the nearby movie stores as well, but no timeline has been given for that yet. Also, to run 4K movies on these TV sets, users will have to buy Ultra HD movie players as well. 
But the biggest hindrance to buying an Ultra HD TV is its price. The cheapest 4K-ready flat screen from leading manufacturers like Sony will set you back by Rs 3 lakh for a 55 inch TV. This is a huge amount to pay for a TV set that does not have the 4K content available in any form. So our suggestion is to wait for the prices to dip south and let the 4K content come to our shores. Then pick one up.

The season three premiere was downloaded by a record-breaking 5.2 million people, showing a 25 percent increase compared to last year.

BARC: Week 43 of 2020 records highest television ad volumes since 2015

P&amp;G and regional supermarket Kroger <a href="http://espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs/2013/story/_/id/10236672/2013-nfl-playoffs-indianapolis-colts-get-sellout-cincinnati-bengals-green-bay-packers-wait">purchased "thousands" of tickets</a> for Bengals fans in Cincinnati. And a team of the Packers' corporate sponsors led by Associated Bank <a href="https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/419165171324440576">saved Green Bay from potential chaos</a>.
In each case, the sponsor-bought tickets will be available for free to military veterans and their families.
Such a decision from a sponsor builds the brand's image and is certainly a nice gesture to those who serve our country, but it also allows their commercials to be seen on thousands on <keyword id="6357922" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Television">television</keyword> screens during the game's broadcast.
It is not uncommon for sponsors to buy remaining tickets to prevent a blackout, but for it to happen on such a large scale (21,000 tickets!) is embarrassing for the NFL and will require its attention.
No one seems to argue that the decline in ticket sales is related to a decline in fan support.
Rather, the NFL argues that it is due to an improved home viewing experience, with the popularity of HD broadcasts.
ESPN's <a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/111127/inside-slant-closer-look-at-playoff-tickets">Kevin Seifert</a> thinks that is likely a big reason, but not the only one the NFL should be focusing on:
"It should also understand, however, that ticket prices, outdoor weather, harsh ticket policies, and, yes, drunken fans are also contributing factors..."

If you have an Internet connection, you can probably ditch your pricey cable television subscription without noticing even a hiccup in your viewing habits. You'll still be able to watch all the shows you love, and will even find some new favorites.
By combining a number of streaming services, you can enjoy almost all the same programming you get out of a cable subscription while saving money in the process.
<h3>Netflix - $7.99 per month</h3>

<a href="http://www.netflix.com/">Netflix</a> is a gilded repository of filmed entertainment. It's probably the most ubiquitous streaming service out there, best known as a source for movies while also offering full seasons of television and its own original content (House of Cards, anyone?).
We love Netflix for its two distinct type of "new releases" - the stuff that's fresh from the movie theaters, and the older-but-still-great stuff that Netflix acquires the rights to and makes available to its customers.
<h3>Hulu+ - $7.99 per month</h3>

<a href="http://www.hulu.com/plus">Use Hulu+</a> for watching your TV shows a day or two after they've aired. It covers plenty of cable and broadcast channels' content, from The Good Wife to The Daily Show to Saturday Night Live (all the way back to season one!).
There are minimal ads, but we consider that a reasonable trade for such quick turnaround time in streaming new shows.
<h3>Aereo - $8 per month</h3>

Aereo takes your area's over-the-air television signals and puts the, online. Because it's online, Aereo has some handy DVR-like features built into its service, letting you pause live TV and record shows for later.
Aereo is the only streaming service able to effectively offer live sporting events since it's capturing a signal that's already going out over the airwaves in realtime.

You might consider this Amazon's response to Netflix. I've always thought of Amazon's Instant Video streaming service something of a nice-to-have rather than an essential outlet for streaming media junkies. You can generally find its offerings elsewhere, but don't be fooled - there are still some great gems tucked away.

Tata Sky celebrates World Television Day with Yashraj Mukhate

<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image"></div><keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword></div>It's been nearly a fortnight since all 13 episodes of Netflix's original series "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/watch-netflixs-house-of-cards-free-right-now-2013-2">House of Cards</a>" premiered online. 
And while media has openly discussed and <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/2013/feb/01/review-house-of-cards-episode-one-netflix" target="_blank">reviewed the pilot</a> and opening episodes, we haven't heard much about the later episodes yet, even though some have already finished the series. 
Certainly, the first episode is open for discussion right after the premiere, but Netflix has in itself caused a slight conundrum in the television-consumption universe. How do you talk about a show when you're not sure how much of it anyone has viewed? 
Is episode 11 taboo to discuss after day one of the series rollout? (Unless you're sick or staying at home with a case of the Netflix binge, we think so.) But, how about after day three or four? How about a week? 
Looking ahead, when will it be okay for media to discuss the season one finale openly? (<a href="http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/02/09/david-finchers-house-of-cards-finale-and-spoiler-sound-off" target="_blank">IGN</a> has already dissected the entire series.) 
Not only has the political drama flipped the <keyword id="6355065" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="tv">TV</keyword> model on its head by releasing episodes in bulk, but at the same time it has limited the number of discussions that would normally come from outlets about a 13-episode <keyword id="6357922" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Television">television</keyword> show's continuous plot. 
During AllThingsD's <a href="http://allthingsd.com/video/" target="_blank">D: Dive Into Media conference</a> discussion with Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos yesterday, this very issue was became a topic of discussion.
It was suggested the 13-episode rollout not only prevents people from discussing singular episodes after consumption, but also speculation about what may come next in the storyline. 
However, Sarandos says the problem isn't that people aren't talking about the drama. Rather, he claims people are discussing the show constantly and that conversation's growing every day. 
"We're not trying to dismantle or destroy television," says Sarandos. "We're trying to evolve television in a way that consumers really want."

Instead, Sarandos suggests "House of Cards" is starting a new style of Watercooler conversation with different rules. 
"The rules are on spoiler alert. The thing you talk about, some of it is what episode are you on," says Sarandos. "If I'm on eight and you're on four. You and I talk about four, but I know not to talk about five." 
There's only one problem with this logic. 
The ability to recall what occurs on one single episode and then retain that in a catalogued folder to recall at any given moment is asking a lot of a typical viewer. 
If you asked someone right now what happened on season 5 episode 11 of "How I Met Your Mother" we highly doubt you could tell us the episode storyline off the top of your head. (For those wondering, the episode followed <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1559709/">Robin and Marshall smoking their last cigarettes</a>.) 
We asked the Business Insider newsroom what episode they're currently on (if they're watching at all). 
Some have already finished the series, and the majority haven't been vexed or frustrated in the least when trying to discuss the show with others. 
What we found is that people are just waiting for others to catch up to where they are or finish viewing the series before beginning discussions.

<li>"I find that I talk about it and consume it like a movie rather than a TV show." — reporter Tony Manfred </li>
<li>"I finished it in a week. I don't find it hard to talk about because most of my friends are pretty far or have seen the whole thing too. For friends hadn't watched it yet, I just would re watch from the beginning with them." — reporter Kevin Smith</li>
<li>"Finished it. It was kind of annoying having to remember what to not spoil." — Walter Hickey</li>
</ul>
Of course, this doesn't solve the issue for entertainment writers who may not be sure when the right time is to discuss the season finale; however, it does demonstrate that Sarandos has a point — the series is altering the way we discuss a show. 
Ultimately, the way that may be best to treat something like "House of Cards" original series, and its impending rollout of "Arrested Development" come March is as a movie to discuss once before and after users are finished viewing.

There's a new report today that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-still-cant-figure-out-how-to-do-a-good-television-2013-8">Apple is talking to content companies about doing channels as apps on a television set</a>. Or not. It also really wants to work with cable companies. 
We don't know what's going on, but it sure sounds like Apple can't get what it wants. 
And this shouldn't be a surprise. <keyword id="6357934" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Steve-Jobs">Steve Jobs</keyword> laid out why the TV industry is a mess in 2010. Nothing has changed. 
We just ran this quote, but it's worth running again. 
Anytime you read about Apple and TV industry, just remember this from Steve Jobs.
The break through for an Apple TV isn't going to be about hardware or software, it's going to be about making good deals, and figuring out the best, most profitable way to take an Apple TV to the market. 
Clearly Apple hasn't landed on the right formula just yet. 
Here's Jobs:
"The problem with innovation in the television industry is the go to market strategy.
The television industry fundamentally has a subsidized business model that gives everybody a set top box for free, or for $10 a month. And that pretty much squashes innovation because no one is willing to buy a set top box. Ask <a href="http://tivo.com/" target="_blank" title="" class="skimwords-link" data-skimwords-id="874570" data-skimwords-word="tivo" data-group-id="0" data-skim-creative="300001" data-skim-product="874570">TiVo</a>. Ask Replay TV. Ask Roku, ask Vudu, ask us, ask Google in a few months. Sony's tried, Panasonic's tried, we've all tried. So, all you can do is add a box onto the TV system.
You can say … I'll add another little box with another one. You end up with a table full of remotes, cluster full of boxes, bunch of UIs. The only way that's ever gonna change is if you really go back to square one and you tear up the set top box and design it with a consistent UI and deliver it to the customer in a way they're willing to pay for it. Right now there's no way to do that. So that's the problem with the TV market.
We decided, do we want a better TV or a better phone? The phone won out because there was no way to get it to market. What do we want more? A better tablet or a better TV? Well, probably a better tablet. but it doesn't matter because there's no way to get a TV to market. The TV is going to lose until there is a viable go-to-market strategy, otherwise you're just making another TiVo.
That make sense?
It's not a problem of technology, it's not a problem of vision, it's a fundamental go-to-market problem.
There isn't a cable operator that's national, there's a bunch of operators. And it's not like there's GSM, where you build a phone and it works in all these other countries. No every single country has different standards. It's very 'tower of babble-ish', not that's not the right word. Balkanized. I'm sure smarter people than us will figure this out. But when we say Apple TV is a hobby, that's why we use that phrase."
